"Are you guys saying that those Honda/TOYOta mini vans can do that?"

Yes. The (not so) mini-vans are quite tall inside, and have a low loading
height. For trips, we used to rent Dodge Caravans & take out the 3rd row
seat. 4 bikes (front wheels removed) and four riders fit comfortably. I
tried this a couple of years ago with the Dodge product & it seems to have
shrunk a bit.

Just recalled we hauled our tandem in our '99 Honda Odyssey. 3rd seat
folded into the floor, and the second row seats spaced apart. The tandem
fit in between the 2nd row seats but I can't recall if the front wheel
stayed on or not. Inclined to think so because it was so easy to do.
Those vans can haul a LOT of stuff.

Gorgeous pics as always. Sad to see winter returning. I rode alot this summer
and enjoyed it greatly. No matter the blistering heat and soaking humidity I
rode amap to not waste a day cuz I knew I better ride while I can.

Now hernia surgery looms at end of October and I am not looking forward to
another winter. Every year I tell myself I will ride through it, but by March
the winter gloom gets me so down that my riding all but grinds to a halt until
my mind blooms again when temps rise above 60F.

But I am thankful I live in Maryland only and not North Dakota or something!

Not disputing the buying power that international trade often affords us,
but Busch & Muller products are made in Germany, so they're not really
impacted by the tariffs referenced in the segment above.

While I have no doubt that at least some of the components that go into
their lights are produced in China, there's something of a courtship
happening in EU and Beijing trade relations right now, so B only stands
to benefit from the current goings on.

(By the by, pretty please don't construe this post as intentionally
divisive or incendiary, an idle defense of MUSA, or use it as a step stool
for political OT, this is simply my read on What's Going On Right Now.)

[RBW] Re: Recomendations For Cycling-Specific Vehicle

2018-09-25 Thread dougP
If you're willing to shop used, take a look at the Toyota Matrix. I think
it's been out of production for a while, not sure how long. It's basically
a tall Corolla station wagon. I had a manual & got 35 MPG on the road. We
figured out a way to get both our bikes in (my 58 cm touring bike & her 47
cm same) using furniture pads to separate them. Did require front wheel
removal. As a bonus, the Matrix has a clever passenger's seat that gets
out of the so I could carry a 9'6" surfboard inside with the hatch closed.

We currently have a Honda CRV & with some planning we can both bikes in the
back, upright, with room for luggage. For a single bike, pretty much any
hatchback will work. I carried a bike the back of my 240Z but it require
removing both wheels, and the bike had no racks, fenders, or other
accessories. The car had no back seat.

[RBW] Re: New "Hill" Bike is Posted

2018-09-25 Thread CMR
I think the Blunt SS is a better comparison, it's a similar width ~25mm
internal and weighs something ridiculous like 395 grams. A big issue is
wide rim + braking surface means a heavy enough aluminum to not dent and
affect braking. Dents in disc rims are not a gigantic issue usually, and
these lightweight aluminum rims do dent. That said I think the Alex rims
are definitely heavy, but the Riv crew lean toward to the heavy duty side
for rims, which has its pros and cons.

[RBW] Recomendations For Cycling-Specific Vehicle

2018-09-25 Thread Joe Bernard
Pretty much any SUV, CUV, van or wagon will do. I didn't even go that far, I
have a 2017 Chevy Impala (the current huge model) with a big trunk, and
pass-through with the back seats folded forward. It's not convenient enough to
pop a full-size bike in and out in a hurry every day - I have a Brompton and
Bike Friday for that - but it's enough for the occasional transport to a nice
riding spot. Plus nobody is buying cars right now, so GM is practically giving
the things away. Fast with the V6, reliable, cheap. I love it.

Exactly my need.  I bought a 2017 VW Golf Alltrack.   The front wheel

I bought my Honda Element for precisely this reason. Bikes roll into the back
with the wheels on. No disassembly at all. Carries a bunch of stuff, durable
and very dependable.

Unfortunately, Honda stopped making them a few years ago. But … they made a lot
of them, so you should be able to find one used. They all look pretty much the
same; the later models had some minor exterior changes that included a switch
to having the entire vehicle painted in the same color.

I’m planning to hold onto mine until gas goes out of style.

The Velocity Blunt is regarded as the light wide 27.5" disc rim, and it
weighs 570g and costs $100 per hoop
The DM24 is a hefty 725g for a 622mm size. Scaled down to 584, that would
be around 680g. Riv sells those hoops for $50 each (I emailed Rich and
asked).

So for a rim-brake rim that weighs 100g more than a light disc brake rim,
and costs $50 less per hoop. That's in the ball park of reasonable, isn't
it?

[RBW] Re: Roadini - How do you like yours?

2018-09-25 Thread Bill Lindsay
I rode my Leo on a 50 miler this morning. I 'hammered' a standard roadie
time trial section on San Pablo Dam Road. The Strava segments are all
labeled "SPDR" which looks like "speeder". Anyway, I'm used to getting
nowhere near the times of the local elite-level roadies on their $15000
machines. If I'm in the top 20% on flattish segments and in the top 10% on
climbs, I think that's pretty good, given that I turn 50 in a couple
months, and given that my bike typically weighs 25-30 pounds with stuff. I
set 6 PRs this morning along that section, and it's the 28th time I've
passed through there on Strava. #1235 out of 6877 riders. I can live with
that. The Leo goes faster when I pedal harder. Most of the previous 27
times I rode through there I was not riding on Leo. So is Leo the fastest
road bike I've ever ridden? The data suggests it's possible. Did I just
ride harder today? Maybe. I promise I was not at my most fit. I also was a
little bit hungover, but that's another story.

Come to think of it, I frequent a Chicago area cycling blog that features
many horror stories that commuters in the city post about the outright
hostility they encounter while commuting in the city. Many of those who
are the worst offenders (according to the blog posts) are older people who
have and "attitude" against bikes being anywhere on streets. Yet, many of
those same old codgers are dyed-in-the-wool Cub fans and have been for
years. Since this business of Zoborist getting around town has been more
or less featured by the local media, I wonder what some of those same
people think about one of the team's best player getting around town on a
bike. The irony is as thick as the fog on some of these Fall mornings
along the lakeshore

[RBW] Re: Roadini - How do you like yours?

2018-09-25 Thread dan boyle
I have Joe A that I set up with racks, dyno lights, fenders and it is my
commuter bike. Loved it from day one. I ride it 5 or 6 days a week. I had
a Trek Domane 2.0 that I used for weekend speedy rides. It felt a little
small, and compared to my Joe A it was obviously not nearly as comfortable,
but it was light and fast and I liked that part. I was deciding between a
road-build Sam or a Roadini.

Will told me the Sam was pretty close to my Joe A, and might not be
"different" enough to feel like a different ride. He was right. My
Roadini arrived several weeks ago. It is exactly what I wanted it to be, no
extra stuff bolted on, just their recommended wheels and brifters with a
3x10 setup Light, comfortable and fast. My Trek and Joe are 58's, My
Roadini is a 61. I ride it every chance I get. I would get it again in a
second...it is perfect. The Trek is up for sale, never to be ridden
again. The Roadini is just too smooth, comfortable and fast (enough for
me).

I get a variety of different responses depending on which bike I am riding;
most non-cyclists just smile at me on my very non-traditional bikes.
When I encounter other cyclists on "nice" bikes it generally breaks down in one
of two camps the people who give you a heads up "on the left" or whatever tend
to also recognize what it is I am riding & will follow with "nice bike" or "is
that a Rivendell?" The other batch are the lycra wearing, carbon fiber riding,
workout enthusiasts who are trying to break their KoM. They rarely say
anything, buzz by as fast as they can and only recognize or acknowledge other
bikes similar to theirs. It really doesn't matter that many times my bike cost
twice as much as theirs, it's just sort of a myopic view of the bike world &
bikes as exercise equipment/ with social cachet.

would grow, thus the demand for cycling infrastructure would grow (it already
is in a number of places, so some seem on a tipping point. Salida, CO is one
example). You are spot on, we have a wondrous assortment of practical bikes in
the niche markets and what a blessing that is!

With abandon,
Patrick

Re: [RBW] Re: Film photography - subject matter?

2018-09-25 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
Got some new photos back from the lab today. Here’s a cycling-related example:

I could have easily gotten the same basic shot with a digital camera (or my
iPhone, even), but taking it with an old manual film camera makes it more fun.

[RBW] Re: Lights and Tariffs

2018-09-25 Thread Jock Dewey
Another casualty among so so many these past 18 months. I have good
industry pals who worked very hard to make that company what it is. Or
maybe now, was.

We are the walking / cycling wounded. A good long hard fast ride helps
control the angst, however.

So that is what we do.

Re: [RBW] Re:

@ my local shop these types of riders are their bread & butter! They account
for at least 5 flat fixes a day, brake pads, seats . . . . Basically, all the
stuff that rarely wears out on my bikes, because I have too many.
The article doesn't say the "Industry" needs this type of rider it says "we"
need this type of rider. Like the subject in this article, most of the people I
encounter riding bikes for transportation CAN'T get a driver's license; for
that reason I admire their independent spirit, because they could just as
easily, be calling the local metro to have a short bus come pick them up &
drive them around. Instead they take control of their situation. Respect!

Re: [RBW] Re: Blahg Post Ethiopian Shoes

2018-09-25 Thread Ash
Later I sent another email pressing for an ETA. I got a quick/reasonable
reply. It said they will ship this week.

If it takes another 8 weeks I'll still hold off talking to the credit card
bank, as long as I have communication from SR. The reason I placed this
order in the first place was to support something good like this taking
place in the African continent. Having run a small business for a short
time in past life, I can relate to the struggle they might be going
through. Having initial success is hard. Scaling the business is a lot
harder. Intention vs ability.. if it is the later, I have tremendous
patience. If I ever smell the other, as John Dryden said "Beware the fury
of a patient man"!

All said and done, if the shoe turns out to be of decent quality, I'll
certain to keep SoleRebels in my (very short) list of shoe brand for future
needs. What I want to order for my wife in already in the shopping cart at
SR. It is a rather nice one!

Do you have the QB set up with a fixed or freewheel cog?

I take it that those tires are 32s?

Around my house, the sand pretty much makes a fixed off road bike
impractical, though I do ride my fixed, 559 X ~28 Riv Roads on some of the
firmer parts. But 50 mm seems a minimum, and 60 is better.

Yes, I had a lot of fun playing with that image (the one in color) taken

couldn't hurt).

What I'm looking for is inspiration as I build myself a rule-set
for a film photography project. On my morning commutes, I've been
keeping my eye out for "what would I shoot if I were shooting
film" moments.

1. What do you film photographers shoot when you shoot film? Do
you approach it differently than phone camera or digital shooting?
2. Do you cycle to shoot, or is it a wholly unrelated hobby?
3. Anybody shoot color? I want to do this now, since a friend
develops color at home using a sous vide (cooking) setup to
control temps.

Please link to your images, if you care to share. I'd really like
to see what the film folk are doing.

Re: [RBW] Re:

Honestly, how many people live within 3 blocks of a grocery store? How
many even live within 3 miles of a grocery store?  When you get to the
grocery store, is there a place you can secure your bike while you
shop?  And how much of a week's shopping can you realistically carry on
a bicycle?

These are not academic questions for me.  Back in 2009, I got this
Kogswell P/R which I set up as a porteur.  At the time, there was a
small supermarket a half mile from where I live.  There was also a drug
store in the mall.  I found I could successfully carry two shopping bags
of groceries on the porteur rack, as long as they weren't all cans or
Gatorade bottles.   The supermarket had a solid structure you could lock
to, although the "bike rack" at the drug store is about as poor a rack
as you can find - room only for 2 bikes, no way to secure anything but
the front wheel, etc.  I could take neighborhood streets to get there,
no crossing main thoroughfares, and the store was small enough you could
do a pick-up shop quickly.

And then the supermarket closed, and moved a couple of miles north on Rt
1.  The new store has no place to park a bike, and it's huge. It'll take
you several minutes just to walk around the perimeter, and a pick-up
shop is not worth contemplating: it simply takes too long, even if
you're driving.  It feels like it's only worthwhile making the trip if
you're doing a week's worth of shopping.  For me, that's at least six
shopping bags, most likely 100 pounds, and it's at minimum an hour's
trip to and fro and time in the store.  None of that is practical by bike.

I'm seriously considering selling the bike.

[RBW] Re:

2018-09-25 Thread Tom Wyland
I used to contribute to the blog Bikes For the Rest of Us
because there just were not many
"practical" bikes out there back then. I got involved because I was doing
my own search for a bike that would take wide tires, fenders, racks and
lights. Now it seems like bikes like these are everywhere, and that's a
good thing.

What we are lacking is people feeling the need to bike 3 blocks to the
grocery store instead of driving. Or it's focusing on the instagram
instead of the journey. Or biking as a sport instead of something you do
with friends and family.

This type of "everyday" biking in the US would be helped immensely by
investment in biking infrastructure. $5 per gallon gas would not hurt
either. There is a perception that biking is for the fringe or a toy for
the wealthy and spending on infrastructure is treated accordingly.

If everyone knew how *fun* it is to ride one of these practical bikes,
everyone would be doing it!

[RBW] Re:

2018-09-25 Thread ascpgh
What's good for and industry dependents who you ask. A healthy business
navigates its ups and downs, I worry that growth phases in bicycling
attracts the corporate pirates who bet short, capitalize stock with sketchy
commercial paper and make their exit before this house of cards falls. The
rewards in their communities is unrelated to the subject matter of their
industry, except that money is good, more is better.

If a corporate maven answers the question, it might depend on the business
school they went to. Sales volume and buzz supporting surges of growth come
up. Ask a modern day Velocio and their answer may involve growth of numbers
riders who integrate bicycling into their lives and pursue the extent of
its contributions. Is a local event to reinforce the bicycling and
associated community of like minded or an opportunity to expand market
exposure of promoted products for purchase?

I agree that we are in a nice epoch of cycling. I can find parts for my
current riding equipment needs and anticipate future ones without hoarding
for when things cool down in the industry. What I get from cycling isn't
for sale at the LBS, Rivendell, Compass or PJW. I would say the same thing
about photography if I was deeply into it, newer, better cameras will
always be out there yet I could take wonderful pictures with my little
compact Rollei 35 SE. It was being where I wanted to photograph something
or taking the time to see them. Not too unlike my bike riding.
