hi bill, sunrace makes the 11-50 twelve speed cassette that fits on a
standard 10/11s sram/shimano freehub body. this is what i have. you can
find the mini-group on ebay for just under $300 for the shifter, derailer,
chain, & sunrace cassette package. i try not to buy new bicycle components
from ebay, but i caved for this deal. this is the cheapest i could find it:

In order to run the 10-50 cassette you need the XD driver on the rear hub. Is
that driver available on a 135mm we rear hub? Is it available on a 135mm QR
non-disc rear hub? Or will you be running a Shimano compatible 11-50 eagle

Bottom line is Jim made it clear he doesn't want to do this again two months

[RBW] SE Rivendell 25th Anniversary Celebration May 3/4/5 Greenville SC

2019-02-12 Thread mcburnjow
The main events will be on Saturday but we thought we’d offer a pre- and post
on Friday and Sunday for those who want to make a weekend of it. The ride on
Saturday heads north of Greenville on the popular Swamp Rabbit Trail about 10
miles to the village of Travelers Rest. From TR we access rolling low traffic
roads into northern Greenville County for about a 20 mile loop returning to the
SRT past Paris Mt and through the campus of Furman University.

Here’s a link to some visuals about Greenville SC on the Matador Network, a SF
based adventure travel site.

https://matadornetwork.com/destinations/north-america/united-states/greenville-sc/

The first video highlights some of the high points of the day.

We are glad to offer tips and advice on housing etc for folks coming from a
distance.

[RBW] Re: Swaping one Riv for another

2019-02-12 Thread John Bokman
Thanks Jamison for that.

I am currently thinking thusly:
56, 560B
drop bars (likely Nitto RM 13, Nitto 132 or 135, or my usual Nitto Noodle -
maybe 46 this time from my usual 44).
V-brakes with dedicated V-drop levers from Tektro. (I live where it rains a
lot and like the power of Vs, although I also like Cantis for superior
modulation and feel).
Fenders.
Possibly front platform rack, but certainly transfer my low riders over
from the Sam (Tubus Tara).
Transfer Tubus Logo Evo from Sam to the rear of Atlantis.
Probably 45-50mm tires.
Sugino Wide/Low double.
Of course I'd run a dynamo light front and rear (I commute in the dark).

I've been thinking of getting an Atlantis in 650 B, using it as my

 Crazy?

The Sam, which now holds front and rear Tubus racks, Nitto Front F32,

 racks,
and eventually a lighter wheel set than my current (not shabby) Velocity

Probably roll with Compass tires on it, too (now run the excellent,
 affordable, Vittoria Voyager Hypers).

The only thing I have not loved about my Sam has been that I get toe
overlap at times at slow speed city riding. It's annoying at times. I am
confident with a 650B setup of the 56cm Atlantis, this would be a
 non-issue.

Re: [RBW] Re: Kickstand tire rub

2019-02-12 Thread Patrick Moore
If you torque the mounting bolt so that the plates dig themselves little
hollows in the stays, your stand won't rotate. Just kidding (though I've
done that), but so far, the Greenfield bb-area stand on my Dahon has stayed
put, even without torquing it into the meta, and even with frequent and
irritated kickings -- when the drivetrain is fixed, the left crank always
ends up blocking the stand. I liberally wrap the stays in bar tape, the
torque down enthusiastically.

Slight tangent: does anyone know if a Greenfield left-rear-dropout stand
will interfere with that little magnetic mushroom thing that holds the
for'ard part of the frame to the after part when you fold it? Or can such a
stand be modified without too much trouble to avoid this?

I use the Hon Solo for grocery shopping, which means that I kick the stand
down and and then up at least half a dozen times during a typical singe
trip to the store; a rear dropout stand could be put down and left there
even as you wheel your (fixed gear) bike through the aisles.

[RBW] Re: Kickstand tire rub

2019-02-12 Thread 'Hetchins52' via RBW Owners Bunch
I was at RBWHQ about 2 weeks ago and Roman showed me something that seems
to address this problem. On the MIT Atlantis (IIRC), the kickstand mounting
bolt hole in the frame's chain stay plate has been placed off center, to
the NDS so that the kickstand ends up maybe 5 to 10 mm farther to the left
of centerline.

That implies that Laing's #A-1 filing solution is something to try to
address the rubbing issue. You'd want to find a toothed washer for the top
of the plate so that the kickstand can't be forced to slide back toward the
center.

#A-2 probably won't be as good: kickstands always want to rotate, though I
guess it would be in the direction it can't easily turn any farther.

Re: [RBW] Re: Another Riv Financial Situation Thread

2019-02-12 Thread Patrick Moore
Grant is a worrier, at least to judge by his posts starting way back
pre-internet with "Peeking Through the Knothole." This is not a criticism,
just an observation. I'm a worrier, and I know something of what he feels.

What caught my eye was the report, for the first time IIRC, that staff have
been volunteering for big cutbacks in their working hours; I've not heard
of this before; and this report did get me worried. I very much agree that
"we will have lost something really special if we lose Rivendell."

And I expect -- can't say from inside knowledge, but I suspect -- that a
good part of Riv's financial pressures come from 2 things I wholeheartedly
support: (1) they make and sell what they love, even if they don't make and
sell what I, personallly, want; and (2) they pay their staff honestly. Very
many of the "Great and Good" among our commercial and political leaders
will eventually find themselves in lower bolgias of hell for, basically,
pimping themselves to whatever clientele they wish to profit from to the
neglect of honesty and integrity.

Others said, "Just buy, don't complain" or words to that effect. Sure, but
how many cables will it take to materially boost the company's bottom line?
I for one just don't buy much of what Rivendell offers; they don't even
carry the tubes I need, and after so many years of cycling I have stocked
up on a great deal of the bits that I need -- this is just a matter of
time. I don't want Rivendell clothing, Ortlieb panniers and Super C Slim
and Junior and Nelson saddlebags work for me where Sackvilles won't (I've
owned at least 7 Rivendell-marque saddlebags over the years), and they
don't sell fixed cogs or Dingles or ENO hubs; and I bought my dynamo hubs
and headlights before this announcement. Even cables: 3 of my bikes are
fixed gears, and 2 of these have just one brake. I did order $100 of stuff
recently including a $25 certificate, over and above the earlier $25
certificate that I haven't redeemed.

I am seriously thinking that I might, just might -- long shot -- begin to
start thinking about considering a plan for an eventual 4th custom; not
sure they'd welcome the inquiry, but who knows -- $3500 versus say $1500,
but I know I'd get better overall quality, if they could bear to accept my
requirements. This would be a copy (**copy**) of my '99 and '03 customs,
but with the changes needed to accommodate a 114 mm OL Sturmey Archer AM
hub. As I said, just thinking out loud, but I've said it.

To get to the point: I *absolutely do not think that this discussion need
be a bad thing* **if** discutants take the small trouble to think before
they post. What dismays and wearies me, on this and other lists, but even
more so in general, is the readiness of people to take ideological offense
where none need be taken. To put it vulgarly -- and I am talking generally;
this list is a far lesser offender than many other threads I follow (or,
don't follow because of the poor quality of the responses) too many posts
are stupid, and stupid because thoughtless.

Joe, I like you, but I am thinking of you in particular.

Over and out.

[RBW] WTR (ride): SF Bay Area 64cm Atlantis + 64cm Quickbeam + 58cm Appaloosa

2019-02-12 Thread Jay P

Infrequent poster, occasional buyer, often reader

I've been watching this list for some time for one of these to come up on
this list but... it would be great to be able to try one before buying one
especially as buying/shipping/selling bikes is such a pain.

If you have one of these and would welcome me stopping by for a quick test
ride, please PM me !

Berkeley/ Oakland ideal but not essential.

I would really appreciate it, and it's also would be fun to shoot the bike
breeze for a minute.

I could also bring you a gift-beer-of-appreciation and, if you'd like, ride
over one of my bikes in case you're were curious about trying one (they're
all a delight):

   - 64cm Trek 720 (1982) Bosco cruiser with 37mm almotion TL tires, full
531, 47cm chain stays, laid back cruiser
   - 64cm Trek 710 (1982) 46cm noodle with 35mm g-one speed tires, full
   531, lithe fun sport tourer
   - 64cm Fuji America (~1981) 46mm noodle with 650x 40mm marathon supremes
-- first 650b conversion, and one I reach for often
   - 60cm Betty Foy (early), HT albatross, 40mm marathon supremes currently
with a Copenhagen wheel -- wonderful but a touch small -- likely to sell to
buy Atlantis, QB, Appa, or new Cheviot
   - 56cm Novara XR -- HT albatross (but designed for dirt drop/ drop bars)
with 2.1 TL almotions, sleeper, very low bb stouter version of XO1, really
nice bike -- too small for me but too cool ! Will sell soon...

And if you have one of these frames/bikes that you want to sell, please be
in touch! (condition less important than price : )

Thank you - ! Jay (Berkeley)

[RBW] A quick note

2019-02-12 Thread AV
The thread about Riv's financial situation closed, so I couldn't post my
reply to recent comments on my post. I think maybe some people
misunderstood what I was trying to say, so I hope it's OK if I post my
reply here.

I get that Rivendell is about drawing a line in the sand over certain
things and I agree with most of those lines. To me, though, the most
important things about Rivendell are the functional advantages of the bikes
and the ethics of the company. My point was: If Rivendell is in trouble
financially, why not consider doing something different with the product
line up? Is that really a worse idea than hoping an angel investor shows
up? I'm not saying get rid of bikes like the AHH and Atlantis. I'm saying
that maybe Roadini sales were disappointing because a bike like that falls
into a weird middle place in the market and if you're going to offer a
lower priced product tier, maybe try a different approach.

Anyway. I get the impression some people think I was beating a dead horse
and maybe they're right. Sorry for bumping that thread when it seems people
just wanted it to go away.

Re: [RBW] Help me build a Clem please!

2019-02-12 Thread OwenS
Yeah they don't seem to sell the build kits any more. In terms of shipping,
turns out shipping a frame is only $10 cheaper than sending the full bike.
I did however think I would be able to source components and build up my
own one cheaper than a complete bike. However this doesn't seem to be the
case..

Thanks! I can't find 650b rim brake compatible wheels in Australia. I'm

Re: [RBW] Help me build a Clem please!

2019-02-12 Thread OwenS
Thanks Patrick! Yes it certainly is a puzzle. Moreso where to find the
pieces one I've selected them! The main thing I'm really struggling with is
the 650b wheelset.
It is hard because I could go and get a Soma/Surly/Salsa frame for the same
price, with much easier access to wheels (disc brake only) but then that
kinda goes against the point of what I'm after which is the decisions that
have gone into the geometry choices with Riv bikes. It's a pickle!

It'll be the same as the Sugino XD-2 triple, which is 165 mm. Rivendell

It's the same crankarm as the Sugino XD-2 set up as a triple. Just
different rings and a pants guard outer.

[RBW] FS-Riv Road Custom frame/fork 54cm

2019-02-12 Thread Jim Ammirato
Selling my Rivendell Road Custom frameset. It was built in April, 2000 by
Roland Della Santa. Pea/Sage green Imron paint by JB.

Frame specs are -

ST - 54cm c-c (56 c-t)

TT - 54cm c-c

Rear spacing - 130mm

Pics here - https://www.flickr.com/photos/velolab

It uses short reach brakes. I am currently running a 700x32 Pacela and
there's still a bit of room under the bridge and crown. I've never tried
running a 35mm but it looks like they might fit (?). I've ridden it with
28mm Paselas with fenders. It has single eyelets front and rear and a pump
peg.

It is in very good condition. There are a few paint chips/nicks especially
on the eyelets that can be easily touched up. There is a small ding on the
top tube. This happened when the bike fell over and just nicked my portable
stand. You can see it in the pics. It's not reallly noticeable from three
feet away. The paint didn't chip or crack, it's more of a scuff. Feel free
to ask questions.

Asking $1250. shipped to CONUS. Please contact me off list if interested.
Thanks !

[RBW] Re: Help me build a Clem please!

2019-02-12 Thread Weston Hein
Just a couple of things that I noticed while building up my Clem:

A clutch rear derailleur really helps with the chain slap if you plan on
doing any mixed surface riding. The extra long chainstays give more room
for the chain to sag and bounce around. The chain slap may not bother you
but I found a Sram GX 2x10 rear really helped quiet things down back there
over rough riding.

I use a larger gear range than my other bikes. I tried to initially build
the Clem up as a 1x (with a 42t cassette) but just couldn't get the range I
needed. Riv specs the bikes with a 38/24 up front and it works beautifully.
I was able to piece together a budget 38/24 using an old Deore triple and
only had to purchase the new 38t middle ring. Many of these old triples use
a 24t granny already and most haven't been worn beyond use. Shifting has
been great so far with a 10 speed chain using GX trigger shifters and a
CX-70 front der.

V brakes are cheap, easy to set up, and powerful enough to get the job
done. I really dig the aesthetics/modulation of canti's but V brakes are
just easier to work with and provide better overall stopping power in my
experience. When I set my Clem up with canti's I had some shudder in the
front using a headset mounted cable hanger. If I was going to go the canti
route I'd run a fork crown mounted hanger to hopefully alleviate the issue.
I'm also on a 59cm frame so it's a pretty big headtube which may be more of
a problem over a 52cm.

I lve Bosco Bars. Comfort was the name of the game for my build and I
couldn't be happier with the bars. There's more useable hand positions on
them than I imagined. With the long top tube on these frames I found the
swept back bars to really be in a good spot with a 10cm stem. I went with a
Nitto Technomic and find that I use pretty much all of the height available
on the extension. I'm super upright on my bike and with bars angled down
quite a bit my wrists and back are much happier than my more aggressive
bikes. If you were planning to go with these bars it probably wouldn't add
much to your shipping costs from Riv if they can fit them into the frame
box.

My 59cm can fit 2.4" tires fenderless with ease, so you should have no
issues finding a solid gravel/bikepacking tire. 700x55 for commuting with
plenty of room for fenders. Enjoy your Clem and post up some pics when you
get the build done! It's my favorite bike and extremely versatile, I think
it's a great choice for what you're after.

[RBW] Re: 55cm Joe Appa owners, what's your pbh?

2019-02-12 Thread Kalmia Vt
My pbh is 84.5. I'm on the 55 cm Appaloosa. I'm a 5 feet 8 1/2 inches tall
mesomorph. With 700x45 tires I can straddle the bike comfortably anywhere
on the top tube and I like the fit. And I like the bike. I built mine with
the 8cm dirt drop stem. With the stem as low as it will go that puts the
bar ~ 1 inch higher than the saddle. I contemplate swapping the stem for
something that would let me get an inch lower, but that will wait until
spring comes to northern Vermont and I can put some more miles on the
bike. - K

The bicycle industry has always been cyclical. Rivendells' sales
performance is off the same as the rest of the industry. Unfortunately, a
10% drop in sales can lead to a 30% to 40% drop in profitability. The
reverse is also true...a 10% increase in sales can improve profitability by
the same amount. Hopefully, Rivendell can hang on long enough to ride the

Re: [RBW] Re: Another Riv Financial Situation Thread

2019-02-12 Thread AV
Patrick — thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt. My motivation was
indeed positive. Certainly, I did not mean to imply I know better than anyone
else what Rivendell should do. And maybe my idea was misguided or even stupid.

I just wanted to start a conversation about what Riv could do, proactively,
instead of simply waiting for things to get better. That said, I realize that
the last thing Grant Petersen needs is advice from some random person on the
internet. He’s run the business for 25 years, it’s his vision, who cares what
anyone else thinks.

I feel bad I revived a thread that some people wish had gone away. I didn’t
mean to stir things up or set group members against each other.

Apologies in advance for the indoor lighting (currently 3 inches of
ice/freezing rain outside) but figured I would share some pictures of my
updated AHH. I bought the frame from Riv in 2013 and at the time, brazed on
Paul center pull brakes were not an option.

Fast forward to current day. I took the frame and fork to Hanford Cycles in
Philadelphia for the following mods:

Braze on mounts for Paul Racer Center Pull brakes
Threaded rear fender mounts (brake & chainstay bridge)
Provisions for Internal wiring in the down tube and front fork
Chain hanger

Since the work would require some re-painting I also included a set of
Honjo fenders to have them painted the same color as the frame. They did a
great job matching the existing paint and even gave me the leftovers for
future touch ups.

[RBW] Re: Sugino 40x26 wide low double?

2019-02-12 Thread George Schick
Ditto. I was using a long cage derailleur when I switched to the Sugino
double a couple of years ago and noticed that shifting was slow (this is
with a 5-speed freewheel). I dug up and old Shimano Crane out of my parts
box, installed it, and removed a couple chain links. Now it shifts
lightning quick. I like the gearing, as well. Gives me a top-end in the
low 80's and a low in the low 30's, which is fine for the terrain over
which I ride and sufficient range for my aging carcass.

I was just defining my wide-low double gear setup for my new Fitz All-Road,
and the gearing looks pretty similar.

40/24 x 11-26 11 speed, with 55mm tires.
http://www.gear-calculator.com/?GR=DERS&KB=24,40&RZ=11,12,13,14,15,16,17,19,21,23,26&UF=2295&TF=90&SL=2.6&UN=KMH&DV=gearInches

Dropping to a 22t small ring would mimic your low range of gears almost
exactly. I'm looking forward to riding this gearing. I think I'll have a
little more resolution in the 70s, and an extra 105" gear at the top end.

Re: [RBW] Wide range 3-speed QB refurbished

2019-02-12 Thread Ron Mc
ps - found this on VO blog

First, Pro-5-Vis cranks have about the narrowest Q factor, or tread, of any
crank made. That's a good thing for most of us. In fact some experts claim
that most riders pedal more efficiently on low Q-factor cranks. But there
is a small percentage of riders who are more comfortable on with a wider
crank. You probably know who you are and you should not buy Pro-5-Vis
cranks. Simply using a longer bottom bracket, as the article suggests, will
throw off your chain line and, in my experience, may result in balky
shifting.

The other bit I wanted to correct is that all these cranks did not go to
Japan, nor were they re-imported from Japan. You can just look in our stock
room to see that.

Which brings us to the bigger issue of, "Will they be made again?" We were
told, twice, that the last production run would be it. Forever; period; no
more; finished. But apparently this past run sold so quickly that that
decision was reconsidered, according to both Jan and my French contacts,
and there may indeed be more runs. I'm happy about that since they really
are great cranks. But I feel like I misled our customers by repeating what
I'd been told about there being no more ever made. My apologies.

Here is what I wrote previously about these cranks:

One

reason why so many people like the TA crank is that it has about the lowest
Q-factor (width) of any crank ever made. This is because the crank arm is
straight and very close to the outer chainring. So front derailleurs that
have thick outer plates sometimes hit the crankarm, But all Campy models
and many others work. These cranks will work with modern drivetrains, even
10-speed. Another reason to use TA Pro Vis 5 cranks is that they can
replace a triple crank when set up as a double. You can run 28t and 46t
rings with a 12-27 cassette (for example) and have almost the same range as
a triple, but with a lot less overlap. Rings 26 to 68 teeth
are available. By the way, TA
sells the cranks and rings separately; there are no stock combinations. So
why did these wonderful cranks go out of production? The big chainrings,
above 50t or so, are too flexible for racing. And they are very expensive.

Re: [RBW] Quickbeam angled dropouts - first principles?

2019-02-12 Thread Philip Williamson
It was a fun rabbit hole to go down, and John made it easy to explore the
options.

John: "I added all the components to the drawing, and it doesn't look that
weird."
Me: "It looks pretty weird. Can we change it back?"
John: "Sure." Click. Tap tap. "Done."
BikeCad sure is cool.

The slider doesn't have enough range to make the angle worthwhile, and any
dingle setup I run will have the same total number of teeth, anyway.

[RBW] Re: Swaping one Riv for another

2019-02-12 Thread jamison brosseau
Hi John, I would not try to conclude too much about the top tube length
of the Atlantis. While the 59cm has a top tube of 62cm, it also has the
ability to place the handlebars in a much higher postion. If chosen that
higher position will negate some of the top tube length. If you have any
question about the fit I would call Riv. I find these top tube issues are
never as simple as they seem.

Evan, that’s a stunning Ram. Perfectly classic. Beautiful colors too!

Maybe Riv should create a 25th anniversary Ram? Wishful thinking on my part:-)

[RBW] Re: Kickstand tire rub

2019-02-12 Thread lconley
A. You can use a file:
   1. oval the hole in the kickstand plate to move the kickstand out, away
from the tire, or, if you don't want to file on the frame.
   2. file on the sides of the kickstand mount to rotate the kickstand
relative to the frame.
B. Get a kickstand that mounts to the chainstay and seatstay near the rear
hub. Greenfield makes them, and maybe Pletscher also. I mounted one of this
style on a fatbike.

Re: [RBW] Wide range 3-speed QB refurbished

2019-02-12 Thread Ron Mc
The accolade of Crisp Front Shifting was given on another thread, and I
didn't want to seem to take exception with that accolade where it was
given.
I'm posting my comments on this thread in case anybody wants to reference
it for following up on their own version of James' 3-speed.
No front ring setup shifts quicker and crisper than a TA cyclotouriste ring
stack. It's because the side-to-side spacing on the rings is so small.
The narrow ring spacing would be a limitation with a mountain cassette, but
with the single rear cog, it would be the very slickest way to copy James.
I'm running two bikes with Sun XCD crank arms and TA ring stack triples.
Best buy on the crank arms were from Japan suppliers, and best buys (and
widest choice) on the TA rings were from UK and EU suppliers.

This shifts with your favorite road double FD, here Shimano 600, also
running SunTour FD1300 Cyclone on the other drivetrain.

Each of these drivetrains began with a venerable used TA Pro V crank arm
set, and eventually got upgraded to the SunXCD. Most of us have forgotten
what low-Q really means until we have to deal with those crank arms. The
Sun XCD version is an upgrade over the original, because where they give up
Q is a slight outward flare on the arms, making them a much better match
with modern wider rear spacings and chainstays, and also giving easy
clearance for setting up the FD cage.

The big set-up thing with these is BB width and asymmetry. The 3x7 just
above is running 121mm SKF with 4mm offset spacer. My other 3x5 is on a
125mm Phil BB with factory 5mm offset, and 2 more mm dialed in the BB cup.

Beautiful bike. The solid rear dropout differs from the later Rams which have
a window and the lug set is pointed instead of rounded as on later bikes. Ooh

[RBW] Re: Want to test ride: 52cm Clem L in NYC Area

2019-02-12 Thread jamison brosseau
Hi Bob, 718 does have a 52cm Clem h set up and available for test rides.
Pretty sure the geometry between the L an H is basically the same. I think the
H would let you know if the bike will fit.

[RBW] Kickstand tire rub

2019-02-12 Thread WETH
Hi Bob,
I had a similar issue with my 56cm Hunq and 650bx2.4 tires. I called Riv and
spoke to Roman. He recommended a kickstand they used on Clems, if I remember
correctly. After searching for a few minutes he found one for me.
A pictures worth a 1,000 words: https://flic.kr/p/2a71pS1
So, I’d call Riv if you haven’t.
Best wishes,
Erl
