[RBW] Re: My Electric Sam

2020-10-02 Thread Chris L
I spend a lot of time on a non-bike forum where everything under the sun is
discussed, and e-bikes come up fairly often. The consensus of e-bike
riders there is that they work just as hard while riding their e-bikes,
they just end up going faster!

Re: [RBW] Re: My Electric Sam

2020-10-02 Thread Sky Coulter
Thanks Ash. So far i’ve found the electric riv has led to no car use in two
weeks and i have no plans to drive to work ever again, unless conditions are
such that biking is unsafe.

My roundtrip commute is just slightly over 15 miles. But its pretty hilly,
similar to a fish bowl in having steep sections on either side of a flat
middle. My atlantis (thanks to Jamison) offers a much smoother, pleasant
riding experience but it does take more time and energy. The eSam makes for a
ride that is still enjoyable and leaves me more invigorated than won out when i
get home.

I do think a susi/clem/wolbis would make a better conversion candidate, but i
haven’t figured out a good means of mounting the batter on it yet. So it’ll be
an eSam rather than an eClem for now.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone interested in a Ride in NJ in October?

2020-10-02 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch
Roberta and others:

Tentative schedule for 10/17/20:
* People driving: Be ready to ride in Atlantic Highlands (AH) at the 1st
Ave/Hennessey parking lot at 1130
* Wait for NYC folks coming on the NJ Transit train scheduled in Matawan
at 1011 and riding to AH on the HHT. They should arrive by 1130.
* Ride to Highlands ferry dock to get NYC folks coming on the 1145 ferry.
* Everyone ride out to Sandy Hook.
* Retrace routes back to Highlands and Atlantic Highlands. Train folks go
to Long Branch to catch the train or bike ride back to AH and ride the HHT
back to Matawan for the same or later train

Any Comments or questions?

[RBW] Re: WTB: Sam Hillborne 57/58 cm

2020-10-02 Thread Todd G.
Thank you for the heads up! My only real reason for pause is that I think I
would prefer the cantilever version. Really for no other reason than
affording myself a little more flexibility in tire size. I mentioned in my
original post that I want to run a 38, 42 or up to a 44, maybe a 48c
tire. I’m pretty confident that the 44/48 tire option would be maxing out
any medium reach caliper. I actually meant to include that most of my
interest was in a canti version, but it kind of slipped my mind.

I'm with Brett and others here. I think the keyword on the ACLU link is
discrimination. It would definitely depend on the specific wording in the
law, but I reckon a white person would have to prove they were
discriminated against, which would give the court or judge some leeway to
consider the specific circumstances. I doubt its going to cause them a
problem. Grant talks about that a bit in the blahg post too.

My favorite part of the announcement on the blahg:
"If we go broke because those who use the flag or God as an invisibility
cloak for their white nationalism stop patronizing us, we'll have a "mixed
feelings moment," roll down the roll-up door one final time, and move on."

I'm pretty sure Grant has thought this through well enough to know where he
stands, and we can all feel however we feel about it.

[RBW] Re: Cycling Increased during Pandemic

2020-10-02 Thread aeroperf

When I lived in Germany there were essentially two kinds of bars.
The drops were used by the “kids” on fast road bikes, and some guys in my
long range touring group.
The Albatross style was used by almost everybody else, from 12 year old
school kids to grey-haired Bavarian ladies in full wool coats with two
cases of beer on the back rack.
There were a few who used what looked like Soma Osprey bars with vertical
end posts, but not many.

When I asked, the touring guys told me that some liked the more upright
riding position, while others liked the multiple hand positions of the
drops.

I had a straight bar hybrid bike. When they asked why the straight bar, I
could only say “That’s the way it came”. I had multiple offers to “fix
that”.

[RBW] Re: sram bar end+ Xt rear derallure

2020-10-02 Thread Bill Lindsay
Short answer, no it won't. The longer answer on 'what would it take to
make it work', would depend on exactly what models of everything you have.
"XT" is not specific enough. Read the number off the backside of the
parallelogram. For example if you have an M751-SGS, then the best thing
would probably be to buy a new set of 9-speed shimano bar ends (or just the
right one, if you can find it). Depending on the exact combo of things you
have, there may be a JTEK travel adjuster or similar setup that could make
it work. JTEK Shiftmate has a huge compatibility chart for your specific
stuff.

You can drop down from Bill's Velocity quill to Velocity A23 rims and still
have a nice wheelset and save a little more. I use A23s on my Roadeo.

[RBW] Re: Comparing drop bars to uprights: Path Less Pedaled

2020-10-02 Thread Ben Mihovk
Russ actually bought that Sam...so no longer a test bike :)

For three whole days now, I've ridden an Atlantis with Chocos and I really
like my hands at the ends of the bars. The bike handles like a bus, so the
"liveliest" hand placement on that bike is not too jumpy or twitchy.
Plus...I just plod along at Party Pace (as they say on PLP) on pavement.
It'd probably be more stable with drop bars and able to hold my line better
in speedy spurts, but I'm not riding in a pack any time soon.

The ultimate I think is what I have on my Sam:

HED Belgium C2 Plus rims
White Industries MI5 rear hub
Dynamo front hub of your choice

That would be about an $800 wheelset all-new, but it's perfect for a light
Sam build. If I had to try to get close on a budget, I'd substitute
Shimano M737 hubs from ebay, and Velocity Quill rims. Then you could get
it done for around $400 or so.

[RBW] Comparing drop bars to uprights: Path Less Pedaled

2020-10-02 Thread dougP
PLP has had a test bike from Rivendell for a while now. It was originally
delivered with upright bars. They recently changed to drops for a head to
head test of bars. Interestingly he liked the drops better, although he's
had no complaints about the uprights. Here's the link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-yyNxJcF5M

My question is whether anyone has determined a preferred location for hands
in relation to the pivot point of the handlebars? Hands in front, as with
drops? Hands behind, as with uprights?

What drives the question is my experience with my Atlantis. I rode it for
many years with drops, and was quite pleased with the handling. However,
over a period of years my hands developed numbness after a while on a
ride. I rode primarily on the tops & brake hoods. While on a trip, using
a rental bike with flat bars, I noticed a complete lack of hand numbness.
Hopping back on the Atlantis when I got home, the same hand numbness issue
was there. I've tried various upright bars, first with the same 10cm stem
I'd always used, then with a dirt drop. The numbness is long gone but the
bike does seem more sensitive to steering input with the uprights vs the
drops.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

[RBW] Re: BRP

2020-10-02 Thread Bill Lindsay
Doug pointed out discounts are common.

That's totally true, but I think the distinction Michael Gordon was making
is that none of your example discounts are granted based on race, ethnicity
or national origin.

The example I would give is this: I'm Norwegian-American. There is a
college scholarship for which I can apply that is earmarked for
Norwegian-American applicants. I could hypothetically apply for that
scholarship. If I get the scholarship, I could turn around and sue the
organization that gave it to me on the basis of the quote on the ACLU
website. It's a benefit that is granted based on my ethnicity.

Similarly, the person who takes RBW to court would need to apply for the
BRP discount, get the discount, and then sue RBW for giving them a
discount. It would be a strange motivation to sue Rivendell Bicycle Works,
but I think the strict interpretation of the law may mean there's an
argument to be had, and I think the outcome of that argument could be
really good.

I don't think there is a grounds upon which an aggrieved consumer could sue
Rivendell Bicycle Works because they had to pay normal price. You'd have
to get the discount to have a case.

I don't think the spirit of the law prohibits a private business from
electing to pay reparations. I'll talk it over with my JD friends.

I happily contributed to BRP, but after hearing the legality issue, I'm
hoping they would donate the funds to a good (related) cause instead of
this program. Lawyers are expensive and margins are razor thin in bike

Yes it's known as redlining, or in this case would be kind of a reverse
redlining. Unless RBW has an army of lawyers on retainer (they don't) this

[RBW] Wheelset advice sought (and WTB)

2020-10-02 Thread Erik Wright
Hey bunch,

I recently sold my Roadini and so my Sam H has taken the reins as my drop
bar road bike. Until this week it'd been my fendered, basketed, dynamo'd,
Choco bar'd townie, but a Mercier Kilo WT fixed gear has taken over that
slot through the upcoming winter.

Riding my Sam this morning definitely felt like I was pushing some weight.
I don't expect my Sam to feel as nimble and snappy as the Roadini did, but
I think it could certainly lose some weight. Based on what I've learned
over the years, it sounds like the wheelset is the easiest place to make a
noticeable difference. I'm currently running a Rich-built Atlas rear wheel
(unsure of the hub) and a Shimano dynamo'd Dyad in the front, with 700x44
Snoqualmie Pass standard casing tires. Seems like a pretty hefty wheelset
(especially for my 150lb self) that makes sense for the commutery/touring
build, and maybe it still makes sense for a more road-oriented build, but
I'm curious to hear some thoughts.

What wheelset (hub/rim combo) would you recommend for a Sam that's going to
see 80% pavement, 20% rougher stuff/gravel, carry *light* 5-10lb loads from
time to time, and likely run 700x38 tires (to leave the option open for
fenders)?

If you've got something in your parts bin that fits the bill, send me a PM.
If buying used, I'd like to spend something in the $200 range (flexible
based on tubeless ready/dynamo/etc).

Maybe I should just cut off the second top tube to shave grams? Maybe then
it'd plane

Erik, Philly

2020-10-02 Thread dougP
My understanding of BRP is that it is a *discount* off the list price.
These are given routinely in retail. When I got to the grocery store, I'm
given a discount because we are members of their discount program. Cutting
coupons can also yield a discount off the list price. My local bicycle
club has a discount arrangement with some shops. Adventure Cycling has a
list price for maps and a discount for members. Gas stations have differing
prices for cash & credit card. Qualifications for discounts seem to be
determined by the vendor.

[RBW] Re: My Electric Sam

2020-10-02 Thread Ash
Very nice bike Sky. Sounds like a fun project too.

While most electric bikes are not as much fun to ride as a Riv, some peddle
assist does have real use. If I ever end up having a 10-15 miles commute,
I'd definitely consider converting my Susie to electric. I love the
simplicity of a normal bike. I also love biking 10-15 miles with pure
muscle power. In reality, I'd probably end up driving more often than not,
due to time constraints, needing to shower when I get to work etc. An
e-bike solves those problems. When there are dozen of traffic lights/stop
signs along the way, any quicker acceleration after every stop quickly adds
up and shortens the commute time considerably. If used wisely,
peddle-assist makes the ride safer too. I would not be lazy to slow down
in iffy conditions (such as a car looking to enter the road, stop signs),
because there's not much effort to regain the speed!

Enjoy your e-Sam!

 Hi -

In spite of the virus, the fires, etc., 2020 has been really good for
me. I seem to accumulate lots of parts. I have no room for them. So I want
to send them to you! All prices below include shipping.

 1) Silver friction levers mated to Shimano bar end pods. These are in
great shape and have lots of miles left in them. These are the original
Silver shifters - not the second generation recently released. $10 shipped.

 2) Nitto Campee Rack. Not sure which rack this is - but it came off the
front of my son's SimpleOne. $10 shipped.

 3) MKS Track Pedals. Great, inexpensive, durable pedals. Also in great
 shape. $15 shipped.

 4) Vittoria 700c x 25/32mm tubes. $5 shipped for both.

 5) Shimano Flat Bar Brake Levers. In great shape. $10 shipped.

 6) Park Spanners. 13, 14 and 15mm. One each. $5 shipped for all three.

 7) Lumotec IQ Headlight. Plenty of wire here. Was mounted to the Nitto
rack above. Most of the wire ran to the tail light.

 8) Velocity Quick Release Skewer. Came on my Hubbuhubbuh. I think the
 OLD is 140mm.

 9) Tail Light. This went with the Lumotec IQ above. $2 shipped.

 10) Third Hand Tool. A piece of ancient history. I used to clamp my
brakes together with this thing to get cable slack, etc. $2 shipped.

 11) Couple of sidepull brakes. A Shimano 600 "standard" reach, and a
short reach brake. Not sure where these came from. Throwing in the lever
 in
the picture as well $5 shipped for both.

 12) Skewers from Schmidt Dynohubs. These take and allen wrench. $2
 shipped for both.

 13) Riese and Müller Handlebar Mount for Dynamo Light. In great shape.
 Used sparingly. $2 shipped.

 14) Ritchey 10 and 12cm Threadless Stems. These have two-bolt
faceplates. Not sure about the rise. $10 shipped each.

 15) Nitto UI-5GX Threadless Stems. These are some of the most elegant
stems anywhere. Four bolt faceplates. $15 shipped each.

 16) 18 tooth cog for your fixed gear. Not much wear on this one. Came
off my son's fixed gear before he rode it. $2 shipped.

 17) Nitto R Bottle Cages. These are the light ones. Very sleek and
elegant. The solid ones - not the hollow ones. $20 shipped each.

 18) Giant Threadless Stem. Not as pretty as the others - but it's a
long one: 13cm. Two bolt faceplate. $5 shipped.

If any of you are in the SF Bay Area and want to come to my house in
Richmond, California to pick up one or more items, I will happily give
 them
to you gratis for saving me the time, money and hassle of shipping them.

And if you want to send me money via Paypal - please use czech "at"
 sonic.net.

 Namaste,

 Corwin

[RBW] Redline Monocog 29er [Platypus: First Look]

2020-10-02 Thread Patrick Moore
Dick break, yes, and I will post photos, but not under the Platypus heading!

I owned a 2010 model (the one traded is 2012, I think, so similar -- the
later ones have slacker heads and steeper seat tubes) and it was a great
deal of fun. I'd converted it to drops (Salsa Bell Laps) but may well keep
this one with an upright bar of some sort, if I can find one that doesn't
hurt my left palm. And I hope to have 3" tires on it. A tank, but a fun
tank!

Someone offered me a Pugsley in trade (didn't you stop by once with your
Pugsley?) but only after I'd made the deal with the owner of the Monocog.
