[RBW] Two Sams on the last 2015 overnighter

2016-01-01 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
My friend, Greg, had the last two days of the year off from his REI job, so
despite damp (but warm for Virginia in Dec.) weather, we decided at the
last moment to get one last 80-mile overnighter in on our Sam Hillbornes.
We started at Hanover Court House, north of Richmond and headed to Bowling
Green (on Rt.301,) just south of Fredericksburg. Though we took our tents,
decided on a small cabin because of possible rain that night. It's always
fun to think you "pulled on over" on ol' man winter!

[RBW] Re: Homer vs. Sam vs. Bleriot

2015-12-24 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
I currently have three Rivs - all set up differently, so not
apples-to-apples, etc. But my Homer, set up for mixed surface riding,
mustachioed and fenderless, is more "sprightly" than my Sam, set up as my
tourer with bells and whistles, and my Atlantis, set up for "country day
rides" and good-weather overnighters. That said, like Philip mentions:
Cadillac ride / sports car, depending on what you wish. I don't think I
would seriously load my Homer down.

[RBW] Re: Heat Gun to Attach Patches to Bags

2015-11-30 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Meade, I usually like the peace of mind that stitching gives me and usually
use a fairly heavy duty needle and thread and a pair of needle-nosed pliers
to push it through the heavy material (carefully!). However, on the patch
you recently sent with me, I chose a placement on my bag that had an inside
tool pocket that precluded the use of needle and thread. After trying a hot
iron without success, I heated the patch slightly, then used a hot glue gun
on the backside. I was careful not to get too close to the edge (back of)
the patch, but not so far that the edge would lift eventually. Then I
burnished it while still hot. A small amount of glue creeped outside the
patch's edge, but was very easy to scrape off once dry. An important tip
would be to not overdo the amount of glue applied, while covering as much
of the back of the patch as possible.
Only time (and maybe temperature) will tell if this method works, but it
lays flat now. If I could, I would put a small stitch into each corner for
insurance.

[RBW] Re: Was a 55cm double top tube Hillborne ever made?

2015-11-23 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
The main difference between my (old) 56cm double TT and my (new) 55 cm
single TT Sams are that I used to be able to grasp the lower TT to lift the
bike without worrying about the frame pump, which I used to place between
the TT's! Actually, my original was first generation and had a "made to a
price" quality to the brazing and the paint. When Riv raised the price, my
guess is that they had Waterford try harder. My new one is as aesthetically
as nice as my Atlantis, IMHO.

[RBW] Re: Strada Rossa March 19th... you all are invited!

I will miss this event this year David. :( My excuse to come from the east
coast, my brother-in-law (and sister, of course!) has gotten a promotion
and moving to CT. I certainly have enjoyed the two Strada Rossas I've done!
Meeting you and your family & Ian's riding buddies have been a plus, for
sure.

The upside is that I can do some east coast rail trials with him.
Unfortunately, our Amtrak is not as upscale bike-travel-wise as Calif. is.

[RBW] Va. Capital Trail open!

2015-10-27 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hey all, the long-awaited Virginia Capital Trail is finally complete. 52
paved miles one-way, from Richmond to Williamsburg / Jamestown, along
historic Rt. 5, which follows the James River and passes many historic
sites & structures. Terrain is relatively flat - to - rolling. Some of us
from Richmond did an overnighter this past weekend, stopping at one of the
many plantations open to the public, Berkley Plantation, site of the first
Thanksgiving in the new (English) world. We stopped for lunch at Cul's
Courthouse Grill at Charles City Courthouse. Cul's is housed in a beautiful
old (former) general store and serves up great wholesome food and
libations. Then, on to the Chickahominy Riverfront Campground on the
Chickahominy River, seven miles from Jamestown, site of the first
successful English settlement in 1609. A short album of our trip on Flickr

Re: [RBW] FS - 61cm Atlantis, complete.

2015-09-07 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
David,

Recent chain suck problem solved. I had 3 - 4 cases in the last couple
months, but in preparation for (possibly) selling, I took the middle ring
off and inspected it carefully. Noticing what looked like shark teeth -
(funny how hard that is to detect while mounted on the crank!) - I replaced
the ring, but had not ridden it since. Today, I took it for a good spin and
Viola! Seems OK. The big ring that came with the bike is a 48T, so I think
I was favoring the middle ring more than I would if it were a 46T.

By the way, I had an inquiry from someone who did not want the saddle,
fenders or either of the two racks. I priced the at Ben's Cycles' prices
and divided by half and came to a sales price of $2753.50. Given that I
would not have to ship the fenders, I'd round it off to *$2725.00* without
those components.

I hope all is well in Redlands and your well is full!

Paul

[RBW] mid-Virginia overnighter

2015-08-30 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
On August 29-30, 2015, I did this solo overnighter using a modified version
of Meade Anderson's Lee's Retreat ride, along the lightly-used Civil War
motor route. The new 55cm black cream Sam Hillborne tourer with a new
front HAR performed in an exemplarily fashion!

I left Farmville, Va. Saturday morning headed to the High Bridge:

http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/high-bridge-trail.shtml#general_information

Then, I was headed west to Holliday Lake State Park, near Appomattox Court
House Historic Park. 40 miles, total for Day One. One gravel section for
the day.

Overnighting there, I woke early, visited the lake briefly for morning
light, had breakfast and headed toward Appomattox Court House Park on
gravel roads (and one stream ford) where I turned back south east and
Pamplin City, a ghost town, the western end of the High Bridge Rail Trail
20 miles to my van at Farmville. Total: 45 miles for Day Two.

Total mileage was 85 miles, plus about 6 miles for goofing around the park
and a couple side trips for sightseeing.

With temps between the low 60's and mid-80's and no chance for rain, who
could ask for more in August in Virginia? This area is very pretty, low
traffic
and quickly becoming one of my favorites within striking distance from
Richmond, Va. I can recommend the area for anyone within 100 miles of
Farmville or Appomattox.

[RBW] FS - 56cm Sam Hillborne frameset

2015-08-06 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
I moved down a size on my touring rig to a new black cream Sam. So, my
older 56cm (orange) double TT frame set is up for sale. I'm the only owner,
having purchased it new, completely built at the end of 2010 from
Renaissance Bicycles in Henderson, NC (a Riv dealer of sorts) when he
closed up shop. I used it for touring (overnighters - to - weeklong). 3,600
miles.
Included in the sale is the Tange headset (just cleaned and greased),
Shimano BB, and a new - still in package - Kalloy Uno SP-248 seat post. No
dings or dents and all paint chips were minor, mainly on the drive side
chain stay, but are expertly touched up. Decals are perfect and the frame
is treated with framesaver. Standover is 83.4cm and the (theoretical
horizontal) TT is 59cm.

Images and many closeups can be seen on my Flickr
album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/sets/72157656461583886.

Price is $700, plus shipping and insurance from the east coast. Please
contact me off-list. Thanks for looking!

David,

Of course, there's always the custom route. Back in 1989, before
threadless, I had Steve Potts fillet braze be a beautiful stem with a cap
for a (new, then) Bontrager fillet brazed Cx-based bike. I think I got the
idea from Bruce Gordon's Rock Road frames back then. Loved that thing!
(Bike stem) But, eventually sold it to a friend so that I can visit now
then. Still makes my heart pitter-patter to se it:

Ha! Yes, you're totally correct. I only mention Surly as their otherwise

I'm sure there's a reason for it it, probably that it's easier to add
spacers but you can't take it away.

As for threadless question... I'm moving pretty strongly into the prefer
threadless camp. It seems like a pretty good change away from a good but
fiddly design to something that works well for me. Open face stems alone
 make it worthwhile!

I wish Surly would have proportionately taller head tubes on their

Crosscheck for example has a 160mm headtube. To my way of thinking, that
should be 190mm. 180 would be a good compromise. Then you could get rid of
30mm of spacers on the steerer, which would help it look cleaner and less
 hacky.
I guess they don't want to alienate the 'Slam dat stem' crowd... :-)

The vast majority of production bikes come with pre-cut steerers, and
how much they are cut depends on the manufacturer. Generally it's rare to
have more than 40mm of adjustment above the headset upper. In fact, the
fork is usually fully installed, and all we do at the shop is maybe
 install
the stem and assure proper headset adjustment. I usually like to move the
stem to its highest possible setting (top of the spacer stack, flipped for
 rise).

The QBP brands (Salsa and Surly) are a notable exception, with every
size coming with a fork that has yet to be installed, with the steerer
uncut and without the star nut not pressed in. When I was service manager
at a shop, I mandated that we leave the steerers uncut on these bikes.
However, that does make things difficult with a lot of customers who don't
understand how threadless forks work or why anyone would want to run their
bars that high. Their aesthetic first impressions (all too often a
critical part of bike buying) are totally thrown off by the spacer stack,
and if they test ride the bike with a normal stem height they're
 unnerved
by the extra spacer stack above the stem threatening to poke them in the
solar plexus. So, there are downsides for the retailer who leaves them
 uncut.

Yes, Rivendell avoids all this with 1 threaded headsets and quill
stems but from a mechanical perspective, threadless is really superior.
With steel steerer tubes there is no practical limit to how high you can
run the bars above the headset. In fact, a high bar setup feels much more
solid with a threadless stem than with a quill stem, and headset
 adjustment
is far easier. Of course, as James and others have pointed out, achieving
Riv-esque bar height with a threadless setup requires slightly more
deliberate choices on the part of the bike designer and bike assembler.

With carbon steerers becoming de rigeur on high-end bikes, there is
much more of a practical limit on how high you want to run a stem. I'm
sure different manufacturers would say different things but I would never
want to run a carbon fork with more that about 40 or 50mm of spacers max.

How do you determine where to cut the steerer tubes on your threadless

Is there a standard human bar height that works for everyone shops go

My local shops cut low but sometimes they do some a little higher than
usual. Was wondering. With RBW bikes, we have slot of options with quill
 stems.

2014-12-12 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
It could take you a little longer, but if you want to get off the road for
a bit, the Delaware Water Gap Recreational Area is nice. The Old Mine Road
is on the NJ side of the Delaware River and the (recommended by me) McDade
Rec.Trail on the PA side will take you north from the little township of
Delaware Water Gap on I-80 to Milford, PA on I-84, east of Scranton. PA
Route 6 east can be accessed there and I think it is a designated bike
route. I'm from VA, so you'd need more onto on that. The hgwy is not
west-coast standards for shoulders, but it could work. I'll bet Bobby
Montclair in NJ could verify. There are a lot of rail trails, etc. on the
NJ side of the river, but most likely just a bit too far east for you?

Don't know how tough back to back centuries are for a commuter and

Bike friendly routes would be the most important thing, I think. I know
there is a MUP that runs from Baltimore to York, PA, so maybe that is a
 start.

Don't know if I'd even dare to do this, but it would be fun and memorable.
So I'm looking into it to see if it even seems realistic for me.

there is a MUP that runs from Baltimore to York, PA, so maybe that is a
 start.

Don't know if I'd even dare to do this, but it would be fun and memorable.
So I'm looking into it to see if it even seems realistic for me.

What's the best way to plan a long ride like this from Baltimore, MD to
 Scranton, PA?

Any east coasters know some bike friendly routes?

I've only done a few centuriesin the last year and a half, so don't know
if I would be able to handle a double century going to Scranton, as its 200
miles. Maybe layover at a motel one night and travel the rest the next day.
Don't know how tough back to back centuries are for a commuter and
recreational century and half century rider like me when I am in shape in
the spring and summer and fall.

Re: [RBW] Re: Help Choosing Tires - Jack Brown vs. Compass Stampede Pass

2014-12-09 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thomas,

I have been using the (old) Vittoria Randonneur Hypers (now Voyagers) in 35
38 mm on three bikes for a few years now with thousands of miles and no
flats. Not only that, they seem as supple as Marathon Supremes without the
price, though might not be quite as light. Getting great mileage, too.
(Haven't worn one out yet.) I like them a lot for pavement and gravel
surfaces.

The Compass tires are great, no question in my mind. I've been commuting

 put Pasela TG's back on.

Unfortunately, my Compass experience got me itching for something a bit
more lively than the TG's. The Soma New Xpres sound good - I was also
considering Vittoria Voyager Hyper after trawling old posts. Anyone care to
 compare those apples?
