[RBW] Re: WTB: Paul Motolites and Love Levers 2.5s

2021-03-28 Thread Eric Marth
Jason makes a great point. Things have a better chance of turning up when
you call or email for specifics rather than refreshing that product page!
If you get a definitive idea of when those parts will be back in stock at
Paul it will help you decide if you want to purchase from Blue Lug instead.
Food for thought :)

Re: [RBW] Re: What's your favorite painting of a Bombadil?

2021-03-25 Thread Eric Marth
Jason -- I'm one who loves natural finishes and the way things look as they
wear out. Patinated copper, weathered cedar, diamond plate steel thresholds
with 100 years of foot traffic.

There isn't a paint that can compete with the subtle gradations in steel or
*especially* the sweet brass brazing around the lugs. Few things are as
lovely as that delightful blend of copper and zinc.

I understand there may be issues with corrosion over time but if regular
spot-coating gives you enough peace of mind to roll on then I'd say keep it
as is.

I'm not much for decals, either. The head badge is plenty! Subtlety can be
sublime.

Thanks for the suggestions! I know what you mean Michael about
choosing a paintjob that's too near an original color without being an
original color. I have thought about Atlantis blue-green too, as its such
 a
beautiful and iconic color but I also think it is for Atlantis' and
Atlantis' alone. Similarly I've thought about Riv blue because it's just
awesome, but also not very imaginative.

The grey of Joe's custom is pretty enticing as an option, to be honest,
though I would just do a white/cream panel headtube and seat tube collar.
British Racing green is also up near the top of the list now, thanks for
the suggestion! I've always loved it as a colour and it does look great
 on
the Bombadil - and is a homage to my Clem H which I sold to fund this
 Bombadil...

Seems typical of Riv, tweaking the classics with each iteration. The

Re: [RBW] Let's see your shop and workbench

2021-03-04 Thread Eric Marth
Thanks everyone for sharing your benches. This is really cool!

Thank you, Doug! I like to clear the bench at the end of the day, setting
things to rights is meditative. Doesn't always happen!

Eric, wow, looks like a lifetime of mechanical work and riding. It's funny
how sometimes having two of the same tool comes in handy. I really like the
custom made stem rack, that's great. And those old GP-era Bridgestone
posters are sweet. The Grainger box means you must be really serious. (I
love McMaster-Carr. Last time I ordered metric screws they arrived the next
morning.) Also dig what looks like a bench for kids.

Alan – I love the ingenuity of a hideaway bike bench. A Murphy bench? A
concertina bench? I remember listening to Car Talk on a lot of long drives
in the countryside. This was during the rerun era but before Tom Magliozzi
died. Dropping the cigar reminds me of their story about the time a *car* fell
out of their vehicle lift at the shop.

Jason, also making do in an apartment, I dig it! Looks like you've got some
nice plants and a cozy space, and I do spy your dog there! Also dig the
Kitchen Aid mixer. I recently found a fully functional one at the dump.
This about sixteen years after a friend found one on the side of the road.

Good luck with them boiling temps, Collin! That looks like a great place to
work when the weather's nice. Is that a brass Honjo fender? I love brass. I
love the way it ages. Sometimes I accelerate the aging by aerating brass
parts with white vinegar.

[RBW] Re: Let's see your shop and workbench

2021-03-03 Thread Eric Marth
This is sweet! I like your bike and bench rotation, George. And envy your
proper work stand. Those Ikea cabinets are a big bang for the buck. If
they're not Ikea, well, even better, probably! I had been eyeing a friend's
old steel paper cabinets from the USPTO, thought they'd be good for tools.

Sean, that's a nice one. Glad to hear your bench is still going strong a
decade in. I like to thank my past self when I find stuff useful later on.

Philip, old shop sounds great. AC and heat! My grandfather cycled through
many partial vehicle restorations, mostly VWs (several Bugs, a van, even a
Thing!) and also had a dune buggy for a while. Not sure of the make. I do
love the wooden Felo drivers. Stripped mine of the factory finish and
rubbed 'em with boiled linseed oil. Super great handle shapes. I have a
single no. 2 JIS Phillips driver for when it's required. Congrats on your
pending Clem :)

Re: [RBW] New look for rivbike.com and new News blog

2021-02-12 Thread Eric Marth
Thanks for the alert, Dave! Been looking forward to seeing the redesign.
Striding in the right direction :)

A few thoughts follow.

*Homepage photographs*
I really dig the wild, free, low-light, long exposure photographs here. And
I generally really dig and admire the idea that a place that sells
incredible bikes has a front page where you can't even really see the
frames.

*Product pages*
I'm glad that you can finally see things in bigger and better resolution. A
lot of these pictures are way way way crispier than on the old site. The
mouse-over function on the old version never worked for me. I find that the
huge, long column of text is a bit tricky to parse and difficult to read.
Would it be possible to have a gallery of product pictures towards the top
with the text below, with the text running the full width of the page?

*Category pages*
I would find it easier to browse if all of the products were displayed in a
grid with each shown at the same size. Easier to scan, allows the eye to
follow a straight line.

*Restock email alerts*
Gotta have these alerts

*Newly updated/added*
Would it be possible to have a page where newly added and updated and
restocked items could appear together? Crust does this and I appreciate it.
I've noticed another Crust comparison above, they did a nice job. But their
site is almost entirely a store, without the blog, news feed and tons of
articles and information to incorporate. I appreciate Will's re-stock
updates!

*Staff bikes*
I have always dug this page and wish it was more actively updated! Looking
forward to the return.

*Article page*
This could be organized a bit better, perhaps with headings for categories
with individual articles bulleted below. Having to click into each
sub-category page is a little cumbersome.

*Sizing and geo page*
The chart is large! I can zoom in using the zoom function in my browser or
right click to view at full size but on my MacBook the chart displays at a
size that is small and pixelated and unreadable without user-end
manipulation.

[RBW] Wool bandanas?

2021-02-02 Thread Eric Marth
Anyone out there know of a maker or vendor of wool bandanas? I'm talking
about 20x20" squares of wool, similar to a standard cotton bandana.

Tom Bihn had something called the Shepherd's Wool Utility Cloth
 which
came in some very nice colors and seemed perfect. Apparently more of these
coming in the spring.

Thanks for the help

purchases. Thanks!

Pictures are here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/zCe2GidtE6gdsFgU6

*Rivendell Saddlesack Medium, olive green – $200 plus shipping to you*This
is an original-issue Saddlesack in size medium and has never been installed
on a bike. New old stock. Leather is clean and crease-free. Wax olive green
canvas. There is a little bit of wear at the edges, you know the way waxed
canvas can fade a bit. The brass is showing a bit of patina and has
darkened with age. With the old riveted metal plate, this one is number
00083. Coroplast sheet in the bottom.

*Rivendell David Lance Goines poster – $15 plus shipping to you*This has
never been mounted. It was received and stored rolled. Super heavy paper,
high quality print. From the ubiquitous Bay Area designer you know and love
from Chez Panisse cookbooks, menus and posters. Picture borrowed from
John’s etsy. Will ship rolled.

*All City cross levers – $10 plus shipping to you*In-line levers for
caliper or canti brakes. For clamp diameter of 31.8, shims for 26.0 bars
included.

*Tektro Aero Brake Levers RL340 – $15 plus shipping to you*These will work
with caliper or canti brakes. Hoods have some wear, screen-printed Tektro
label partially worn away. Sorry if you’re really into sporting a nice,
clean, crisp TEKTRO label on your levers.

*Bondhus 4mm ball-end driver – $5 plus shipping to you *Made in US ball-end
driver for bottle cages, mostly.

*Pletscher kickstand hardware – $5 plus shipping to you *One new plate
(black), one new bolt, two new plastic spacer/sandwich bits. One used
plate, one used spacer. The bolt was greased and installed in a kickstand
off the bike but never mounted. Bolt is uncut.

*Summer gloves, size XL – $10 plus shipping to you*Recently purchased from
Rivendell. These have 40 miles on them. They’re just a little too small for
me.

*Kucharik wool tights – $40 plus shipping to you*Black wool tights. With a
leather chamois, 9-inch zipper at the leg cuff, cotton drawstring closure.
These are in fair shape, some holes in the seat and in the area opposite
the seat. I’ve done my best to show the holes. I think they actually don’t
go all the way through, but almost. Lots of life and use left in them! I
would keep them if they fit me. They are labeled a medium but I’d say
they’re like a small. The waist laid flat is 15” (with a few inches of
stretch), inseam is 31”.

*Van Heusen seersucker shirt, medium – $5 plus shipping to you*A nice
seersucker in white and what looks to me like gray stripes. It’s 21” from
pit to pit and 31” from top of collar to bottom hem. There may be a small
hole somewhere. Button collar. Made in Indonesia. Label says “100%
seersucker” which I take to mean all cotton.

*Chums glasses straps / “Eyewear retainers” – $9 for all three plus
shipping to you*Black, white/grey stripe and tangerine. Brand new, standard
length. Made in USA.

Re: [RBW] Chainstay dimples and kickstand kisses

2021-01-15 Thread Eric Marth
Thanks again to all for input and replies.

And thanks to Dave S for recommending the frame-specific kickstand plates.
Got a pair, they work great. Part of the trouble with the existing plate
(installed by previous owner or their mechanic) is that it was a modified
Pletscher plate. Had to be modified to clear the chainrings.

I removed the stand because it was super stiff and it wasn't closing. I dry
brushed it and then blasted it with penetrating oil, which is disgusting. I
then cleaned it as well as I could with several passes with brushes, rags
and compressed air. Then appleid some Boeshield.

I touched up the frame damage shown in the original post by lightly sanding
and then applied some Testors. I wrapped some Newbaums on the stays and
carefully re-installed the kickstand. It works like a new kickstand with
lots of snap and a feather touch to open and close.

[RBW] Re: Completing the Rivendell catalog archive

2021-01-11 Thread Eric Marth
After some research and consultation with John Bennett I have determined
(decided?) that the collection of Rivendell catalogs I posted is indeed a
full run. In looking at completed auctions, blog posts and completed sales
including Bike Tinker's "Rivendell Propaganda" post and sale as well as the
Bike Recyclery Riv/Bstone lot, I can't find evidence of catalogs that I
don't have.

There are some numbering irregularities that lead to a bit of confusion.
The second catalog is labeled Number 3. And it seems the count was lost
somewhere along the line. While the most recent catalog is "The twentieth
catalog," there are only 18 total catalogs. If you consider my pictures of
the catalog run you can disregard the 2018 frames catalog (horizontal
layout, illustrated cover).

Thanks to all for the help and if anyone has information to contribute or
theories to disprove please let me know.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tell me about your super-wide drops

2021-01-06 Thread Eric Marth
Wow, thanks for the considerable insight, everyone! I really appreciate the
assessments, personal histories, preferences and the rest.

I'm currently running Albatross bars but find I most often ride in the
forward position of the bars, in front of the brake levers. It's nice to
take the full upright position to change the grip and riding posture but
I'm finding it is my least favorite grip. I do love the look of the bars,
can't deny it and won't try to hide it.

The bike I have now is a little big for me, I can *just* stand over it. Not
much seatpost showing (similar, perhaps, to the too-big Sam that Grant
wrote about in one of the readers). When I first bought it there were some
45cm drops installed, the widest I'd tried to that point. I thought they
were pretty groovy and almost felt great. But the stem was way too long and
I had become possessed of the idea of trying out Albatross bars.

Of the big bars out there the Nitto/Crust Shaka bars have my attention. As
others have mentioned the cost and time involved in a swap is considerable.

Thanks again to everyone for sharing.

Thanks for the input, Eric, I appreciate it.

My stand had the same pieces of rubber on the top of the stays (one was

This moves me to resolve to explore more of our trails north of where I

Looking at the cap in question, I don't see anything special about it.
It's cotton, its proceeds will not benefit any charity, and it's
*used *(albeit in almost-new condition). Why are people willing to bid
this cap up so high? And more importantly, am *I* now slightly
wealthier because I have a stack of similar used Rivendell caps in
different colors, including this mustard-yellow version? :)

For reference does anyone have a picture of the first catalog they could

Re: [RBW] silver shifter slip under load

2020-10-12 Thread Eric Marth
Installed Silver (v1) shifters on Shimano pods last night/this morning. I
had a problem very similar to what Nikko described above. The lever for the
rear derailleur worked like a dream. But the one operating the front mech
was difficult to use.

Surly LHT, Albatross bars, Shimano pods. Front derailleur is a Shimano
Tiagra FD-4503.

After some trial and error I have them working nicely. The Shimano levers I
removed worked just fine. I installed the new Silvers using instructions
for SuperMix Shifters from a 1999 Riv catalog: Snipped and modified the
shifter boss stop, mounted lever and washers, applied beeswax to the wing
nut. Installed cables as normal. The lever for the rear worked just fine.
The lever for the front was *very *difficult to operate. At first I thought
I couldn't move it at all.

I took the troubled lever off. With a closer look I noticed the shifter
boss wasn't sitting perfectly flat. The channel I cut there needed to be a
bit wider to clear the nub in the shifter pod. So I filed that down some
more. And I had incorrectly run the cable at the pinch bolt. I had been
going under the tab, I needed to go over top the tab (consulted
installation manual and some forums). This changed the leverage a bit to my
advantage.

While doing this I also replaced the cable and housing. I didn't see
anything troublesome in the cables and housing so far as crimps, dimples or
kinks. I applied some additional beeswax to the threads of the wing nut.
Reassembled.

Now the shifter is working as expected.

Nikko – I'm having the same problem with a set of Silvers I installed
today. Anything improve your shifting?

hi guys, how do you keep your silver shifters form slipping under load,
i tighten the retention bolt but when i play with it it slowly loosens
 with
multiple shifts, i do lots of hills and need confidence that i wont ghost
 shift under load.

 thanks

[RBW] Silver shifters v1: Force required w. front derailleur

2020-10-10 Thread Eric Marth
Hi all – I just installed a set of Silver shifters, mounted to Shimano
pods. The rear derailleur is working great, with a light touch. However the
front derailleur requires some serious English in order to shift up (adding
tension). The lever moves normally with the wingnut snugged up when the
cable is detached from the derailleur.

It shifts and holds position so far but the amount of force required seems
excessive. Certainly requires a lot more than the Shimano levers I just
removed.

Is this typical of these levers? If not, does anyone have an idea of how I
might correct?

Cables and housing are brand new, housing ends are clean. No tight bends or
kinks to the housing. Started with barrel adjuster backed out one and a
half turns.

Thanks for the help!
