[RBW] Re: My Purple Glorious was Stolen
Fantastic news! Terrific team effort. While we're on the subject of bike theft, please keep a look out for my Rivish Austro-Daimler Superleicht (picture attached). Stolen from my garage (yes, it was locked, but even a stout cable lock is no match for bolt cutters) in North Beach, San Francisco, on June 19th. The bike was registered at BikeIndex.org, and I filed a police report and posted a "stolen!" notice on Craigslist. What I need now is for Brad, Andy, Will, Chalida, TR, and every other Bay Area lister to search everywhere. Hey, you never know. [RBW] Re: Breaking in a leather Brooks
Proofide contains beef tallow. Obenauf's LP doesn't. Some people who work with leather professionally say that tallow is good for leather. Other say that tallow goes rancid and that it's bad for leather. After spending at least two hours reading the arguments and testimony of professionals and hobbyists, I, for one, have concluded that Obenauf's LP (which is mainly beeswax and bee propolis) is a good saddle goop. Huberd's Shoe Grease might be good, too. It's also made with beeswax, but it includes pine tar. I haven't tried it yet. Whatever goop you choose, go easy, as others have said. (Apply it once a month maximum, if you live in a dry climate. Otherwise maybe once quarterly?) If you want to go down a leather-treatment rabbit hole, here's one place to begin: http://dalehavencox.weebly.com/huberds-shoe-grease---best-ingredients-and-best-price.html Enjoy your B17! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Nice conspicuity finds at the Japanese import store
Those LED valve caps are great -- BUT the batteries inside them last only about three or four hours. At least mine did. I stumbled across them on eBay, bought them, liked them, and then on my second or third ride, noticed they weren't working. Inquired with seller. Seller told me it's normal for the lights to run out of juice after about three or four hours of riding, and added, "You can replace the batteries." Now, each LED valve cap holds three AG10 button batteries. I calculated how many I would burn through in a year. Then I removed the dead batteries from my LED valve caps (to keep them out of the landfill, because I'm a hippie that way) and threw the LED valve caps in the trash. I hope Bill's LED valve caps work for much longer than mine did! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborn
Carla: About five years ago I bought a brand-new 56 Sam in 700c. Loved it: comfortable, stable, versatile, fun. I only sold it because I discovered that I much prefer my bikes pre-scratched and at least 20 years old. But that was just my particular illness. The Sam was (is) still a terrific bike. Oh, and for all of its good manners and confidence-inspiring stability, it still moved me down the road just as quickly as my Miyata road bike ever did. Re: [RBW] Re: PSA: VP Pedals on sale
No matter how often we discuss this topic of right livelihood -- maybe once a year? -- I always find it interesting. By and large, I try to buy merchandise from Rivendell and to buy labor from my LBS. Once in a while, I'll buy an item from an online merchant, particularly if, per Grant's post above, said merchant sounds like an actual business with actual staff, and, yes, if it offers a good deal on something (such as VP Vice pedals) that Riv and my LBS don't stock. I love Rivendell and I love the people there, so I do support them. But today all I have in my Riv shopping cart is ferrules and two tubes. I don't need the tubes. And I've already loaded up on various parts, books, bandannas, and pine tar soap. But come to think of it (duh), maybe I should buy a gift certificate to use toward future purchases. That would give Riv some cash flow -- an advance of sorts. Right? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: From the mouths of babes.
Marc: Awesome! There is hope. Thanks for posting. I agree with Ian: the social acceptance of bicycles may well vary with region -- or even within a given zip code. I teach at a university and, years ago, I thought my students might think it was cool if I brought my bike helmet to class and set it on the lectern next to my briefcase or bag. But then I realized that most students don't ride, and that in their eyes, anyone over 23 who rides a bike for transportation is either impoverished or a total dork. Likely both. It doesn't matter if you ride a Magna or a Rivendell. Oh, well. I still ride to school. But I no longer carry my helmet into the classroom. Re: [RBW] 1994 Bridgestone Catalog

Scott has probably already done his research, but just in case it helps anyone else on the list, here are four bars that, as far as I can tell, offer a similar shape: - Nitto B2522 Jitensha bar: aluminum, 580mm wide, no rise - Ahearne + MAP bar: aluminum, 575mm or 615mm wide, 25mm rise - Nitto B206 Nordeast bar: chromoly, 525mm wide, 15mm rise - VO Postino bar: aluminum, 570mm wide, no rise Yes, they differ in finish and they may vary in durability, but I find it hard to tell for sure since most handlebar retailers don't mention results of EN testing or other tests. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: silly question re: cyclometers
Hi Everybody: Because I'm not very good at reading cue sheets or Google-map directions while riding, you-all now have me considering a navigation device for the first time ever. So, some questions for the group: Please name a device (whether it's the Garmin Edge 20 or Cateye Urban or something similar) that is so simple that a Luddite / technical moron can use it for route directions. - Does this device give audible audio instructions such as "turn right in 20 meters," or does it only show "right" or "left" or whatever on its tiny screen? If the latter, is the word or symbol on the screen easy to see and to follow? - Can this device easily upload and use cue-sheets / route directions from a computer? - Does this device not require the use of a smartphone? - Can this device hold a charge for at least eight hours, and preferably ten? I'd love to hear of a super-simple-to-use and relatively inexpensive device that can give me accurate and timely instructions on when to turn. Any other feature (speed, distance, time, heart rate, map of route traveled for boasting purposes) is a bonus. Your advice, please? Specific product names especially appreciated! And if you've outgrown a device because it's too basic for you, you may have a buyer in me. Thanks, Evan E. in S.F. But if one or more should break, I, like Bill, will report it to the list in the interest of science and safety. Then I might buy a bag of those stainless steel zip ties that Tim found! But what I really want to know is: Bill, are standard zip ties actually recyclable? The zip ties that I've seen are nylon, and my curbside-recycling-collection people do not mention nylon as an acceptable material. Please advise. I agree: the medium Wald basket from Riv, affixed to a SOMA Lucas small front rack, is a good setup. I like Bill's and Deacon's notion of "pay it forward in goods to the group." [RBW] Re: Cotton Bar Tape - To Pad, Or Not
Frank, To further muddy the waters, I suggest you consider polyurethane instead of shellac. I like shellac, but a few weeks ago when I was running low on shellac, I recalled that a list member recommended polyurethane because it's more durable. And I had a can handy, so. Here it is. It's "green" and it does not smell of solvent: http://www.vermontnaturalcoatings.com/our-products/polywhey-natural-furniture-finish/ I used the satin finish. It's not slick or glossy. And it permits you to still feel some texture of the cotton. Since I applied the PolyWhey finish, I've ridden twice on long rides (~ 40 miles) in pouring rain. The tape has held up well. Just an option for you! Evan On Monday, April 25, 2016 at 8:24:37 AM UTC-7, Mattt wrote: > > I second your decision. Re: [RBW] Re: Gardian article about the changes in cycling culture...
If the author of the Guardian article were to visit, say, Northern California, and stumble upon an unofficial ride of lugged-steel enthusiasts, might he write a follow-up article with the same broad brush that he used to portray road/sports cyclists in England? If so, would he write something like this? "They're smiling, waving, normal-clothes-wearing all-around cyclists -- knowledgeable about all bikes, appreciative of all bikes and all riders, diverse and open-minded and open to adventure. They don't look down on me. They don't compete and compare Strava segments. They're immune to branding and corporate marketing. They bore the s**t out of me." Just kidding! And for the record, I am not defending what the author calls "sports cyclists." But I do refuse to dismiss all of them, with a single sweep of the hand, as "a miserable slog of unsmiling, un-nodding pink and black Lycra-clad" riders. My point is that some nuance would go a long way. Then again, a more nuanced article might not garner 1,487 comments on the Guardian website. Re: [RBW] Re: Gardian article about the changes in cycling culture...
"Cycling has become the new golf. It’s what men of a certain age, men with money and power, chat about after meetings." "The focus has moved to sportives, to carbon fibre frames, to Rapha Sky-branded kits, to gels, training techniques, times, pace and cadence." "It’s hard to find the hippies and the explorers any more. It’s all about the competition and the conformity." " . . . a miserable slog of unsmiling, un-nodding pink and black Lycra-clad sports cyclists." Hmm. Are the roads of England really clogged with unsmiling, affluent, Lycra-clad zombies? And do they all "look down on" the author of the article? That sounds like a sweeping condemnation with no particular evidence to support it. (And, yes, the road-cycling atmosphere sounds like particular segments of cycling in the USA, circa 2008.) Anyway: If the Guardian article is indeed more or less accurate, then England needs more just-riders and Riv riders! :) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Annoying unwanted commentary/advice while riding a Rivendell.
Ron said: "Evan, we're not bad people." I agree! I like everybody on this list. And I like bike riders in general. My only point is that every time I see a thread such as this one (and I've seen scores of them over the years) at least one person mentions how he or she dropped/passed a roadie or a Fred. The implication is that it is always the "roadie" or "Fred" who was rude or smug or competitive or aggressive or envious or dumb or ignorant or condescending. Are other riders sometimes not nice? Yes. Do they denigrate us or our bikes? Yes. Does each case require context? Of course. But my point remains: each culture (such as bicyclists) tends to subdivide into subcultures, and some members -- not all of them -- of these subcultures enjoy pointing fingers at the members of the other subcultures who are "doing it wrong." It's human nature. No big deal. I agree with Hugh: it's springtime! Here's wishing that Julian and everyone else on this list has a safe season, with more kindness on the roads. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Annoying unwanted commentary/advice while riding a Rivendell.
One day I'd love to see a thread in which no one says something to the effect of "Those Lycra-clad roadies stop laughing at my bike when I drop them without even trying." I am definitely not criticizing anyone on this thread, or any bike riders in particular. I'm just observing that many of us riders seem to be competitive to some degree, and on threads such as these we find various ways to bash roadies and Freds, etc., for being rude, smug, competitive, slow in the head, not strong enough to hang with us on our lugged steel bikes. Most Rivendell products do that for me, and I, like John's grandfather, am often willing to pay more for an item that will last. But not always. A cherrywood five-drawer dresser from Thomas Moser costs $6,460, and though it might well be the Atlantis of dressers and therefore constitute a good value, I can't touch that price. So I buy a decent but lesser dresser (clean and simple design, made of alder wood in the USA) and hope that my soul will be content with people and experiences that one cannot buy. I'm a fan of Rivendell because it slakes (and also increases) my thirst for craft and quality, beauty and utility, fun and freedom — and community, too. Re: [RBW] Recent Atlantis build highlights
James, To my eye, the color on your Atlantis demo bike appears to have more red/orange in it than the brownish Copper Metallic color shown on Waterford's site. Any thoughts on that? I'm only asking (and obsessing over small details) because I think the color on your bike is beautiful--right up there with Raleigh International Copper and Rivendell Rambouillet Orange! [RBW] For Sale: Large ShopSack, Olive
Good condition. Used gently and seldom. Happy to send you pictures if you like, but it looks just like the larger ShopSack that Rivendell shows here: http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/bashm-o.htm I'm selling this bag only because I've switched to a medium Wald basket, and the large ShopSack overflows a medium basket. $42 shipped in the Lower 48. [RBW] OT: Help My Colleague Replace Her Stolen Bike?
Dear Bay Area Rivsters, Last night, a colleague of mine lost her vintage Fuji to a bike thief. The bike was locked to the porch railing of my colleague's house in Oakland, but the thief snuck onto the porch and cut the motorcycle-grade cable lock. So: My colleague seeks a replacement bike, preferably something vintage and Japanese--Fuji, Nishiki, Panasonic, Centurion, Univega, Miyata, Bridgestone. Her PBH is about 84, so she needs a 56 or so. Diamond frame is fine, as is a mixte frame. She'd love something that can run tires at least 32mm wide. Upright bars a plus. Basket a plus. Fair condition is fine, and scratches are no problem at all. If you have such a bike hanging in your garage and you're willing to part with it, please reply to me off list and tell me your location and your desired price. I'm searching Craigslist to help find her a new old bike, but I also wanted to check with you-all. Anyone? Just think of the good holiday karma. Re: [RBW] Re: Recent Blug post; no date given, but perhaps it's today's, 0915.
I've always admired and appreciated Grant's candor. To me, it's one of the many things that makes Rivendell great. On the other hand, I feel kind of sorry for the customer who requested a replacement. Yes, the customer's request was unreasonable. Yes, the customer's note was rude. But the customer's request was a private request. And now his or her private request has been made public. That has got to hurt. (And no, I don't think the customer deserves a public bashing, which is what he or she is now receiving--not so much from Grant as from many people on this thread).
