[RBW] Shorty bolt for kickstand plate

2013-06-18 Thread Peter M
Does Rivendell still sell the short bolt for mounting kickstands on
kickstand plates? I am looking at the twin legger and the bolt is too long
for a bike with a kickstand plate. I know I got the short bolt at Rivendell
a while ago for another bike but I don't see it now. Would this fleabay one
work?

[RBW] Tan Sackvilles

2013-05-09 Thread Peter M
Thought I wouldn't like them but now that the pictures are up they look
really sharp. Might age a bit better than the greens did too since they are
already the sandy color my greens turned in all the bends and seams. I am
sad to see there are so few tweed offerings though. I would think tweed
really represents Rivendell, I mean it is the background on their website
and all...

[RBW] Crank Length Question

2013-04-29 Thread Peter M
So I have been putting more and more miles on the Bombadil and its an
awesome ride but I am having an issue riding in Brooklyn traffic. I keep
having to put my foot down at lights and don't want to dismount the saddle
every time since the 56cm size has the TT right there. Would going to
180mm cranks let me drop the saddle a bit and therefore be able to put my
foot a bit lower or am I just crazy? Ideally I would have something like a
Gomez but with the tubes and clearance that the Bombadil does. So outside
of saving my pennies for a custom I was thinking this would be some sort of
a solution, I know it wont be much but even being able to put my foot down
a bit more without overextending my hamstring would be great. Ebay has
these here cranks but they seem a bit overpriced
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sugino-Crank-Set-Old-School-BMX-Bike-180-mm-110-BCD-Polished-Alloy-/281037783536?_trksid=p2050601.m2372_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D207%26meid%3D7313463647018136641%26pid%3D100085%26prg%3D1112%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D281037783536%26%26clkid%3D7313464623718577442_qi=RTM1303752
 but
I don't see a lot of 180mm or longer cranks for sale unless I am looking in
the wrong place. Any help would be appreciated.

[RBW] First Rivendell Siting in the Wild

2013-04-27 Thread Peter M
Beautiful day in Brooklyn today, I was at the Botanical Gardens and saw the
first Atlantis (or any other Riv) in the flesh. Gentleman was older with
some friends on Rivish bikes and looked like they were going to a bike
parking area which didn't have an hour wait like the car parking. I don't
know why more people don't see how much riding a bike makes sense compared
to driving a car in a big city. 8th year car free and it is great.

Re: [RBW] A Mini-State O' The List Report - Topic Drift and a Note on Tone

2013-04-17 Thread Peter M
I dont want to speak for Joe but what I would add is if you are looking for
a used Rivendell bike because a new one is out of reach that is great IMO,
since it is getting you on a Rivendell and into the fold, so to speak. On
the other hand, if you are asking if someone makes a bike like Rivendell
for 1k cheaper, maybe not so much, maybe google that one for yourself. As
for gear, if it is sold out and you put out an apb on an item to see
someone has it that is fine but I try to get my gear new from Rivendell if
at all possible since I think that is where most small businesses make
their margins-on these so called accessories. Just my 2 cents.

As we make our way out of the winter, I know every one is getting
excited about spring riding. Even in the parts of the world where they
have real winters, things are looking good.

Over the past few weeks, mostly related to enthusiasm for riding, there
seems to have been a steady increase in the amount of topics not related
 to
the focus of this group. It's not to the point where it's a problem, but
given the size of this bunch and the tendency towards entropy, I thought
 it
might be a good moment to articulate it.

This group has continued to grow steadily. We're now north of 2,300
members and last month there were in excess of 2,000 posts. As I've
written before, 1,000 members was a big milestone, and more than twice
that is a bit mind-boggling. So, I have to start by thanking everyone
who has continued to make this a positive and interesting discussion. I
 especially
thank those who have been regular in sharing, answering and hanging
out here since we threw the doors open.

One of the basic underpinnings of this group is to define ourselves by
what we are, rather than what we are not. As an example, I don't think
 that
Rivendell has ever said they are anti-racing. Rather, they emphasize the
things they enjoy - riding bicycles where ever they can under any
conditions, camping under the stars, being comfortable - in short, just
enjoying the ride. That way, you don't have to have an argument about
racing vs. comfort. You can have a discussion about what is great about
 either.

And to say it very plainly, this list is about discussion.

I've mentioned before one of the ways I think about this list - as a
public house where ideas are easily shared between those who have arrived,
everyone is present because they want to be, and passing through the doors
means that baggage is left outside. It takes the agreement of all to
 make that work.
The wonderful thing is that by and large, that continues to be the
case. The quality of discussions remain high.

The slight downside is that because of the level of discourse, it
 periodically
gets distracted. That's a very natural condition - after all, when
you are with folks who have good ideas and thoughts, who manage to
state them clearly and in ways that are optimistic and
 well-thought-through,
you want to seek their opinions on other topics as well.

The caution flag I'd like to raise is that the very narrowness of this
list is what gives rise to that high quality. It's important to
remember that if you are tagging your post OT or Off Topic, then it
doesn't belong on this list. General questions are best posted to more
 general lists.

Just by staying on topic, we're going to generate a fair amount of
traffic. One of the hallmarks of this list has been a very high signal to
noise ratio. It's solid information from the people using and thinking
 about the items.

And we've gotten to know one another pretty well, generated real, live
get-togethers among the members. As the photos from recent regional
rides, there's a lot to cover just within the stated topic of this
group. All good stuff. No... GREAT stuff. Take a new friend riding
this month, and make sure they finish with a big smile.

 Tone is a critical issue.

My view is simple: life is too short. If you can't

[RBW] OT-Cool Lugged bike for 7 year old (has to be girly)

2013-04-15 Thread Peter M
My daughter has all of a sudden taken an interest in my bike collection and
keeps hollering at me to build her a cool bike. I have been looking
around CL and ebay but all I see is either old stuff that was crap when new
or new stuff that is just crap. Shame girls bikes get the short end of the
stick. To add to the challenge my daughter is a princess and wont be seen
on something not pink or purple and sparkly. So I could get something
intended for a boy and get re-spray but I know there are a good bit of
parents on here who might have a better idea. Cali said she wants a bike
like daddys, not like the ones she sees in walmart, made me smile.

My anniversary is coming up and I was given the go ahead to get more bike
bags as I am in need of a small trunk sack. They are out of stock on the
Riv site so thought I would see if any serial bag hoarders wanted to sell a
tweed trunksack small. Yes I know I owned one last year and sold it, but
such is life. I dont really care if its the old or new style, just as long
as it is in nice condition. Thanks all.

[RBW] Shellac Question

2013-02-10 Thread Peter M
Does it really go bad after a while? I am anxiously anticipating the
arrival of the Bombadil in a few days but realized my shellac is about
4-5 months old. I made it myself out of button lac, if that makes a
difference. I googled around the web and its all woodworking sites who
say its past it but this isnt my chiffarobe, its some twine. Hoping
someone with more experience will just chime in and let me know it
will still go off and dry. Otherwise I have to make and strain a new
batch which takes a few days. Thanks to anyone who has some learnin
here.

Now I am a natural skeptic, but I dont want to besmirch this seller
unjustly. One would think, however that the first ever production bike
from Rivendell would attract more attention. This fact at least
seems to be the justification for the what I would call really high
price for an almost 20 year old frame.

[RBW] Color Question from an Indecisive Person

So my Bombadil is taking a short trip over to the Color Factory in
Waretown. Even though thier prices seem scarily low Bruce was awesome
on the phone so I am gonna take the leap soon. The only issue is I
have never gotten a re-spray and I am having angina over which color
is most appropriate for the twin TT bomba. I wanted something
metallic, maybe a dark purple or a soft orange, as you can see I am
worlds apart even in my own mind. Anyone have any pics of thier
bombadil they can share so I can play off some ideas?

small scuff on seat tube decal and small mark where front deraileur
was, small scuff from some chain suck but no dents, dings or gouges.
Incredibly beautiful, needs a good home, priced to sell at $1,200
shipped but I am open to
offers. Email me with any questions. Link to Flikr page.

[RBW] 52cm Waterford Bombadil FFHS for Sale, single top tube--Must Sell! And other Stuff for Sale

2012-11-14 Thread Peter M
So fellow list member Michael was kind enough to let me buy his 56cm
Bombadil since I have finally come around on big Riv sizing. This
leaves my lovely Single Top Tube, Waterford built 52cm Bombadil
Frameset for sale, and I must sell it since I will have the 56 in my
possession soon. Bike has a custom paint job, Hunquapillar Grey with
cream accents, comes with dura-ace headset. Was bought new by fellow
list membe in 2011 so is really pretty new. Has small scuff on seat
tube decal and small mark where front deraileur was, small scuff from
some chain suck but no dents, dings or gouges. Incredibly beautiful,
needs a good home, priced to sell at $1,300 shipped but I am open to
offers. I also have some other random stuff for sale, 650b Synergy/LX
Rich built front wheel (I upgraded to dynamo setup) I kept this for a
while thinking I would use it for a build but now just has to go, less
than 100 miles, perfect condition. $100 shipped? if you buy it with
the bike i will knock off 10 bucks for shipping. MKS Grip King pedals,
bearing have been packed up with extra grease, $35 shipped. CR720
Brakes, whole setup, pads are used from another setup of mine but
still have good life, brakes used less than 100 miles, $30 shipped. I
have had this frameset for sale a few times at a slightly higer price
and had some interest but now need to actually sell so send me
reasonable offers and we will talk. Email me with any questions. Link

[RBW] ISO 58cm Homer Hilsen

2012-10-11 Thread Peter M
Heading says it all. I know I am an oft seller and buyer here but I
was looking to see if anyone has a used one for sale, paint condition
not important really. If not I will ride out the bombadil for the
rest of the winter and save my pennies for a new frame from Riv
directly. I am looking to stick with 650b and l want the dimensions
of the 58cm AHH so I am truely kicking myself that I sold a 58cm
Saluki last year before I bought into the Rivendell sizing. Alas I
throw out one last offer before I shut up with the buying and selling
and just post about my low carb diet actually working! (it has!).

nice condition Paul Touring Cantis-black. I am including two brand new

[RBW] Brooklyn Cruiser on Glee

2012-09-27 Thread Peter M
While I would love to give props to Grant on the Advisory Council for
Brooklyn Cruiser I just dont see him as a gleek. It was, however, a
happy respite from the usual nonsense on this show to see a Brooklyn
Cruiser-double top tube and all in the background shot of what is
laughably supposed to be a dive apartment in Brooklyn. I think the
other bike was a Schwinn Cream. this is your pop culture moment,
just slightly OT.

[RBW] Nitto R-10 vs Marks Rack for Saddlebag

2012-09-26 Thread Peter M
So I have been waxing and waning over whether to get the Bagman for my
Carradice Pendle. I just don think it is a good choice due to the
fact I want to just be able to mount it and not worry about it coming
loose and the fact that I dont want anything mounted to my saddle. I
was trying to decide now between the Nitto R-10 and the Marks Rack and
was wondering if anyone has used both or has first hand experience
with using either one with a sprung saddle and high profile brakes
(paul neo retro). Thanks to any advice yall can offer.

[RBW] Carradice Bagman Questions

2012-09-02 Thread Peter M
Hey all, love my carradice products but a combination of a sprung
saddle (B67) and setback seatpost makes it sit where the pockets can
have stuff jump out of them occasionaly. The bag is almost horizontal
instead of sitting straight up. I was wondering if anyone has used
the carradice bagman with a sprung saddle succesfully? I called
Wallbike and Peter White but both times got a vauge should work
which seemed to be a way to just say no. My seat is all the way back
so i should have enough rail space, is it just a question of rail
spacing? Also if it does work does anyone have a used bagman sport
they want to let go of on the cheap? Thanks all.

[RBW] 52cm Waterford Bombadil for sale-custom 1 top tube model

2012-08-30 Thread Peter M
Having put a few hundred more miles on the Bombadil I have decided it
is just an awesome bike but it is just a tad small for me. I think
until I wait for the HC bike I am going to pick up the 60cm Polyvalent
to move over my 650b stuff so the Bombadil is officially for sale but
for good reasons this time. Frameset is a 52cm Watefordwith 1 top
tube, made in 2011 custom with the one top tube for Jimmy(Hobie) who I
bought it off of. Custom Hunqpillar grey, paint looksamazing.. Comes
with Dura-Ace Headset that I recently repacked, has thousands of miles
left.. Bike itself has seen Light miles, bike needs a home where it
will get thrashed a bit, haha. Only scuffs I can see are a small one
on the decal and anotherat the derailuer clamp but that one will
obviously be covered up, nochainsuck or other nicks and scratches.
Looking to get close to what Ipaid for it-$1,400 with the Paul Touring
brakes included. I will pay for shipping. Here is a link to myFlikr
page with some pics of it buit up. If you want more just let me know.
Thanks all.

[RBW] ISO 59cm Bleriot FFHS

2012-08-29 Thread Peter M
So my wife who is tall (and pretty) wants a pretty bike and says the
MB2 is too mannish to be cruising around the hip(?) streets of
Brooklyn. She of course likes 650b since it is suddenly cool so I
tried to sell her on a Sam but she liked the looks of the Bleriot so
thought I would cast a net out there to see if anyone has a Frame/Fork/
Headset they wanted to part with. I will be doing the build since she
likes IGH hubs for around town riding. Any condition really is fine as
long as there are no dents/accident damage. I can do re-sprays in my
yard with some yummy toxic paint if needs be. I know this is a long
shot but if you never ask you never know. Thanks all.

[RBW] Thoughts on Velo Orange Polyvalent MKII

2012-08-21 Thread Peter M
So I have been riding the bombadil more this week and it is an awesome
ride but it still just feels a bit tight on the top tube. I have short
legs and a long torso so it is hard for me to find a bike with good
lenght on the top tube without having zero standover. I was looking
at the VO site though and I never even thought to look at their bikes
since I usually just get parts from them. The Polyvalent MKII looks
like the business with a nice long top tube and reasonable standover,
bosses for lights, short horizontal drops, and a nice fork rake. I do
hate that it is not lugged, which I dont know if I can get over or
not. I would really love to go up to the 56cm Bombadil but since they
are as rare as hens teeth it looks like I will have to shell out the
3k to get one which would be a year of saving at least. In the mean
time the Polyvalent looks like a reasonable alternative as a stop gap.
I was just wondering if anyone has owned or knows someone who has
owned a Polyvalent who would know if it is a nice Rivish ride for a
bigger (see fatter) guy. Thanks All.

[RBW] Mini ride report

2012-08-20 Thread Peter M
Ok, so finally got out for a ride last night and towards the end some
guys came by on thier color matched fixies and commented that my bike
was lit up like a xmas tree which did make me laugh since they were
the ones riding around at 11pm with no lights and no reflectors, so
who should be laughing at who? It made me think though since I do just
have the two lights, Minewt 250 in the front and SOMA bullet in the
back which is not excessive really. Then I remembered I had a little
Grant moment with the old 3M tape and had stuck it everywhere, my
helmet, pedals, on my lights, cranks, you name it. So Huzzah for Grant
because the tape definitely had its intended effect of being noticed,
albeit by a bunch of morons, haha.

[RBW] 52cm Waterford Bombadil for sale-custom 1 top tube model

2012-08-14 Thread Peter M
So it has come to this. My wife has worn me down and has a last in
first out policy so the Bombadil I acquired a few months ago has to
find a new home. Truth be told it does not get enough riding to
justify such a beautiful bike and it is time to get my daughter a
bedroom set and pay school tuition again. Frameset is a 52cm Wateford
with 1 top tube, made in 2011 custom with the one top tube for Jimmy
(Hobie) who I bought it off of. Custom Hunqpillar grey, paint looks
amazing.. Comes with Dura-Ace Headset with thousands of miles on it.

[RBW] ISO-56cm Sam Hillborne

2012-08-13 Thread Peter M
I know, another annoying ISO post but I have a few friends who are not
entirely computer literate and this is a posting for one of them.
Looking for Taiwan 56cm Sam frameset, paint color, paint condition and
number of top tubes not important. Since I do the bike building I will
be buying this on thier behalf. Canti-Sam is great but again as long
as it is not dented/damaged in any way we will be happy. Thanks yall.

[RBW] 52cm Bombadil Trade

2012-08-10 Thread Peter M
So some offers here but nothing concrete. Again a Waterford bulit 52cm
Bombadil with custom Hunaqpillaresque (ha!) paint. I am looking for a
59cm Bleriot or 52cm Sam Hillborne, maybe a rough 58cm AHH 650b? to
trade plus cash. If no trades come up I might have to wind up selling
it or taking on OT at work to keep my wife off my back, argh! Thanks
All.

[RBW] Who wants to trade for a (Newish) Bombadil?

2012-08-03 Thread Peter M
So my plans to move upstate have fizzled and I am stuck in brooklyn
for yet another year with a too small apartment and too many bikes. I
have a new (2011) Beautiful single top tube Waterford built 52cm
Bombadil that doesnt get ridden enough for my wife to stop houding me
about it. So was wondering if anyone had an older 52cm (Taiwan?) Sam
or appropriate sized Bleriot or another 650b Rivendell frame for
someone with an 85pbh they wanted to trade plus cash to quiet down my
wife's rumblings for a while. Looking for something with no dents but
paint issure are irrelevant, or maybe preferred so I can bring myself
to lock it up outside of places. I know this is a longshot but thought
that maybe someone who was looking for an upgrade without spending the
extra on a whole new bike might be out there. Here is a link to some
pics in the old backyard. Thanks everyone.

[RBW] Platrack/Slickersack and Mini Front Rack for Sale

2012-07-30 Thread Peter M
Ok, again dont wanna start some front load bias thing here but weight
up front just did not agree with me. For sale is my whole Platrack
setup, prices are shipping included, paypal please.

Slickersack-in like-brand new condition, taken for 3- 5 mile rides in
dry conditions to see if it worked for me. All bolts/spacers included
to mount it up. Includes jazzy Dora the explorer felt liner but I can
rip it out, its just tacked in the corners with some dots of glue, but
did quiet down the rattling on the coroplast liner. Not pictured is
the shoulder strap but that is included too. $100 Shipped.

Platrack-new condition but had to trim the stays a cm or two to fit
650b fork. Will fit any 650b or 26 bike but will need new stays for
700c forks I would think. $90 shipped

Nitto Mini-front rack, again used for 15 miles, in like new condition.
I have a set of rubber clamps I will include that are not pictured.
$85 Shipped.

Here is a link to my Flikr page with stuff for sale, let me know
offline if you have any questions. Thanks.

[RBW] Question about Riv Custom on Ebay

2012-07-10 Thread Peter M
So a friend of mine (seriously, not me!) wants to know if this custom
on ebay will take a 650b/hetre conversion. I am not too familiar with
these older Rivs so thought I would ask if anyone here has done this
kind of thing. I would think the Dia-compe Mod 750s would get you the
reach but again, will the bb drop be too much and will it even fit the
Hetres or is this guy dreaming? He really wants a 650b/Hetre bike but
wants something more roady than the AHH/SH since he is only 135lbs.
Just spitballing here, thanks all. Link to bike on the Bay

[RBW] 56cm AHH FFHS Still For Sale

2012-06-12 Thread Peter M
Ok, one last shot before it goes to fleabay, which I hate to do really
but I have to pay over 2k for my daughter's summer camp so will be
looking to sell this and a myriad of new stuff I have laying around
too. My 56cm 650b AHH Frame, Fork, Headset and Brakes is up for sale,
color is School Bus Yellow but it looks more to me like Creamsicle
Orange. Frame obviously has room for Hetres and 52mm VO Zeppelins
Serial number for those that keept track of those things is SA 226. It
has all the rack fittings of the new Hilsens on the midfork and mid
seat stay, one eyelet on the front fork, two on the back dropout. Has
a kickstandplate, and cast in ridges on bottom bracket. A really top
shelf example of a bike that is used but not abused or ridden hard. No
damage, usual paint loss on eyelets, small scuff on seattube decal,
overall in excellent shape, just begging to be ridden way more than I
have been. Will include dia compe centerpulls and kookstop pads if
buyer wants them. Bike really is beautiful and I have already gotten
compliments on the few rides I have squeezed in. Looking for $1050
shipped to lower 48, paypal only. Link to Flikr page, I can take more
pics if buyer wants. http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/

[RBW] New (to me) Berthoud Rack

This is a new one to me, looks like alot of stress on the seatpost to me if
bag was really loaded but maybe I am wrong. I am sure this is not new but
just the first time I have seen this type of setup.

[RBW] 56cm AHH/Hiluki still for sale

2012-06-05 Thread Peter M
So a few lookers but nothing concrete, my 56cm AHH is still for sale
here. It is technically a Hiluki, Serial number SA 226. It has all the
rack fittings of the new Hilsens on the midfork and mid seat stay, one
eyelet on the front fork, two on the back dropout. Has a kickstand
plate, and cast in ridges on bottom bracket. A really top shelf
example of a bike that is used but not abused or ridden hard. Again
color is School bus Yellow but looks more like creamsicle to me. Will
include dia compe centerpulls and kookstop pads. Bike has no damage,
dents dings etc. I paid $1100 shipped two months ago and haven't added
any damage or real use and even framesavered the frame and repacked
the headset so really don't want to take a big loss here. Looking for

[RBW] 56cm Homer Hilsen for Sale-Orange

2012-05-31 Thread Peter M
Ok, here we go again. I recently worked out a deal to pick up an
Atlantis so per my wonderful wife the Homer has to go. I recently
picked it up from Chris Jonhson and it is in great condtion. Color is
techincally school bus yellow but it is more like creamsicle orange in
real life. Looking to sell Frame, Fork and Headset for what I paid,
$1100 shipped. No dents, dings or chainsuck, has VO leather chainstay
protector I just installed but can be removed easily enough with a
hair dryer. Bike has one small scuff in seat tube decal but it doesnt
show up in pictures and is very small but thought I should mention it,
the rest of the paint is outstanding. I will include the dia-compe
center pull brakes but I am keeping the kool stop pads for myself
since they are pretty much brand new. I am also looking to sell the
wheelset here. 650b Wheels, front is a Rich built synergy with deore
hub, rear is Alfine 8 Speed internal with synergy wheel, handbuilt for
me at Harris Cyclery. I paid over $800 with the hetres for this setup
so was looking to get around $450. Wheels have less than 300 miles on
them, hub shifts super smooth, no grinding or anything like that, will
include brand new shifter/small parts setup and 57mm VO fenders to
buyer. Here are some recent pics of the bike, email me with any
questions/concerns. Thanks everyone.

[RBW] ISO 58 or 61 Atlantis

2012-05-27 Thread Peter M
So not sure if my deal to pick up a 56cm Bombadil is gonna happen so
throwing out the line to see if anyone wants to move a 58 or 61
Atlantis since it seems they are a bit more available than the Bomba.
Condition not terribly important as long as no dents or dings, also
open to trades for my 650b 56cm Hilsen. Of course if anyone else has a
56cm Bomba they want to sell I would be open for that too so I could
reuse my 650b wheels. For everyones sake this will be the last time I
do a post like this for a while before I bite the bullet and buy a new
one. Thanks everyone.

[RBW] Just got back from a 10 mile ride...

2012-05-19 Thread Peter M
And boy are my arms tired. Out for a late night ride so rode over to
the shore path but by the time I got back my arms were killing me. I
have been juggling a few different bikes lately but my latest setup is
a 56cm Homer (650b-Hetres) with a 10cm technomic and Albatross bars,
about 1 inch above the saddle. I rode MTBs for most of my youth then
fixies for a while with bullhorn bars so not sure if it is an issue of
the bars being too close or not. I finally did a proper measurement
and have a 85pbh and am 5'11 with a longish torso. I was looking at
a Bombadil so I could stay with 650b and to possibly to try and strech
me out a bit but was thinking that the 52 would be basically the same
as what I have now but the 56 might be a bit tight with standover. Was
told by Rivendell that I could go either way but I ride in NYC so I
do need to straddle the top tube every now and then at the longer
traffic lights. I cant see doing any actual MTBing outside of fire
trails so not so concerned about bail outs over the top tube. I am
throwing myself to the knowledge of the group here yet again to see if
anyone has some wise words. Thank you all.

[RBW] RBT on the Bay

2012-05-16 Thread Peter M
So just saw this RBT on the Bay in what would be my size for that
frame. Paint looks really amatuer unfortunately, wondering if that is
32c tires with fenders or without, anyway to squeeze 35s in there with
no fenders?

Thanks to anyone who has owned one and can offer words of wisdom

[RBW] ISO 52cm Bomadil

2012-05-14 Thread Peter M
Ok, I thought I would go out on a limb here and make a dedicated
posting to see if anyone has a 52cm Bombadil they were thinking of
selling. I know this is a long shot but cant justify getting one at
full price at least until late June when the camping adventures begin
with my daughter and thought I would throw out a line seeing if anyone
had one they were looking to sell. I know I have been told it is a
real long shot so not expecting any miracles here, haha. I was
looking for the old parallel tt style model but I am open to other
options. Thanks and safe riding.

[RBW] Marks Rack Rear Mounted Question

2012-04-30 Thread Peter M
Question on mounting new Marks Rack in the rear. I see some pics have
the diving board and the two sets of struts mounted while some just
have the support struts and no diving board when mounting in the rear.
I am just putting on a small trunksack so it doesnt need to be super
strong since I have the platrack setup on the front and all for
lugging. I would mount the platrack in the rear but with the trail a
bike I wouldnt be able to use it when I lug my kid around too. Thanks
for any and all advice.

[RBW] Questions on Carradice Barley

2012-04-17 Thread Peter M
Thinking of getting a Carradice Barley saddlebag but wanted to ask if
anyone here is running one currently and how they like it. Also do you
need a bag support with this thing like the now discontinued Hupe, and
will it work with a sprung Brooks like the B72? Thanks to any help
anyone can offer.

[RBW] Platrack Slickersack Marks Rack Combo for sale

2012-04-17 Thread Peter M
Ok, trying yet another setup on my bike and wanted to see if there was
any interest in my old yet only used 2 times setup. I want to sell the
Marks rack, slickersack and platrack as a group. Slickersack is in
brand new condition, only used twice, Marks rack and platrack nuts
have some marks on them from install but nothing structural, I am just
a bit of a perfectionist so thought it was worth a mention. This was
on my 650b Hilsen so I assume it would fit any 650b bike as it is cut
now. I am not smart enough to tell if it would fit a 700c or 26 fork
as it is configured but I imagine it would fit a 26 or 650B for
sure. I will include a Elite Ciussi gel bottle holder in yellow if
buyer wants it, it was shipped to me on accident in yellow so they
sent a replacement and told me to keep this one but I think I will
keep the Johns Irish strap. I will include all the hardware the Marks
Rack came with but no guarantee I have every last strap and screw
since I I will be digging them out of my bike box but should have just
about everything. I for sure have everything to hook it up to a bike
with eyelets like the Hilsen, Bomba, Atlantis, etc since it just came
off of my Hilsen. Looking for $250 for the whole setup but open to
reasonable offers. CONUS, paypal only please. Link to Flikr page with
pics

, email me if you need pics of anything in particular. Thanks.

[RBW] Feeler Sale of my Hillborne

2012-04-06 Thread Peter M
Not sure if I am gonna sell this or not but wanted to put out a feeler
to see if anyone is interested. As mentioned earlier I am not getting
any lighter and wanted to haul myself and some stuff around this
summer so was looking to get a bike that is a bit more stout. Mine is
a 54cm Hillborne with custom paint, kinda like a silver green
metallic. Frameset w/headset for sale only but will include 113mm BB
if someone wants it. Frame has only one small paint chip, I have
twined and wrapped chainstay and made sure to use electrical tape
behind it, it comes off easily enough if you dont like it. As
mentioned earlier this is actually one of the Hiluki's out there with
a serial No. SA 0193. Pictures show you can run Hetres and fenders
on this no problem. I really would hate to lose it but after paying
off tax man my wife will not let me get a new bike until I sell one.
I paid $1250 shipped but could let it go for $1150 shipped if that
seems failr. If anyone has any questions let me know. Thanks for
bearing with my complete indicisiveness. Link to Flikr page with
pics. http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/sets/72157629272888155/

[RBW] Anyone want to trade Atlantis for Hilsen?

2012-04-01 Thread Peter M
Ok, I know I am beating a dead horse here but just wanted to see if
anyone has a 56cm Atlantis frameset they would like to trade for my
54cm Hilsen frameset. I am not losing any weight and at 250 dont have
much room for additional baggage when you factor in my big ass. Hilsen
has custom paint and no damage so looking for a Atlantis of equivalent
quality. My Hilsen is acually Saluki 0193 according to the bottom
bracket stamp in so much as it has a bit more clearance for Hetres and
fenders than some other smaller Hilsens I have seen. Not gonna do a
whole diatribe here but if anyone out there is looking for a go
fastish bike or a bike that I have gotten so many compliments on I am
debating why I am offering to trade it let me know. Oh, link to my
Flikr page, http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/

[RBW] That Ebay Thing

2012-03-23 Thread Peter M
Not riding related but def rivendell related. I usually troll
craigslist, ebay, etc. for any deals out there and have noticed a
trend that while the bikes on ebay seem to be reasonable the
accessories usually go for far more than I would expect to pay. Take
for example this hat for sale
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rivendell-Bicycle-Works-Cycling-Cap-brand-new-/260983293520?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0hash=item3cc3d10650
it is currently selling $27 with shipping, you can get the same hat
for $16.00 on the rivbike site. Even if that is the only thing you get
and you pay the shipping its only $24.00, a 3 dollar savings and the
ebay auction isnt even over yet. I doubt rivendell has any problem
moving bikes because they are amazing and known nationwide for thier
bikes but having worked in retail the smalls as we knew them can
also generate a huge amount of revenue and let some people who cant
afford the bikes at least get some rivendellian swag. I have rarely if
ever seen an ad for Rivendell accessories and clothing and I am not
sure if this is on purpose or due to lack of funds for advertising but
it seems like when I see the stuff on ebay and CL it goes for more
than new which means people greatly desire it so one has to wonder if
it was better advertised could it generate more revenue for rivendell
in general. Sorry for the rambloings, just thinking out loud here.

[RBW] Curiosity is Killing Me

2012-03-21 Thread Peter M
So the new Sam has me wondering, is my bike just too small? I had a
long convo with Keven on the clock at work today which was doubly nice
and he was trying to bang into my head that my 54 Hilsen is just too
small for someone with a 84pbh and who comes in at 250lbs. Having had
a 58cm Saluki that just felt too big I thought maybe he was off or
that I just feel more comfortable on a smaller frame but notice that I
am trying to stretch the frame with a long stem and setback seatpost
so maybe he is on to something. I hate to be that guy that jumps from
bike to bike but I would love to find one that was just right and I
am not sure I am there yet. I love the 650b wheels with the Hetres
and would hate to lose that by going up to the 56 Sam or 58 Atlantis
or 54 Hunqapillar, although those are all awesome bikes. My question
is if I was to shift my Hilsen frame for the 52 Sam is this just a
lateral move or would there be a significant difference that I would
feel? If anyone has a 56 Hilsen for a straight trade or has any other
creative ideas I would be open to hear them. I really do love the
unique color of the Hilsen I got from Joe and that it is actually one
of the older Salukis (SA 0193) that was badged a Hilsen which also
makes it somewhat unique so I would hate to give it up for something
that was just a lateral move. Thanks to anyone who can help me with my
ramblings here. Oh, link to my latest ride photos

[RBW] So jinx has me wondering--Homer Hilsen for Bombadil?

2012-03-13 Thread Peter M
Could not believe how succesful Jinx was at doing his swap so I was
wondering if anyone out there with a 52cm Bombadil would ever consider
a swap for a 54 Hilsen. They have about the same standover but the
Hilsen has a shorter top tube but the real issue is my wife is stating
that my Rivendell must become a bike built for two with my daughter
sharing the bike since it was so expensive. With me being about 240
and my daughter at 35lbs I feel we are going to max out the weight on
the Hilsen pretty fast and was looking to haul picnics and other stuff
with us. I was thinking the Bombadil would be a good fit to bring over
my 650b stuff without spending too much extra. I was looking for one
of the older Bomba's, not too much of a fan of the new style of
diagatube. I really love the color of my hilsen and I am sure Joe will
balk at me since I just picked this up from him a couple of months ago
but just throwing out a feeler here, anyone with any interesting
offers I am always open to talk. Here is a link to my pics

modern wheels. Dropouts were re-aligned with the appropriate park
tool.  Bike will take 38mm ties with no fenders and 28s with 43mm
honjos. Will include the honjos and the long reach gran compe brakes
in the sale. Bike was setup for 700c with those brakes and worked
great. Repaint was $250 and that is what I am looking to sell for
since I know that I will never get back what I put into it. Bike rides
really nice but max weight on it should be no more than about 200lbs

crankset (52 45 rings) along with the campagnolo pedals that came
with bicycle before I restored it that I can include at a negotiable
price. All have been cleaned, pedals and headset repacked with fresh
park grease. Can also sell those seperaratly if the buyer of the frame
doesnt want them. Again looking for $250 plus 50 for shipping, if your
cost is less I will refund but I will eat anything over 50, you can
also come pick it up locally.  Also have brooks grips for sale, honey,
removed 2 rings to make them a bit smaller, already treated with
proofide. These will NOT take bar ends, something I wish I knew when I
bought them, haha, was thinking 40 bucks shipped. Link to flikr page

[RBW] 58cm Saluki for Sale, needs good home, just too big for me.

2012-01-17 Thread Peter M
Had this up for trade but now have a tentative deal worked out to get
a smaller AHH so this beauty needs to go. Again it is a 58cm Saluki in
Pea Sage Green. Has one tiny ding in downtube and some paint loss
behind BB but I touched it up pretty well. Sale includes frame fork
and headset. The BB is brand new but it is 113 since I run IGH hubs,
if you want it though I will include it for nothing. Besides for the
minor techincal issues bike is in great shape with really no other
scrapes or paint loss to speak of, never crashed or dropped. Chainstay
has a cool shellaced twine finish with tape under it to keep it water
proof but if you dont want it I can get rid of it no problem, paint
under it is perfect. One of the last of the Toyo built Salukis, it
really is a beautiful bike but just too big for me. Here is the link
to flikr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/ if you need
more pics just let me know. I also have a campy NR strada crankset and
bb if the seller wants to have a more vintage flair i can include at a
very low price. Paid $1,200 shipped a few months ago looking to get
$1000 shipped this time around because I am being honest with the
small cosmetic details. Thanks for looking.

[RBW] Anyone looking to trade a 56cm Hillborne or Saluki for a 58cm Saluki

2012-01-08 Thread Peter M
After a few hundred miles I have determined that my saluki is just a hair
too big. I have a freakish body at 5'11 with a 82cm PBH, and yes I have
measured it 10 times. I wear 31 inseam pants. The 58cm saluki just gives
me no standover room whatsoever even though it is really comfortable I am
looking to do a bit more on and off road adventures and need some kind of
buffer for the old crotchal area. Bike is in nice shape but unlike the guy
that sold it to me I will give full disclosure, it has a small ding in the
downtube and some paint loss behind the bb lug that i touched up as well as
i could, with the crankset on you cant see it and the ding is pretty much
invisible but if you feel the tube it is there. Again looking for a 56cm
Hilsen or Saluki, if they are in better shape than mine i can give you
money to compensate for the difference. If someone has a frame to sell
rather than to trade i would be open for that as well. Here is a link to my
flikr page when I first buit up the bike.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/
Shoot me any offers or anything, I am pretty flexible. Thanks.

[RBW] Re: A well traveled topic: 650b or 700c Hilsen?

2011-11-25 Thread Peter M
Well just my two cents with the center pull saluki but I can run big
26 tires in the rough stuff by moving the brake pads diam compes down
to the end of the slot, looks a bit funny since I have a 58cm but
since the tires are so huge it compensates. I can also run 700c 28s
too but it takes a quick brake change to the mid reach grand compe
brakes but it only takes about 25 minutes. Since the 650b Hilsen and
Saluki are basically the same I would say the 650 Hilsen is a
versatile beast.

[RBW] Ride Report On New Saluki

2011-11-15 Thread Peter M
Reading about Seattle in November inspired me to upload pics of my
first 50 miles on the Saluki at the Brooklyn Waterfront under the
Verrazzano Bridge. I mean 60 Degrees in NY in November is just
amazing. Got two compliments from some gents in thier 70s on bikes
that looked like they got them when they were in high school, but hey
it was inspiring to think I could still be riding 40 years from now on
the Saluki! Link to some pics I snapped when I stopped for a mentos
break. http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/?saved=1 Bike rides
just amazing and is so comfortable compared to anything else I have
owned. Seriously thinking about selling my MB2 to put a down payment
on an Atlantis so I can have something to go offroad upstate... but
have to wait until the spring or my wife would seriously kill me in my
sleep, hahaha!

[RBW] First Ride on New Saluki

2011-11-11 Thread Peter M
So went out for the first ride on the new saluki in rapidly
approaching winter NY. This being my first ride in almost 5 months due
to health issues(long story short I had dizziness and veritigo, turned
out to be migraines, not MS or a Brain Tumor, thank god) I did about
10 miles and it felt awesome. Now when I stopped riding I was 225 and
tipped the scales at 250 today so there was some spring in the ride
going over some big bumps but boy was it smooth and fast. My first
time using bar end shifters was really positive, i had so many places
to put my hands thanks to the smooth VO Elk Hide bar wrap that got
alot of looks. You know I used to ride a neon yellow olmo and got
compliments but today I actually got deference, like people thought
twice before trying to run me over, which in Brooklyn is really all
you can hope for. Here is a link
http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/?saved=1
to the pics, yes I know the handlebars are high, I am still trying to
get everything dialed in, front end was a little loose feeling, not
sure if it was because I had so much extension on the bars or I need
to tighten the headset a little. Anyway I have been a lurker here for
a while but since my wife and family could care less about bikes
thought I would post somewhere where people do. So i guess now it is
time to start saving for that Atlantis, I mean everyone needs two Rivs
right?

[RBW] Re: Have you polished scratched Nitto?

2011-11-10 Thread Peter M
I have done this in the past, use a gray scrubby pad by 3M then 3M
metal and chrome polish. Just keep polishing back and forth using them
both until the scratches disappear, works great. And no I dont work
for 3M but have done painting and polishing for years and they make
great stuff.

[RBW] Dent in Seat Stay of Saluki

2011-11-08 Thread Peter M
So I recently acquired a used 58cm Saluki off the List here. I thought
that it would be a good choice because I love the classic look of the
Homer but at $1200 shipped I would be able to save almost 1k. Seller
insisted bike was perfect but when it came it had a ding in the
downtube and a small dent in the chainstay by the BB shell where it
looks like a chain dropped and got caught up in the crankset. Now the
ding in the downtube doesnt bother me because it is really small and
barelly visible but I know the BB is under alot of flex and just hope
that it is gonna be ok to ride this thing long term. I really just
need to be talked down before I flip the frame for 1k and lose 200 or
ship it back to Cali and have the tube replaced and bike repainted and
spend over 500 bucks. Here is a link for the pics I took of the
damage, just looking for opinions here.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/67889635@N06/?saved=1

Just really disappointed that i thought i was getting something I
could ride for a long time and now feeling doubtful about its long-
term viablilty. Any opinions and thoughts would be welcome.

[RBW] Re: So Torn, Cannot Decide

2011-10-06 Thread Peter M
Oh I have called Riv a few times just to pester them with a million
questions and never had anyone ask me to buy something or made me feel
like I was wasting thier time. They are all really awesome guys. The
issue is that in the NYC area it is hard to find anyone who owns a
Rivendell to give it a test ride let alone a dealer to get to up close
and personal. I know Harris has some models but again that is a bit of
a Trek (4 hours in the car) for me from Brooklyn and since I have been
blissfully car free since 2004 I would have to bum a ride from
somebody which I hate having to do. I just would hate buying something
and then deciding its just not for me but realize I have to pull the
trigger on something. I wish someone had a 52cm Sam for sale so I
could see if it was indeed too small, at 84ish PBH I fall right in
that middle ground of alot of riv bikes but have never had the chance
to actually ride one to see on what side of the divide I fall. I might
just wind up buying the 56cm Sam to see how it fits since it is the
cheapest option and sell it this summer to pick up the Atlantis.
Losing a couple hundred on the Sam will hurt less than losing over 500
on the Atlantis if I decide to sell. Again if anyone has a 52cm Sam to
sell I would pick that up too, doesnt matter what color/brakes/etc.

[RBW] Re: So Torn, Cannot Decide

2011-10-05 Thread Peter M
All great advice guys, I was leaning towards the Hunq for a while
because it doese look beautiful but from the pics the headtube looks
really small on the 54 (the one I would fit on) so I was worried it
would be flexy in the cockpit area if I had too much stem exposed,
even if it is a nitto stem and all. I think the smallest tires I would
ride would be 38s for around town and when going offroad upstate NY
probably 50s. I know either bike would suit me but it seems like for
someone with a PBH of 84ish like me the Hunq would allow me to run the
biggest tires available and still have some standover room, if I am
reading the geometry chart correctly that is. I can get used to cantis
but it will be some adjustment as I am coming from riding European 531
frames. My MB2 is actually my wife's new whip since she is 5'10and
loves my IGH in the rear, triple up front set up so I havent gotten
alot of practice with the cantis. Anyone with the Hunq who likes to
sit upright have advice on how much stem I will need to have to get it
to fit right, assuming 72cm saddle height? (sorry if I double posted
this, still getting used to how the new groups features work)

Peter, Getting a wider tired bike is never overkill!  Like others have

bars than the Atlantis, and the extra tube does add stiffness to the front
end which adds to the stability. This is an overlooked and subtle thing, but
it is noticeable to me in a 60cm. Bombadil vs. my custom 62cm.Reynolds 531ST
 frame.

If color is consideration, you can always get the Hunq frame painted any
color you wish. I asked Keven how much for a single color repaint, no fancy
pin stripes, just a basic color, he told be about $100 from their painter.
That is more than reasonable :)

[RBW] So Torn, Cannot Decide

2011-10-04 Thread Peter M
So finally have the funds and approval from the wife to go ahead and
buy a new riv frameset only really cannot decide which one. I was
leaning towards the Hillborne but now looking at the Atlantis I really
like the finish and the fact I could go to huge tires if I wanted to
one day. I currently live in NYC but am moving back upstate soon so
need something I can take on gravel roads and not wipe out. IThe
question is, is the Atlantis overkill? I know it is twice the price
but that is not really a concern (well it is but I am willing to spend
the extra if it means having the best bike out there). I was also
looking at the Hunqapillar but it seems to be more of MTB with a short
headtube and I really want to get the bars nice and high for my
Albatross bars. Also can someone who owns a 58cm Atlantis let me know
how it fits? I am 5'11 with a PBH of 85.5, most definitely not a
racer at 250lbs. The geometry at Riv is currently down so not sure how
the 58 would fit but would really like to stick with 700c wheels since
I already have an MB-2 with 26ers. Thanks for any words of wisdom out
there on the group.

[RBW] New Website Mixup

2011-09-30 Thread Peter M
Looking at the Hillborne page on the new website and am I wrong or
shouldnt it read that single tube one are made by wateford and the
doubles are made it Taiwan or has there been a switcheroo at Riv? The
pictures indicate that the smaller ones are canti syle and the doubles
are side pull but again the site says the opposite. Any insights?

[RBW] Fitting on the Sam Hillborne

2011-09-23 Thread Peter M
Need someone who owns a HIllborne who can tell me what the real
standover is on the 56cm. Called Riv and was told that it would be a
bit too big for someone with a 84cm pbh but have heard from other
people that it should be fine with just a few cm clearance. I ride a
58cm raleigh international right now but wanted to move up to
something more sturdy for a bigger guy. I was also thinking of the San
Marcos in 54cm but not sure if that can support 240lbs of my fat ass.
Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
