2023-02-28 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Russell, You are correct. I had a brain fart on the location of Tom
Oswald's businesses (bicycle shop and frame building). And that's despite
the fact my wife and I visited from Virginia over a decade ago to ride the
nearby Pine Creek Trail across the state line in NY.
Tom is a very nice fellow. And yes, he has honed his craft well since
learning it from Dale Brown (of Cycles de Oro in N.C.) when he worked at
Cycles de Oro. My feeling is that custom steel bicycles remain a bargain,
given the amount of time lavished on each. (That would apply to a custom
Riv too of course.)
Good luck on you repair search. (If you are near Boston, isn't that still a
hot bed of frame building?)

Paul, I know very little about "old" bikes, and I've never known about
Austro Daimler bikes. Yours looks like a very meticulous made beautiful
frame. Is it made of stainless?
Also, your friend's Homer looks very cool & clean.

Dave, love that mirror-like pond; it's as if you see sky both over your
head and underneath you.

Luke, that looks like an "easier" ride compared to photos in your previous
posts. SF area seems to be a great place with various terrains.

Stephanie, Grant would no doubt approve your use of the bike. Those blue
Sackvilles make mere grocery rides joyous, don't they?

Russel, I agree with Rich that your bike looks great. Now I'm thinking
about which of my bike I should use green bartapes and yellow cables...

Eric, so there are two airfields nearby? I seldom have chance to look at
airplanes up close, that must be fun.

Out ‘n about here with no snow to speak of in the Connecticut River
Valley of western Massachusetts, where it was 57 degrees on Monday, George

I'm going to have to call that a spring ride photo, not winter. I don't

Re: [RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-02-08 Thread Takashi
Ted,
The place I took the photo is about 5-minute ride from my room.
Snow is mostly disappeared now.
Snow bank indeed makes road narrower, but I ride mostly on non-busy back
roads, so no problem.

Slin, I'm pretty sure that your wife will love that beautiful Platypus!

Eric Marth,
Good ride with friends AND seeing an owl very close. What's not to like??
And photos in your latter post are also beautiful. It doesn't look like
winter except for the 3rd photos with ice in it.

Eric Norris,
I second Paul's comment that your photos make me feel like I'm there. It's
always very interesting to see historical buildings during a ride.

Paul, thanks for photo of Eric's Hillborne. That's indeed a gigantic bag!

Stephen, film photos have different atmosphere from digital ones, and yours
are so great!
I also live in a tiny apartment room with 2 bikes in it. I'm interested in
A Homer Hilsen but no more room.

Ryan, riding in strong wind (headwind or tailwind) must have been very cold.
But looking at that blue sky, I also would have hopped on my bike.

Richard, that bike looks like a perfect choice for having fun on snow!

Dave, great photos as always! Monochrome image highlights interesting
patterns of tree shadows.

Will, although there are no snow in the photo, it surely looks like a very
cold day!

2023-02-01 Thread Richard Rose
Hello Kim. Too soon to tell. I have yet to complete the build. I am waiting on cables. It is complete enough for me to pedal (slowly!) around the driveway & down the street to check fit & get a feel for it. I think I am very close - it feels very familiar. I am trying to duplicate my position / touch points from the Clem. It’s a bit tricky going back & forth between bikes with measurements. The Gus sits higher off the ground - higher bottom bracket & bigger wheels. Same saddle on both bikes, B17. Bosco bars on both, 550 steel on the Clem, 580 aluminum on the Gus. Saddle position nearly identical on both bikes. Gus is longer so I have a shorter stem (parts bin) on it - 80mm vs. 135mm on the Clem. I think I need a 100mm for the Gus as the reach to the tips is about 2.5cm shorter on the Gus. All that said, it feels fantastic. I am very optimistic that it will be a blast to ride on the MTB trails I frequent. When mounting the Gus I do miss the true step through Clem. I need to work on my hip flexibility! But the Gus feels a bit stiffer which I think is a good thing for singletrack.Sent from my iPhoneOn Feb 1, 2023, at 10:25 AM, Kim Hetzel wrote:Hi Richard, How does your new Gus feel and handle ?Kim HetzelYelm, WA.On Wed, Feb 1, 2023 at 6:22 AM Richard Rose wrote:Been meaning to post a few pics.Sent from my iPhoneOn Jan 30, 2023, at 4:34 PM, Slin wrote:Takashi - Thanks, I just built up the Platypus for my wife. 2023-01-10 Thread Takashi
Thank you Garth.
Yes, it was indeed "Midnight Sun." When I looked up and stared at the moon
it was almost blinding.

Dorothy, riding in winter rain is much tougher than in snow IMHO.
And your Clem looks like the embodiment of what Grant was thinking when he
designed them.

Jamin, they're beautiful photos!
Those steep mountains look very much like what we have here in Japan. Looks
like quite a workout if you want to enjoy the view.

Ted, I'm sorry to hear that. And that's definitely a Winter Ride Foto!

Piaw, I was able to see photos without an Amazon account. That collapsed
car!
I agree that riding a closed road is pleasant.

2023-01-08 Thread Piaw Na
Get well! I've been riding, getting stuff in between the bouts of rain here
in the Bay Area. We did a ride today, but I wasn't on my Roadini, since
with all the mud off pavement I wasn't going to try riding off pavement
today. With trees and power lines down here and there, there are lots of
road closures, but of course whenever I see one of those road closures, I
always take the road because that means there are no cars. Today's ride
went through a road that was closed because of a downed tree. Big problem
for cars, no problems for
cyclists:

(sorry, you'll have to login or create an account with amazon to see the
photos). Strava link: https://www.strava.com/activities/8361168853

With all the rain that's been forecast it doesn't look like I'll be riding
off pavement until at least February.

[RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-01-08 Thread Takashi
Leah,
Thank you for the video, your Platypus with lots of lights is so fabulous!
It sure looks like Michigan is a tough place to ride bikes when there is
heavy snowfall.
As someone commented cross country skiing might be fun.
Here's a photo from last year:
https://flic.kr/p/2mZYVer

Paul,
Thank you. It's natural that higher, mountainous places get more snowfall.
West Virginia has more mountains? Now I understand why John Denver sang
"West Virginia, Mountain Mama..."

Dave,
I agree with Eric, your photos are great!
" Sorry for the number of photo"
No, not at all. The more photos the better.
I scrolled through your Instagram posts, they're all beautiful!

John,
The monochrome-ish photo is a genuine "Winter Photo."
Maybe it's the high latitude that makes daytime shorter than in most places?

Eric,
It's same in Japan that places where there is little snowfall don't have
infrastructure to handle snow.
Two inches of snow turns Tokyo into a chaos.

[RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-01-07 Thread Eric Marth
Takashi — the picture was taken in the evening, returning from a short
ride.

Nice snow pics, Dave!

Paul is right, we generally don't get a lot of snow. We definitely don't
have snow on the ground all winter. We can get a big storm with a couple of
feet every few years. Back in 1996 a blizzard rolled through and we were
out of school for over two weeks. That sort of thing is rare.

What happens frequently is we get between 3" and 6" and we don't have the
infrastructure or the driving knowledge to carry on and everyone does
stupid stuff and they don't know how to drive and it's a real mess.

Last winter we got a really gross and scary storm. Not a lot of snow but it
was very wet and heavy, unusual for our part of the country. A lot of stuff
broke like streetlights and power lines and transformers, which is not
typical. The snow also stuck to the foliage of evergreen trees in an
unusual way and many, many trees were felled by the snow accumulation and
lots of large branches lost. Just after the storm we could hear large
branches snapping from pine trees at the park nearby, loud explosive
cracks. The city and residents were still working on cleanup into the early
summer.

 Paul,
Thank you, I'm glad to know that you enjoy my photos.
Looks like Virginia is a very beautiful place, I can almost feel crisp
air and sweet smell of dry trees.

 Leah,
Wow, blizzard to green in one week?
It gave you a chance to ride your beautiful Platypus, so it was a good
 thing, I believe.
 Please post more photos!

 Eric,
Was it dawn or evening? Either case, beautiful photo, as always. Looks
like you had a very nice New Year's Day!
Paul's and Eric's photos make me wonder - doesn't Virginia have much
 snowfall?

Takashi,
To answer your question about snow in Virginia, generally we get less than
we used to. (No surprise there.) Eric is less than 100 miles north of me,
but we are both in Eastern/Central Virginia, more or less. The farther west
in the state, the higher the elevation and that portion gets snow more
often. Though, most of our area gets snow heavy enough to send snow plows
out fewer than 2-3 times a year, generally.
Often, the snow is just deep enough to ride comfortably when fresh without
a fat bike. I haven't done this trick since these photos in 2010, but for
some dumb fun (and a workout) I went up to the local high school's football
field and rode around the field in concentric circles (ellipses, I guess)
on my single speed bike. The total mileage was nearly 10 miles!

2023-01-06 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Takashi,

Yes, this Platypus looks like an exotic thing on the barren landscape this
time of year. We really did lose 2 feet of snow to warm temps in a week.
Wild. I don’t have more ride photos yet but I do have a video I shot when
winter arrived. I hope you can see it. I’ll attach my Instagram link below.
I hope your winter continues to be mild so you can ride many miles, and I
look forward to hearing about them. Your winter scenery looks gorgeous. The
ice pillars!!!

My son is working hard on learning his Japanese. Maybe one day soon we
will see that lovely countryside for ourselves.

I love riding through those long winter shadows, and the way they blink
past on a forest road ride. It's amazing how unique and recognizable the
landscape of the eastern deciduous forest is! Even before I saw the mention
of Midlothian, I wondered if the photo was from NC or VA. Nice shot!
