Nice looking bike. With the bag installed, the cloth tape choices for

Re: [RBW] The New England Elements, a Homer and an Outdoor Bike Rack

2016-08-16 Thread David Banzer
Agreed. I've been working at the same employer for awhile now and would
lock my bike up outside. I didn't have a 'nice' bike until a few years ago
(funny that now most of my bikes are 'nice' bikes), but I didn't hesitate
locking up outside, though I'd do a thorough locking job (locking skewers,
seatpost binder bolt, cable through saddle/rear wheel) and there's security
regularly out in front where bike rack is at.
About a year ago I got my own office and started bringing my bike inside
into my office. No one questioned it one bit and I didn't ask for
permission ahead of time - I've had no problems at all.

If you do end up needing to lock up outside, I'd be aware of the area and
lock up accordingly. Ride what's comfortable and what you feel comfortable
locking up. That being said, a little variety in what bike to commute on is
a nice option.

Re: [RBW] Re: thunder burt snakeskin vs raceguard

I believe EVO just refers to the Evolution Line which is a group of
Schwalbe's higher-end tires. I believe the Thunder Burt is only offered as
Evolution, where other tires are offered as Evolution or Performance line,
with different versions within each category.

 *RaceGuard®*
This belt was developed specially with racing in mind. A synthesis of
special india rubber and several layers of nylon fabric offers very
effective protection against penetration punctures. There is only a
 minimal
increase in weight and rolling resistance of these tires.

It appears the raceguard version relies on a fabric belt with the
lightskin sidewalls for puncture resistance whereas the snakeskin is "A
light and flexible carcass makes the tire highly resistant to scrubbing" .

So that infers a completely different carcass .

So Drew I'd assume a snakeskin version would be a good choice for you.

[RBW] FS: Shimano Exage Triple Crankset w/ 3 Willow Chainrings - $50 plus shipping

2016-09-02 Thread David Banzer
I'm moving soon, so will be listing stuff as I go through my storage space.
Sale will go towards getting me moved into a house that's within a mile of
the start of a bike trails that's nearly 50 miles of gravel/dirt, mostly
uninterrupted from roadways.

So, to start with -

Shimano Exage Triple Crankset.
Silver-ish finish that is painted on - seen here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/172327888110?var==STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1558.l2649
Includes 3 Willow chainrings of your choice - available sizes are here:
http://treetop.bigcartel.com/category/willow-chainrings-c
Ideally, you'd take 2 110 bcd rings, and 1 74 bcd chainring - but I'm open
if you already have other chainrings and need 3 small rings, or 3 large
rings.
So take your pick! Only thing not included for this deal is triplizer rings.

The crankset itself is 110/74 and includes the original black chainring
bolts.
Cranks and chainrings are NOS - there may be minor scratches from storage.

For crank arm length, I have:
6 sets of 170mm
5 sets of 175mm

Price is $50 plus $7 USPS Priority shipping.
Contact me offlist if you'd like a set.
Include an email address for Paypal so I can send a PP invoice.
Thanks,
David

[RBW] FS: Willow Chainring Sale, cont. - Canvas Bags & Leather Goods - Pre-Order Bag Discount.

2016-09-02 Thread David Banzer
I'm moving soon, need to raise a little cash to help with expenses.

I'm continuing my Willow chainring sale, info here:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/internet-bob/willow|sort:date/internet-bob/XYzICUf0Jec/z-EQo0RSDwAJ
I also have some ready-made canvas bags remaining and a few leather good
prototypes (these are on sale) -
http://treetop.bigcartel.com/category/ready-made
Buy at least one chainring & one bag or leather good, and I'll cover
shipping.

I'm also offering a pre-order discount on made to order bags - pre-order
and pay for a made to order bag now, and get a 20% discount off the price.
This is for standard design bags which are:

Saddle Wedge -
http://treetop.bigcartel.com/product/medium-saddle-wedge-waxed-canvas

Mini Rando - http://treetop.bigcartel.com/product/small-front-rack-bag

Rando - http://treetop.bigcartel.com/product/tall-rando-bag-red-waxed-canvas

Wald 137 Basket Bag - http://treetop.bigcartel.com/product/wald-basket-bag

Bar Bag - http://treetop.bigcartel.com/product/front-bar-bag

Zippered Porteur - http://treetop.bigcartel.com/product/zippered-porteur-bag

Saddlebag - http://treetop.bigcartel.com/product/saddlebag

I'm in the process of moving - and am setting up a temporary work space,
but will have very limited time to work there - so bags will ship in 1-3
months.
If you're interested in a bag at a discounted price and aren't in a rush
for delivery, this would be the time to order.
Shipping is additional - typically a flat $7 per order, though the rando &
porteur bags are $12 as they're larger.

Please contact me offlist if interested, any questions, or to order
chainrings and ready-made bags/goods to ship now, or to pre-order a bag at
a discount.
I'll send an invoice through Paypal.
I'm in the process of updating photos, so if you'd like to see a color or
bag type, let me know offlist.
Thanks,
David

[RBW] Re: Potential Sale of '97 Rivendell Road

2016-09-09 Thread David Banzer
I'd think the price would vary significantly if the stem were stuck or not.
If you don't want to deal with the stem and are selling it as-is, the price
would be much less than if you get the stem out.
Just my thoughts.

Hi Patrck -
Certainly can do something like that. I'm going to be working on something

What are the dimensions on the one you have now?

[RBW] Re: The Cheviot has arrived!

2016-09-25 Thread David Banzer
Bike looks great! I'm trying to figure out how I can justify a Cheviot in
my stable. I just broke my daily commuter, building up a VO Campeur as new
commuter, but if that doesn't fit right, a Cheviot might be in my future.
Any chance you measured the actual width of the Compass Snoqualmie Pass
tires?
I've seen that they run smaller than 44mm on typical road rims. I might
need to order a pair just to have - could fit on a couple bikes depending
on actual width.

[RBW] 650b'd Redwood.

2016-09-25 Thread David Banzer
While I've converted my Redwood to 650b wheels in the past, I briefly
swapped back to 700c wheels with Barlow Pass tires.
I swapped out 650b as I had been using Vee Rubber Speedsters which measured
47mm actual. Under heavy pedaling, the tires would rub at the chainstays. I
could dent the chainstays for more clearance - the current indentations
line up for a 700c tire - but I'd rather not if I don't have to.
When the WTB Horizon tires were announced, I patiently waited until they
were released and some actual measurements were shared. My tools are mostly
packed up so I don't have calipers, but I think they're around 44mm actual,
which is perfect. I'll be adding some SKS fenders shortly - there is
adequate clearances front/rear.

My to do-list for this bike:
Swap cranks - Dura Ace crankset goes back to wife's Clementine, Shimano
Deore/600 cranks will be put on w/ 46/34 rings
Change cassette - it'll be a custom 12-28 8-speed
Change brakes - going to try DC 750 centerpulls
Add fenders
Lower bars 1cm
Swap saddles - GB Aspin saddle will go on
Make up a set of rack-less bags

2016-09-14 Thread David Banzer
Patrick (& everyone I suppose),
I have some nice Horween waterproof leather.
It's a lot thinner than the Berthoud leather. IMO the Berthoud is just a fender
extender.
I'd be happy to make up a set for you (& others I suppose) for a reasonable
price.

[RBW] Re: 26x1.75-2" tire recommendations

2016-08-18 Thread David Banzer
I briefly had a too-small-for-me Trek 890. They're really cool frames, but
they're definitely not a mountain bike. 72.5/73 degree seat/head angles on
the 21"-or-so frame. Trek grouped them together based on wheel size and
called 26"-wheeled bikes 'all-terrain.' They're really more a touring/road
bike that happens to take 26" wheels. I think they came with 1.75" tires or
something smaller maybe, and really weren't intended for big tires.
To your question, I'd go with 1.75" Paselas.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Big One on Appaloosa

2016-08-24 Thread David Banzer
I had the 700c version, liteskin, and they measured 57mm on 25mm external
width rims. With a wider rim, they'd likely measure closer to 60mm. I fit
them on my Clem just fine - I ended up switching for Furious Freds as I
added a front child seat and the extra height from the tires made me a
little uncomfortable trying to get a toe down while on the saddle to
stop/start.
I'd highly recommend the Thunderburts or Furious Freds. Furious Freds are
pretty darn close to a road tire, knobs are really minimally.

[RBW] WTB: Velocity Dyad Rear Wheel - 36h - 135mm

2016-09-30 Thread David Banzer
Building up a new commuter after retiring my trusty Schwinn Voyageur due to
a cracked seat-tube. Transferring most parts over to a VO Campeur.
I had a single speed setup, but will be building up a geared bike so will
need a different rear wheel.

So looking for...
Rear wheel with the following parameters
Velocity Dyad Rim - silver (am matching an already built front wheel)
36 spokes
Rear hub for 8/9/10 speed cassette (7-speed considered as well), preferably
silver in color
135mm o.l.d.

If you have anything, feel free to contact me offlist with what you have
and how much you'd like for it.
I have lotsa Willow chainrings I could trade and would give you a more than
favorable deal if you're in need of a bunch of chainrings.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet Questions

2016-10-18 Thread David Banzer
There were at least a couple versions were clearance was different. Later
ones had more clearance. I have a Redwood (less fancy/expensive Ram,
supposedly similar/identical in most non-cosmetic aspects) - fits Compass
Barlow Pass tires (~37mm actual). Would definitely fit 32mm plus fenders.
Assuming the Redwood is the same as the later Ram, that's a buncha
clearance for a road bike.
Mine is currently set up with 650b wheels and WTB Horizon tires and room
for fenders. I'll likely stick with this setup for awhile, maybe swap in BG
RnRs were trails get muddy.

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet Questions

2016-10-18 Thread David Banzer
Assuming I'm looking at the same unsold listing on eBay, seller notes it'll
fit 38mm, which means it's a larger clearance version - it looks like it
based on the photos, I think.
I'd wager if it fits WTB Horizons, which it likely will, that Paul Racers
(advertised 67mm max reach) won't be long enough. I'm using Tektro long
reach brakes (73mm max reach) and needed to file the ends of the slots to
get brake pads to line up with rims. Dia Compe 750s would likely fit
without modifying.

[RBW] Re: Silver 2 shifters

2016-10-21 Thread David Banzer
If it clicks, it has a power ratchet. The ratcheting mechanism in the
originals is the same as the original bar-ends, which is to say that the
Silver 2 shifters will have a more refined ratcheting mechanism than the
original Suntour shifters. I can't remember off the top of my head, but
there might have a later Suntour thumbshifter version that had the
mechanism in it as the Suntour Sprint dt shifters.

Re: [RBW] Re: Silver 2 shifters

2016-10-20 Thread David Banzer
For those who still want the traditional downtube shifter shape, Dia Compe
makes them with the same ratcheting friction internals as Silver shifters.
It's cosmetically a little different, but functionally it's the same
shifter.
I'd guess this is a little bit why Riv is making something new instead of
making the same shape if they need to invest in a new mold.
I'm looking forward to these!

Barlow Pass tires are sold.

The hooks were actually in the garage when I bought the house, just moved

2. Orc Square Platform Rack - sorta like a mini porteur rack, made in
Portland, rack platform fits a Wald 137 basket nicely, giving more support
to the bottom of the basket, fits on Riv standard mid/upper eyelets, I
removed the tombstone to center a Wald basket better and had plans to use
this as a rear rack for a saddlebag support on a Schwinn Voyageur frame

[RBW] Re: Albastache on what frame?

2016-12-08 Thread David Banzer
I'm starting to think that the Redwood might be a good fit. The Monster
Cross I use the drops quite a bit.
The Redwood is converted to 650b with WTB Horizon tires. I use the drop
portion much less on the Redwood. So maybe that might be the right bike to
try it out on. Then I might need a Roadini if taller sizes are made to fill
in my 'road' bike slot.
A Hunqapillar with albastaches would be ideal, but it's not in the budget
right now. A used one probably, but a new one probably not for a few years.
Things to ponder.

[RBW] Albastache on what frame?

2016-12-06 Thread David Banzer
So I've had an itch to build up an Albastache'd bike. Might be silly to
build up a bike only to have another handlebar option, but I'm ok with that.
My goal is to find an older mtb as a winter project and build it up with
Albastache bars.
Assuming the bars work out for me, I'd like to swap things over to a newer
frameset.

My question is:
Which frame would work well with Albastache bars assuming I want a
semi-upright yet still a tad aggressive setup?
As this is the Riv list, Rivendell frames obviously should be in the mix,
but other frame suggestions are welcomed.

Ideally new bike would not overlap with current bikes/handlebar setups
which are:
Riv Clem - Albatross
Riv Redwood - drops, Nitto B132
Black Mountain Monster Cross - drops, Nitto B132
VO Campeur - shortened Albatross w/ inverse brake levers

Re: [RBW] Re: 29er/700c Studded Tire Options for Clem.

2016-12-13 Thread David Banzer
Good to hear. The Clem can fit a 2.35" tire. I read a couple reviews of the
Nicotine, actual width stated is 2.5". That will clear the rear for sure,
it'll be tight in the front though I have run Schwalbe Big Ones (~58mm)
with fenders so it might fit.
I'm not sure I want to buy a $130 tire (each) that might not fit.
The Schwalbe Ice Spiker would definitely work.

[RBW] Re: 29er/700c Studded Tire Options for Clem.

2016-12-13 Thread David Banzer
Thanks for all the feedback so far. I will say that the Clem would be used
on days of more significant snowfall, so I am considering more off-road
oriented tires as well.
Looks like the Nokian W106 and the Schwalbe Marathon Winter 2.0" are on my
list. Possibly Schwalbe Ice Spikers.
Also considering the 45nrth Nicotine:
http://45nrth.com/products/tires/nicotine - fenders would need to come off
for that one.
My commute starts with a few miles of gravel/dirt trail - I haven't checked
yet but I'm guessing that doesn't see any treatment during the winter for
snow removal - followed by 10 miles of semi-side streets that will have
more residual snow/ice than main thoroughfares.
Since I already have a bike set up with ~40mm studs, I'm inclined to have
the Clem set up for more extreme winter conditions.
Anyone have experience withe 45nrth tires or Schwalbe Ice Spikers?
I guess this would be a WTB as well is anyone has something to sell.

Leif,
Good eye! They're just regular cork grips, but dipped in amber shellac on
both ends, then clear shellacked over the entire thing.
It was an easy way to spruce up the cheaper presto-log type cork grips.

[RBW] FS: B Eyc T Senso Plus Dynamo Front Light - $50 shipped.

2017-01-04 Thread David Banzer
Had this on my main commuting bike, a VO Campeur, and swapped it for a IQ-X
as my commute now includes a couple miles of windy dirt trail that's as
dark as can be.
This light worked great for typical road riding and commuting.
So...

B Eyc T Senso Plus Dynamo Front Light.
Includes fork bracket, bolt, tool, and full length cable to connect a rear
light. Doesn't include the reflector.
Light is lightly used, works great.
Info here:

$50 shipped conUS.
Regular Paypal payment works. I'll send a PP invoice.

[RBW] Re: Who makes Canvas Panniers now?

2016-12-20 Thread David Banzer
For weatherproofing, the rolltop closure is probably your best bet if
you're aiming to keep water/elements out.
I don't think there's production panniers in waxed canvas right now.
Ironweed makes canvas bags, but not waxed. You could wax them yourself of
course!
IMO, Swift makes the best designed panniers, but alas they don't use waxed
canvas anymore.
I've toyed around with pannier ideas, making a pair for myself and opting
not to go with a rolltop and deciding to use waterproof bags inside for
items that absolutely can't get wet.
Here's a pair I made for a Tubus Ergo front rack:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BI3CcDVjlVl/?taken-by=treetopdesigns
I ended up using the Riv HAR trick and made a sleeve that slips into the
rack - the bags are attached with 2 leather straps each and no stiffeners
and the attachment is solid.

Your best bet is custom and Ely of Ruthworks fame would make some awesome
panniers.

Shipping is included in prices, unless noted.
Regular Paypal payment is fine - I'll send an invoice as it's the easiest
way to get shipping info and print a shipping label.
Local pickup is fine too, though I won't be available for a couple weeks to
meet up unless you want to head out to River Grove in the evenings this
week.
Feel free to ask any questions.
Thanks,

shipping

2. Velocity Dyad Rim - used rim, 40h, life left in it or use it for a

3. Brooks B17 Saddle - honey brown, swapped this out for a GB saddle that
I'm sticking with - broken in - $70 shipped

4.Sugino Alpina Cranks - silver, 110mm, regular spider layout meaning no
hidden bolt, 172.5mm, lightly used - $60 shipped or add 49/34 or 46/34
Willow rings for $15 more

5. Nitto M12 Front Rack - used, nice condition, with double-ended canti
bolts, M6 light mounts on both sides - $55 shipped

[RBW] Re: Roast your own coffee?

2017-07-31 Thread David Banzer
I've been roasting coffee for a few years now. Practical? Absolutely.
Benefits? That's up to you to decide. You get to try specific coffees and
roast them how you like, or differently and compare.
It can be a routine part of daily life, or it can be a full-blown hobby
taking up lots of your time, in a good way.
You can roast delicious coffee with low-tech and high-tech devices.
I've tried a few, have yet to buy an actual coffee roaster because I've
been content with my low-tech results. I have used hot air poppers,
stovetop, oven, grill, and a even a Trangia stove.
My preferred method is actually an old wok that's continuously stirred with
a wooden spoon. It takes practice - and each type of coffee roasts
differently.
I get green beans from Burman (http://www.burmancoffee.com/) local-ish
enough to me that they have cheap flat rate shipping.
Another benefit I suppose is that my wife can't drink regular coffee and
drinks decaf - good luck finding freshly roasted decaf options, so for us
roasting is the only option.
And to bring it to bikes - I have roasted up a small batch of coffee on a
bike ride - a Trangia alcohol stove fits just enough fuel to roast a small
batch of coffee.

[RBW] Re: New Clem L's available now?

2017-07-26 Thread David Banzer
I was waiting for the 64cm Clem Ls, which I think are in the next batch,
but am really tempted by the grey 59cm.
I have a 59cm Clem H frame in the same grey - my riding needs have changed
a bit and a step-through frame would be ideal for kid-hauling.
The 59cm fits me just fine, probably no need to go for a size larger for me.
Anyone want to buy a grey 59cm Clem H frame so I can go for the Clem L?

[RBW] FS: Velocity Dyad Wheelset. 700c - 36h - $200

2017-04-25 Thread David Banzer
Apologies for multiple FS posts this week - cleaning out the garage and
trying to pay some bills, possibly put some money aside for a 64cm Clem L..

Velocity Dyad Wheelset
700c
Silver rims, silver Shimano hubs (I want to say they're Deore LX, but need
to confirm)
36h.
135m rear spacing - no skewers included.
Got these lightly used from a fellow listmember, I only needed the rear at
the time, so rear got a little use by me, and the front I never used.

Paypal Personal please on these.

Re: [RBW] WTB / WTT Tektro R559 with hex nut

2017-08-22 Thread David Banzer
Hi Jack,
The bolt is not a standard bolt that you can buy in a hardware store.
However, Tektro uses the same mounting bolts on different brake models.
I've successfully swapped bolts out of the 800a model, which is
inexpensive: https://www.modernbike.com/tektro-800a-sidepull-brake-set
You could do that then sell the set of 800a's as recessed mounts. You only
need to swap the rear recessed with the bolt-on front.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv Redwood Identity Crisis. Tire recommendations needed.

I was doing wheel/tire swaps and for fun test fit Compass Snoqualmie Pass
tires. Rear is tight, I'll need to do a little modification of a DC 610 brake,
but looks like these'll work. Likely will go back to Barlow Pass after I wear
through these.
I'm by a river trail - river does flood so mud is sometimes a factor. I may get

[RBW] FS: 700c Alex DM18 - mismatched hubs. $80

Clem got an updated dynamo wheelset, so selling previous wheels.
I built these up a while ago, can't remember exactly when, and they've been
on a few of my bike at different points.
They handled wider tires just fine and work well on my Clem with 29x2.35
tires, though worked best with 2.1" and under.

Alex DM18 Rims - previous version, these have single eyelets, look like a
wider Sun CR18
Rear Hub - Shimano Deore silver 7-speed era, 135mm, fits Hyperglide and
Uniglide cassettes, can be converted to an 8/9/10 speed cassette, no skewer
Front Hub - unbranded Formula high flange cartridge bearing hub, bolt-on
though axle is hollow - I've shortened another hub's axle and used it with
a qr skewer just fine
36 spokes per wheel - rear spokes are double-butted for sure, I think front
are as well, will confirm

While I've built well over 50 wheels in my lifetime, I'm for sure an
amateur wheelbuilder, with no aspirations of being an expert.
That being said, these wheels worked just fine, and I've never had issues
with wheels I've built for my own bikes.

$80 for both wheels. Local sale preferred, but can ship if you're not in a

[RBW] Riv Redwood Identity Crisis. Tire recommendations needed.

2017-05-12 Thread David Banzer
My Riv Redwood has been fickle over the past couple years. It wanted to be
a road bike, then it got the idea that it could fit 650b in the 46mm range.
It went back and forth between those personalities for awhile.
Lately it's been intimidated by other bikes that fit large volume tire
bikes it shares garage hooks with. Riv Clem and BMC Monstercross are making
it feel unsure of its large volume tire capacities.
So, it wants to go back to being a road bike, but has moved out of the city
near gravel/dirt trails and wants to get some riding time in.
I heard it talking about wanting to wear some 700x35 Panaracer Gravel King
SK's. It feels comfortable wearing up to actual 38mm 700c tires.

What tires would you recommend to the Redwood in its ongoing identity
crisis?
I'll pass along the info.

[RBW] Re: Breaking in a leather Brooks

2017-06-23 Thread David Banzer
The water method works if you follow specific directions that Lon Haldeman
has written. Technically this method is simple leather wet forming and if
done properly, it should stretch out the leather very much - it's just
making a form to your backside by wet forming. The key is to make sure it
is absolutely dry before riding it again. I've done it with a couple of my
B17 standards that were a little stubborn in breaking in and was pleased
with the results, though getting miles in would eventually do the same
thing.
One thing to note is that this method will likely change the overall color
of the saddle. My honey brooks got darker, not as dark as the brown brooks
- this also would occur through use, but the water method speeds the worn
in color faster as well.
I'd really only recommend this method if you're impatient, like me - I had
a bike with a new saddle that I was taking on a trip and wanted to make
sure the saddle was broken in. The water method (if followed correctly)
shouldn't do anything different than a few hundred miles of riding would do.

2017-05-26 Thread David Banzer
For those with albastache setups, how wide do you position brake levers?
Specifically, I'll be using Shimano aero levers, how wide from hood tip to hood
tip?

[RBW] Re: On downsizing (and the 1 bike, and 650b)

2017-05-30 Thread David Banzer
I had my first kid nearly a couple years ago, and the second is due
shortly. My biking priorities and types of rides changed drastically with
an infant. I think the Hunq would be great as a kid hauler/city-commuter.
If you're going to do road rides, I'd suggest keeping the Hunq, sell
everything else, and maybe consider a more road-specific frame like the
Black Mountain Road.
If you had to only have one bike though, I do think a 650b Atlantis would
be the most versatile.
All that said, Option #3 - keep all until shit hits the fan - is what I
typically do when it comes to need to sell bike-related stuff.

[RBW] FT/WTB: Tubus Vega Silver Rear Rack for Nitto/Tubus Rear Rack w/ wider top platform

2017-06-02 Thread David Banzer
My son is going to be moving from front mounted child seat to a rear
mounted one soon and I need a rear rack with a wider platform than I
currently have.
I currently have a Tubus Vega rear rack installed on my Clem, but it
appears I need something with a wider top platform to attach a rear child
seat.

So..
I have:
Tubus Vega Rear Rack - silver, installed new on Clem, rarely carried
anything on it, seatstay struts are full-length/un-cut, slightly curved
shape to fit

I need:
Tubus or Nitto Rear Rack that has a wider platform than the Vega
don't have a specific model I'm set on, so I'm open to whatever

Ideally, I'd want to do a straight trade - could buy outright as well if
the price is right.

Older photos of my rack on Clem here:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BJv-HOIDJ4t/?taken-by=treetopdesigns

Contact off-list if you have something for trade/sale.
Thanks,
David

Dave,
Would you be able to post a photo of your setup with the Smarti? I've
thought about trying that one out mounted to the Riv-standard upper mid
eyelets. Would be nice to see a photo.
