RE: POP3 virtual hosting with same IP ?

1999-12-28 Thread Charles Boening

I use Qmail (http://www.qmail.org) with vckpw. Works fine for me. Running
on RH 5.2, 6.0 and 6.1 servers.

All my usernames for pop3 clients are -> user%domain.com

to add a user, I just enter the email I want followed by the password.
Using an adduser program of course.
   vadduser [EMAIL PROTECTED] password

When the user authenticates, the vchpw program authenticates against a
unique user list for that domain. That way, you can have [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and [EMAIL PROTECTED] without having a username conflict.

Seems to be working fine. I'm also using a hacked IMAP server. Although I
seem to have problems with MS Outlook Express clients. Go figure! :-)

Hello,

I had heard that there're pop3 daemon using "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" as the

domain, is it true? If so, would anyone tell me the detail of the pop3

Thank you very much.

Cachemgr.cgi shows Squid's log data for you -- the documentation describes
it quite well.

Check the ACL entries in squid.conf to make sure that your systems are

Can't download w/minicom

1999-12-28 Thread Dale Huckeby

Help! I have been hoping to upload files from my old computer and
download them into my new one, but I can't get minicom to download.
Actually, a couple of files did download at one point but I have _no_
idea how I did it. Everytime I try I get a CRC error at about 4000
or 5000 bytes and then it stops dead. I've been downloading via telix
for several years, and it stops and starts a lot, _but at least it
keeps on going_. Can anyone give me a clue as to what to look for?
Right now I'm trying to download into my mail directory, so the path
I'm using is /root/mail , and I'm using zmodem (but kermit doesn't
work either, nor does ymodem. I've got RH 6.0 installed, if it makes
any difference. Any suggestions I'll gladly try. Any questions
I'll happily answer.

Abit BP6 BIOS update = no SMP!

1999-12-28 Thread Randy Carpenter

I have an Abit BP6 Motherboard with dual Celerons. I have been running
Red Hat 6.1 with kernel 2.2.13 (with SMP) for some time with little
difficulty. Abit recently released a BIOS update to fix some things. I
flashed my board with the latest update, only to find that my SMP kernels
no longer will boot. Uniprocessor kernels will boot fine, but SMP will
not work. The SMP kernel will boot until right after detecting the IDE
hard disks and cd-rom, and then the machine will reboot instantly. Does
anyone know why this would happen with a BIOS update? Perhaps a broken
BIOS? Perhaps a snafu in the kernel that is being tickled by a difference
in BIOSes ?

It checks users quotas and then sends an email to users who exceed their
quota.

What I don't like about it, is that their is no provision to change the
message it sends etc, without rebuilding from source. IMHO a program such
as warnquota, needs a config file.

If you're willing to do it in two passes, you can use useradd to create the
account and details and chpasswd to give all the accounts passwords (feeding
in either plain text or encrypted passwords).

note if you are using MD5, chpasswd will only give you standard encryption.

All you need is to export your spreadsheet into a text file, and using
some basic scripting tools (eg cut/paste) and some editor work you can
easily migrate the users from the spreadsheet into UNIX.

Yah, if you do it invisibly, then people can't just turn their proxy off
to get past the logging. A nice feature if there are some dodgy
characters on your network :) I dunno why squid did that, maybe a config
error?

I was thinking that there might be something to help you in the
portsentry suite of software (a definite possibility), but then I
relaised that there's even a better way of doing things. Using libpcap
you can just do some simple packet sniffing and pull out the relevant
data. I think that there is some framework code that you can download at
ee.lbl.gov. even tcpdump with the right flags will achieve the same goal
that you are after.

Saying this, I do believe that the proxy solution is more elegant,
because it not only provides you with a means of tracking access, it
introduces a new service to the people on your network, which will
probably enhance their web experience.

Of course this is all up to you, but I hope that it helps somewhat...

Chris Dowling.

Make that a write-protected DOS boot disk...

This still might trigger the BIOS' virus "protection", depending on how it
determines if the boot sector has been modified.

> > How do I remove this virus -- it's a nasty one in that I can't boot NT (dual boot
>system)
> > but Linux does work.
[...]

Keep in mind that if you have NT installed, the fdisk /mbr will wipe out
booting to NT as well, as the DOS command replaces the bootsector with a
generic Win9x/DOS boot sector. If you made an Emergency Recovery Disk
(start->run->rdisk), you can recover. Keep in mind that you can't use an
ERD from another system in nearly all cases. If you don't have one, you're
probably gonna need to reinstall NT. (I'd do it to another directory, so
you get the boot files in without messing with the installed OS, then edit
the boot.ini file after you're dual booting to point back to the original
OS, then reapply the service pack of your choice to update the system
files.

Now if you're using LILO to point to NT's boot sector, you're going to be
in the same boat. If you're using NT's boot loader to point to the LILO
boot loader, do the fdisk /mbr, then lilo, then NT.

Re: Virus in Master Boot Record

1999-12-28 Thread Clint Tinsley

Ooops... Missed this part. The virus warning showed up when you installed RH 6.1 and
now NT
won't boot? Are you sure it is a virus or is it "just" your BIOS detecting that the
boot
record changed as it now appears. You should probably do a virus check from a boot
floppy to
verify that you didn't pick up a boot sector virus but it is also very likely that no
virus
exists and your "dual boot" master boot record got trashed which prevents NT from
booting.
What are you using for a boot manager?

Re: Virus in Master Boot Record

turn off the virus detection in the BIOS ! scratch it, don't use
it , whatever.

They are dumb, and you will experience many errors because of this (unless
you never change things on your system) , from what you have posted the
alert would be because you installed Linux and the BIOS is seeing the
changed boot values

get a separate virus program for your NT system

look for something called gag to manage your dual booting or an eqv. , I
can mail it off the list if not familiar with freshmeat etc

I think I really like this idea. I can set up squid and use ipchains to
automatically route all output via squid. This would mean that I do not even
have to modify each machine's browser configuration to specify a proxy!

I fiddled a bit with squid, installing it via the RH 6.1 rpm. As soon as I
installed it, it stopped letting me access the web! I uninstalled it for the

With nslookup you should be able to get info returned on your own servers
or any other qualified servers

at the prompt nslookup should return the
name and IP of the secondary server

to force nslookup to use the secondary server for some other lookups an
tests do ...

Only possible if it is being absolutely hammerredI have not seen
all your tests, but DNS is only for resolving names, and if you have 2
servers and one is off the local net, then this should never stop a name
from resolving..from outside anyway..

What I would do from here is if you are notified of when the condition
exists, ping an IP that you know is good within your network (say the NIC
of the DNS server) , test others within the net as well

if ping return is zero . its not DNS as DNS does not stop ping to an
IP .

I will contact you off the list

try making a linux boot disk. then format your mbr. I don't know how to
do this under linux, but if you have a dos boot disk then you can usr
"fdisk /mbr". Once you have cleared it, use your bootdisk to boot into
linux, and run lilo to restore the boot record.

One of the "emergency recovery disks" that you get with Norton AntiVirus (IBM, etc.)
among
others will clean boot sector viruses. I think there is even a downloadable "recovery
disk"
on the the Symantec site, at least there was at one time.

Virus in Master Boot Record

1999-12-28 Thread Paul R. Watkins

I installed RH 6.1 a week or so ago. I have a virus detection program in my bios
setup. It
detects a virus in the masterboot record. I can get by this and boot linux and
everything
works fine in Linux.

How do I remove this virus -- it's a nasty one in that I can't boot NT (dual boot
system)
but Linux does work.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: trying to set up unattended ftp as part of a shell script

1999-12-28 Thread Rick L. Mantooth

Paul,
You can (caution, insecure) just create a ~/.netrc file for the
user that is running the ftp script. (man ftp).

machine machine.somewhere.domain
loginanonymous
password [EMAIL PROTECTED]

You will need a "BLANK LINE" after the password line.

You will also need to chmod 0400 ~/.netrc

Like I said, this is insecure as root can read the file, but it works.
You can replace the anonymous and [EMAIL PROTECTED] with real user/passwords.

Ugly hack:

troubles with pcmcia package

of linux-2.2.13, and pcmcia-3.1.8. built, installed
and the network card works just fine. however, no luck
getting the modem card to work (28.8K new media net surfer).

when i try to bring up ppp (with "ifup ppp0"), while
this worked under the stock red hat 6.1 install, what i
get in /var/log/messages is:

Dec 28 19:54:37 dell ifup-ppp: pppd started for ppp0 on /dev/modem at 115200

  ... repeatedly.

as a test, i popped out the card and re-inserted it, just to
see what cardmgr had to say, which was:

Re: rm help

1999-12-28 Thread Rick L. Mantooth

Erik,
Sorry, I missed the first of the thread.

One sure fire way to see what is going on, is to cd into
the dir that is giving you fits and do this:
/bin/ls -1a >dir.list

Then "vi dir.list" and issue the command in vi
:set list

That will show you any special characters in filenames.
ie: filenames with SPACES on the end would look something like:

filename $

if it was named: filenameSPACESPACESPACE

If you want to continue from there, delete all of the filenames
in the dir.list file that you DO NOT want to delete, (. and ..) and then
issue the folowing commands in the vi session:

:1,$s/^/\"/g
(That will place a " (double quote) on the beginning of every line.

:1,$s/$/\"/g
(That will place a " (double quote) on the end of every line.

Then,
:1,$s/^/rm -i .\//g
(That will insert "rm -i ./" at the beginning of every line.

Be sure to :w! here to write the file ./dir.list

If all looks right, you can run the commands from inside of vi
like so:

:! sh ./%

vi has the capability of running the file you are working on as a command.
(handy trick for testing scripts while you are writing them)

You will need to look for any other special characters in the dir.list
file while you are there and maybe "escape" them.
ie:

file[name

would need to be:
rm -i file\[name(example only. You see what I'm after)

in the file before you execute.

For some kind of program, I'd need to see your original post.
(sorry I missed it)

Have fun,

Just as a side-note.

You would benifit from i686 opt on the PPro200.

PPro, PII, PIII all have the same basic core., the P6 core.

PII  == PPro w/MMX
PIII == PII w/SSE.

Apart from other differences.

The PPro has integrated full speed L2 cache for instance where the PII
has external half-speed L2 cache.

The PIII comes in both flavors nowadays, etc etc etc...

But the basic core is the same.

>
> What can I do to 'create' my /dev/ttyS4 and /dev/ttyS5 ?

What you need is to use 'mknod' with the appropriate options.

In /usr/src/linux/Documentation/devices.txt we see that ttys are of
major 4 and that the ttyS' are from minor 64 and up. We also see it's a
character device. (That's what we specify to mknod).

ttyS0, 1, 2, 3 are minor 64, 65, 66, 67 so ttyS4 and S5 are 68 and 69.

Run this:

mknod /dev/ttyS4 c 4 68
mknod /dev/ttyS5 c 4 69

The 'c' is 'character device', the '4' is Major, the '68/69' is minor'.

Then we see that the other ttyS are owner root, group tty and have
access flags : crw--- .
Change owner and permission of files:

chown root.tty /dev/ttyS[45]
chmod 600 /dev/ttyS[45]

Yes, write like that with the brackets. Saves you some writing :)

Now an 'ls -l /dev/ttyS*' should show you that you suddenly have the
required ttyS'.

Good luck!

Because that's the way Redhat themselves said to do it in their documentation
(granted, it was their 5.1 manual) and it has always worked for me.

I really don't see any advantage to doing it your way as far as the modules are
concerned (not much difference in doing a vi versus a mv) but it really would
help keep the images straight.

Thanks for the tip...it's easy to just keep doing something that works even if
it's not the best way!!!

Re: hardware testing

1999-12-28 Thread Manuel Camacho

Hi Charles!!!

If you are really into Hardware, you may want to take a look at "Upgrading and
Repairing PCs, Linux Edition" from Mueller (QUE). It comes with a bootable CD
with a Debian distribution that let you make diagnostics and other sort of
things.

On the other hand, there is a tool you may want to try "info" in KDE control
center. It has information about the IRQs and DMAs and other important info on
setting up hardware.

This other is not on any hand, but in my neck, as some guys on the list will
try to kill me for the comment. But, when I have had serious hardware
configuration problems, I make a basic Win98 install. Win diagnostic software
is better. Once I have my system with no errors under Winblows, and I have no
conflicts, I can repartition my drive and reinstall Linux with the settings I
already know.

Hope someone has a better answer than mine.

Hi.

Why?

vi /usr/src/linux/Makefile

edit the EXTRAVERSION= to include something like -20_r1 where r1 stands
for release 1, then next recompile change it to r2, etc.

Use that naming scheme for the kernel too, etc.

That's what RedHat themselves recommend to do.

Result is that all modules will go into their own directory in
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20_r1.

ttyS4 and ttyS5?

1999-12-28 Thread Gustav Schaffter

Hi,

I have one PC with the two standard serial ports ttyS0 and ttyS1 plus an
STB Fourport card.

When I run OS/2 in this PC I had setup one of the STB ports on IRQ 11
and the remaining three in IRQ 12, all with different I/O addresses of
course.

I'm currently trying to configure my serial ports and it was my
intention to run setserial from rc.local for ttyS2, ttyS3, ttyS4 and
ttyS5.

ttyS2 and ttyS3 works fine. But when running setserial for ttyS4 or
ttyS5 if fails with the message that /dev/ttyS4 (or 5) doesn't exist,
which is also the case.

What can I do to 'create' my /dev/ttyS4 and /dev/ttyS5 ?

Regards
Gustav

Re: soundcard, scsi, and cd-rw

I can vouch for the yamaha cd-rw (mine is awsome - I burn't a few CDs
yesterday while compiling the kernel in a loop and doing various other
things)

get xcdroast. It comes bundled with cdrecord and other tools to do
everything you will want to do. I think there is a new gtk version in the
works (old one is tk). You should have very little configuration to do, if
any for the scsi cdrw.

Re: ipchains and pptp

1999-12-28 Thread Charles Galpin

To be quite honest, I willing to bet my problems were user error. I could
simply not find any decent documentation on it, and it pretty much boils
down to ppp options anyway. But I was literally stuck at the most basic
options, given that all I have to go with is the info I use to connect
froma windows pptp client - a server IP, a domain name, and a username and
password. You'd think with those few parameters I could use it, but no :)

I won't have time for a while, so hpefully when I do get around to it,
this new development effort will have progressed a little.

I'm getting by just nicely with a windows vpn client until then, thanks to
your VPN masquerade efforts!

thanks though

script to buld add user accounts

1999-12-28 Thread NotLacan

I run a small mail server for some schools that cannot afford their own and
from time to time I get a list of new users who need accounts. I would like
to automate this as much as possible on my box running RH 6.1.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a script that would take a text file with
something like:
name1 pass1
name2 pass2
... ...
as a format and then just go through the list and run adduser against is with
the proper tags? I am not much of a shell script hacker, and I have tried
modifying a PERL script that I have just to crypt a list of
username/passwords, but I am failing there as well.

Any help would be much appreciated. I volunteer my time and when I get 50+
names at a time it is a big time commitment, as I get the account request in
the form of a spreadsheet it would be nice if I could put it to use. Thanks
in advance.

Cheers,

Jack.

hardware testing

1999-12-28 Thread Charles Galpin

Hi All. this gets a bit long winded, but please bear with me.

The short version is what is the best (most intensive) way to test
hardware integrity, as well as isolate the exact problem?

yesterday I upgraded my box. I bought a new case/mb/cpu/ram and used all
the other existing components.

It's a AMD K7 500 w/ 256MB ram btw :)

I am currently running a kernel compile in a while /bin/true; do loop and
using the box at the same time as a "burn in test". It's been running like
this since yesterday sometime. I'm quite happy.

Oh so I should ahve mentioned that the old box used to lock up pretty
frequently. I used to attribute it to the fact that I used to have scsi
warnings on bootup, and felt like the drives were running too hot. Hence
the upgrade to a full tower case with three case fans.

Now, the real reason for this post is that I took the old case/mb/cpu/ram
combo (K6 II 450/ 256mb), stuck in a new ide CDROM, a new ide HD, and two
new netgear nics. My intention is to make this a server for my mom who
lives a 1000 miles away. It needs to be reliable.

Well the old mb/cpu/ram combo locked up on me twice already. I ran the
kernel compile loop on this box as well. It made it overnight, but locked
up sometime this morning. I ran it again, and this time it locked up in
just under 3 hours. I am currently running it again with one of the 128MB
dimms removed.

Nothing in the logs when this occurs.

So, I'd really like to figure out exactly which component needs
replacing. I'm guessing it's likely in the order of ram, then cpu, then
mb? But, I'd also like to be darn sure I test these properly. This really
needs to be reliable. The last box I setup for my mom turned out to have a
memory problem - only found out once it was installed and I was trying to
build something on it. THen lightning took out the modems so I could no
longer remotely admin it (but that's a whole other problem).

I have also just kicked off a program called memtester
http://www.qcc.sk.ca/~charlesc/software/memtester in the hopes of catching
a memory problem.

thanks
charles

The 1.0.2 PPTP VPN client has a bug that can sometimes cause the
connection to fail.

The development of the Linux PPTP client was suspended for a while
because Scott Ananian moved on to other things. It's now being moved
to a CVS repository so that development may resume. There should
hopefully be a 1.0.3 version out soon that fixes this bug and adds

login: can't resolve symbol '__xstat'

1999-12-28 Thread Ryan Caveney

At work I have recently inherited a couple of RH 4.0 machines with a
variety of legacy functions no one really wants to re-implement, but a
couple of things that did need to be upgraded. I know the clean answer is
to do a fresh install, but I was hoping to do a minimal upgrade of just the
desired functions.
To that end, I upgraded just the packages we cared about, which
required going to glibc (I chose 2.0, as 2.1-devel wants 2.2.x kernel
headers) -- which overwrote a number of things, but nothing that looked too
bad at first glance. Now everything seems OK (in single-user mode and via
ftp, etc.) except for one major problem -- /bin/login won't execute, dying
with the message "can't resolve symbol '__xstat'".
The only reference to this message I've found in the archives has to
do with XFree86, but these machines have no X at all installed, and nm duly
reports __xstat is indeed in /lib/libc.so ... can anyone tell me where
exactly to look for the offending version mismatches, and whether there is
anything useful or worthwhile left to do but reinstall the system?

I know, I have been compiling kernels for years. This is a new one for me.

better yet, here is my config:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDESCSI=m

#
# SCSI support
#
CONFIG_SCSI=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SD=y
CONFIG_CHR_DEV_ST=m
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_SR=y

This is the part you want to see. This one is still a stock redhat kernel,
besides turning off ftape support. advansys is my card type, and its in
the /lib/modules...scsi area. My other pc has the same setup and it works
fine on 2.2.13.

btw: I made a mistake, its block-major-8. Scsi right?

This is all confusing me.. Why this doesn't work is beyond me.

No problem, then. I did the same thing earlier this month when I moved my
system from one box (with old bad drives) to another (with new ones).
You can run rdist over ssh if you just set ssh to use rhosts
authentication.

The rdist command looks something like:

rdist -f distfile \
-P /usr/local/bin/ssh \
-l file=rdist.log=notice,nerror,ferror,warning

And check these lines in /etc/sshd_config:

IgnoreRhosts no
RhostsAuthentication yes
AllowSHosts [space-separated list of IP addresses]

Re: kernel recompile

1999-12-28 Thread Gerry Doris

You said you did a make modules_install but didn't say if you did a make
modules??

The full command in the /usr/src/linux directory should be:

make dep modules modules_install bzImage

Prior to running this you should go into the /lib/modules directory and:

mv 2.2.16 2.2.12.old

This will ensure that you're got what you want in the way of modules once
you're done. As the other person suggested you might want to double check what
you really did remove ie. SCSI support by doing an

make xconfig

prior to the kernel make command.

OT: Lithium Ion Batteries

1999-12-28 Thread Ahbaid Gaffoor

Hi All,

I'm really OT here, but I need some advice,

I got a new Lithium Ion battery for my laptop, it's been in for ages but
is taking lonnng to charge...

Is this normal?

It took a day for the critical low charge flashing light to stop, and
it's been at 0% for about six hours...

Any feedback is welcome,

thanks,

Ahbaid.

module help

1999-12-28 Thread scott lockhart

hi folks,

my current configuration consists of an IBM ThinkPad 600E running RedHat
6.1, kernel 2.2.13.

the problem that i'm experiencing is that i get a long list of
unresolved module dependencies during bootup and a few "modprobe: out
of file handle" messages. though all module related functions (sound,
pcmcia, fat/dos emulation) seem to work fine. i cannot find a copy of
the messages in any of /var/log/*, to be able to take a closer look and
any documentation that i've looked at (HOWTO's, man pages, "Running
Linux") doesn't seem to have a lot of detailed information re:
conf.modules, etc.

any assistance as to where i can find more info would be appreciated!

cheers!

There is a limit... you can tweak it in one of the kernel headers, and I
think you might be able to modify it through a proc file.

No.. I did make modules_install and I looked:

Re: trying to set up unattended ftp as part of a shell script

1999-12-28 Thread Vinay Bharel

Have you thought of using SCP instead of FTP to transfer files. If
security is important to you then you should be using SCP instead of FTP
anyway.

If you are using SSH2 you can use SCP2 without passwords. Go here for
directions on how to setup SCP2 to work without passwords :

You can run ppp-off as soon as fetchmail is done. Here's one way to do it:

#!/bin/sh
/usr/sbin/usernetctl ppp0 up
sleep 60
defroute=`/sbin/route -n | /bin/grep -c ^0.0.0.0`
if [ "$defroute" = "1" ] ; then
/usr/bin/fetchmail
else
echo "Connection failed."
fi
/usr/sbin/usernetctl ppp0 down

The script depends on your connection script setting a default route when
the connection is up. If you have a default route even when you're not
connected, then you'll have to figure out a different way to test the
connection.

I don't think you can do exactly what you describe without something like

I had this, and fixed it by finding the part of the XF86Config (I think)
file which refers to the mouse (Pointer section), and changing the line
about the Protocol to IMPS/2 instead of PS/2, or vice-versa. Some people
have also spoken about turning off gpm with gpm -k although I haven't done
this. A search of Deja.com might turn up more advice.

I'm afraid I don't know what the underlying cause of the problem is!

Expect is the tool you want - I believe there is an O'Reilly book
about it.

Obligatory warning: It's not a good idea to put the passwords in a
file since anyone who executes the script can look at the file and see
the passwords.

trying to set up unattended ftp as part of a shell script

I'm trying to write a shell script where part of the functionality is an
ftp. How can I use ftp or a related utility so that I, or someone else
doesn't have to be there to type the password.

I tried

ftp < filename, where filename is a text file that has stuff in it that
I would type at the promptsno go.

I also tried

ftp host.do.main < filename

I can't use anything like rsh or rcp as this is a very secure
environment that I'm working in. Every box is locked down for the most
part. Most of my activities have to be done via ssh.

I haven't tried sftp, but I'm pretty shure that it's not going to work.

Anyone have any suggestions???

Sincerely,
Paul C.

I thought that the buffer flushing was done every 30 secs or so by the kernel anyway?
I tend to find that the main cause of stuffed up config in my X stuff is what gnome

any leftovers in tmp and then start my X session. If I don't do this then I find more

Do a 'man pppd' and look at the options. Recent pppd's (like I was looking
at the stock 6.1 pppd last night) have an 'idle' option. Also a 'demand'
option which might mean that you could discard any complicated scripts in
favor of just running pppd which will wait for traffic to the outside
world, connect, and then idle out. At least that's what I'm going to try
tonight.

Sure - edit the CFLAGS settings in /usr/src/linux/Makefile and
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/Makefile.
You'll probably want to remove the -fno-strength-reduce from
arch/i386/Makefile as well as adding the other flags -
-fno-strength-reduce is no longer required with anywhere near recent
versions of gcc/egcs.

For my own kernel, I'm using gcc 2.95.2 with the flags
-O6 -fomit-frame-pointer -fexpensive-optimizations -ffast-math
-fstrict-aliasing -mpentiumpro -march=i686

(This is optimizing for speed, possibly at the cost of stability. Works
for me, but I hardly ever have an uptime of > 2 days (I tend to update the
kernel often...))

I haven't built many modules lately (just the ones I'm using myself - need
to save some CPU time if I want to "work" on anything other than waiting
for the computer to finish all those build processes. ;) ) - the ones I'm
building (3c59x, parport, parport_pc, lp, nfs, sound, sb, unix) don't have
any problems.
For what modules are you getting the errors?

If you have no previous experience, you'll probably want to look at
KDevelop (http://www.kdevelop.org/). It's included in the Red Hat
PowerTools.

A common legend, if you ask me. Debian is very stable. So are most other
distributions (haven't had to reboot my Red Hat Linux box for anything
other than kernel updates for ages).

Right now, the latest stable release of Debian is pretty much outdated
(still using glibc 2.0 etc), which is IMO a problem (bugfixes not making
it in), so if you decide to give Debian a try, you're probably better off
picking the "unstable" version.

gtk+-devel.

You'll also want to make sure you have installed glib-devel, glibc-devel
and XFree86-devel.

Depends on what you chose to install. Make sure you instaed at least:

egcs
egcs-c++
glibc-devel
cpp

I don't know anything about them first-hand, but the printer database
lists some of them:

> Canon BJC-1000, 2000, 5100, 530, & 6000

1000: Neither known good nor known bad. Will probably work with bjc600
  driver.
2000: Works, but only at 360x360 DPI as opposed to 720x360. Use bjc600
  driver.
5100: Neither known good nor known bad; 5000, however, is known bad, and
5100 seems to be its direct successor.
530: Neither known good nor known bad. Will probably work with bjc600
  driver.
6000: Works, but only at 360x360 DPI. Use bjc600 driver.

> HP 697c

Works perfectly. Use cdj550 or cdj670 driver.

> Epson Sylus 640, 740, 850, 860, 900

640: Works perfectly, even at 1440x720 DPI. Uniprint driver.
740: Works perfectly. Uniprint driver.
850: Unknown, will probably work with uniprint driver.
860: Unknown, will probably work with uniprint driver.
900: Works at 720x720 DPI, use uniprint driver in stc500 mode.

> Lexmark 3200

This is listed as a WinPrinter (doesn't work at all).

There are no compilation problems if you stick with egcs, but the i686
optimizations in egcs suck.
If you want real optimizations, you should use gcc 2.95.2 (or a 2.96 CVS
snapshot... 2.96 has much better optimizations, but will
(currently) generate broken code. 2.95.2 is stable.). - unfortunately,
some bad code doesn't compile with gcc 2.95.2. In most cases, the patches
are trivial though - I've put the ones I've built up at
http://people.redhat.com/bero/gcc295.

You very probably have this already - you said you have XFree86-devel,
which IIRC requires glibc-devel.

> gtk+-devel-10-1.0.6-5

You don't need that. gtk+ 1.0.* is obsolete, and the output of configure
you sent clearly wanted 1.2.*.
Just gtk+-devel-1.2.something will do.

If you need gtk+ 1.0.* for something else, you're looking for the wrong
filename - it's gtk+10-devel-1.0.6-5.

But that'll give you the optimizations you want (i686).
If you want more speed at the cost of some compatibility (different
libstdc++), you'll want to upgrade to gcc 2.95.2 (rawhide) before
recompiling.
