I finally got it to install...but after following Vince's suggestions on the options
to install..
Now I have to install the packages the hard way(gnome,etc..)...

You are right..Compaq is a difft animal itself..
Their new hardware is ok..its the older ones you gotta deal with...

Its nice once it is installed...its the installation that's a bit of a pain..
But thanks to this listserv and its members, makes my life easier..:):)

Smartstart? , must be a compaq proliant?

There are known issues with Compaq and Redhat, they keep
removing
from random releases the data files that are needed to deal
with the differences
between the way compaq does things hardware wise and the
rest of the planet.
had the same problems with 6.1, 7.2, 8.0, and 9.0. I think
it is a ploy to sell
you new compaq hardware. compaq provides the software to
redhat and compaq
certifies it but only for their latest systems. I have a ton
of compaq proliant here.
Not buying any more cause it is just to difficult to deal
with it's issues with Linux.

I got an errata cdrom from Redhat with the missing driver
support files for 6.1.
Contact REDHAT support, they should be able to point you at
the download file that you use
to boot redhat 9.0 that has the missing files as well.

Go plain text (or try beating it to death with the
installer) and then patch it
and fix the video later. check compaq's (HP.com) website
support area for redhat downloads.

redhat 9.0 installed flawlessly on two P3 proliant 1.4 GHZ
dual cpu system , DL320 i think,
had to try the installation 8 times on a a P3-600 1600
before I got it past the video hang
still some other problems. Different video chips for
starters.

tried to disable on board video and put in a new ATI RAGE
video card , followed
all the Redhat and compaq instructions for doing so
including trying all the PCI slots
and disabling the onboard. Never could get it to switch to
the new slotted card.
Googled the planet as well for answers.. another
unsolved mystery.

The server is usually attached to a KVM solution, but when I am installing, I am

RH 9 install issue

2003-10-22 Thread Go, Jeffrey

Hello group,

I have googled this issue to death and have not been able to find an answer.

I am installing RH 9 on a Compaq 1850r server.
The server has the latest BIOS.

When Anaconda runs, it hangs after the "probe video monitor" status when installing.
I have tried "linux lowres" and "linux 1024x768" options on boot and also the text
install to no avail..

Any assistance is appreciated.

Thanks
Jeff

I would say yes because:

RedHat certification is now based on RHEL

The certification is useful in itself. Most of the RHCE course is not
RedHat specific and much of not even Linux specific. (Don't know about
RHCT but I presume it's similar).

There is no longer and will never be a Red Hat 10. The consumer version
of Red Hat Linux essentially no longer exists. It has been replaced by
"Fedora Linux Project". The first release of "Fedora Core" is scheduled
to be released November 3rd.

It should be noted and I am quoting from the Fedora Project web site..

"The Fedora Project is not a supported product of Red Hat, Inc."

The problem is that MS Proxy server 2.0 ( I assume this is what you are using)
requires that a MS Proxy client be installed on clients that wish to access the proxy

I don't think it has RH client available on it...

Just change the "ext3" flag in /etc/fstab file to "ext3" to the
respectives mount points.

Obs.: This Don't remove the journal of the partition, but turns easily
to revert to ext3 after.

I have something odd that just happened. I had RH 9 installed on a
Compaq Presario 2 weeks ago, and then had to use the Windows XP recovery
to install XP because my boss said that it had to be used for something
else. Well, he then told me that I could use it for linux and I start
the installation. Here is the deal. When I installed linux two weeks
ago, it went without any problem. Then the XP recovery went without a
problem. However, when I installed RH 9 this morning, it does not seem
to recognize the ethernet card. At the point in the installation
process where it asks you about IP addresses etc. it did not ask.
Additionally, the green light is on on the card but the yellow light is
to on. Any suggestions?

An hour, or a couple of hours. Not days, anyway.

Define "more than enough" since I usually tend to believe the computer and
not the user in a case like this. Post the output of "df -m" while you're
at it. Remember that your disk has to hold the package _and_ the installed
files.

Also, are you trying to install the kernel src.rpm, or the kernel-source
RPM? They are most definitely different animals!

-u actually performs the updates.

These are both independent from selecting the packages to be installed on
the website; those are installed automatically a few hours later (usually
one or two hours later) when the system checks in with RHN and gets
instructions.

Telnet issue?

2003-07-16 Thread Go, Jeffrey
Hi all,

I installed the telnet rpm on my machine, and yet I cannot see the service under
/usr/sbin.
Doing a rpm -qa|grep telnet , I see the telnet package is installed.

I have already created and configured the /etc/xinetd.conf and /etc/xinetd.d(creatted
a telnet file) based on RH
Website docs..

Any other thoughts?

By the way, when I did initial install, I selected NO FIREWALL..

2003-07-12 Thread Go, Jeffrey
Thanks Michael and everyone./..

I got the machine up and running..
Dl'ed the kernel via up2date and re-configured the lilo.conf file and ran lilo -v...
It booted ( thank god) to the latest kernel..

I understand I can be a pain..( my wife agrees)..
But there is no mistaking my appreciation to everyone in this list who is always ready
to help..

And yes, I did remove one system so I can insert the other machine..:)

This thread was opened by Jeffrey Go, so what is your particular
problem? What do you mean with "I did a rebuild"? For the Red Hat
Network Update Agent to work, you need a free slot in your account
at https://rhn.redhat.com -- else, upon registering your machine,
you would always see the error message that you don't have any
entitlements left. So, go there, log in and remove old and unused
systems to free up at least the single demo entitlement.

RE: Up2date issue?

2003-07-11 Thread Go, Jeffrey
Hi Ed

I re-confired the up2date parameters to dl the kernel packages..

Now I am running into issue where it downloads the
Kernel.2.4.20 and smp packages with no issues, but when it tries to dl the source
file, I gte a fatal error saying I don't have enough space and it needs 58 MB of space
n root directory. I do a df -k and I see it has close to 200 MB available...any ideas?

Also, after doing the up2date, isnt a reboot supposed to boot into the new kernel? I
am still seeing the old kernel upon reboot...
Do I have to modify the Lilo.conf file?

Thank you for you patience

The default up2date configuration is to skip kernels. From the command
line, add --force when doing kernels. I always update everything
excluding the kernels, and do just a --force on the kernel last.

I have no idea how it's done from the GUI - I don't do Linux GUIs.

I typically run up2date --nox --configure to make a few changes to the
configuration before I run it the first time. this also will tell you that
is will skip the kernels. I hope this helps.

Installing modutils

2003-07-09 Thread Go, Jeffrey
Hi all,

I am attempting to update the kernel of my machine to 2.4.20 from 2.4.18 running 7.3
I am getting a failed dependency error regarding modutils, saying that it requires
modutils higher than
2.4.18...
The machine currently has modutils 2.4.14,.
So I dl the rpm and attempt to run it using option -ivh and it does not install..

Will this rpm need other dependencies??

The problem was, I had Hp Compaq server and the only way to disable UDMA(which was the

Try using google. Searching for "osb4 bug" renders the following as the first
result: http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/long_list.cgi?buglist=66054 and
http://www.cs.helsinki.fi/linux/linux-kernel/2002-22/0405.html as the second
result in which Alan Cox eplains that this is a buggy chipset and you should
set your BIOS not to use anything but multiword DMA2 (ie no UDMA).

Bye,

Have a look at http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/linux/

Red Hat provides the necessary documentation online - you'll find the
Installation Guide for recent releases on that page.

There are multiple CDs. Do not just go armed with one. When copying
the ISO to CD, ensure that you choose the option in your burning
application to create the CD from the ISO. When you're done, you'll
have a CD that looks complete on Windows (assuming that's where you're
burning it from) with a bunch of root directories. If you have a single
file with a .iso extension on the CD, you need to try again.

Note also that 7.3 is not a current release. Although supported
(through the end of this year) and fully functional, if you've never
installed Red Hat Linux before you might want to go with Red Hat Linux
9. It's also available via a free download.

> When installing, do I just boot it off CD and install?

Yup. The installation guide is on the documentation CD. If you've
never read it, now's your chance.

> Or are there any other configs that needs to be done?

You need to read the Installation Guide. It's also on Red Hat's web
site. Asking questions here is not a replacement for reading the
published vendor documentation. If you're read the guide and still have
questions, then by all means ask specific questions.

The images are complete and ready to go. You do not need any compilers
to complete the installation.

Was it reported "open" or "filtered"? The latter will happen if you

I have read that you can use an existing BIND DNS implementation for MS
Active Directory. I know that in order to support the MS AD the DNS server
must support SRV & DDNS? I am aware that BIND supports these in the new
version, however; I have never had the opportunity to set it up until now.
I am having some problems finding documentation on these features. Does
anyone know how to setup Bind to support AD?

RE: delaying eth0 initialization

Hi
Bapi

I am
sorry..I dont mean to frustrate you...I am just a newbie at this aspect of

the
issues that I am seeing, and what is confusing me, is that, checking the

checking the .etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file, the file is configured for
dhcp,...
and doing an ifup and ifdown gives me the

doing
an lsmod command, I do not see the module loaded at all..

I will
have to play around with it a bit more..

  An addendum:
You can edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file, if you need to
and then do ifdown ifcfg-eth0 and ifup ifcfg-eth0. Then start network service.

I don't understand why you cannot compile. If you had the kernel sources
and headers, you should be able to compile modules with the options I
suggested. You may have to play with it a little bit to include the
correct libraries you need to compile the module. If lsmod lists your
module, then it's in resident kernel memory and it's already loaded. If you
alias the device in modules.conf, and that module is loaded at boot time,
your card should work, provided, of course, your module is not messed up in
any way.
Please do ifconfig eth0 [ipaddr] and then do ifconfig -a to see what's up
there?
Also check /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-eth0 and /etc/sysconfig/network to see
networking is enabled.
If you can't compile the driver source, please try to get one from the
card manufacturer's website.

You just need to have the kernel headers installed, and if you got
the kernel source, good enough. Try the following:
-D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -DLINUX -O -Wall -I/usr/include/ -D__KERNEL__
-DMODULE -DLINUX -O -Wall -I/usr/include/linux/modversions.h
If it still complains, get rid of the modversions.h. Make sure you
have the most recent gnu c compiler.

You just need to have the kernel headers installed, and if you got the
kernel source, good enough. Try the following:
  -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -DLINUX -O -Wall -I/usr/include/ -D__KERNEL__
  -DMODULE -DLINUX -O -Wall -I/usr/include/linux/modversions.h
If it still complains, get rid of the modversions.h. Make sure you have the
  most recent gnu c compiler.

Anonmous ftp is always better. Get the right driver for your type of card
and compile it. You can install the kernel-headers and kernel-source rpms for
your kernel type, if you don't have them already. Please compile using gcc
with the correct optimization and the includes. That's exactly the way I
  configured my tulip driver.
Finally you must do ifconfig to get it working.

Do an ifconfig -a to see what is there. Run netconfig to ensure you
haven't set any arbitrary IRQ or MEM. Perhaps your driver is just messed
up. In that case, simply get the source code for the driver of your
card from the manufacturer's website and compile it directly in your
kernel (I guess you have the kernel hdrs). Then do cp -f new_driver.o
/lib/modules/2.4.X/kernel/drivers/. After that do insmod or modprobe to load
  the new module.
You can get excellent driver sources from http://scyld.com. There are some
utility tools there like mii-diag and pci-config that you can use
  too.

Several things you need to check:
  1. Do not set IRQ or MEM in netconfig.
  2. If you wish, set IRQ to AUTO in BIOS. Let the system pick it up.
  3. Check the driver exists in /lib/modules/kernel_version/kernel/drivers/
  4. If insmod gives dependency errors, try modprobe instead.
Do lsmod to find out if the module is already loaded. If it is, do rmmod first
and reload using the above commands.
  5. Check the ifcfg-eth0 file.
If it works, you still need to do ifconfig and then modify the kernel
routing table (for routing things of course).
  Hope this helps.

1. Does the command "lsmod" show the 3c59x module already installed?

2. If it isn't shown, have you tried "modprobe 3c59x" to try loading it?

3. Does /var/log/messages or /var/log/dmesg (or just the command "dmesg"
show any errors associated with the card?

4. Does /proc/interrupts show the board? If this one fails, you'll need
to check and make sure the board is seated. It could also indicate the
board is bad. If the machine can't see it, there's nothing that will
make in work.

With versions up to 7.2 I've been able to shut down, remove the board,
reboot, remove configuration, shut down, insert the board, reboot and
configure networking with some success.

With 7.2, 7.3, the 8.0 betas and 8.0 I've had luck running kudzu
manually and configuring things. Unfortunately, this only worked when I
had it shut off during boot and had new hardware. When it was already
running at boot time, it wouldn't succeed at finding new hardware. I
doubt this case fits yours, but if it does, you can try that as well.

Does the real file have execute permissions?

By default, CGI scripts are only run the the ScriptAlias directory, which
defaults to DocumentRoot/cgi-bin. Is your httpd.conf set tpo allow CGI
script to run in DocumentRoot?

Yes. Something is wrong with the script that's generating the page. Look

It's not that simple. For starters, RH box is too vague. The issue here
is you probably want Samba to authenticate against a domain, so you need to
focus on Samba, not Red Hat Linux. Unless, of course, you want to
authenticate
all your user logons against a domain, in which case you've got multiple
issues
and not all can be solved with the release of Samba shipping with Red Hat
Linux 7.2.

I suggest you start by going to http://www.samba.org and reviewing the docs
there. Depending on what you want to do, you may need to upgrade Samba to
the
latest release. I don't even know if Red Hat has made the latest Samba
available in Rawhide yet.

It is frequently true that what is the optimum location for data is
not a convenient location for the human or the system. Symbolic links
allow as many paths of access to data as you find convenient, and also
provide device independence for filesystems, allowing you to place
data where there is room for it, and place a pointer to it where users
(or the system) expect it to be.

If you're familiar with Microsoft Windows, you may consider symlinks
roughly analogous to shortcuts. However, Windows shortcuts are not as
flexible as Unix symlinks. Windows shortcuts are exclusively for the
human interface; system processes will not transparently follow them
to a target.

path = /home/public
readonly = no
guestok = yes

But there are other questions to ask first, such as
have  you read the info on the samba website? www.samba.org there's a lot of
help to be had there.
have you made sure samba is running?
have you tried to access your shares with smbclient?
have you made sure the LAN machines can talk to each other via tcpip (e.g. via
ping)?
have you tried accessing a WIndows share on the linux box? that can actually be
an easier task, which will help you build some familiarity.

Send me your smb.conf privately, and I will take a look at it.

julian.

Hello Listees,

With a little help from Peter, I got it working. For the benefit of other
people who have not set up a loadable kernel module for networking, here's
the steps I took for my 3Com card:

1. added "alias eth0 3c59x" to /etc/modules.conf
2. ran the command "insmod 3c59x"
3. used netconfig to setup the IP address
4. changed the HOSTNAME value in /etc/sysconfig/network to my computer name
(host.mydomain.com)
5. cd /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts
6. ran "ifup eth0"
7. ping -c 4 www.yahoo.com

Hope this helps someone else.

Thanks again Peter for restoring my sanity!

Can you manually set it up with the 3c59x (Vortex/Boomerang) driver?

That's what worked for me on an OptiPlex GX1.

Monte,
I have found your comparison excellent, as I have just come from SuSE,
and have been there quite awhile, though various upgrades. I have found
several RPMs built for RH to work quite nicely in SuSE without any
problems.

One of the biggest differences that I see, is the absolutely astounding
documentation supplied by SuSE, as they include several books with the
distros, covering just about everything, They even have a manual for
networking. I must admit, I am getting addicted to the RHN though.

I find RH somewhat "smoother" for a lack of a better term, and gives me
faster disk I/O.

The two distributions have somewhat different layouts as far as some of
the system files, which means that about half the time, RPMs from one
won't work on the other.

SuSE has a fairly well-developed, but proprietary, system admin took
called yast. The original yast1 is a terminal program, i.e. it has menus,
but is called from a command line and works the same from an xterm as it
does from a console w/ no X. The newer yast2 has a text mode and a GUI
mode (qt/kde). Somewhat more asthetically appealing, but currently much
slower. These tools are at the core of any system administration on a
SuSE system, and the values modified w/ them are stored in a large file,
/etc/rc.config, although a few others are utilized as well for specialized
setting such as firewalls. RedHat has not real centralized tool on this
scale (think /sbin/setup to a power of 3), and stores the settings
scattered around the /etc/sysconfig directory, among other places. The
yast1/2 tools also provide an interface to LVM setup and admin. SuSE
provides a couple of firewall tools, and has been for at least a year
before Red Hat. There is the personal_firewall, which is basically for a
dialup/cablemodem user offering no services to anyone, and then there is
SuSEFirewall 1 & 2, for ipchains and iptables, respectively. Also there
are several included security scripts for checking things like the /tmp
directory, etc. Not essential, but a nice touch.

SuSE comes w/ more software initially; 6 CDs/ 1 DVD, and the yast tools
are w/o peer in the rpm world for managing these vendor supplied packages.
They fall down when you start adding in other packages from other
sources. Which brings us to one of the big weak spots of SuSE: lack of
software on the internet. What I mean by this, is if you go to about any
opensource project, if there are binaries availabe, there will likely be
RPMs among them. RPMs built w/ a RH system in mind, not a SuSE box.
Pretty much your only choice at that point is to download the source, and
eithe just compile it and hope it doesn't have problems w/ the rest of
your system, or build an RPM of it and install it. Otherwise, you are
largely limited to whatever version of package foo comes on the install
media.

Both vendors have online update programs: Red Hat has the Red Hat Network
(RHN), and SuSE has Yast Online Update (YOU). Red Hat's is free for one
machine, even those built w/ a non boxed version i.e. burn CD of RH,
though there are ways around it for those of us w/ a home network. YOU is
only available w/ SuSE, which is not available for free for i386, period.
But once you have a legit copy, you can install it on any number of
machines, and each one can fully use YOU w/o need for hokey workarounds.
Six of one, half a dozen of another.

Both companies heavily subsidize the Open Source community in the way of
kernel developers and other programmers. Red Hat backs the GNOME project
and several kernel developers (Alan Cox, IIRC); SuSE backs KDE and kernel
developers like Andrea Archangeli (sp?), and Hans Reiser of ReiserFS fame.
Red Hat has a somewhat better 'history' of open-sourcing their
install/admin tools, whereas SuSE maintains a deathgrip on their
install/admin tool yast, to the point of not putting forth a GPL version
of SuSE for places like CheapBytes to distribute, since it would
supposedly threaten their business model as yast1/2 are proprietary. Red
Hat isn't completely innocent about the free CD thing lately, but for
different reasons.

SuSE over all seems a little more polished, and, well, coherent as a total
package. There is a string, though. Deviation from the 'SuSE way' can be
quite painful, as their tools and methods permeate the distro extensively.
Red Hat is a little more of a 'generic' distro; more of a jack of all
trades, master of none. I'd venture to guess that SuSE has moderately
better hardware detection/support, and could possible be a bit better
choice as a new users' desktop system (almost as friendly as Mandrake, but
not as flaky).

Just my $.02 worth, after using both distros for several years now, since
5.0 of RH and 5.3 of SuSE.

HTH,

Monte

For the automatic startup of service daemons to occur, the proper setup
must be done in /etc/rc.d/init.d Use chkconfig to see if this has been
done (it is likely it hasn't).

chkconfig --list | more

look for vncserver. you will want to start it up in at least run states 3
and 5, i would assume.

chkconfig --level 345 vncserver on

will enable vncserver to be started up automagically.
also, the proper links, etc will be set in /etc/rc.d/init.d so that the
service command for starting/stopping vncserver can be used (also
/etc/rc.d/init.d/vncserver start|stop|restart|status will work)

So, does vncserver show up in chkconfig --list ?

Subject:Vncserver management

I have a quick question. Has anybody successfully used the vncserver
script in /etc/rc.d/init.d (or `server vncserver start`) on RedHat 7.2?

I can execute it, and will get the action feedback:

Starting VNC server: [ OK ]

But, a `ps ax | grep vnc` produces no pids. And `serice vncserver
status` reports

Xvnc is stopped

However, if I manually run `vncserver` and then run `service vncserver
status` it will give me a pid. I can then connect, using port 5901 (I
remember this from using vnc in the past), and also wondered where to
change this.

The last thing, is `service vncserver stop` will NOT kill the pid, and
clean up the tmp screen in /tmp/.X1-lock. I have to remove file
manually, or the next server will run on 5902, 5903, etc.

I only want to open up one port through my iptables set, so it would be
nice if I could manage this process properly. The biggest problem
though, is that if the machine restarts, vncserver is not running. I
have to add an entry to rc.local, but then it will be running on the
next avaiable screen.

Any help is appreciated.

Although we are using an HP UX system, I thought I might post it here, since
I know there are tons of info here, and please forgive me for doing so...:)

I am in a quandary here.

We have an HP UX as our DNS server.

Recently, about 2 days ago, I started noticing something wrong with the SAM
tool.
Meaning, after adding a user in SAM, I would go back to the passwd file and
see that all of the users' home directories and login shells have been
deleted.

Could it be a Trojan of some kind?

We checked for a shadow file and we did not see any at all..

Any help will be appreciated...:)

You have a space between the dash and "I". Try:

rpm -i

of

rpm --install

but I usually do:

rpm -Uvh

-Pete

P.S.: Oh and don't use a capitol "R" either when doing "rpm".
