Try recompiling the kernel with Local APIC support turned OFF
(assuming you don't have an SMP machine).

I would suggest that you try some other card before actually buying a
new card because the problem might not be in the NIC.

RTL8139 issue

2003-03-28 Thread Bored is me
ok, i turned it on and off again, still nothing!

how do i 'recompile the kernel with Local APIC support turned OFF'?

i found this on a site: (so its not a modem, but it might work the same way)

Plug And Play (PnP) Modems
Most modems today are PnP and most will (with some effort) work with Linux.
It's best to get one that has jumpers (shunts) to disable PnP. In many
cases, if you simply set the jumpers for a certain COM number and IRQ
number, this will disable PnP. You may also want (need ??) to disable PnP in
your computer's BIOS. If you can't disable PnP then you may try:

Boot Win95/98, configure the modem, and see if the settings are preserved
when you boot Linux. If not, then:

Boot Win95/98, configure the modem, and then warm boot Linux so that the
settings are preserved. You can do this with the loadlin boot loader

can i have a little more detail on how to 'warm boot' linux?

and then i found something about forced hardware, where i force it to update
the ESCD with windows, but the 'Use automatic settings' for it couldnt be
enabled or disabled. i was thinking along the lines of, if i can go into
linux, and fill in a bunch of information about it that i got from windows,
it might 'force update' it.

i also noticed, that when it does the PnP part of the boot, it doesnt
mention anything about the NIC, just my crappy sound card, so it may not be
the PnP! *is getting close to frusterated*

RTL8139 issue (i figured out something!)

2003-03-28 Thread Bored is me
ok, i filled in my IP, Subnet, and default gateway, and it lets me activate
the device! (and it works when it boots too) unfortunatly, its still not
working, i get no light on the card, and i cant access any web pages. It
doesnt matter if i fill in anything about the IRQ or memory or I/O or not.
it was having a problem with DHCP. if i switch to another thing, like bootp
or dialup, DHCP is greyed out, but i can still select it. Do i have to fill
in some stuff about it, or what?

To explain PNP in detail would require more info than an e-mail is practical

If you get into your BIOS configuration, there should be an option to
disable PNP OS - sometimes PNP being enabled will cause problems with
the kernel - and with devices such as network cards or sound cards (and
more)...so by disabling PNP OS in BIOS, you might find that some devices
work that otherwise would not with the PNP OS enabled...

If it's already turned off, turn it on again and reboot to see if the
NIC starts up...

RTL8139 issue

2003-03-26 Thread Bored is me
ok, i moved it to a different PCI slot, nothing (i didnt think it would
help, it works fine on xp, so its not a hardware thing)

this is the contents of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eht0:
(and im mildly surprised that it printed)
(comments unimportant)
USERCTL=no
PEERDNS=yes
TYPE=Ethernet
DEVICE=eth0
HWADDR=00:e0:29:95:97:85
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes
(so obviously im using dhcp) I have shaw cable internet, and its directly to
the internet.

i never really did set up the card, it was recognized in my network
configuration

ifup eth0 gives me this:
Determining IP information for eth0... Failed; no link present. Check cable?
(yes, it is connected, im not that stupid)
when i do lsmod, i get a module called either rtl8139too or it could have
been just 8139too (should there have been and 8139cp as well?)
modprobe 8130cp didnt work, so i assumed it should have been 8139cp, that
gave me some errors about it not being found, i think.
modprobe 8139too gave me absolutly nothing.

Sounds right. I would try commenting out the HWADDR line and reboot.
This is only because I mistrust anything I don't understand :) and I
have never figured out why this would be necessary although I sure there
is an application for it.

then look in /var/log messages for anything eth related:

grep eth /var/log/messages

should get you close.

Do you get a link light on the card?

Re: RTL8139 issue

2003-03-25 Thread Joe Polk
How are you trying to activate it?

When you reboot, you should see a line Starting eth0 during the section
where all the daemons start (charactarized by all the green OK's you
see). Do you see eth0 starting OK? or FAILED? Let us know. Also give us
some idea of what kinda system you're running.

post the steps you are using to activate it and the messages you get
back and someone can possibly help. was the card recognized by kudzu
(hardware detection)?

Re: RTL8139 issue

2003-03-25 Thread Willi Mann
Try (as root)

lsmod (look if a kernel module containing 8139 is listed - if not)
modprobe 8130cp
modprobe 8130too - if one of the last works it's your setup that makes
problems. (try the setup command at command line)

Post a short summary about what you did to setup your card and include
the error messages which occur!

Please let me know if you got it working!

I have RTL8139 card from Surecom which I could not get working at all
UNTIL I moved it to another PCI slot - it seems the card could not work in
the slot I put it initially into;
Since I have moved it to another PCI slot it work flawlessly.

I have ABIT motherboard (Intel 440BX based).

Could you possibly try to insert the card into some other PCI slot
and check whether this helps?

Best regards,

Wojtek
