[Repeater-Builder] Dayton 2010

2010-05-19 Thread Mark
Well, the dust is finally settling, and I am beginning to recover from
another fun-filled weekend at Dayton.

No, I didn't spend a whole lot of money, but I did find some items that were
absolute must haves for the shack.

I just wanted to say it was great to finally put an eyeball on some of the
people with whom I've been communicating with via the lists for several
years now, and reacquainting myself with those whom I've met in the past. I
also made some wonderful new friends - some who thing I am the go to guy
for their projects. I hope I can live up to their expectations.

Thanks all. Here's to a great year at Dayton, and I'm looking forward
already to next year!

73,

Mark - N9WYS

[Repeater-Builder] Dayton to Evansville, IN

2010-05-11 Thread Jeff DePolo

Leaving for Dayton tomorrow morning (weather forecast has improved a bit,
looks like both Saturday and Sunday will be decent). After Dayton I'm
headed to Evansville, IN. Any repeater-builders out there with machines
between Dayton and Evansville (via Cincinnati and Louisville - I-75, I-71,
I-64)? Got a new truck in March and still haven't had time to put the
stack in, so will just have 2m and 440 this trip.

I won't be there, so everybody have fun keep your vehicles locked.

As far as repeaters go, my area favorite is the WB8VSU 442.300 (+) 123.0
Miamisburg system. Has IRLP (node 4235) I've been told it now makes it
down to Cincinnati.

Our usual clan which includes a number of repeater-builder denizens will be
in 2370 et al, at the end of a row. Come by for free 807's and bring lots
of money to buy stuff, nothing I bring to sell is coming back home with me
this year...

Long-range forecast for Dayton doesn't look all that great, Sunday looks
like the nicest day. The best deals are to be had in the rain!

Great Radio for its day and probably still quite usable for
some ham project (the version that looks like a GE Mobile) but
at that price I'm sure he took them back home or they went into

Not as bad as the $200 75 watt UHF Mastr II mobile. It did have a UHS

A lot of people made me feel bad when I told them I wanted $300.00 for my 75
watt Mastr II repeater station (not a mobile) complete with Wacom duplexer
and multi-CTCSS tone panel! Heck, I could not sell a working RCA 700
desktop repeater ready to go on 444.975 for 50 bucks! I don't know what
these people wanted. I think most wanted me to give them the equipment and
pay them to haul it off.

A foreign type guy wanted to buy a test cable for $5.00, I said no, that
would be like giving it away. He then offered to buy two for 15, said no
again. I did come down a lot on some things but for the most part I held
firm like on the repeaters.A guy told me he bought a Micor complete with
a duplexer for 100 bucks, I am sure he did. I have been given a lot of
equipment like that but it does not mean I am going to give it away when I
haul it that far. I would rather bring it back home and I did.

The funny thing, I sold the GE Mastr II to a fellow club member here in
Texas so I had to bring it back anyway! I still have a lot of GE and
Motorola UHF base stations for sale, guess I will try Belton, Texas in the
fall if fuel is not 10 bucks a gallon!

I had heard about the TAC200 that the problem was inferior quality control on
the incoming parts and the failure rate on some capacitors was terrible. I had
experienced that particular problem. They were similiar to the Mastr II but
the board layout was reversed left to right and so on. Worked on quite a few

  Hello All,

I guess everyone knows the history of the Tac Tec RCA radio? That
radio single handed put RCA out of business. The engineers apparently copied
the GE Mastr II radios almost verbatim and GE took them to court and won, bye
bye RCA

Like you said, they looked like GE's, small wonder

Hello All,
nbsp;
I guess everyone knows the history of the Tac Tec RCA radio?nbsp;
That radio single handed put RCA out of business.nbsp; The engineers
apparently
copied the GE Mastr II radios almost verbatim and GE took them to court and
won,nbsp;bye bye RCA

Like you said, they looked like GE's, small

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Dayton 2008 Chuckle (Tac-Tec - humor)

2008-05-23 Thread Jim Brown
Hey Skip,. don't bad mouth my RCA Tac Tec (VeeTAC) repeater. It has been in
service for almost 20 years now. I bought several of them for scrap by the
pound, and they had been thrown out of the back of a truck. Fins broken and
pretty well beat up, but they still worked.

Only problem I had with it was when the wood ants got into it and glued the
chassis to the wood shelf I had it on. They also covered over all the lands on
the boards that had voltage on them.

They finally caused some strange noises on the repeater and I was surprised
that I could not pry the VeeTac off the shelf. That one went in the trash,
needless to say. And a healthy (maybe unhealthy) dose of insect killer was
sprayed around the wooden pole the repeater is mounted on.

The cotton pickin ants finally ate the center out of the creasote pole and it
blew over in a high wind - broke off at the base. Only cost our club insurance
$7,000 to replace the fence and the corner of the telephone building it took
out. Also took out the power, and their backup generator did not work, so we
got taxed for the emergency service call to restore power.

The ants can be as bad as the mice on another thread - HI.

[Repeater-Builder] Dayton Hamvention Shipping (the easy way...)

2008-04-27 Thread skipp025
Dayton Hamvention Shipping (the easy way...)

I've found the easy way to deal with sending things back from
Dayton. Take shipping tape, pre-made address labels and related
items with you.

Box up whatever you want to send back... drive to the nearby
Airport Fed Ex Office and send everything back to yourself
Fed-Ex Ground. Use your own account if you have one.

I do it every time... works great. Later in the week when I'm
back to ground zero nice boxes of boat anchor stuff and toys
arrive without fail.

cheers,
s.

[Repeater-Builder] Dayton Tickets and Fleamarket

2008-04-23 Thread Walter Klinger
Good Evening to the list:

I was wondering if anyone got their Dayton fleamarket passes and tickets as
yet?

I order our club's usual order in February. I still haven't gotten a
response from DARA as of yet. I sent two emails and made two phone calls.
Never got a response.

Two years ago it was so messed up that I had to pick up my order on Thursday
afternoon at the fleamarket trailer, and run around like crazy to distribute
our ticket order.

Last year I couldn't go to Dayton and I was out of the country on family
business from 3-19 May. I had to do some fast and fancy negotiation to get our
500 dollar order re-routed to another club member otherwise it would have sat
in USPS mail will-call until I returned!

Needless to say, I am a little edgy this year. It doesn't help that I get no
responses to my emails and calls.

I appreciate any responses to my query.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Dayton Tickets and Fleamarket

2008-04-23 Thread Paul Finch
No response from phone calls or emails have been very noticeable by everyone
that has tried to contact the committees. If you did contact them they
would say they would get someone to call back, never happened. I called
several times and no answer and a guy that is going with us took over
ordering the spaces. As of a email yesterday they said anything ordered
before April 1st went out in the mail yesterday so look for it shortly.

Like I said yesterday I think, 4 years ago I called on the phone, 10 minutes
later I had my spaces assigned and was set for the show. This year is very
different. With the price we have to pay for the spaces it looks like there
should be at least some semblance of customer service.

I hope they learn from this year and do a better job of this next year.
With the price of spaces and Diesel fuel it is going to be hard enough to
make it this year, with the fuel price increases they want the rest of this
year and next this year may be my last for Dayton.

... they seem to most often be semi upwind from Kevin/Ken's area.

Since the topic came up, Repeater-Builder, as a company, will NOT be making
an official showing at this year's Hamvention. Kevin is working full-time at
his job, and a Dayton booth is a lot for my wife and I to handle with a 4
year old and a 18 month old. (children, not radios)

While it is definitely nice to see all the guys and chew the fat, the last
time we made the Dayton adventure we lot our shirt. 'Till you figure that
the two weeks leading up to the show are spent preparing, and the 2 weeks
after are spent recovering; you have lost a month's worth of bench / family
time. This does not include the $70 per space cost or the absorbent hotel
rates for the weekend. *IF* the weather is good, you *MAY* just enjoy
yourself. too many variables for me.

My wife and I do plan on attending the show as spectators. Since my wife is
from the Indianapolis area, we simply drive to my in-laws place on Thursday
and hand off the kids. We wake up on Friday morning, leisurely drive the 1
1/2hrs. to Dayton, and enjoy the show. The grandparents have a great time
playing with the kids, and everyone is happy!!

It's hard to say exactly where you might find us at the show, but for those
who would like to have an eyeball, e-mail me and I can provide my cell
number or a frequency we may be monitoring and we can make arrangements to
meet that way.

I hope to run into some list members at the show. I'll have my RB hat on!!

[Repeater-Builder] Dayton whale tales 101

2008-04-19 Thread skipp025
Re: Dayton whale tales 101

I've noticed a guy selling surplus commercial radio
gear at Dayton pretty much every year I've attended.
A few years back the mentioned surplus Dealer had a
large surplus Motorola MSR-2000 Repeater for sale out
front of his flea market area.

I was side-tracked and never made it back to try and
make a deal for that box. I missed buying the repeater
the first year I noticed it.

Whoa..! the following year the same guy in the same
place had much the same gear for sale. He didn't want
to budge much on what I thought was a pretty high asking
price. I figured I'd come back on Sunday and to try and
make a better deal. He closed up his booth and left
before I was able to return from my Hamvention Duties.

:-(

Year #3, he's still in the same location and guess what..?
That surplus MSR-2000 repeater is still out front at the
same high price. By that time I've been able to find
other surplus MSR-2000 gear so I'm no longer a serious
buyer for retail prices.

I missed year #4 (last year) but I'm looking forward to
visiting with my old friend to see if he's now willing
to make a deal in year #5.

cheers,
s.

ps: Just think of how much gas that guy has spent moving
that box 2 States over to Dayton each year. Not to mention
the other 3 surplus micor repeaters around it...

small group of hams out there that enjoy showing off their valuble stuff
at these events. (Value is in the eye of the beholder). I recently
helped toss some of this stuff into a dumpster at a silent keys home.
It was always too valuable for him to sell for a cheap price.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Dayton whale tales 101

2008-04-19 Thread Paul Finch
Joe,

Same thing happened to me with some Johnson 559 mobile radios, that's all I
use on my Ham UHF repeaters. I went in one day and found a stack of five
radios and base. Looked to have been there a long time! I went up and made
an offer of what I had been getting them for at Hamfests and he really got
mad. He yelled at me and said, I paid over 800 Bucks each for those radios
20 years ago and you want to come in and steal them? I said, never mind
and walked out.

About two years ago the guy passed away and the radios were still there,
from what I understand everything went in a dumpster.

Re: [Repeater-Builder] Dayton whale tales 101

2008-04-19 Thread Ron Wright
Skipp,

I see some dealers at Hamfest with high prices. The ones I know go mainly to
meet other dealers and people with commercial gear. They are not really there
to sell things except at commercial pricing. They are real wheelers and
dealers.

MSR2000s, VHF UHF, are popping up all over for $300-400. There were a number
at the Orlando Hamfest last Feb. Very good radio and worth this price. I
think it is the best going for a Ham repeater. Like the Micor use to be and
really still is. MSF5000 would be the next upgrade choice.

[Repeater-Builder] Dayton and Parts you might need....

2008-04-01 Thread Paul Finch
Hello All,

I will be traveling to Dayton with an enclosed trailer full of parts and
pieces. I have a couple Mastr II UHF 100 watt base stations, some Micor VHF
and UHF stations (unknown power), Motorola Service manuals, 6 foot GE Mastr
II and Quintron cabinets (cheap) GE (grey) voting cages, Motorola Test bench
metering panels with all sorts of test cables, some Motorola NOS parts, Mot
boards, and way to many other parts and pieces to mention here. LOT's of
STUFF, just ask.

Send me an email with what you need and I will check to see if I have it.
On the cabinets, I have several these that I can take but they take a lot of
room in the trailer. I will only take them to Dayton if someone expresses
an interest in them and is willing to make a good will down payment mailed
to me on the cabinets at least two weeks before I leave for Dayton. They are
just to big and take up too much room in the trailer only to bring them
back.

Once I have them at Dayton and the deal is complete and the cabinet changing
hands I will refund 1/2 of the good will payment of $50.00. That means the
cabinet would only be 25 bucks. Pretty good price if you ask me.

Only the large items like cabinets require pre-payment.

Jeff,

From what I have seen so far they are very slow and seem unorganized this
year. About three years ago I called and it was all set up, this year I
called several times with no answer on the phone. Got a call finally from
one of the chairmen saying he would have the Flea guy call that weekend, no
call so far and that been at least three weeks.

We finally reserved the spaces on-line about two weeks ago, got a automated
response but nothing since. I know they are volunteers but it's not being
handled very well this year, at least that's my impression.

Well, ain't that a crock! I went on their web site last week and the
tickets section wasn't even up yet - you couldn't order anything, nor did
it say anything about a February 15 deadline! I went on today and now see I

2007-05-14 Thread Scott Zimmerman
All,

Re: Repeater-Builder at Dayton 2007

Unfortunately, Repeater-Builder will not be vending our normal wares at this
year's show. Kevin W3KKC has work commitments that take priority. I felt that
with my 5 month old and three year old daughters, my wife and I couldn't
provide the 1 on 1 attention that a show like Dayton demands. I apologize to
anyone that was looking forward to stopping by and saying HI in person.

My wife Elisha and I will be attending the show. We will both be there on
Friday. I *may* decide to make the return trip on Saturday to see what the
crowd looks like. I am planning to have an HT with me on 146.625 simplex. If
anyone would like to talk to me, give a call and we can get together.

As always, we are still building and taking orders for repeaters:
www.repeater-builder.com/custombuilt
We have Tram antennas for sale as well as the other custom Repeater-Builder
products: www.repeater-builder.com/products

At this point we are planning to attend next year's show with our typical 4
spots in the outside fleamarket area. By next year, the kids will be older and
hopefully more easily contained by chicken wire and electric fence. HIHI

I wish everyone safe travels and a great show!!!

Did get to play around on 900 Mhz, amazing how much better 900 covers
inside (playing AEGIS was cool too). But it was also amazing how well
the RB rptr worked a ways off grounds. With our mobile rig, 15W and an
on-glass MFJ, I first brought it up, noisy, near WPAFB on I-70...DFQ at
our hotel in Englewood...what does that say?

[Repeater-Builder] Dayton Hamfest

2006-05-20 Thread Don
For us who did not get to go I got this info from a Friend , some
might Enjoy checking it out.

Enjoy Don KA9QJG

Live streaming video from Dayton hamfest http://wa5kub.com

Streaming video and audio from Hamvention 2006 http://wa5kub.com
This will be our 4th year of broadcasting live video of our drive to
Hamvention (550 miles) and then the three days outside in the
fleamarket.

This year the helmet cam will be back. It will let people around the
world get a view of all the things we look at as we walk around.

The streaming cam page also has its own chat room and hams from
around the world watched, chatted, and enjoyed it the past 3 years.

There are no pop-ups or advertisements. Just something we like to do
each year and have fun. It lets hams take part in ham radio if they
are too far away to travel or health does not permit it.

Please spread the word to other hams and ham clubs.
The more people we have on, the more fun we will have.

Streaming Webcast Schedule

We will be broadcasting from the beginning until the end of the show
each day Friday May 20th through Sunday May 22th from our outside
fleamarket spaces 3350-3351. Please come by and say hello and wave to
your loved ones back home.

NEW THIS YEAR !!
Watch for the 'Helmet Cam'. You will be able to see what we see as we
walk around in the fleamarket.

Also watch for us as we convoy from Memphis, Tn to Dayton, Oh. on
WEDNESDAY May 17th and set up our fleamarket space on Thursday May
18th.. This is a 550 mile drive and will take us about 10 hours.

We will depart Memphis about 8:00 am CST and arrive Dayton about 7:00
pm EST. This will be our fourth year to broadcast the drive live.
Chat with us on the chat screen as we drive. Hams from around the
world followed our trip and chatted with us last year. Watch us and
try to guess where we are.

After hamvention, we will be broadcasting our drive back home. Watch
for us Sunday May 21th from about 1:00 pm until about 9:00pm CST.

The link is http://wa5kub.com

The site is up and running today and will be on 24 by 7 from now
until Hamvention. Please visit it, log in and chat with us and others
as we test it. We need you to help stress test it.

We have recorded video running on it at the present but will switch
over to live video when we start our trip.

Video clips running now are the Tonight show CW vs Text Messaging,
news clips of us from local tv stations, The Hamband (A video of a
ham in a tux and top hat singing a ham song while hanging on his
tower at 100 feet, Storm chaser videos, and ICOM videos that were
taken at Hamvention over a couple years.

[Repeater-Builder] Dayton Hamvention space - ticket Information

2006-05-10 Thread skipp025
A number of you have been emailing me off the list about
your Dayton Hamvention Space(s) Tickets. I emailed my friend
behind the scenes about people reporting their tickets not yet
received. He replied with the following information. Please
don't email me past this point. I really want to drop out
of the loop, but I'm trying to be helpful to those of you
who are worried about your Dayton trip. I of course will
see you there. Onward...

[paste]

Any orders received after 5/2 will be held at the F/M
office. That being said, there will be a drive through
pickup window as in past years to speed up that process.

Here is the contact info.

Try 937-276-6933 to start. That number should be answered
by someone who can advise status of spaces, and whether
packet was mailed or held.

If result is unsatisfactory or complex questions involved,
937-276-6932 will ring the Flea Market chairman's cell
phone directly.

Of course, we do not take this situation lightly, and everyone
up to the General Chairman is very unhappy about the way
things have been handled. In our 55 or so years of putting
on this show, we have been proud of our efforts to communicate
with our visitors, and realize that this is a major blemish
on our reputation. The GC has indicated that it WILL NOT be
tolerated next year.

Regards,

[end paste]

So there you go...
cheers,
s.

At a minimum, there should be an exception for clubs. One club I belong to
recently cleaned out its shack sold the excess at the local swap

I would agree with that, although there would need to be something in
place to verify it's a real club and not just something someone made up.
Sorta like many of the 'clubs' that show up next to a repeater entry in
the ARRL directory.

  Hi Skipp...
The pricing scheme for flea market spaces had been in place for
many, many years, and is intended to discourage the larger
vendors from hogging all the spaces, while keeping things less
expensive for the guy who just wants to sell a few things he's
had lying about in his shack. Interestingly enough, the average
vendor buys just over two spaces ( kinda like the average American
family has 2.4 kids!). Also, this means that the vendors who
buy a lot of spaces, and generally require a bit more attention
and effort from the committee, pick up their share of the costs.

The comment about the 2-way shops is pretty astute, and is also
true for the build-your-own computer parts places, who have a
tough time competing with a $400 pre-assembled PC.

There is also the e-bay factor, although that seems to work both
ways, as I have had several people tell me they buy things there
for the purpose of bringing them to Dayton to resell.

The right place to go for information is [EMAIL PROTECTED],
but if that isn't getting any response, send a message to chair@
hamvention.org (and a copy to [EMAIL PROTECTED], the asst. GC). That's the
big boss, and he doesn't like it when inquiries go unanswered. He
has the power to make heads roll.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger! I sent a email requesting an explanation
for their weird price schedule, not a single word! I have since decided I

the only explanation I have gotten so far and that was not from the
Hamvention people.

Has anyone received anything yet?

This will be my 17th year at Dayton. For at least the last 10 years
we've always had the same fleamarket spaces. Last year, we didn't get
our fleamarket tickets or entrance tickets. I called, faxed, emailed,
probably ten times, and it wasn't until the Monday before the event that
I got a call-back saying that they were having problems getting tickets
out in time, and that I'd have to pick them up at the fest on Thursday
when I got there.

This year, I didn't even receive the usual sign-up package which usually
came in December in previous years. I called, faxed, emailed, and never
heard back. Finally I gave up and downloaded the forms from their web
site, filled them out, and faxed them in. I still don't know whether or
not they received it or processed it.

Dayton is always a good time, even in the years with lousy weather, but
they need to make some improvements in the customer service side of
things...

It never ceases to amaze me, how the dayton is moving rumor
mutates and spreads around.

The owner's of Hara have no intention of selling, nor the does
the Hamvention organization want to leave. I bumped into some
folks last Dayton (litterally) who were (are) hara folks. Hara is
doing at least OK; take a look at their wenb site: they have 8
events for April taking up 14 days. Thats not bad at all for such
a place.

The best way to make Dayton continue is to get new folks down
there. My wife and I have been averaging one person per year for
the last several years now, with two getting their licenses there.
We did some volunteer stuff last year, and I think it was obvious,
the commitment they had to improving the show. We plan on
doing that again this year.
