Re: [scifinoir2] Forest Whitaker To Do 'MAMBO'

2007-09-13 Thread KeithBJohnson
Never read Minority Report's source material. How did the ending stray (though
from what I know about the author, I'd guess it was pretty bleak in the book).
I see your point in some cases. "A.I." was damn near brilliant until that god
awful ending. And I loved "War of the Worlds" in so many ways--the alien
walkers were terrifying, emitting a sound almost as scary as the Shadows on B5.
But they ruined the movie for me by insisting on including kids, which
destroyed the whole thing.

Same thing with everything Spielberg touches post Close Encounters -- the
ending. Nothing is as bad an ending as "A.I.", to be sure, but Minority
Report could have stayed a little truer to the book for me.

September 12, 2007 - TV Guide is reporting that Buffy the Vampire Slayer
and Angel alumni Charisma Carpenter will be one of the contestants on
the upcoming celebrity edition of Donald Trump's The Apprentice,
according to reliable sources. NBC hasn't officially announced any of
the casting, but TV Guide also says there are rumors that Carmen Electra
 is another contestant.

The Apprenctice was not actually on NBC's 2007-2998 lineup originally,
but got a renewal later in the summer. The hope is that the celebrity
version can give a boost to the show, which has fallen off in the
ratings. There isn't a set date yet for The Apprentice's return, but it
 will debut sometime mid-season.

We can thank Prince for bringing Tara ³Carmen Electra² Patrick to our
attention in the first place. She was really only mildly amusing while he
was dragging her around. When he was done, I was done as well. I¹ll say
this...she¹s working her 15 minutes in a way nobody else can/has. If she
ever wrote a book on how she¹s managed to Tom Arnold her way into pop

Is the Buffy/Angel alum one of the contestants on the celebrity version
 of the series?
 by IGN Staff

Exactly. He said he wouldn't be doing any more wuxia or period
pieces. He said he wanted to do more traditional action movies and
maybe even some comedy.

Same thing with everything Spielberg touches post Close Encounters -- the
ending. Nothing is as bad an ending as "A.I.", to be sure, but Minority
Report could have stayed a little truer to the book for me.

Is the Buffy/Angel alum one of the contestants on the celebrity version
of the series?
by IGN Staff

/BIG CREEK, W.Va./ September 12, 2007, 11:23 p.m. ET · Authorities
decided Wednesday not to pursue hate crime charges in the kidnapping and
weeklong torture of a black woman, instead going after the suspects, who
are white, on state charges that carry stiffer penalties.

While federal civil rights or state hate crime charges remain an option,
a state kidnapping count that carries a sentence of up to life in prison
will provide the best chance for successful prosecution, officials said.

"As a practical matter, sentenced to life, what else can be done?" U.S.
Attorney Charles T. Miller told The Associated Press.

Six people face charges, including kidnapping, sexual assault and lying
to police in the torture of Megan Williams, 20, at a remote hillside
home in Big Creek.

State hate crime charges, which carry a sentence of 10 years, could come
later, prosecutor Brian Abraham said. State sexual assault charges carry
a penalty up to 35 years in prison.

The woman's captors forced her to eat rat droppings, choked her with a
cable cord and stabbed her in the leg while calling her a racial slur,
according to criminal complaints. They also poured hot water over her,
made her drink from a toilet, and beat and sexually assaulted her during
a span of about a week, the documents say.

Williams was not a random target, prosecutor Brian Abraham said
Wednesday. She had a "social relationship" with one of the suspects, he
said.

The Associated Press generally does not identify suspected victims of
sexual assault, but Williams and her mother, Carmen Williams, agreed to
release her name. Carmen Williams said she wanted people to know what
her daughter had endured.

At one point, a suspect cut the woman's ankle with a knife and used the
N-word in telling her she was victimized because she is black, according
to the complaints.

It wasn't until an anonymous tip led Logan County sheriff's deputies to
the property on Saturday that her ordeal ended, authorities said. She
limped toward the deputies, her arms outstretched as she cried, "Help
me," officials said.

Williams remained hospitalized Wednesday in Charleston. The hospital
declined to release any information about her condition.

The victim had a previous relationship with Bobby Brewster, one of the
six in custody, Abraham said. He was charged in July with domestic
battery and assault after a domestic dispute involving the same woman.

"She obviously had some sort of social relationship," Abraham said.
"That is based on the fact that she was present at his residence on a
prior date."

The suspects have arrest records going back several years, according to
records from Logan County Magistrate Court, and Abraham said was he
familiar with all of them.

"Most of the charges are minor things," Abraham said. "Basically on
weekends they get in trouble and by the middle of the week they make up
with each other."

Since 1991, police have filed 108 criminal charges against the six.

Brewster's mother, Frankie Brewster, 49, faced the most serious charges
among them. She was charged in 1994 with first-degree murder but pleaded
guilty to manslaughter and wanton endangerment. She was released from
prison in 2000 after serving five years in the death of an 84-year-old
woman, court records show.

In Williams' case, Frankie Brewster is charged with kidnapping, sexual
assault, malicious wounding and giving false information during a felony
investigation.

Bobby Brewster, 24, also of Big Creek, is charged with kidnapping,
sexual assault, malicious wounding and assault during the commission of
a felony.

In March, Brewster was accused in criminal complaints of attacking his
mother with a machete at her home, according to court records. The
outcome of those charges — domestic assault, brandishing a deadly weapon
and obstructing an officer — was not immediately clear.

Danny J. Combs, 20, of Harts, is charged with sexual assault and
malicious wounding. Karen Burton, 46, of Chapmanville, was charged with
malicious wounding, battery and assault during the commission of a felony.

Burton's daughter, Alisha Burton, 23, and George A. Messer, 27, both of

Online worlds to be AI incubators

 By Mark Ward
 Technology Correspondent, BBC News website

Online worlds such as Second Life will soon become training grounds for
 artificial intelligences.

Researchers at US firm Novamente have created software that learns by
 controlling avatars in virtual worlds.

Initially the AIs will be embodied in pets that will get smarter by
interacting with the avatars controlled by their human owners.

Novamente said it eventually aimed to create more sophisticated avatars
such as talking parrots and even babies.

 Virtual adoption

"The virtual world provides the body," said Dr Ben Goertzel, founder and
 head of Novamente.

He said the company had developed a "Cognition Engine" that acted as the
thinking part of the artificial intelligences it wanted to create.

This engine had some partially scripted behaviours and goals for the
avatar under its control but was also capable of reasoning to work out
novel ways to achieve its aims.

Dr Goertzel said business and research reasons drew Novamente towards
using virtual worlds for its AI development.

There was likely to be a ready market for smart virtual pets in worlds
such as Second Life and many others, he said.

"There are a lot of virtual pets out there and none of them have much
 intelligence," he said.

"We have a pretty fully functioning animal brain right now and we are
hooking it up to the different virtual worlds," said Dr Goertzel. "There's
not much doubt that we can make really cool artificial animals.

"They could be ambient animals that go around and try to achieve their own
goals, or pets that you can give people so they teach them."

Initially Novamente would focus on pets such as dogs or monkeys but aimed
 to branch out afterwards.

"I'd really like to do virtual talking parrots," he said, "and then
virtual babies. You would get one and it would be yours for the next 18
 years."

Also, said Dr Goertzel, smart virtual animals were likely to get a good
reception among gamers and those that spend time in online worlds.

"The gaming industry has been one of the few places where AI has not been
 a dirty word," he said.

Many of the computer controlled characters in games are driven by basic AI
programs that dictate how they behave when attacked, when they spot a
player's character or how they interact.

 Body language

On the research side, said Dr Goertzel, virtual worlds also solved the
problem of giving an AI a relatively unsophisticated environment in which
 it could live and learn.

"I'm one of many AI theorists who believe that embodiment is important,"
he said. "Typing stuff back and forth does not give the AI much to go on
in terms of understanding the world around it, or itself or its place in
 that world."

This desire to embody artificial intelligences led many to robots, he
said, but that approach presented its own problems.

"Robots have a lot of disadvantages, we have not solved all the problems
of getting them to move around and see the world," he said. "It's a lot
more practical to control virtual robots in simulated worlds than real
 robots."

Novamente is working on avatars for different virtual worlds with The
Electric Sheep company that specialises in producing artificial entities
 for online environments.

Dr Goertzel said Novamente was due to announce its first products and
which worlds they would appear in at the Virtual Worlds conference being
held in San Jose in early October.

Messer, 27, both of
Chapmanville, are charged with assault during the commission of a felony
and battery. She pre

a penalty up to 35 years in prison.

Messer, 27, both of
Chapmanville, are charged with assault during the commission of a felony
and battery. She previously faced charges of assault during the
commission of a felony and

I really really hope this young girl fixation is over. I was worried when Joss
Whedon was on the Wonder Woman project, and he too said "I'm going with a
younger character than that traditionally shown in the comics". Got really
nervous there. I'm all for the added drama getting a young, vulnerable girl can
provide, but that's only one plot device of many.

What's the deal with Patrick Stewart?

From: Daryle <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
>From what I understand about "Bionic Woman", the choice of a younger actress
is integral to the basic story. It's not just a remake, but an update.

It's important to note that the most successful franchise on TV is Law &
Order, and generally, they like their women to be GROWN.

As for the other shows, I think the teen fixation (and let's be honest,
it's really a teen FEMALE fixation, which, at this point, is just creepy.)
is about over. It's clear to me that there have been some very old men in
decision making positions, who were pulling a Patrick Stewart ( see that
Extras episode) and just wanted to see young girls around. There's no other
explanation for it. The casting of Lois Lane in "Returns" was just silly.
Katie Holmes is now Mrs. Katherine Cruise, Hollywood wife, bad actress, and
mother. Whoever that girl is in "Transformers" is as much in high school as
*I* am. Even the kids on Disney Channel and Nick are growing up. I think
we've seen the end of an era.

Is the Buffy/Angel alum one of the contestants on the celebrity version
of the series?
by IGN Staff

Re: [scifinoir2] WHO SHOULD SET PRICE FOR ONLINE VIDEO DOWNLOADS?

2007-09-13 Thread KeithBJohnson
And this is how the big corporations keep driving people to illegal filesharing
sites. Apple has managed to do what *no one* had done before: convince people
to *pay* for stuff they actually can get free with some determined searching on
the Net. (or simply sharing burned CDs and DVDs). We went through the same junk
with the advent of the cassette tape and the VCR,and neither of those
recordable media killed the entertainment industry's ability to make a profit.
I find $0.99 for a song reasonable, and ditto for paying 2 - 4 bucks for TV
programs or such. I still don't find iTunes to be the best interface out there,
but Apple's done a great job of merging the iPod, iTunes on PC, and the buying
system for songs and video.

It's working, people are making money, and consumers, again, are *paying* for
stuff. Note that the folks can't say they're not making money, they just want
to say *how much* they make. This is the same mindset that's behind the Net
Neutrality issue, endangering the freedom of the Net itself. and in a few
years, when filesharing sites are more popular than ever, and people from
Russian to TImbuktu pass around ways to subvert DRM and hardcoded anti-copying
systems, the suits will be scratching their heads wondering why no one's paying
their exhorbitant rates to download episodes of "Survivor" or Law and Order:
Mars.

 FOREST WHITAKER TO DO 'MAMBO'

 September

Forest Whitaker has landed a role opposite Jude Law and Brazilian actress
Alice Braga in the futuristic thriller "Repossession Mambo." Based on the
novel by Eric Garcia, the film is set in the near future when artificial
organs can be bought on credit with one catch - if the buyer defaults on
payment, it will result in a fatal repossession. Law's character - himself
"made up of artificial organs' - is a repo man who reclaims organs when
their recipients cannot make the payments. When he struggles to pay off
his new heart, he becomes one of the people he used to hunt down and must
go on the run with Braga's character, who is also down on her luck. The
Universal Pictures project is slated to begin Oct. 15 in Toronto.

15 in Toronto.

on to do your movie it was a special event. Now it seems he¹s working more

Bello Takes Over In Mummy 3

Maria Bello, who co-stars in the upcoming sequel film The Mummy: Tomb of the
Dragon Emperor, told SCI FI Wire that she plays a kick-ass version of the
character originated by Rachel Weisz.

Bello, who won wide acclaim for 2005's A History of Violence, spoke at the
Toronto International Film Festival and added that she dyed her normally blond
hair auburn for the sequel. "Yeah, it's for a film role. It's for Mummy 3, and
I love it," she said.

Bello, who took time off from filming in Montreal to appear at the film
festival to promote The Jane Austen Book Club, takes over the role of Evelyn
Carnahan from Weisz, who played the character in the first two Mummy movies but
bowed out of the third.

"She has the same name, but she's a very different character than Rachel
played," Bello said in an interview. "She's a bad-ass action chick. I had to
train a lot. I had to do wushu, a martial-art form, some kickboxing,
swordfighting, rifle training for a couple of months before we even started
shooting." Bello added: "It's the role of my dreams. It is just a blast."

Bello will soon join co-stars Brendan Fraser and Jet Li for two months of
shooting in China.

Bello said that after a few weeks of rehearsal, she sustained a black eye after
getting butted by a Winchester rifle, but added that she's fine now. "I'm
looking forward to the doll, too, though," she said cryptically. The Mummy:
Tomb of the Dragon Emperor opens Aug. 1, 2008.

Messer, 27, both of
Chapmanville, are charged with assault during the commission of a felony
and battery. She previously faced charges of assault during the
commission of a felony and battery; in May, she was accused of striki

Is the Buffy/Angel alum one of the contestants on the celebrity version
of the series?
by IGN Staff

[scifinoir2] Potter Is Biggest Franchise Ever

2007-09-13 Thread Tracey de Morsella (formerly Tracey L. Minor)
Potter Is Biggest Franchise Ever

The success of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has made Warner
Brothers' boy-wizard films the top-grossing franchise in movie history,
the studio announced.

The combined worldwide box-office gross for the five Harry Potter films
to date is more than $4.47 billion, surpassing the box-office totals of
all 22 James Bond films and the six Star Wars movies, the studio said on
Sept. 10.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is still going strong in
theaters around the globe, and two more films are in the works: Harry
Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows, based on J.K. Rowling's beloved books.

All five of the Potter films so far have found themselves among the 20
largest-grossing box-office hits of all time.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince will open on Nov. 21, 2008. The
seventh and final film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is planned
for a 2010 release.

[scifinoir2] Jericho Spoilers Revealed

2007-09-13 Thread Tracey de Morsella (formerly Tracey L. Minor)
Jericho Spoilers Revealed
http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=0&id=44074
The producers of CBS' post-apocalyptic series Jericho invited SCI FI
Wire to tour the set of the show, which is currently in production, and
offered a few spoilers about the upcoming second season.

Among the new buildings on the freshly rebuilt main street in the Van
Nuys suburb of Los Angeles was a cement facade that housed the
headquarters of Jennings and Rall, a multinational organization that
sets up shop in the town in season two.

There was also evidence of a continued military presence following its
arrival in the season finale to suppress the hostilities between Jericho
and the neighboring town of New Bern.

John Steinberg, co-creator and producer of the show, said in interviews
that the seven episodes of the season will focus primarily on the
introduction of these new outside elements to the town of Jericho and
how its citizens respond to them.

"The first season was about that sort of invisible force, the
government, the law, the financial system, all those things,
disappearing, and living in a vacuum," Steinberg said in an interview on
the set. "And season two is about what happens when something comes back
to replace that vacuum, and it's not what you remembered being there
when you left. And so that's kind of the big arc of it, and how we
respond to that and resist it or learn to deal with it."

After CBS canceled Jericho in May, fans rallied in support of the show
and sent in thousands of boxes of nuts (inspired by a line of dialogue)
to the network executives in an effort to convince them to reconsider.
The campaign was successful, and less than three weeks later CBS
president Nina Tassler announced that the show would be receiving a
seven-episode order for midseason.

Steinberg said that because of the abbreviated season, many of the
unresolved threads from the finale will be wrapped up swiftly in the
season premiere. But the repercussions of those events will be felt for
some time to come.

"The practical element of it is going to get resolved pretty quickly,"
he said. "But the first season is going to bleed story all the way
through the second season, especially that finale. It's stuff that they
went through way too much, and it was way too terrible for them to get
over it in seven episodes. So it's all in there."

Before the cancellation announcement, the writing staff had already
mapped out a 22-episode season. But Steinberg said that they managed to
condense it down by approaching the seven episodes as an extended movie
that will lead into a potential full third year.

"In changing it from 22 to seven episodes, we sort of broke it like a
movie," Steinberg said. "And so I think we want to find the best end of
this movie that we can come up with. And I think we have a pretty good
one. ... You're going to feel satisfied, but you're also going to know
that there's a lot more story coming down the road and that it's not
tied up in a bow in any way."

Jericho does not yet have an air date, but is expected to return
sometime late this year or in early 2008.

[scifinoir2] WHO SHOULD SET PRICE FOR ONLINE VIDEO DOWNLOADS?

2007-09-13 Thread Tracey de Morsella (formerly Tracey L. Minor)
As rumors continued to circulate that Apple is considering slashing the
price it charges for video downloads on its iTunes Music Store, News
Corp President and COO Peter Chernin has expressed his concern about the
reported cuts. In an interview with Reuters while on business in Poland,
Chernin said that he plans to discuss Apple's pricing structures with
the company but that at present he's not engaged in a dispute with Apple
-- unlike NBC Universal executives who have notified Apple that they
plan to remove all Universal movies and NBC television shows from the
iTunes website by the end of the year. "Right now we have a perfectly
good relationship with Apple," he said. "But let me say this, we're the
ones who should determine what the fair price for our product is, not
Apple." (An NBC Universal spokesman later agreed with Chernin "without
question.") Chernin's remarks appeared to raise new concerns about who
really does control the pricing of such related items as movie theater
tickets and DVDs (which are often sold as loss leaders by such warehouse
outlets as Wal-Mart and Costco).
