[SLUG] Samba Problems
Hi All, Having a few issues with a samba share that i cannot work out... Basically i can access a share called "shared" on my samba server but nobody else can do it on their machines, even though they are part of the same group and that group has access to the share - otherwise i myself wouldnt be able to access it... The other users seem to be authenticating, because they can see their home directory and write/read to it/from it... here is the smb.conf: [global] server string = Samba Server %v security = user map to guest = bad user workgroup = WG1 load printers = yes log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd dns proxy = no printcap name = cups encrypt passwords = yes wins support = true max log size = 50 printer admin = @adm socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 printing = cups unix password sync = yes netbios name = woja os level = 20 [homes] comment = Home Directories browseable = no writable = yes [shared] writeable = yes valid users = @shared user = @shared path = /mnt/shared comment = shared folder /mnt/shared is owned by the group "shared" and all have read write permissions recursively.. Each time i try to browse the "shared" share on one of the other workstations, this appears in the appropriate log file: [2003/11/19 14:23:45, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(599) compaq (192.168.1.102) Can't change directory to /mnt/shared (Permission denied) [2003/11/19 14:23:45, 0] smbd/service.c:make_connection(599) compaq (192.168.1.102) Can't change directory to /mnt/shared (Permission denied) where else can their permission be denied ??? it doesnt make sense... One idea is that all web/proxy access results in > redirection to the terms & conditions site, no other > ports/routing occurs until form filled out and/or payment made. Was recently travelling in europe and stumbled upon a couple public hotspots in hotels etc. The way they all worked was that they were essentially open to all, but your IP or MAC (or both) were blocked to the internet. You were redirected to a page to enter in your credit card details and once you bought credit, you could login and logout of the system through a web interface - this would essentially block and unblock your access and also of course stop the timer. Great setup - pitty the hotspots I found were pretty expensive (EUR10 for 2 hours) but internet cafes/hotspots in europe are generally pretty expensive compared to our cafés. > +++ Almost all ISP's insist you not do anything illegal even > though they > don't check. Look below... > Can you change the MAC address of wireless cards? How long before the > Taiwanese build one you can change? Yes you can. Question is in this instance, can you have two MAC addresses (different cards) on the same network at the same time?? I suspect this would cause some havoc, or would it?? If you cant have two MAC's on the same network at the same time, there is no way to hijack really (???) because the person has logged off, hence blocking that MAC. Feel free to correct me! [SLUG] Messaging & Kicking Users on Console
Hi All, Have googled for this but cannot seem to find the answer to these pretty simple/common (i thought) questions. 1) how do i kick people off my linux box that are logged in via ssh or someother means i.e how do i get rid of them out of "w" 2) how do i send messages to people logged in on ssh etc. Similar to when you halt the system. [SLUG] Apache 2.0 UserDir
Hi, Trying to use the UserDir option in apache 2.0 I have added this into /etc/httpd/conf/httpd2.conf: UserDir /share/html And I go to the browser and type http://localhost/~adamw And I get a 403 forbidden. And this in the error log: [Wed Apr 07 17:27:16 2004] [error] [client 192.168.1.101] (13)Permission denied: access to /~adamw denied /share/html/adamw exists. [SLUG] HTTPS, dyndns, Apache
Hi All, Just experimenting with SSL on Apache. Have set up my own little dyndns domain. But i notice that when i surf from outside my network to https://woja.somedyndns.comdomain then it asks about the cert not being signed etc etc and asks me to login (apache basic login) and then "redirects" me to https://<>/ which of course cannot be accessed outside my local network. A Router (there are many) that will connect to your cable modem and then to your pc's. They all usually come standard with an inbuilt 4 port switch, so that will serve you just fine. Examples that will do the job: http://www.everythinglinux.com.au/cat/hardware/routers (I don't have any association with elx, you could possibly get it cheaper at www.ht.com.au) ELX sell a linksys for $95.50. I have been running this same router for a couple years and its served well. Do you have any experience with networking computers? If not, I shall explain further on how to connect the machines to the router. For exchanging files, setup samba on the debian box and then you can browse the shared files on the debian box from the old machine. RE: [SLUG] Intro and a question
Gary, Firstly, be sure to hit "reply to all" when replying to posts on the list. This will ensure the message gets posted back to the list, instead of going directly to the person who posted the reply. > It's probably a moot point now, but the primary use of the > computer is browsing, email, some office suite functions and > a bit of digital image storage and manipulation. I have and > use a copy of The GIMP on my Win box but it's a bit flaky. > Looking forward to running it on a fast and dedicated Linux box. Sounds like you have this part of it down pat. > I don't have any experience with networking, but your > pointers about a router and setting up samba give me the > place to start. Presumably samba uses the same cables that > run to/from the router - almost like a "T" > junction: the Optusnet cable plugs into the router and there > is a line from the router to each computer? Ok, the way you set it up: A) Cable modem will connect to the router with a cat5 cable in the WAN port (basically the external traffic port) B) computer 1 will connect to one of the internal network ports i.e one of the ports on the inbuilt switch. Again using a cat5 cable. C) computer 2 will connect the same way as computer 1, obviously in a different port on the inbuilt switch. D) switch on router. Default config on the router should be ok, except for changing the password on the admin tool (usually web based, depends on router) All these setup steps should be outlined in the manual you get with the router. Samba is simply some software that runs in linux that enables linux to emulate windows sharing or in laymens terms - Make it appear in "Network Neighbourhood". Once this is done, you can either see it in "network neighbourhood" (or "my network places" in XP) or type \\linuxboxname\sharename in start|run and you will see the files on the linux box just like you are browsing a file on the local pc. I'd suggest getting the network up and running with sharing the internet connection and then we can talk about setting up samba. No need to overwhelm yourself. Cheers, Adam. > > I'm planning on keeping the old machine around and hopefully > > access Optusnet cable for both. Peter, > >>A Router (there are many) that will connect to your cable > > err why wouldn't you just use the Linux box as the router? Because when you dont have any knowledge of networking machines then wouldnt you think its even harder to setup masquerading on a linux box along with figuring out how to connect the machines? > Connect the cable modem to the new Linux box and then connect the old > box to the new with > a cross over network cable. > Set up iptables on the new box as a firewall and forward/masquerade > for the other box > depending on how/where the ip address for the cable modem is > allocated. Along with installing a new network card when probably not having done this before. ~$95 is not alot to spend on a router that will be guarunteed to work 99.9% of the time. Do this all the time in my web apps. It works relatively well with a few little draw backs.. You have to worry about carriage returns and single quotes in the data that is being returned in the javascript as this will cause parsing errors in JS.. It's rather quick though and if you write good JS then it should work on all modern browsers. You could always use a two/more step method (back to the web server) but I particularly don't like these :) Adam. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

[SLUG] X not starting on boot
Hi, Got a problem getting my machine to automatically boot into X. I can get it to boot into a console and then use 'startx' to get into X. but everytime i tell it to boot into X it just gives me a black screen when its meant to give me a logon screen. It could possibly be a video card problem. I cannot switch between X (once started) and a console ( doing ctrl-alt-F1) and then back to X (doing ctrl-alt-F7). Gives me this same black screen. Looks like it has a problem switching. I am running Mandrake LE2005 (10.2). It is an IBM machine, onboard video card - intel 82845 chipset. Using the 845 driver. Looked thru the logs and found a few errors. Dont know if these have anything to do with it. ... Failed to load module "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.a" ... ... ignoring font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont ... Other font directories are listed also... [SLUG] [OT]: Database Design Question
Hi, Can anyone put a name to the following type of design... I need to be able to modify the amount/names of data "fields" stored for an entity so instead of representing the data stored for an entity in fields associated with that entity you would relate it to an another entity which would contain a datafield type field and its associated value, so different rows in the parent table could possibly have different datafields associated with it. E.g The parent table is "person" and it holds common data amongst all people - it has primary key of personID. There is another table assoicated with person called "personDetails". This would have fields "personID", "dataType" and "dataValue". It might have records like the following: personID, dataType, dataValue 1,phone,123456 1,email,test@test.com 1,state,NSW 2,phone,987456321 2,state,VIC 3,phone,789456123 Of course this is just an example - the parent entity could be anything. Hope someone can put a name to this sort of design. I want to research into this to see how people search effectively in this design and its performance compared to traditional methods etc etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Adam. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

How secure are VPN's in terms of packet sniffers/encryption etc. The company that I work for has decided to use citrix Nfuse or whatever the S^#@ is! Because they argue that using a VPN is insecure - I totally disagree with this, as I know massive multi-national corporations use these and rely on these. And as if these companies would use this if it was insecure. This isnt to say we havent got VPN access - they have set up a win2k server to do this, though they make everyone use citrix nFuse(over a 128bit SSL connection), and only special people (like me :) get to use a VPN. Personally I hate citrix - VPN for remote access is 100 times quicker and more convenient (for the laptop user)! Cheers, And TIA for your comments. [SLUG] IE running on Linux - Suggestions
Hi All, One of the biggest factors of me crossing over to full time linux, at work and at home is the ability to run IE(please no flames). I just get really frustrated going to websites that run perfectly on IE, and seeing them all jumbled up on opera/mozilla or whatever because they don't support HALF the amount of functions IE has implemented e.g go to ninemsn.com.au, www.msn.com, www.microsoft.com sorry cant remember any non-ms sites :). I have been messing around with running IE using WINE, but after I got past a couple SHLWAPI.DLL not found and the like, when I run 'wine iexplore.exe' it just thinks for a bit and then returns to the prompt... I have had a peep at crossover office/plugin - how well does this work?? I am really only looking to get IE running nicely. I don't want to spend my US$60 to find that it works for most, but not for me. It's a real pitty they don't have a demo release! Or not one that I can find! Maybe someone can suggest another way of running IE?? I don't want to run any sort of VM - I just want to run a single app. A contributing factor to wine not working for me I think is the fact that I run win2k on the other partition I was trying to run IE off - everyone posting on the wine forums seemed to be running win95/98 flavours. BTW, I'm running MDK9.0, 1Ghz PIII-M, 256MB RAM - power shouldn't be a problem. Any appropriate suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Fibre (correct me if I'm wrong anyone!!) wont give you better speeds as such - unless of course your comparing gigabit fibre to 10/100 copper. The main use for fibre is for distance communications. You see cat5 can only go approx 100m (probably less) without losing the signal completely... Where as fibre can reach far greater distances (I wont try give an estimate) but its way more than copper. So depending on how far this building is away from the other, and the cable run, will determine the sort of link you should get. On linux it is much like a TERMINAL and on windows, you control the local mouse and keyboard. If you want to control the local mouse and keyboard, so the mouse moves on the local screen when the VNC mouse moves - mandrake made some sort of remote desktop app that uses VNC to control the local K&M. If you sell less, you get hit with the GST... e.g spend $1000 - get hit with $100 gst only sell $100 worth of goods - $10 GST meaning you get hit with $90 gst to pay or have paid. *i think i am correct hehe * -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug
