Which means they are filtering web traffic as well, and likely blocking all ports except 80 and 443, both of which are likely filtered. Which means you are flat out of luck - except for setting up a server in the cloud somewhere that has a secure smtp daemon listening on port 80 (incidentally, depending on the filter this may not work either). A preferable alternative might be to run a VPN with a SMTP server available at the other end and hope they allow the VPN ports out. I've got to select a DMS/ECM for a non-profit organisation (actually a publisher) and have Nuxeo, Alfresco and OpenKM on the shortlist. TIA Fil Hi Phil, 11 years in that industry must be good for something, I suppose :-). Of the three DM/ECM products you mention, I have experience with Alfresco, and passing knowledge of Nuxeo (as well as far too many brain cells wasted on their proprietary brethren, e.g. Documentum, TRIM, Stellent/Oracle, IBM Content Manager) There are a few issues outside of technology that you should think about regardless of your choice. Are you after DM, or the whole ECM box-and-dice? (RM, DAM/Image management, Archiving, workflow/bpm, WCM ... and DM). There is overlap, but ECM is a cumbersome beast if all you want is DM. Are you prepared for the cost/effort? Not talking about software here, but the key to successful DM/ECM projects is managing them as a change management exercise, which means people costs. Making the change to a managed DM/ECM environment is often a huge cultural shift, and the best technology can wither and die if the organisation has a bad reaction. On the Alfresco front, it definitely has some advantages. There's local support here in Sydney, the product has a great roadmap, and John Newton's team seem quick to pick up the technology trends in ECM (e.g. they had CMIS prototype support in the same month the standard was announced). Given my particular biases, I like it because it's also technology agnostic under the hood, giving you OS, database and app server choice. Another big plus is that it is definitely a growing product and company. You aren't going to be left with orphan-ware in two years' time :-). Other current trends they seem to be following are heavily tied to collaboration, so if that's a current or future requirement, it has some benefits. Probably the only major gotcha I'd warn about is the enterprise version trap. Some of the nice bells and whistles are only available in the paid version. No problem with this, per se, it's their business model and best of luck to them. They do, however, have an unusual support model where support partners agreeing to partner with Alfresco on the enterprise edition are contractually bound to *not* support the community edition. Again, that's not really a technology issue, more a business one. You are in luck again, as there are both kinds of support available here in Sydney - enterprise partners who only do enterprise support, and other support outfits that support both (without the ent. partner label). Anyway, that's my 2¢. If that raises more questions for you, please feel free to contact me. Very informative, thanks Grant - *much appreciated*. There are really only 2 definite areas that are of interest - DM and workflow. Archiving could potentially be useful, depending on complexity of setup. Collaboration could also be useful, but I have not done any research into what specifically that entails, and hence I am not sure how well that would go with the file formats being used (PDF and Adobe Pagemaker, some Quark Express). The organisation is basically a translator/publisher type deal. So it's not a configuration that violates the protocol, that I can see. Whether it's a totally sensible configuration is another question: it tends to interact badly if the sender address in turn greylists incoming mail, for example. But it's unlikely to be accidental on their part. I for one think it's perfectly cromulent. If the sender MX utilises greylisting then it'll send back a transient failure message as distinct from a permanent 550 failure. At that point, the receiving MX can either assume a transient failure means it's normally a valid address and accept the mail, or give back its own transient failure - an eye for an eye if you like. If that's a problem, I'm more inclined to blame it on greylisting. Introducing needless artificial delays strikes me as an incredibly ugly solution for dealing with spam. Peter Rundle wrote: Sluggers, I'm looking for a Content Management System written in PHP, Joomla has been recommended. The application that I have in mind will probably make use of the postgresql gis extensions. Does anyone have any opinions on Joomla, whether it can be bent onto Postgres or recommendations for an alternative. The application that I'm developing contains most of your common web site functions, from moderately static type information pages, to more dynamic content, along with user accounts that mostly just granting access to restricted areas of the site and probably the ability for each user to edit their own own details. There will also be a mapping component (more than likely using google maps), and the need to store some polygonal and other GIS based data (hence the requirement for posgresql GIS). Having used Joomla once (ok maybe twice) and Drupal once, my first impression was Joomla was overly complicated where Drupal was clearer/simpler. I've had other people say similar things. Code is probably similar to usage experience, if you are looking to modify - but I can't vouch for it as I've never looked at their code (actually not true but only in the very vaguest of manner have I looked at the code for either). Not that I am pushing one or the other, but MySQL has spatial extensions also. I know I can do route del -net 169.254.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 to delete the route, but I'd rather have not show it up in the first place. There got to be some setting to stop this net appearing in the kernel routing table. You need to tell your card to not do zero config stuff. How you do this depends on the distribution. Redhat based distributions you add nozeroconfig to the appropriate ifcfg-ethx file in /etc/network-scripts/networking/ (or something like that - memory is a but rusty). Ubuntu (and probably debian) editing the /etc/network/interfaces file should do the trick. Microsoft Outlook can use a particular format of email called rich text - which only Outlook can read (not even Outlook Express can). The effect on all other email readers is that emails arrive with winmail.dat attachments - the email is sent out with the body of the message as plain text and the formatted body plus any attachments all bundled up into winmail.dat. To extract any attachments there are readers online and downloadable that will unpack the winmail.dat and dump the body and attachments out. Users of Microsoft outlook can select to use rich text editing or not. I'd suggest telling them to not do so. [SLUG] Xorg Multiple Monitors
Hi I've been beating my head against this for many hours now (and not the first time either), trawling through endless Google results, howto's manuals, and hints, and still no further. I am trying to get multiple monitors (just 2 for now, 3 eventually) going using a two-head GeForce 8600 card. I also have a GeForce 7100 in the same system. At this stage I don't care what card/outputs are used to achieve the desired outcome. I can get multiple monitors going with Nvidia's TwinView, except windows maximise to the full desktop width, instead of just one monitor - which is real annoying. I used to have this running on Ubuntu Fiesty (it may have been Dapper, not sure, but I was also running E17 at the time) - I am now running standard Gutsy (except for binary nvidia drivers - the latest). Any hints/urls/comments that are helpful/funny or otherwise would be much appreciated. Failing this, my next port of call is to join the xorg lists/forums and ask there. Peter Rundle wrote: Phil, I'm currently running dual monitors on FC5 with a Matrox G400. I have my machine setup dual boot with Gutsy but cannot get it to do dual monitors in spite of all the googling I've done. My problem appears to be that it requires the binaries from Matrox to support the second screen. The open source drivers from Xorg just don't support this card in dual screen mode. Matrox have stopped supporting the binaries past xorg 7.0.0, but have released the source code (though I can't get it to compile on Gutsy yet). X -version on Gutsy give 1.3.0 which is kinda confusing as the older FC5 gives 7.0.0. So I'm currently stuck with FC5 until I can get a driver for the card that supports dual screens to load into Xorg 1.3.0. I can send you my org.conf file that works in FC5, if that helps but honestly it's nothing special and you are using different cards anyway. There are lots and lots of examples on the net of twin screen setups but I've tried them all and none of them work (besides you'd think that my best chance was the config I have for FC5 that does work). I think that you're problem is probably the same as mine, that is there's an issue with the driver, maybe there is some config option that you can put into xorg that will put the card into dual screen mode, but I don't know what that might be. Not sure this helps you much accept that you're not alone with being unable to get Gutsy to run dual. Thanks Pete. Sounds very simnilar to my experience - a thousand examples on the net and none of them work in my case. So everyone except this client will be able to use VPN to access everything on the network as usual and potential client will be able to access only boxes on those specific IP addresses? I'm interested in achieving exactly that also within our project. The situation that we have is that our remote support people want to access the server and then go out to individual (possibly windows) workstations on the network. They can do that at the moment by opening vnc on the server and using the remote desktop client to go to the client machines. That is not ideal, but it does work. It would be really handy to be able to run some sort of script on the server to allow this to happen easily. It's really good to here that there is actually so much expertise in this area on the mailing list. I am myself trying to come up with an easy gui interface, maybe in python, just to select all the hosts that would be available in the remote site. Click one and open access. So I am interested in what others are doing here... You could simply use a web page that is dynamically updated (if needed) with info as to what machines are available on the network. Clicking on links could then open a vnc connection using the java applet that vnc comes with. This way, remote staff vpn in to the network - get access to the intranet page with all machines listed (maybe with some sort of authentication) and simply click to open a vnc session to that machine. Without giving it much thought, there are likely to be security issues though -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

Yes.. but it takes some time to do all that... I guess you are talking about not having to do the extra install the other things? Exactly.. Have all the other things ready, even on a live-cd to give to a customer. All they do is insert the CD in some-machine, and it creates a vpn link back with all the packages loaded.. ready for the support-staff to admin... in addition, the support-staff can use RADMIN/RDP or VNC or whatever to support all the windows machines on the lan also. That will create support opportunities and the chance to build up ongoing monthly incomes, depending on how many businesses the support-company can sign up. I know a lot of IT-support companies would like to use linux a lot more but the problem is that the current distros aren't really configured in such a way that enables them to make money from them directly. That is the big reason why i think there is space for a distro/derivative. The problem is what do you include - as what a server has installed can depend greatly on its purpose. [SLUG] New Federal Govt's Education/PC plans
People, Given that the new PM, Kevin Rudd, has indicated that ensuring that every senior high school student has a PC is the number one priority for the new government - has there been any discussion about how the FOSS community is going to respond to this? It seems we should be working on proposals immediately. My personal view is that the government should make an in-principle decision to install a FOSS OS on the PCs and let the users (schools) decide if they want to change to a MS OS (at their own cost). I think the PC should be just a wireless client that can be easily reset to factory defaults and all the apps and data should be handled centrally ala gmail etc. Of course a FOSS solution like this will need a support network, maybe something resembling: http://www.healthnetwork.com.au/ ie http://www.schoolnetwork.org.au/ ? [SLUG] JFS on RAID Disappeared
Hi all I've got a raid (1+0) system which I formatted as JFS. It has worked fine for weeks now. The power dropped out suddenly this morning whilst reading from the RAID via NFS. On reboot, the RAID is empty - won't mount. Complains about fs type, which, even if specified as JFS still complains (wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md2, missing codepage or other error). I am trying my best a Google, but can't come up with the correct search phrase, or any other hints from man pages either. All partitions on the 4 drives are OK, seem intact. I'm running Ubuntu Dapper. And when making software RAID, check that it works with as little data as possible so that when you do put your terabytes of *cough* pictures and movies *cough* on it, you won't lose it when you do reboot for whatever reason. Indeed a good idea. In this case I hadn't put all that much on it - just under 5GB, all of which I have other backups of still. On second thought though, and after looking through the logs, I don't think the mdadm.conf was misconfigured, as it found md2 fine according to the logs on reboot. I think it was a simple matter of corruption in the fs tables or bad superblock or some other jfs corruption caused by sudden drop out. True; I wonder whether there's been any serious study done on what common file systems actually do when the power just goes out from underneath them. No idea. Would be interesting to know. Most of my experience has been with ext3 which, at least in my experience, handles a power drop out quite well - on rare occasions have I had to repair the filesystem. The user I set this up for was moving around a number of countries, and hence internet providers with different SMTP requirements. Most ISP's were like the bigpond situation you are facing, forcing the from to be the ISP's provided email address. Also, there aren't that many ISP's worth using who allow usage of their SMTP servers from outside their own network anyway. In fact, mutt (and most other MUAs) have a setting sendmail=... or similar that simply gets interpreted as send the mail using sendmail/postfix/exim/qmail, thus using a sledgehammer to crack walnuts. You can use **any** deliver-only utility for this -- the only problem occurs when you try to send via mutt (or whatever) when offline -- most deliver-only utilities do not have a queueing or queue-flushing function. The problem with this is that these days you need to use an upstream smtp server as opposed to being one yourself to get the message delivered correctly. A lot of MTA's these days refuse to accept messages from the home-server type MTA which forces people to use their ISP's SMTP, but in the case of some bigpond accounts (namely dynamic ip address accounts), it forces all messages to go out as if from the bigpond email address of the conneciton account - not very useful when you have your own domain. No traffic is blocked on eth0 so that we can apply patches and updates to the server (Mandriva 2007). The tables below have done the job. We now need to allow access to port 389 (Active Director) only, from the DMZ server to an AD server on eth2. I am no good at this and was wondering if someone could suggest the change/changes to the rules below to allow this to happen. |---| eth2---| |---eth0 -- Internet eth1---| | |---| iptables -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -i eth2 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -i eth1 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -i eth2 -j ACCEPT iptables -A INPUT -i eth1 -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT iptables -A OUTPUT -o eth2 -j DROP iptables -A OUTPUT -o eth1 -j DROP This was not the question but it seems to me that the first 2 rules and rules 4 and 5 are duplicates in that rules 4 and 5 would accept anything the first 2 do. Rules 4 and 5 basically allow any packet coming in on eth1 and eth2 regardless of source/port/protocol/state. I am making a lot of assumptions about the rest of the rules and default policies and other things but something like iptables -A OUTPUT -o eth2 -d ip.address.of.adserver -p !icmp --dport ldap -j ACCEPT placed before the second last line above (the ...-o eth2 -j DROP line) should do it. In plain english this says Allow any packet going out on interface eth2 whose destination (-d) is ip.address.of.adserver and whose protocol (-p) is not icmp (!icmp) and whose destination port (--dport) is that of the ldap entry in /etc/services. To be safe you could put 389 instead of ldap after --port. There may be other ports you may need to let through such as 135 (MS-RPC) depending on your purpose/configuration. At least if the email is rejected, the user knows that the recipient didn't see it. If its lost in the spam box, then the sender wouldn't know if it was received or not. Cheers, Scott [1] Depending on the email setup. True it won't get caught in the trap, but in some cases this would generate more spam for the sender still. There are not that many end users who interact at the MTA level. The rejecting MTA refuses to accept the mail and tells the sending MTA so, the sending MTA then generates a refused delivery message to the sender who never knew about the original email in the first place because the sender address was forged. Re: [SLUG] NAS SCSI/SATA
Thanks to Amos and David for their replies. It confirms my own investigations. There is NAS and there is NAS. Cheap low end NAS are no better than a home build linux file server, in fact some that I found are worse (in terms of performance). Anyway, to get anything decent (ie better than what a standard linux file server can provide), a medium to higher end one is needed (ie approaching SAN types). In terms of the SATA vs SCSI - jury is still out although I think the answer is no. SCSI is still worth the extra quid for situations where it would be a consideration. Fil David Kempe wrote: Hi Amos, I have done something like that with shared storage and your classic linux heartbeat stuff a while ago. This sort of setup requires the actually Xen Dom0s to be different machines, bringing the machine count to at least 4. If you want just HA samba, you only need two machines, even if you use DRBD to keep the disks in sync. Samba is tcp though so if you want to keep the streams running you need to use LVS, or something like the approach we are doing above, which is Xen live migration for HA failover (this bit is not fully tested yet for me). David Lloyd wrote: Howard, I don't think there is too much likelihood of getting M$ products out of schools when you consider the predatory prices that M$ charge education for licences. I think it's time to change the way we think of this concept. The pricing of MS products to educational market simply means the licence cost argument goes out the window. What needs to be argued are the other benefits of open source - which should be the case in any situation anyway, not just educational. Licencing costs are not the only costs. As Penedo implied earlier, putting a tool in users hands that they are not comfortable with costs money (in either retraining or lack of productivity and disgruntled employees). The key is arguing the points without sounding like a religious fanatic attacking MS. As you say, if we haven't already, we need to stop with the open source costs $0 for licencing as the sole argument or even primary argument and move to highlighting other benefits. So you'd have people arriving to meetings over a period of twenty minutes. I regularly get global emails at my current work saying that the resource-booking system is broken and to use bits of paper stuck to the doors of the meeting rooms instead. Do they use Exchange?? ;) On large scale, calendars probably don't work too well, but with relatively small numbers (such as staff only at a school), it seems to work. The issue will be though that only some people will use it. Having said that, the ethos is changing as we get more and more tech-savy teachers - as in happy to use and expect to use technology (though of course they may not be able to but that is beside the point). + sync to PDA (typically a Windows one of course) Who really ever does this? I know several people who do. Unfortunately at one particular site, the decision maker does so it's a must of course. + private and shared contacts Yeah like this will ever be accurate or up-to-date. I worked for a big corporate once who had an _amazing_ LDAP infrastructure. You could build an Org chart from it. Implemented in OpenLDAP. Never seen a place with Exchange where there hasn't been something seriously wrong with the data. For large contact lists (such as large corporations) sure they probably won't ever be up to date. A school is different, particularly if the school does not have student email, just staff. We're only talking a relatively small list, easily maintained. With the current system, I have a shared list that works. + home folders available for download only Not quite sure what this is and I've never seen it implemented in the real world in Exchange. Neither have I. In fact I don't even know if Exchange can do it, but I have been told it does (although they could be getting confused with public folders). I may be able to get away with this as a separate option as opposed to integrated with the mail and calendar system. [SLUG] Ubuntu (dapper) server issues
All, I have had ubuntu dapper installed as a server for a few months. Two weeks ago I finally managed to get autofs with LDAP working, and being used by over systems within our organisation. However since then we have had the server lockup, i.e. no login ability, no DHCP, no DNS. When you try to login it takes a very long time. There are of course no error messages which seems strange. All the nfs, autofs packages are at the latest versions. I did notice that nfs was complaining of no /var/lib/nfs/v4recovery directory, which I have made and restarted nfs, this eliminated the error report. Has anyone else had these issues ? Or seen something similar ? Phil. -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html

[Fwd: Re: [SLUG] linux assignment]
Folk, I watched with interest when the 'student' posted his request for help on his assignment. I agreed with a lot of the comment made by folk, but I opted to reply to David and keep it private, one-on-one. However, now that I see David again making the same approach I have decided to let the group see the comments I sent David in the 1st place. If David took my advice, that book purchase will have likely assisted him with his assignment. I suspect he did not buy the book. David, as suggested by one more recent postee - I would encourage you to perhaps take whatever PC you have at home and install Linux. By actually using it you will learn more in 1 week than you could imagine and those assignments wont give rise to the sort of questions you have posted to this group - which frankly demonstrate a clear lack of effort on your part. Learning Linux is a journey - you have to take it. Expecting it to come to you by asking this group to do your assignment is robbing you of the joy of the journey. You might think thats all a waste of time - I hope not. Distributions for about 5 or 6 alternatives are available from most newsagents - CD, DVD's included for the princely sum of $16. Next Handbooks publish them in Australia. (I am not associated with Next) FC4, Debian, - take your choice. As a tempter - it would take you 15mins to buy it at the local newsagent, about 1hr to install either of these distros on a recent PC, and then about 1hr to do your assignment. In one afternoon you would learn more about Linux than you seem likely to in a whole semester of your course as things seem to stand now. Best of luck and go do it - enjoy! [SLUG] Firewall Device Opinions
Hi I'm after opinions on the following two options in terms of a straight firewall. Since I have never used OpenWRT devices before I don't have any idea how they rate against a full pc running as a firewall. The options are: 1. OpenWRT on a Linksys device 2. Small form factor pc with some sort of solid state memory running linux. The only caveat is that it (the fw) has to allow for a DMZ, and may have to run multiple internet (WAN) connections (I am currently investigating/googling whether an OpentWRT device can do this) in the future. Otherwise fairly straight forward. This is for a business environment.
