[SLUG] Sarge install floppies

2004-12-09 Thread Robert Tillsley
Hi guys

I'm trying to install ubuntu (or generic debian) onto a laptop without a
cdrom drive. I've been able to download the root and boot images and am
using winimage to put them to a floppy. When I download the cd-drivers.img
and the net-drivers.img and open them in winimage they don't have any files.
I've tried dowloading from planet mirror,
ftp://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/linux/debian/dists/sarge/main/installer-i386/
rc2/images/floppy/ and
http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/images/daily/floppy/

Can anyone suggest why they are blank?

Cheers

[SLUG] proxy

2004-10-06 Thread Robert Tillsley
I'm thinking of setting up a linux proxy, using debian, squid and
dansguardian. I'd like to have it authenticate with windows users if
possible so I can have separate rules for students, staff etc. I'm
running an active directory based network. Has anyone done something
like this? If so, any advice before I start?

Thanks for the advice guys. What I am looking for is transparent
authentication. Someone else has just told me that dansguardian won't
work with ntlm authentication and AD groups, so I might have to
reconsider this.

For the OP, transparent authentication and transparent
 proxy are two
very different and conflicting terms; they are mutually exclusive.

transparent authentication: read NTLM Authentication. This
 works via the
magic of Samba and winbind and is VERY well documented in the
 Squid FAQ's.
If you go through it all step-by-step, it Just Works (tm).
 It's even
easier now with Samba 3, compared to the earlier Samba
 versions (2.2 et
 al).

transparent proxy: means all your outgoing port 80/443 requests are
transparently redirected to the proxy irrespective of the
 users' proxy
configuration. This is usually done at the perimeter
 router/firewall using
iptables and destination NAT (or similar).

Whilst transparent proxying sounds attractive you CANNOT use this AND
authentication at the same time. Think about it; if you were
 connecting to
www.foo.com and got prompted for authentication credentials from
something other than www.foo.com when you weren't expecting
 it, would be
considered a man-in-the-middle type attack. However, if
 your browser is
expecting proxy authentication challenge (by being configured
 to use a
proxy) then it's all good. NTLM authentication only works on
 Windows and
only with IE. All other OS/Browser combinations use basic
 authentication
 - which means the users will be prompted for a
 user-id+password. This is a
protocol level restriction and comes up regularly on the
 squid users list.

BTW, if you're using basic authentication in an Active Directory
environment, the users will need to use DOMAIN\userid and their AD
password. IE will usually present a triple dialogue box
 for userid,
domain and password. You can configure squid to use BOTH
 NTLM and basic
authentication at the same time; that way IE users will be
 authenticated
transparently, with all other users (with REAL browsers) entering
 DOMAIN\userid+password.

E-mail me off list if you want some help with the fine tuning
 :) I am the
the proxy admin for our company - we use FreeBSD+Squid+Samba to
authenticate back to the Active Directorybut the
 squid+samba configs
are almost identical regardless of OS :)

We use a humble Cisco 1720 to load balance a pair of 2Mbps
 SDSL lines in the
office. The mechanism is BGRP. Basically we've set it up to do per
session load balancing: any given session can never consume
 more than
2Mbps. It's pretty basic but it works well :) YMMV.

There's a few ways you can achieve this effect with a linux
 gateway box but
most of the traffic we need to throttle in the office is
 web/ftp stuff so I
simply use squid's delay pools. All up the squid proxy
 plus the router
load balancing means our external web sites have never been
 unavailable due
to lack of bandwidth :) Our internal users and external
 web/ftp sites
 share the same 2x2Mbps connections.

My ISP has just implemented the new policy of removing all M$
 executables.
Zipped files are still ok. The result is heaven; my email
 downloads much
fazster and the daily viruses have stopped. The idea that
 .scr and .pif and
.bat files are all executables is farcical. Worse still, many
 newbies have
their file extensions switched off (it's the default!!) and
 so when they get
AnnaKornikova.jpg.scr they can't see the .scr and they think it's an
 essential picture for viewing.

Let's hope all ISPs act to discard these Windows executables
 asap. I have
passed on your comments to my ISP.

Down the track, this will mean an upsurge in .doc files
 carrying viruses
again. But think about this - if you were the CIO of a large
 company, do
you really think that documents and spreadsheets should be
 executable in any
way whatsoever? I think the answer is NO, documents should
 be just passive
data files by definition. Excel 3 was a passive spreadsheet
 and the format
is safe to this day. The idea that data files can execute on
 opening is a
frill that can easily be done away with. There should be a special
corporate version of M$ Office that does not execute macros,
 and it should
be heaps cheaper too, to make up for all the mayhem and
 inconvenience caused
 by the current version.

The problem for OpenOffice and the like is being bluffed into playing
catchup and being told it's not as good as Redmond yet. The quest for
endless frills is dangerous, the need for macros has already passed.

True Spamassassin is not the right tool in stopping viruses.
But what I do is run anomy with spamassassin. I stop all windows

[SLUG] SPAM

2003-09-28 Thread Robert Tillsley
All this talk about spam and the problem it causes and the debate over where
it should be stop has made me think.

I personally don't have the technical/infrastructure/legal expertise in
general or linux in particular to do a topic on it, but I was wondering
whether some net guru would be willing to do a session on it at one of the
upcoming SLUG meetings?

I'm sort of thinking that an overview on things like where it comes from
(countries, dodgy or lax providers etc), what could be done at a national or
international level to reduce its impact, what ISPs could be doing, what
companies and individuals could be doing. So not so much of an indepth
technical foray, but something that could help attendees see the scope and
the actions or inaction that are affecting the situation.

What do people think?

I do wish I had the understanding to put this together myself, but I don't.
Still what's been said on the thread lately has me thinking what can I do to
help SLUG? Hopefully I'll have an answer eventually.

Cheers

I've used NOD32 and Kaspersky (KAV) and found Kaspersky to be superior

The NOD32 software makes you pay for a per-user license to use it on

for as many users as you want.

All is not lost though you can buy a cheap 101 rubber

Also some computer parts shops sell them they are dead silent and you

[SLUG] Membership, CD, GST

Hi Guys

While I suspect the committee can answer this if I email them directly, I
thought others might be interested in the answer for tax purposes.

Basically I bought membership and a debain CD for a bargain of $30. I was just
wondering whether this was including GST or if the fees are GST exempt or
whatever. It doesn't say anything about GST on the receipt.

[SLUG] debian apt and jdk

2003-06-24 Thread Robert Tillsley [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi guys

I am trying to work out how to get a copy of the jdk for my woody system so
that I can fix some dependancy issues and hopefully eventually get a gui up.

I have the basic woody cd and mirror.aarnet.edu.au as sources, however when I
try to install something it asks for jdk 1.1.8 from the ibm site, which
doesn't work.

So I'm thinking, perhaps I can use another version or I can add another
source. Does anyone know another ftp server out there that has the imb 1.1.8
jdk?

I can't apt-get install debconf because it complains that it needs jdk. I
can't install a jdk cause that needs xfree86-common. I can't install that
because it needs debconf.

Does anyone know how I can get out of this vicious circle???

Can you post output from apt? debconf does *not* need jdk (!), so
something else is going on here which we need to nut out. :-)

Hmmm. Looks like your right, I had a reread of the error messages, it looks
like I just don't have an up to date source for debconf.

When I try to install xfree86-common it says that it depends on debconf
=1.2.9 but I only have 1.0.32

Right, I feel like I've progressed a few more cm along the learning curve :O)

I have mirror.aarnet.edu.au as one of my sources, shouldn't that have a recent
version of debconf?

Thanks for the help guys!

More helpful to see the actual lines, because they contain more
 information. :-)

Preferably not - what you'd really want is a source for a woody version
of the jdk. I'm not sure where to get that, or what your current source
is (please post the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list), but that sounds
 like the problem.

Must admit, I was hoping to avoid that as I'm emailing from a different system
and its going to be a bugger to type out. Hmm, perhaps its time to see if I
can mount my usb flash drive... I'll post this to the list in a sec to see if
you can spot a flaw.

In between emails I added the unstable ftp.au.debian and then it did update
debconf, (well its downloading now) so not sure if this will help or
complicate matters.

   Subject: [SLUG] Network Problem

   Hello All,

I have encountered a problem with our network.
Following is diagrams shows how our computers are connected.

 Internet
 |
 |
 ADSL Router/Firewall
   |
   |
  | |
   Switch Workstation1
  |

__|___
   | |
   Other Workstations Linux Server

The problem with our network is that, it stops functioning
   after about a
day or so, and then I have to restart the router and switch
   (switch-off
and switch-on) to resume normal operations. The linux server
   runs a web
server, and when this happens the browser from the
 external computer
says, network unreachable. I won't even be able to ping any of the
machines from any other machine in the network. I use all
 private IP
   addresses for all the machines.

Can anyone suggest where to look for?

[SLUG] Debian

2003-06-21 Thread Robert Tillsley [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi Guys

I just installed debian (well the bits that seemed to work).
I've been able to log into the console, but I wouldn't mind seeing if the GUI
is up.

All I can remember about how to get into a gui is xstart, but that doesn't
work. Anyone know what command I need?

 startx

If you haven't got it installed, run 'tasksel' as root
If your current setup config doesn't work run either 'xf86config' or
'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86' (xf86config is old, and the debconf
way will set things up like dri and is generaly better)

RE: [SLUG] Secondary MX record - To have or not

2003-06-19 Thread Robert Tillsley
Personally I wouldn't do without one unless email wasn't very important to
my organisation.

Having a secondary MX record (and of course a secondary mail server) means
that if your connection dies, or if you have to deal with a hardware or
major software failure you can take your mail server offline without losing
mail.

Having you're access provider act as the secondary is usually the easiest
way to go, and means if you're connection dies between you and your isp,
then the isp can still store your mail till your link is up.

 Folks,

A little Linux unrelated (but I suppose it is since I am using a Linux
server) but I have been having some discussions with a number
 of vendors
around the place regarding secondary MX records.

There seems to be two camps here - those that do not believe that they
are needed (and thus don't provide them) and those that believe that
they are a mandatory part of a redundant mail system.

I am sitting on the fence (I can see some merits to both sides of the
argument) but I was wondering what the opinion of the
 sluggers out there
is - would you install one and why ?

Re: [SLUG] courier

2003-06-17 Thread Robert Tillsley [EMAIL PROTECTED]
After going to the pub, I made it home and quickly had a look. Sure enough, no
c++ compiler was installed. There was a common compiler as well as g++, but
g++ sounds good, so I've gone with that. The version showed with the command
you suggested after I had installed it. So I'm letting it configure while I
sleep and hopefully it will be ready for me to have fun with make next.

Thanks

Re: [SLUG] Network

2003-06-08 Thread Robert Tillsley [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This is correct, fibre runs between buildings prevent fault currents from
faulty equipment, and induced or direct lightning strike transmission
 between buildings.

I've heard of some nasty incidents, though I've never been involved.

If you are paying someone else to lay the cables (most likely in this
situation) make sure they are data cablers who know what they are doing.
I've seen quite a few shonky jobs out there when an electrician thought
doing network cabling without any form of training or practice would be a
good idea (think cables terminated into Krone punch downs in any old order,
matching pins at each side, but not following colour codes printed on the
little labels, causing failure due to the twisted pairs being incorrectly
 used.

I think its worth spending serious dollars on good testing equipment like
Fluke's.

Don't forget that 1Gb copper is also available, which is quite economical
for things like servers, as the NICs for it are now under $100 for some
brands. Gigabit copper requires that the cables be either good Cat 5 or Cat
5e and up, but this shouldn't be a problem, as all reputable cablers lay a
minimum of Cat 5e for networks these days. Another thing to keep in mind is
that Gigabit copper uses all 4 pairs of the cable.

I must admit I've not dealt with Gb copper. I use cat5e for all copper anyway,
including standard patch cables. Its not much expensive.
Have you used Gb copper much? I'd be interested in your views of it. I've
heard that its pretty sensitive to cable flexing.

Cheers

 * Multimode Step Index (SI) - Cheap, widely used in LANs.
 * Multimode Graded Index (GI)
 * Single Mode (SM) - Good, widely used in telecommunications.

Note there are quite a few other variants of fibre out there, but they are
not relevant to basic LANs, and would be more a concern on DWDM systems.

Right, I said this, I should explain:

 /bin/ed

$() is a subshell, so that sets VISUAL to /bin/ed.

Now, to answer your question, it's not a permanent change. You need to do

Re: [SLUG] vipw

2003-06-08 Thread Robert Tillsley [EMAIL PROTECTED]

   export VISUAL=ed
 or
  export VISUAL=joe

 or whatever will do.

That said, vipw only adds a little locking
around your editor to make sure that not more than
one is editing it. If you're the only user I'd just
 edit direct: joe /etc/passwd

This is pretty useful to know. At the moment I'm doing this for my home
server. I'm also trying to develop the skills and experience so that I can
put linux/samba forward as a reasonable alternative to an NT4 domain or
Active Directory. If there are several administrators then being able to lock
the file so that only one person could use it at once would be good.

Moreoever, I'm not sure that any other passwd manipulation
tools (useradd, userdel, usermod) take any notice of vipw
locking so it's not worth much really. FWIW there's no
 vipw in Solaris anymore.

Ah. Well I suppose when you type in a one line command the odds of that
interfering with someone else doing the same thing are pretty small. Perhaps
that makes vipw a liability as someone who then saves the file will overwrite
changes others might have made with the commands you mentioned.

BTW, why aren't you using useradd, usermod, userdel?
Or even better whatever graphical user management tools
your dist. of linux gives you. ) e.g. redhat-config-users
 under redhat.

I'm following a how to make Samba act as a PDC guide. This is part of what it
mentions. perhaps I should read up on the useradd etc commands and see if I
can put in the same detail that is being suggested.
ie

sysname$:x:1200:300:Worksation:/dev/null:/bin/false
(obviously sysname is the name of the client system)

I'm running Suse 8.1*. I've managed to get the public folder working, or had
had managed that. I then put in all the pdc stuff, but now I can't add a
win2k box to the domain. It looks to me like the nmbd is running, but not
resolving anything. The Wink2k box says it might have a DNS prob when I try
to add it to the domain.
Still I might make a separate post about that after I've done some more
testing.

*I'm running Suse 8.1 cause I haven't gotten my debian CD from the SLUG or
from someone else who was going to get me some.

Thanks for the info

[SLUG] German characters in linux

Hi guys

I've been looking into being able to type accented characters in linux. This
is because I'm learning german and want to be able to type notes. In windows
it can be done by using alt and a numeric combo. I've done a bit of googling
and have come across some information suggesting I can use the control keys
in a particular combo with shift and then other keys. However it uses the
right control key. The main system I'm working on atm is a laptop that
doesn't have a right control key.

I've tried adjusting the file below with less than no clue, but it doesn't
seem to have worked. Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track?

[SLUG] sluglet notes backup and recovery

2003-06-08 Thread Robert Tillsley [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sluglets meeting 30-05-03

Backup and Recovery Notes

Hi Guys here are the notes that I took from the last sluglet. Hopefully they
make some sense:

Definition: hot backup. A copy or backup running on a media which can be
available quickly, ie archived on a secondary server or a hot swappable
harddrive etc. Often used as a `disposable media, ie not kept safe at all
costs.

Limitation of using tape to backup modern quantities of data: often unable to
hold anywhere near as much data as modern harddrives and drive arrays.

Getting backup happening
For businesses
For offices sending copies to other branches or buildings. Also as a large
scale option, having a remote system ready with recent data in a remote
location for almost instant backup.

Suggestion that ex-corporate backup drives can be available for reasonable
prices on ebay. Tapes, especially used ones are not as reliable as DVD or CD.
There was a warning against using tape compression.

Data mirroring through net connection.

Suggestion to use additional small servers for to create snap shots of a file
tree so that deletions can be enforced when restoring data.

Home
Suggestion for home backup to use a portable drive bay. (Personal thought
using something more flexible like a firewire connected external case).

Suggestion to keep a copy of data off site. Locations may include close
friends or family members.

Backup Options:

Historical reference to dump, the backing up of a file system (ie partition)
rather than directories.
Level 0 = full backup of a specified area
Level 1 = backup files that have changed since the last level 0
Level 2 = backup of changed files since last level 1
Level 3-5 etc.
2-5 are incremental, quick backup, slow restore, higher risk of failure as #
of media increase.
Tapes have a limited life span.

Differential backs up changed files since last level 0 backup.

On linux likely backup areas include:
/home
the machine configuration (/etc)
list of installed packages (some software is out there to produce a dump of
them)
/dev/conf ? Check

Partitioning can be used to place data on a separate partition to make it
possible to reinstall the distro without killind data. Placing on a separate
drive also makes a drive failure less of a pain.

Determine backup strategy based on size needs, how often the data is changed
and the time and money that can be spent on it.

Testing backup. Be sure that third parties can meet their claims

Backup versus disaster recovery.
A disaster is the complete failure of a system or environment. Hence a
disaster recovery plan requires more resources than just backing up software,
but can produce a quicker result in restoring entire systems.

For Reference:
Always Document procedures, including contact people, equipment location etc.
Make sure hard copies are available

Physical resistance to damage. Tapes are more resistant than hard drives in
situations such as dropping them.
For small amounts of data solid state media such as flash memory may be an
option.

Final comment: Data not backed up is almost guaranteed to be lost at some
point...

Remote storage with places like yahoos briefcase.

LVM and EVS were mentioned, but not in detail.
EVS extended volume ???

RAID ( drive mirroring, etc) can be used to recover from drive failure,
however not useful for retreiving data thats been over written or deleted.

snapshot (debian.net). Was mentioned

Re: [SLUG] Network

2003-06-07 Thread Robert Tillsley [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I am thinking of mounting a secondary switch(s) in the new building,
with an uplink to the existing network, however, what sort of uplink
 should it be:

 1. Is it worth putting fibre in?

Putting Fibre between separate buildings is something that I think is a must.
As I understand it, it provides some electrical separation between computers
in different buildings which can be pretty important in cases of lightening
strikes etc.

Bare in mind the cost of any trenching required, and how hard the buildings
are to work in. (this covers any type of cable of course). Modern buildings
can be easier to work with.

I also think its worth paying close attention to detail such as finishing,
making sure that in wall cavities that the cable isn't stressed and if its
layed across any ceiling expanse that its suspended on wire. And
cosmetically, consider how the cable is going to enter the building, the
amount of hideous looking jobs that for an extra hour of time could have
looked so much nicer.

 2. What does it take to make a gigabit network instead of 100Mbit?

Depending on what switches you use, you may either need new switches or if you
have modular switches you'll need gigabit adapters. You'll need the fibre
layed (usually the more cores you can afford the better. It provides you with
redundancy and room for future expansion). Modern switches and patches us SC
(2x rectangular ends) as apposed to ST (2x a bit like old coax).

1GB cards are usually quite a bit more expensive and often have less ports
than 100mb cards.

There are also different types of cable for different distances. For the life
of me, I can't remember their names right now (sick on a long weekend,
bugger!) Multi-mode is one.

I usually prefer 1 GB connectors between buildings, but consider the sort of
data that is going to be accessed. If its a lot of web browsing then you may
find 100MB doesn't get saturated at all.

Also no matter what, make sure your switches have the backplane speed to
handle the maximum amount of data that the cards can put through it. Nothing
like having GB connections limited by a switch.

I hope that made some sense.

Cheers

[SLUG] vipw

2003-06-07 Thread Robert Tillsley [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi guys

I'm looking into setting up a samba PDC. I've got a help file that I'm working
through. It mentioned adjusting users using vipw. So I've been trying to do
that. I've found the vim documentation on my system and I've been reading
through it, taking a few notes etc. However it seems like a bit of a pain to
use. Would I be able to use an editor like kate to add or modify entries in
etc/passwd?

Cheers

[SLUG] open office calc syntax question

2003-03-21 Thread Robert Tillsley
Hi guys

I used open office to open an excel spreadsheet that I've written before. I
was pretty impressed that the vlookups worked well, but I've encountered a
little bit of a problem.

I have a cell (E5) which has the following: =+SUM(C5+D5). What it does in
excel is to add the values of the cell which are '+2 and '+1 respectively.
What it looks like in excel from a print point of view is +2 +1
+3
I had a look through the open office help, but wasn't able to see any
solutions. I suspect I'm just using the wrong syntax.

Any help would be appreciated,

Rob T

RE: FW: [SLUG] desktop publishing software

2003-03-19 Thread Robert Tillsley

 Enter the fairy god mother

Yes you can export to PDF the last developers release it
 actually worked
 well (first release was 'sub-optimal').

Other cool things are that slides can be exported to SWF
 (flash) files.

Coming soon to a server near you...

Ok perhaps I'll have to keep an eye out and update as soon as its ready for
my little suse system.

Thanks

Rob

RE: [SLUG] Mounting a floppy drive, RH8.0

2003-03-18 Thread Robert Tillsley
what about mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /x

where x equals the folder you are mounting it to?

Subject: [SLUG] Mounting a floppy drive, RH8.0

I've just installed RH 8.0 on the laptop.

I tried to keep what went on to a minimum (in truth, I do not
understand what many of the applications do) but the installation
 did, at least, complete itself.

I wanted to move some files from a floppy to the hard disc, so I
followed the booklet and, at root, typed

 mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

 and was told

mount: fs type msdos not supported by kernel

 So, was it

 1) something I should have included in the installation?
If so, I'll go back to the discs and pick up the missing bit if
someone could tell me what it is, or is it simply

 2) something I have to tell the system?

 Any help ...

 Bill Bennett.

[SLUG] Suse 8.1 plus laptop

2003-03-04 Thread Robert Tillsley
Hi guys

I have a laptop running Suse 8.1. When I run the battery monitor for KDE it
says:

Your computer seems to have a partial ACPI installation probably ACPI was
enabled, but some of the sub-options were not enabled - you need to enable
at least 'AC Adapter' and 'Control Method Battery' and rebuild your kernal.

Any suggestions as to how this can be fixed? I'm pretty new to linux, and
don't really want to have to rebuild the kernal. Is there something I missed
during the suse install?

Regards

Robert T
