You might look for a used Airtronics Infinity radio. There is a spring
loaded "snap roll" button conveniently located on the upper left side of
the transmitter case that is well suited for hand launch presets. Just
program in the amount of rudder and/or elevator you need when the switch is
held down. I have used this in the past on conventional hlg models and it
worked well.

Dave,

You said:

Using a 50 ft piece of rubber and some nylon line (50 ft ?) to create an
upstart (or mini-hi-start), what is the normal max stretch allowed. I heard
3 to 1. Is that 100 ft of stretch making the final length of the rubber
150 ft or is the stretch itself 3 to 1 making the stretch 150 ft and the
final length of the rubber 200'.

Perhaps the article:

might provide some insight concerning your question.

Also, Rich Hollyday's web site includes some data on force versus

The tubing stretches rather benignly out to 3.5 times, i.e., a

Re: [RCSE] Launch Presets on A Cockpit

2001-02-12 Thread Daniel Boyer

Okay, I got a Cockpit TX Saturday and so far I love it... my only complaint
was that I could not figure out how to set a launch preset... I emailed
Karlton and asked if it was possible which he replied that it was... I
emailed him back after playing with the TX and the manual for a while and
asked him how b/c I couldn't figure it out... I emailed him late lastnight,
so he hasn't had a chance to reply to me yet, but in the mean time I have
been mulling over it, and I think I have a solution if Karlton doesn't have
a simple answer...

Here is what I have come up with (only partially tested), please let me know
if you see fault in my logic/design:
As I see it there are two aspects that need setting for the launch: elevator
and rudder (although rudder only really for Tip Launch) so I will do this in
two parts...
1st the elevator) I tried this one late lastnight and it works fine for and
elevator only preset: The cockpit has three Mixes called throttle
compensation, spoiler compensation, and flap compensation; all of these
basically compensate the elevator setting for the speed changes caused by
the use of the corresponding control (throttle, spoilers, flaps). Since my
ships are all rudder/elevator ships, so I chose to use the flaps switch (3
position) for my preset (if you use flaps, then you will have to use one of
the other controls and modify it in a similar way to the rudder below)...
Basically you set a percentage of compensation; when you flip the flaps
switch you can watch the elevator move to compensate, but since there are no
flaps the result is a preset elevator switch...

Now that was the easy part...

2nd the Rudder) Here is where things get a little more complicated (at
least for me... I have not tried this yet, but don't see why it wouldn't
work)... For this one you are going to use the "Combi" switch on the TX
which switches the Rudder/Aileron mixing in and out... I plug my Rudder
Servo into the aileron position on the rx (like most people, I would
imagine), so the rudder stick isn't actually doing anything (now if you have
an aileron/elevator/rudder ship this won't work)... Go in and set the
aileron/rudder mixing to say 100% (like I said I haven't done this yet as I
came up with it this morning at work), then go into the servo menu and set
the rudder servo's center to what ever you want the preset at... Now when
you flip the combi switch, your rudder settings should force your aileron
servo (your real rudder) to the preset value...

Now these two setting are on different switches... now for the trip to Radio
shack to find a double pole switch that will fit on/in the TX and then
connect the wires in such a way that when you flip this new switch, it
effectively switches the combi switch and the flap switch (or what ever
control your are using) at the same time.

Looking for comments, Daniel

[RCSE] How to :Installing Volz Wing Max servos

I cut a block of Spyder foam or 'colored' foam to fit the hole, I try to sand
the surface touching the top skin to some what match the curve of the top
skin. Then I mix up some 5 min epoxy and glue the block into the hole. It
FILLS the hole pretty much up completely.

Then I set my Dremel router base (the new cheap round one) to the depth of
the Micro Maxx (since the mount is flush with the bottom of the servo) and
route the foam out to create a nice filler base to glue the Volz mount to.
This helps prevent 'oil canning' of the top skin and put the servos output
arm in perfect geometry to the Surface's control horn.

Always put your link into the 2 hole arm on the servo and one notch higher on
the surface horn. Never use a longer horn on any servo. Longer horns
amplify any gear lash and bearing play and skin movement at the servo and
reduce the servo torque you were so happy to have paid for.

The longer horn connection on the surface horn adds to your torque and
reduces lash movement. And always try to get your servo flush with the
bottom skin when using bottom linkage connections.

Okay ? :-)

[RCSE] Euro Trash!!

2001-02-12 Thread Charles Miller

Good Morning
I guess people should know that in the full scale glider world... The
Germans have it !!! Look at the most competitive gliders of the world,,
They are German!!! My glider ASW20,, German
This has something to do with liability of the product... Well that's
one thing... It seems like the Americans can't afford the liability... I
am sure they could come up with something competitive...
But this goes way back in history,, The Germans are the pioneer's of
Quality and performance

I don't think we should bash the Euro gliders. Maybe we should make more
effort in producing competitive gliders I fly an Emerald...Saphire,,
American But I have Euro stuff to.Xantipa, Eraser Extreme!!. I
appreciate all of them. And look at them simply as gliders... No
Judgment! The way I look at it? All the more power to them ! We have
the same opportunity to come up with a better idea..
I will also drive a Toyota until the Americans can beat that!!

Another point is. What do we like?? How use to a model are we??? The
contests show that it really doesn't matter what we fly,, They all seem
to win! The pilot ofcorse has everything to do with that
Lots of people think if they get a new state of the art glider that it
will give them big advantages ,,, Maybe??
I have seen Novice pilots get new gliders. Only to watch them beat them
up. Not really seeing the true performance the glider has to offer

I know I get tired of seeing a new glider come out every six months...
Wondering if that's the one?? Well not many prove to be the one, They
kinda come and go,, (like disco) I got the Emerald because it has been
around for years.. (like an old Neil Young song) It works!! I got the
Xantipa because of it's flying characteristics..And the wing is
beautiful!! It still is one of my favorite gliders to fly. I still have
three! The Xantipa didn't hit the top ten. But until you fly one your
missing out on a good fun glider

I just like Models that fly well,,
I don't care who makes them!!

Re: Re: [RCSE] Upstart stretch?

2001-02-12 Thread Bill Harris

This has been a good thread.

Here is what I need to do: at our slope site we have to launch 14-26 ounce foamies
(many times Zagi wings) off the slope into 10-25 mph winds. Trees down below generate
turbulence to 8-10' above the launch zone, so what we need is an upstart/bungee system
to pop the planes up to an altitude of 20-25' into the zone of lift. From the lip of
the slope to the road is 60 feet, so that defines the maximum stretch of the
upstart/bungee. Initial tests with a shortened Dynaflite 2m Upstart (3/16" surgical
latex) showed that it didn't have enough oomph to launch into a stiff wind. I'll try
to double the tubing for the next test.

The idea I'm toying with is 15' of tubing (stretched 3x to 45') with 15' of line for a
maximum stretch of 60' and an altitude of some 30'. I'm guessing that 4-6 pounds of
pull would be adequate.

If I can't get the doubled upstart surgical tubing to give the required pull at the
required extension, I have some tubing from an NSP "standard" Pinnacle histart that I
can also try. I don;t know if there is a minimum length of tubing that can be used,
but I don't think that 15' of tubing will be too short.

Am I on the right track here?

You can select PPM or PCM with the 8013. You can use either receiver
and you don't need to change the module to do it. PPM and PCM are both
FM. They just use different techniques to encode the data being sent.

Re: [RCSE] How to :Installing Volz Wing Max servos

2001-02-12 Thread Matt Lydon

Actually, Gordy, the torque remains the same for a
given surface movement, and the same for lash.
If you have a 1/2 inch servo arm and a 1/2 inch
control horn (from the pivot point), it's a 1:1 ratiotorque at the surface =
servo torque. Increase or decrease the length of the arms, you get the same
results.
Now if you have a 1/2 inch servo arm and a 1"
control horn, it's a 1:2 ratiotorque at surface=double the servo torque
(minus drag), lash=half lash at servo, but TRAVEL is HALF as much. The
other way around (long servo arm, short surface arm), you get a 2:1 ratio, with
half the torque, double the lash, double theTHROW.

With your setup, how can you get 90 degree flap
throw? It's a bitch for me.

Matt

PS, I like your foam technique, and will use it in
my next ship

One marked PCM and FM , model # NET-J72P .
One only marked FM , model # NET-J72M .
One only marked AM , model # NET-J72M .

Now I've used the PCM J72P for both FM Hitec rx's (pos shift) and JR PCM
rx's
with no problem .
The J72M AM module works fine with JR , Futba and Hitec AM rx's ( selected

My question is about the J72M NOT marked PCM , I've only used it on a FM
(PPM) JR rx . Can this module also run a PCM rx or is part or all of the PCM
system
intergrated into the module ?

You engineer types drive me nuts :-) However thank you for all that, you are
right on the leverage thing. Your question above is a perfect reason for
why I answered the thread... and wrote the article.

I ran into a nice guy who had a third hand molded Psycho. No one who owned
it, could get a straight launch or a great launch. Obviously that made no
sense and in general none of the owners liked its performance...and it
was all due to your above observation.

The servos were glued to the top skins of the wing, and the servos had longgg
arms to get that beloved 90. It had the original Volz MM's in the wings so
there should have been plenty of power to hold the flaps for launch, yet on
launch it was easy to see both flaps go up, or depending on the release angle
the left or right.

The new owner was perplexed and couldn't understand why the Volz didn't seem
to have the holding power, when on the bench you couldn't get one to move
when plugged in by itself. (but that's a different topic)

They asked me to take a look at the plane (since I actually listen to guys
like Sage, JW, DP when they talk about stuff like that :-).

The first thing I addressed was the wild launch. I had him set the preset
then launch and asked everyone to watch the flaps. Yep they were not holding
and the launch was exciting the wrong way.

Then with the plane on and in his hand, flaps down fully, I reached over and
lifted one flap easily almost all the way up! (obviously he needed a 5 cell
pack ...not.)

Then with the flaps up, I showed him that he had nearly 1/2" of slop (no
kidding!).

On examination of his mounting and linkage, it looked like there was a bunch
of 'slop' at the servo output shaft...but closer exam showed that the way the
servos were 'glued' in was allowing the upper skin to 'oil can' some.

But the big culprit was his servo arm connection and his surface connection.
It was in a four hole arm at the end at the servo and at the bottom of the
surface horn hole.
Simply by switching his servo arm hole to the second hole and the surface
horn to the top hole, virtually all of the 'slop' disappeared and I could no
longer overcome the servos by lifting the flap.

A bunch of Nose weight was pulled (that was someones fix for the wild
launching), and the plane was launched a bunch, straight and true. Next was
to move the tow hook back to where it belonged (another 'supposed' fix for
the wild launches) and suddently the previous owners were feeling kind of
bummed!

Oh yeah, what about getting 90 with that link set up? Do it with the radio.
Travel adjustment. Also with setting the servo arm leaning a notch toward
the flap. More importantly do what Ben Clerx convinced me of at Visalia...
don't bother with 90 flap. Less turned out to be more as in a more
predictable speed approach on the landings. Full flap never really
'hits-the-brake" like we hope for in those "Yeow! I'm coming in to hot!!!"
situations.

And thats about all I have to say about that :-)

[RCSE] Re: Foamie Reminiscing

2001-02-12 Thread Bill Swingle

Ah, yes. The illustrious Foameron. I loved that plane. It was my "Zen" plane
(as mentioned in a John Roe post a few years ago). I didn't really need a
transmitter to fly it. My thoughts were sufficient. Damn, I loved that plane.

I built three of them in various configurations. Joe Galletti at Torque and
Recoil was a great help by supplying me with whatever part alteration I may
have needed.

I spec'd version three (Floateron) in nothing but thermal lift. I battled
verified 50MPH winds with version 2 (stock configuration) and only 4 ounces of
ballast (wished for more!). I even wrote an article about that day.

Another pilot's Foameron actually sheared off the nose of my DAW P51.
Amazingly, it didn't even dent the Foameron.

With just two planes I was prepared for nearly any wind condition that I was
likely to see. Parts were ridiculously cheap and the plane would break down
small enough to fit in the box is came in. I loved my Foamerons.

RE: [RCSE] Xterminator Question Update

2001-02-12 Thread Daniel Boyer

Well I have two things to report:
1st) I found out that if you take the case off of the Multiplex 7channel IPD
rx it is the same weight (actually a gram or two less) than a caseless 555.
(I had just replaced the antenna on both of them with some 33gauge wire of
equal length.)

2nd) After receiving all the emails, I came home and made up a 3 cell pack
of 50mahs and 110mah Nicads (Didn't get a chance to run over to Mr.Nicad and
get some NiMHs)... after replacing the antenna wire on my rxs and building
the packs, I stuck the 50mah pack in w/ the rx, put the "hood" back on and
screwed on the wings... tested CG and it was with in 2mm of the suggest
value (I just need to slide the battery forward a little... still have an
inch in front of it)... set in on the digital scale and... 7.4oz!
WooHoo!!!

Now I just can't wait for some of this stupid snow to melt so that I can
get out in the field and give it a throw (I tried walking in a field this
weekend and realized that the snow is a lot deeper than it looks...I turned
around after about three steps)...

Thanks for everyone's help,
Daniel

Re: [RCSE] Scale Retracts

2001-02-12 Thread Dave Wenzlick

FWIW.
Some pictures and text of when I installed a retract in a Graupner Discus 2b.

http://www.users.qwest.net/~slickraft/asmd2_1.htm

 * Multiplex sells a retract unit that I believe is designed to fit the
ASH26 and is reasonably priced. Is this a quality unit, or would it be
better to look for a Hock retract or similar brand?

Multiplex unit is fine. I also like the retracts sold by Icare and Hobby Club.
http://www2.jonction.net/~icare/scale_acces.htm
http://www.hobbyclub.com/framespage.htm

 * How are these units attached internally to the fiberglass airframe to
provide rigidity and support without adding alot of extra weight?

I used shoe goo and similar flexible glues like PFM or Liquid Welder. Where
possible I have tied it in to the main spar for support.

 * What about cutting out the wheel doors from the fuselage? How are they
hinged to the fuselage in order to open and close properly with the
actuation of the retract, and does this require a seperate linkage?

See my photos on the above link. I prefer the small nylon hinges to any other
method I have tried. I use very small springs or rubber bands to close the
doors.

 * Will a typical retract assembly require a special retract servo or will a
 standard size servo suffice?

I prefer a 180 degree dedicated retract servo.

 * Are there any "How To" books, online articles or websites detailing
installation of retracts in scale fiberglass sailplanes?

I think John Derstine's site might have some info also.
