 Hi folks,
I'm going to attend the ECHLG contest up in North

week, and I finally have all of my planes working.
 However, I still
don't have a box built for my Sportube. This is a
 mostly obvious
exercise, but I feel like I should try to leverage
 the inventiveness
of others who might have come up with superior
 packing solutions.

I took this picture of Oleg's cardboard nice box
 last year:

My situation won't be as pretty as his, because I
 have three planes
which all have differing amounts of dihedral and two
 with
non-removable stabs. I'm confident that I can make
 it work given the
materials I have, but it would be nice to see if
 there are any other

[RCSE] Volz servo arms and arm screws

2004-10-18 Thread Thomas Koszuta

Guys,

Anybody have the specs on the
screws that hold the arms onto the Volz Micro Maxx X servos? I broke a
servoarm and lost the screw at the slope. JR arms appear to fit, but
the screw is not the same as any I have.

 Any east coast suppliers for

[RCSE] Volz servo arms and arm screws..and everything else :-)

2004-10-18 Thread GordySoar

I have all parts for Volz servos. I do all the repairs in the USA at
N/C labor as I do it as part of my hobby...and Michael Volz is a very good
friend of mine. And I have used Volz myself for about the last 8
years. So if you need some parts let me know. Shipping USPS Priority mail
is $5 (postage plus the box). Arm sets are $5 and the 'Pro-arm' (2 hole
arm supplied on the servos) is $3 each (Screw is free with arm or arm
sets).

I ship the same day someone needs something...if I am home. I
travel... alot :-) Tennessee this week...but I'll take a few arms and
screws with me.

[RCSE] The draw backs to building a box for sport tube

2004-10-18 Thread GordySoar

The Sportube is slippery.
And that causes it to slide off the conveyor at the airplane, going up
and down. Adding weight to it only makes things worse. Also when it leaves
the trailer and gets on the high speed conveyors inside the terminals, similar
crashing goes on.

I have about 100 flights with the Sportube and the best protection for your
sailplane parts is lots of layers of bubble wrap. Specially in the middle
and on the heavier wheel end.

I have NEVER had a part damaged from compression and I carry two
Pikes, Super-Stand, Bungee and its nails.

I have had inspector vandalism to my models.

Adding an aluminum tube to keep them from over closing the end, a sort of
length limit helps.

You should always be present while they inspect (if its possible, sometimes
they do inspections behind the walls at some airports (Fresno). Also go to
Target and get a TSA Approved Lock. It has combination and key slot. The
key is standard to all TSA check points. I have not done that part yet but
will because they have managed to lose the lock, clips and tie wraps I have used
lately. Not sure if there is a TSA lock that will fit.

Hey Guys,
I have an Icom IC-R2 for sale. It has all the 72 Mhz air band
frequencies pre-programmed for R/C use.

The radio covers from .5 Mhz to 1300 MHz, AM, FM, and WFM (WFM is
usally TV stations and FM broadcast stations). The radio is computer
programmable. I've also found it has *great* audio, nice and loud,
especially for such a small radio. It runs off two AA batteries. It is
like new condition with no scratches.

Full detail for the radio can be found here:

Asking $150 obo.

[RCSE] V tail angle?

2004-10-18 Thread David Nasatir
How will a 120 degree rather than a 110 degree angle of the V tail
affect performance?

OK, so I'm hard at work on my 2 meter pod and boom V tail hand
launch/slope soarer built according to the strictest TLAR criteria.. I
thought I had everything properly rigged to get a 110 degree angle on
the V tail but, like the craftsman, himself, somethings seem to have
sagged. So now I have a 120 degree angle. I do have ailerons but will
I have enough yaw stability? Should I rip off the empennage and try
again, or will I be able to compensate in flight?

Note: I never enter competitions, I just like to go hang with the guys
who do and have an excuse to watch and listen to them.

Thanks.

[RCSE] Re: LISF Annual Aerotow will be held on Saturday October 16, 2004

2004-10-18 Thread fredt

Due to the high winds and possibility of some early morning rain this
Saturday, the LISF Aerotow will be held on Sunday (our alternate day).
We have two beautiful runways cut out for us. The grass is the
shortest I've ever seen. It's large enough for a full size STOL
aircraft. The adjacent area was cut last week by the town. It is
short enough for landings.

We will have 3 tow planes - a 1/3 scale Spacewalker with a 3W-60
engine, a 1/4 scale L19 Bird Dog with a twin 300 4-stroke, and a
Pegasus with a 100 Brison twin.

Sunday's weather should be sunny and seasonable. Hope to see all of
you there.

Re: [RCSE] trainer cord use...

2004-10-18 Thread Jim Prouty
Brent,
It depends on the radio that you're using but you usually do have to trim
both radios. One exception that I know of is the Stylus which uses all
settings from the master radio. You'll also have to check into the
programming for the brand radio that you're using. Easiest way is to plug
in the buddy box and pass control to it and see if the mixing follows or not.

I've never pulled the crystal from the TX of the buddy box. Just make sure
that whoever is on the buddy box doesn't turn on the power.

Hope this helps,
Jim

Re: [RCSE] trainer cord use...

2004-10-18 Thread regis

The neutrals need to be synchronized. If you can reduce throws on
the student box, do it. Some systems can designate the 'channels'
allowed to opperate on the trainer TX. At least at first the
instructor will be taking off and landing, so the student need only
pitch and roll channels. Regis

Yes. You do this by holding both transmitters and switching back

 changes when you switch.

 | do they both need all the same mixing set up (eg, elevon, etc)?

Yes, unless you've got a high end `master' radio which can decode
the
slave signal then apply it's mixes to it. The Futaba 9C can do it,
and I don't think many other radios can (but I can't be sure.)

If your radio isn't one that can do this, you just need to make sure
that the controls do the same things on both radios.

 | Is it considered safer to pull the crystal from the trainer

Yes, though that's not really needed. I don't know about Hitec, but
with Futaba you generally don't even turn the buddy box on. If you
do
have to turn the buddy box on, I'd suggest removing the crystal or
module just to be safe, though they should turn off the transmitter
on
 their own.

Re: [RCSE] So Cal this w/e

2004-10-18 Thread Fred Sage
OK, I've thought of a new game that might interest Daryl tomorrow night at
SWSA. Let's call it stab for the dollars in the dark. Here's the way it
might work. All the players would put a dollar into a small stack in the
landing zone at the beginning of the round. If there's 20 contestants,
they'd be 20 one dollar bills in a neat stack in the landing zone. Since
this is a night event and since the landing zone is green grass at SWSA,
the dollar bills would virtually disappear against the grass background.
The only illumination allowed to help see the dollars would be the
flashlight you'd mount on your glider along the longitudinal axis to act as
a landing light. If you have a sufficiently bright flashlight and it's
mounted correctly to illuminate your glide path and if you're able to fly a
nice smooth glide slope, then you'd be able to see the dollars as you
approach for landing. However, any deviation from a perfect glide slope
and line up would slew the narrow beam of the flashlight away from the
dollars as you make corrections. You'd literally end up taking a stab for
the dollars in the dark at the spot where you thought the dollars were.
The closest to the dollars takes them for the round with the round being
over after all participants have their turn. Contestants in subsequent
rounds fly in the order of their finish in the previous round with the
winner flying last. The winner of the previous round would fly for free in
the next round. Having a twisted mind, here's the kicker. A three minute
precision flight is also required with the flight score decrementing at one
point per second. Scoring would be simple and could even be done in your
head by deducting the number of inches from the dollars during your landing
from your precision score to determine your round score. A perfect round
would be 180 points which would be a three minute flight minus zero points
because you stuck the dollars. If you're more than 15 feet from the
dollars, your round score would be negative because you'd be losing more
landing points than are available from flight time (15'X12=180 points).
Cylumes or night ops lights could be used to help orient the glider off the
winch. However, pilots flying foamy or expendable gliders probably
wouldn't make the time with the added payload. In addition, those that
mounted a large flashlight in order to get max illumination would also
suffer a significant performance penalty through both weight and drag and
might not make the time. It would be a delicate balance between making
the flight time and being able to see the dollars while landing. Those that
don't make smooth approaches or who make hard dork landings would suffer as
the flashlight would probably have to be replaced or at least remounted
between rounds. Since we'd be risking our $1,000+ gliders in this
environment, it would certainly put the thrill of competition back into the
occasion. Finally, whoever's particularly adept at this task would walk
away with some cash after several rounds (not enought to replace a damaged
glider but certainly better than just bragging rights).

Hey, maybe I've thought of a TD format where pilots won't be bored but
it's still a landing contest. Now if we just add a requirement of one beer
per round to the format, we'd really have a winner. (CD's, don't tell the
AMA about this last provision in your sanction request).

All tongue in cheek of course;

Re: [RCSE] Security issues and R/C models

2004-10-18 Thread regis

Hi Keith, Are you back east yet? Everything you say is true but to
borrow a prase from the NRA, if you ban model planes, only the
terrorists will have r/c models. One of the clubs I belong to flies
on the grounds of the Air Force Communications facility (antenna farm
outside Washington, D.C.) that handles sensitive com. We were locked
out after 9/11 – understandably - but the commander of Andrews AFB
came to the conclusion that it was better to have concerned people
(eyes and ears) around then not. (Especially now when are forces
have been stretched so thin – Andrews AFB has replaced the Air Police
at the gates with civilian contract personnel). Many of the club
members are military or ex-military and have security training.
Eliminating the terrorist threat is unrealistic (70 some arson
related fires in the D. C. area and the police have no clues).
Educated vigilant human observers are not unrealistic but a
necessity.

If I were interested in taking someone out via RC, I'd use one of the

Thanks.

You can easily use an electric glider as an accurate targeting
anti-personnel weapon

With a payload capacity of less than a pound its not going to be that
effective. There's also not that much room in the fuse for that payload,
especially if you want to keep the CG within a controllable range.
Landing it on the spot when the tape's in front of you isn't that difficult
(landing on time -- well). Its a lot more difficult to hit a remote

Your're getting stuff confused. GPS, the GPS that we can buy, has a rather
low update rate. It only updates once per second, too slow to do precision
targeting. You need to combine it with some quality inertial guidance kit.
The autopilots sold by FMA are optical wing levellers, not inertial guidance
systems.
I'm not saying that this kit is impossible to own, its just not over the
counter at the moment. If it were then we'd have a major problem with
Thermal Duration contests -- its bad enough having gyros keeping the planes
on line during the approach, the last thing we want is something that can
precisely autoland the planes for us.
To quote one of your presidents -- The only thing you have to fear is fear
itself. Yes, keep your eyes and ears open, but also keep a sense of
proportion.

(BTW -- You might find a visit to Israel interesting -- its full of people

I thought that if they were found interfering with other

In general this is the case with any commercial product or service
that emits radiation. However, the FCC's intent in this case
apparently is to give power companies a free pass to radiate across
the entire 2-30 mhz spectrum, remediating their interference only if
those affected can win a court battle. (Actually, the present BPL
specs probably wouldn't affect RC planes operating on 72, as no 72
mhz energy would be radiated by power lines). The military, forest
service, emergency services, police and fbi, and numerous private
companies including military contractors, all filed briefs opposing
the deployment of BPL. In some BPL tests, deployment has been
abandoned because of interference. In others, the companies have
decided that the idea is uneconomic. A Carnegie-Mellon study of BPL
economics suggests that it will cost the power company about $40 per
subscriber per month in urban areas, more than the retail price
charged by competing internet providers. The costs in rural areas
are expected to be much higher.

Despite all this, there will doubtless be some companies who will
try it, so a long battle lies ahead for those who oppose BPL. It is
very possible that some day the HF spectrum will be gone, filled
only with the buzz of radiation that would have been illegal until
last Thursday. This noise, similar to what you hear on your AM car
radio when you tune between stations and race the motor, shall
henceforth be called Powell noise.

Re: [RCSE] Broadband Over Powerline approved

2004-10-18 Thread Tom Broeski
Frequency Committee Advisory
(Added 2/17/04)
Action taken by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has resulted in
a unanimous vote by
the commissioners to approve a Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM)
regarding the use of
Broadband Over Power Lines (BPL). The announcement, which occurred February
12, 2004, follows
action taken on the subject in 2003 referred to as a Notice of Inquiry.

During the past several months references to BPL have appeared in AMA
publications. The most
recent can be found in the Technical Director's column in the February issue
of Model Aviation.
References have also been made in the On the Fly column in the magazine
and on the AMA Web
site.

The concept involved in BPL centers around the transmission of broadband
information over the
common power lines which serve homes and businesses. Such operations would,
in the words of the
FCC, be an important step toward increasing the availability of broadband
in rural and
underserved areas because power lines reach virtually every home and
community in the country.

Unfortunately, this type of transmission creates a condition in which radio
frequency radiation
may be emitted from the power line! Please understand, that as of this date,
AMA has no solid
evidence that BPL can or will cause interference problems to our operations.
The concept has been
used by power companies for many years in order to send peak power commands
to shut down devices
in homes and businesses.

In the initial Notice of Inquiry issued by the FCC during 2003, the
frequencies being considered
at that time for use with this type of transmission were situated between
1.8 MHz and 80 MHz.
This of course, encompasses all the frequencies currently designated for
model use. Knowledge of
the plan prompted AMA to file with the FCC, indicating our concern regarding
the potential for
interference to our operations. Further, we urged that the interference
potential be researched
prior to BPL being allowed. Contrary to the historical approach taken by the
FCC, the current
NPRM action suggests their desire is to forge ahead with the concept and
then attempting to
resolve interference issues as they may arise. While this does not appear to
be a reasonable,
logical or safe approach, the NPRM may be an attempt by the FCC to gather
technical information
from those parties which may be potentially affected by BPL.

It should be noted that the actual rule making document is not yet
available, so key elements
including the actual frequencies involved, are as yet unknown. We cannot
begin to assess the
overall impact until that document is made public. Be assured, that just as
in 1992 with the FCC
92-235 rule making which proposed the addition of new frequencies in our
band, we will subject
the document to careful scrutiny and determine an appropriate course of
action.

We are currently working through our attorney who represents AMA before the
FCC. We have been
assured that we join a very large group of communications related industries
and groups who are
voicing concerns regarding the proposal. These voices include ARRL (Amateur
or Hams) and the
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). They recognize that a solid
communication link for
use in times of homeland security issues and natural disasters must be
relatively free from
interference. Studies by the ARRL have indicated the radio frequency noise
levels which may be
created by BPL operations could be harmful to such a link. We currently are
establishing a
liaison with ARRL and other concerned groups in an effort to gather
information.

It is hoped that the actual rule making document will be available for study
soon. In the
interim, we will continue to gather information, not only from the important
studies conducted by
ARRL, but from contacts we have made with one of the BPL test studies being
performed in the
United States.

Chairman Michael Powell has stated, I am confident that the proposals we
adopt today balance the
potential benefits of BPL services and give careful consideration of the
potential interference
from BPL operations by establishing new requirements that will help minimize
harmful interference
that may occur and guidelines for measurement of radio frequency (RF)
emissions from carrier
current systems. Unfortunately, at present the Academy is not in a position
to properly assess
the meaning of minimize or may in that statement, relative to any impact
on our activities.

Members may obtain additional information by visiting the FCC Web site at
www.fcc.gov and the
ARRL Web site at www.arrl.org. While these sites will not provide any
information directly
relating to possible impact on our operations, they will provide insights
into the matter as a
whole. It is the current AMA position that any individual member comments to
the FCC are
premature at this time due to the current lack of definitive information. As
it becomes available
and after it has been

[RCSE] The Original Pumpkin Fly- CSS 25th anniversary

2004-10-18 Thread Barry Andersen
WEATHER! - always an impossible task for the CD. Online weather
reports keep guys away when the weather's bad. I think those that came
would acknowledge a fun weekend in spite of the wind and a bit of rain
on Saturday.

Since it rained on Friday, poured rain on Monday in Cincinnati, I guess
we should be grateful for reasonable (sort of) weather last weekend.
Saturday was very windy, our contests usually draw 30 to 40 fliers; 9
intrepid souls showed up for Saturday's grand adventure. Of the 9, 3
are level V, 4 level IV; every pilot had a time in the 2 minute range
- winds average 20 + gusty. Challenging conditions to say the least.
We started the day with a 6 minute task due to the wind. Guys went out
and found some wave with lift, almost everyone made time. Moved the
task to 8 minutes next round- 5:08 max time- with lots of 3 minute
times- moved back to 6 for the rest of the day- flew six rounds - very
few maxs the rest of the day. Happily, we discussed the value of the
trophies, and the value of our toys. No serious damage to anyones
plane.

Sunday promised to be better weather and 19 (not 20) pilots showed up.
Again, the wind played a real factor, but now 10 to 15 + . We had
some thermal activity, some wave work and tough soaring again. Of the
19 pilots, all but one had a 3 minute or less flight during the day;
some very nasty sink around. Another day of no hurt planes in despite
an off field miraculous landing. We tried those midwest seeded
man-on-man longer times, 6, 8 then 10. Marc Gellart got the long time,
only guy to get near the 10 minute max at 9:57. Given the skill levels
of the guys flying, this was no landing contest. Talking to guys,
everyone seemed pumped to get hooked and work some air for a max, it
really took all your soaring skill both days.

Gordy Stahl (yes he has a last name) got the overall champion award.
See the pixs on our website soon.

How will a 120 degree rather than a 110 degree angle of the V tail affect
performance?

OK, so I'm hard at work on my 2 meter pod and boom V tail hand launch/slope
soarer built according to the strictest TLAR criteria.. I thought I had
everything properly rigged to get a 110 degree angle on the V tail but,
like the craftsman, himself, somethings seem to have sagged. So now I have
a 120 degree angle. I do have ailerons but will I have enough yaw
stability? Should I rip off the empennage and try again, or will I be able
to compensate in flight?

Note: I never enter competitions, I just like to go hang with the guys who
do and have an excuse to watch and listen to them.

Unfortunately I have to wait a week before I can. Going to be flying the big

But next weekend, oh yeah!!
Thanks Doug. You do awesome work my friend (no really, he is my friend,

I will be selling rides on this beauty at a cost of $5.00 per wing snapping

[RCSE] looking for a hlg

2004-10-18 Thread Cheryl and Bill
Greetings!
Someone, I believe in the greater Seattle area, was offering a smallish DLG
type plane. I believe it was a foamie, but I'm not sure. They had a film
clip on their web site showing launches and some remarkable heights the
plane could get to. I've lost that web site/source for the plane.

Can anyone refresh my memory?
Thanks,
Bill

Re: [RCSE] Hobby shops in Santa Ana area

2004-10-18 Thread Jeff Gortatowsky
Ultimate Hobbies in Tustin off the 55 freeway.
JAXs hobbies on Brookhurst off the 405 freeway.
Gyro Hobbies off the I5 freeway in Lake Forest.
Pegasus hobbies (worth the trip) off the 10 freeway.
Hobby People's main store in Costa Mesa (or Fountain Valley, I fergit).
E-Hobbies store in La Mirada.

All but E-Hobbies and Pegasus Hobbies are within driving distance at night in
Orange County (Pegasus is way up the 57 freeway to the I10, and east on the
I10 in San Bernadino County, and E-Hobbies is in L.A. County) . Pegasus has
tons-o-stuff. Makes Gyro look like a Piker (Superior).

Where in Santa Ana _exactly_ are you staying? See between 4pm and 7pm the
freeways can be a real challenge for anyone not used to 6 lanes (in one
direction!) of bumper to bumper California drivers. Best to stay on surface
streets if possible. Ultimate Hobbies, JAXs, and Hobby People fit that
description if one is in Santa Ana (like around John Wayne Airport and South
Coast Metro). Gryo, E-Hobbies, and Pegasus do not.

Best wishes,
Jeff in La Habra Heights, CA

Re: [RCSE] Hobby shops in Santa Ana area

2004-10-18 Thread Jeff Gortatowsky
Tustin? You'll be on top of Ultimate Hobbies on Tustin Avenue. And closer to
JAXs and Hobby People's Warehouse store in Fountain Valley than Gryo. Not to
say you shouldn't go to Gyro... that's cool and you'll be close to Bill I
suppose (we have not met).

Hobby People's warehouse store is down the 55 freeway (south) which runs next
to Tustin Aveune, down to the I405 north three or four exits to the Euclid
Street exit. That exit curves around almost 180 degrees. You'll stay to the
right and turn right onto ELLIS (not Left on EUCLID! tho don't panic, you can
always turn around). Then follow Ellis around and under the freeway and Hobby
People is on your right a few blocks down. PLUS: If you keep going on Ellis
(turn right when leaving Hobby People) to Brookhurst and turn right on
Brookhurst, go one block or so over the freeway, on the left in a strip mall
is JAXs Hobbies. And Ultimate Hobbies is all the way up Tustin Avenue between
Katella and Nolh Ranch Road on the left also in a strip mall type building
(on the left if going north on Tustin Avenue).

If you stay a weekend, there are glider guiders not too far from JAXs and
Hobby Poeple to be found at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa. Electric flyers are
there every single morning it is clear and not windy (which is most days!).

Best wishes
Jeff

I should also mention that on occasion, if you are in SoCal and have a glider
(or can/want to borrow one), both of my clubs, HSS and SWSA, host some of the
toughest, but very low key and fun competitions in the country. Often the
club flyers and the 'guest' flyers list reads like a whose who of Slope, TD,
and HLG competition. It's a competition flyers heaven. Am I lying Dan?

No promises of course.

Best

Re: [RCSE] Hobby shops in Santa Ana area

2004-10-18 Thread Nathan Woods
Jeff is right on top of things with his previous posts. I personally
think Jax, while smaller, has more soaring related stuff, but either
way, gliders are a small part of their core business, unlike cars,
boats, and slimers. Jax's slimer focus has dwindled quite a bit by the
closure of the premier Mile Square Park for flying, and now the whole
store is struggling, in fact it's for sale if anyone wants to try to
make it go.

If you are into electrics or slopers, one of the best toy stores you
will ever find is not too far away in Covina, close to Temple Hill which
is a great slopeing destination. It's the headquarters of
SoaringUSA.com. Everything you see on the website, and actually quite a
bit more is available for drooling and fondling at our warehouse
facility.

Call ahead for a visit. The contact info is on our website.

Welcome to SoCal. Ignore the rain, it's our 5 days allocated this year
for rain :-)
