Part of the problem is the antiquated list mechanics, but Mike is an old
DOS fan. It would seem that this list is one of few that is still using
this old format.
There are options, one I stated before, don't use the digest version,
set up a mailbox in Outlook (if you use that) and set the rules to
deliver individual messages to it. Anything with RCSE in the subject
for example. You get the messages faster, they all are listed by
chronological order, and you can easily peruse the headers in one glance
to see what is of interest without opening any mail.

Other solutions is to go to one of several web based mirrors for RCSE, I
think yahoo groups, and Lift zone are two. I find these cumbersome, but
for folks struggling with the Majordomo list mechanics, it is a web
based GUI that is easy.

2004-12-19 Thread Michael Lachowski
I have absolutely no desire for anything related to DOS and any modern
Microsoft desktop product.

I will admit to being an old Internet fan, having used that before the
Web existed and the place turned into a sewer. If you search the
history of computer conferencing, you will come across EIES. I worked
on that system.

The list is no longer Majordomo, it's a different now antiquated product
that runs on a microsoft server. I have no control over the server.

Some day, RCSE needs to be retired.

Mix a few drops of water with polyurethane glue. Pour off any excess
water. Expands by about 20x. Get rid of excess before fully hard.
Experiment first.

Barry,

In my opinion, the best for what you're looking for is
the Legionair. It's thin wing allows it to penetrate
better than most from that era. It is difficult to
find, and to build correctly. It's even more difficult
to set up correctly and takes a lot of patience.
However, when you get the CG and trim where they need

[RCSE] Handicapping for contests

2004-12-19 Thread Rick Eckel
I'm interested in opinions. Our club Contest Coordinator is going to use a
handicap system for our monthly contests to sorta level the field for
different types of airplanes. We're hoping that it will encourage
participation.

Figuring that the Unlimited full house ship is the gold standard, how much
of a handicap would you give a full house two meter? An RES 2 meter? and
an unlimited RES.

Keep it simple please, I'm a bear of very little brain and I'm the one who
will have to figure out the scoring.

My initial take was:
Full house 2m: +10%
RES 2m: +12%
RES Unlimited: +5%
What do you think?

Re: [RCSE] Handicapping for contests

2004-12-19 Thread Pat McCleave
Rick,
Handicapping is really not the answer to gaining more participation.
Especially if your new guy happens to start with a full house plane. I say
suck it up, fly what you bring and make sure you have experts available to
help the new guys out. By handicapping the planes, an expert could fly
something like an AVA and basically still kick everyone's butts. Make sure
you let the new guys know that the competition is just for fun and a great
way to learn a lot about soaring and landing and plane set up from a great
soaring fraternity. Once they know that, they will come again and again.

See Ya,

My initial take was:

Full house 2m: +10%
RES 2m: +12%
RES Unlimited: +5%

What do you think?

Given that format, I'd fly a RES 2M. ;-)

I remember a time not so long ago when all gliders
coexisted peacefully on contest day. We had 2
classes.. 2m and open. Most everybody flew both
classes. I was new to the scene, and the older more
experienced guys usually flew poly ships... and won on
a regular basis. Craig Foxgord was an animal with one
of those things. Joe and I did OK, but guys like Keith
Kendrick, Mike Regan, Tony Stark, Ben Matsumoto, Ben
Clerx, Miles Moran, Edgar and BJ Weisman, Larry Jolly,
and so many more very talented guys... everybody had
fun flying whatever they wanted on that given day. Not
so much emphasis on who's getting the wood. I
hated getting beat by those poly things, but it
happened regularly.

There were Paragons flying against Falcon 880's,
Sagitta 600's against Falcon 600's and Joe with his
beat up Gentle lady that would only turn one way

Now I go to a club contest... and there are 3 classes,
with 2-3 pilot levels within each class there's
like 20-30 guys there, and 487 trophies to give out at
the end of the day

When I go out to a contest, the only person I compete
against is myself trying to fly and score better
than I did the last time if I fly my best and
win... great, but if I get beat by somebody who
outflew me good for them! I may want their thumbs
cut off but hey, all in good fun... ;-)

Can't all of our airplanes just get along

;-)

[RCSE] 5 Cell Battery Alternative

2004-12-19 Thread Michael Conte
I was at the local hobby shop yesterday in need of a battery pack for
one of my planes. They had several 4 cell 1100mAh flat packs and some
square packs that would not fit into the nose of my plane. I was
contemplating just building my own, but they only had 700mAh cells and
I really wanted something larger. So, I noticed the RC car packs. In
particular, the Team Losi Mini-T 5 cell 1100mAh packs. So I bought
one, soldered on a new plug and it fits great. I usually don't run 5
cells, but this seemed like my best option to get me in to the air
quickly.

Re: [RCSE] Handicapping for contests

2004-12-19 Thread Daryl Perkins
Handicapping due to airframe is completely condition
dependent. If the air is active, and the thermals
close together, all planes are virtually equal, and
comes down to the landing. Of course, the experienced
pilot will minimize the effects of the poor
conditions, and take advantage of his handicap. In
other words, hard to come up with an equitable number
or percentage that will work consistently. You'll
probably need to use some trial and error, and see
what works at your particular field under normal
conditions for your area. I think you'll find that the
data collected will be more representative of the
pilots flying each model, than the models themselves.

Once you find out that doesn't work, and the same guys
keep winning In golf they handicap the players...
not their clubs of choice

have fun

Damn. My handicap is that I think I can play golf!!

But your point is correct. Personally Like the heads up style in TD
contests. The fact is that most guys simply don't like competition (less
than 8% of AMA members enter any kind of sanctioned contest in a given
year), so doing stuff to make them happy only dilutes it for those that do
like it.

I fly the best stuff and I still get beaten by the better pilot, regardless
of what they are flying. Ask the guys at the Rose Bowl a few years ago in 2M
how they felt about JW kicking their butts with a 2-channel foamie!!

Re: [RCSE] Best NOS plane?

2004-12-19 Thread Mark Miller
The Mirage is a very unique sailplane design for it's
day. It is light where it needs to be and just strong
enough to complete it's task. With an empty weight
around 30 oz. it can float like few others. Add 24 or
so ounces of ballast and it will move out when the
conditions turn adverse. No flat bottom airfoil here.
It's thick low camber airfoil, i.e. semi symetrical,
gives plenty of lift with lower drag than the flat
bottom airfoils of the day. You can beef up the spar a
bit in the center section while keeping the tips light
for nimble turning characteristics. It was after all
the plane that inspired the Bubble Dancer. I have been
selling a short kit for the past two years and many
folks have rekindled the Mirage spirit. Shortly, I
will have a full kit available. Blaine Rawdon designed
a unique sailplane back in 1978 which is still a
viable and fun sailplane today. It was first seen as a
plan from RCM in February 1979.

   Barry,

In my opinion, the best for what you're looking
  for
   is
the Legionair. It's thin wing allows it to
  penetrate
better than most from that era. It is difficult
 to
find, and to build correctly. It's even more
   difficult
to set up correctly and takes a lot of patience.
However, when you get the CG and trim where they
   need
to be, you will be amazed at the legs this model
   has,
and the thermalling capabilities. I know Ray is
working to get the Legionairs done, and I
 wouldn't
speak for him in any way. If you can find a
   Legionair
140 and build the spar like a Bubble Dancer or
  Dark
Star, you will be rewarded with an extraorinary
   model.
   I have two, a 140 and a 100, and will build
  another
   soon.

Best of luck with your search.

However, neither is very happy coming upwind.

I've been looking at Ray Hayes' website:

I know about the Challenger, but am also
   considering
the Cloud Bound 4
or the Pierce 970. I'm open to other

as well.

[RCSE] tape for molded planes

2004-12-19 Thread Russ Light
All,
What kind of tape is preferred for the following applications on molded
planes? I want to avoid surface damage.

1) Servo covers
2) Wing joints
I have used the tape from Jim Carlton for my bagged wing planes in the past
and it has worked well. I had to lay down a layer of clear tape on the
wings and fuse to keep the paint from coming off however. Is this required
on molded planes?

Russ Light

Re: [RCSE] tape for molded planes

2004-12-19 Thread Tom Watson
1) 3M #600, 1/2 wide
2) 3M #600, 3/4 wide as a permanent 'base' layer on both sides of
joint. Colored electrical tape (to match, of course!) as the actual
retaining layer. #600 prevents paint from pulling when the electrical
tape is removed.

I use 3M Scotch 35 Electrical tape. Never had it pull up the color on a
molded Psycho, Molded Graphite, Emerald, 2 Artemis, and a NYX. Comes in
every color I need and available at Lowe's.
