F3B pilots -
Need one of them mono line spool stick-in-the-drill-and-wind-the-line-in

thingies (looks like an anorexic upside-down cactus that holds the
spool). Is this something that a fishing supply outfit might have, or
is it a fabricate yourself kinda deal?

Re: [RCSE] Re: Mirage

2004-12-21 Thread LJolly
Dave,
You remember the event correctly but not the pilot. That was none other than my old buddy Bob Gerbin. You may remember Bob for the picture in Model Builder with the double size scale and Windfree he built with it. Bob learned the tough way about keying a pre molded surface before bonding. That whole right wing just kind of peeled off and left those two spars sticking out in space I can still see that transparent yellow wing turning and twisting in that thermal as it disappeared over the hill at SULA. If I recall correctly that was the same contest that Terry Koplan asked for a reflight because the winch which had one of those resistors on the bottom, I think it was HiFlight, set the grass under it on fire during his launch. I remember flying Blaine's prototype down at the Blimp station. He told me to have fun with it, it will do 60 but 70 is probably to much. Kind of like walking your best friends girlfriend home, you definitely watch how far you push it. I flew a Mirage and found it a nice lightweight airplane. I used to latch the towhook on some light weight mono and walked backward letting the line off the reel while I flew it in figure 8's I had a good time sitting in the grass winding that Mirage up like they do with stunt kites now. It was and is a nice model. You guys flying the light weights might want to take up some tap dancing or blues tapping to get that rhythm down for winch pulsing. Happy Holidays Larry

[RCSE] New to RC Flight - Seeking Recommendations for RTF/ARF

2004-12-21 Thread Kevin Peer
Greetings, Everyone,
I am new to rc flying but remember well the enthusiasm that my father
and brother had for the sport when I was a child. It must be in the
genes because now I have the same enthusiasm, particularly for the new
electric rc planes that are arriving on the scene.

I am writing to seek advice on purchasing an electric RTF or
easily-assembled ARF that I can fly outdoors in low-to-no wind
situations. I live on a hill in a forest clearing about the size of a
baseball field. I can launch from a place at the top of the driveway
that is level with the tops of most of the trees - beyond these trees
is a deep, open valley. I am looking for a very maneuverable, fun
flying model that has the option for flying slow, though it would be
great if it could fly rather fast as well. I recently purchased a
Firebird Scout on the recommendation of someone but am not finding it
as responsive as I would like, and it needs more room to maneuver than
I have available. I am thinking of trying a micro flyer instead, such
as the Mini-Stik, which I have read about through a review by Greg
Covey.

I would appreciate any recommendations you have for your favorite RTF's
and readily assembled ARF's (micro or not), suitable for a
fast-learning beginner who will be flying in an area that calls for a
good deal of maneuverability.

Thank you and happy holidays,
Kevin

[RCSE] For Sale : NYX F3J w/ all 368s

2004-12-21 Thread Clay Hollingsworth
I need to part with this absolutely stunning sailplane. I bought this
Porsche Red NYX at Visalia in October from Jim Sneed, the 2003 Visalia Open
class winner. If you've ever seen his planes then you know how meticulous
he is in his assembly. Take a look at the pictures (
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=310793) and you'll see why
I fell in love with it.The plane comes with six JR368 digital servos, new 4
cell 1050 mah receiver pack, wiring harness installed - just add your
receiver and fly. The plane has a built in ballast tube and comes with a 17
ounce screw in ballast bar. It is the F3J version w/Kevlar/carbon D tube
Kevlar/carbon fuse. The fuse has been modified with a skeg box in the
nose that comes with two removable skegs.I'm selling it for only $1075.

I'd prefer local sale(greater Los Angeles area), but if I must ship it, I
will purchase a Sports Tube to ship it in and you're only shipping costs
will be to return the tube to me.

[RCSE] Re: Mirage Correction

2004-12-21 Thread RegDave
Well, memory serves but only partly. With input from a couple of guys who
also witnessed this event at SULA (thank you all for the corrections and the
memories), the Mirage with carbon spar caps was NOT Don Edberg's. Apologies to
Don (who has written and flown great stuff over the years). I'll leave the
corrected name out for reasons of liability!

However, it was a pretty spectacular event!

That said, the Mirage is one of the neater ideas that came along in that
era. Blaine did a great job with the basic concept and added a number of
innovative ideas to enhance the overall design.

At the time (my opinion only) there were three developing approaches to
thermal soaring.

One of them was traditional - the Paragon, Oly IIs, Windrifter, etc
ultimately leading up to the Sailaire. Big floaters with lots of area and high
lift
(Clark-Y ish) airfoils.

The other was the concept Blaine was developing - light wing loading, not
very high aspect ratio, and a lower camber section that could float and cruise

nicely.

The third was Hi Johnson's - very high aspect ratio and wing loading with
high camber airfoils to carry the loads.

All worked in their own way.

Interesting to observe that all of these were displaced by composite ships a
few years later. Technology does make a difference and can alter the
landscape very quickly.

Nice to see some of these designs coming back. They were neat ships that
worked well.

Apologies again to Don.

But if you've gotta crash, please do it in a spectacular manner. I do my
best sometimes but, other than looping my Albatross around the left wing on
the
power lines at Pasadena a long time back, nothing particularly memorable of
late. Jeff N's 'extreme verticality' landing at the NATS a few years ago was
certainly notable.

Merry Christmas to all.

Re: [RCSE] Got Blaster? Send fuse servo photo!

2004-12-21 Thread Marta Zavala

Hey Gordy and all. I finally got mine also, after lost planes,
shipping damage, etcI finally gota plane in one piece, thanks Barry
for all the follow up/etc, this was a rough one! I gooped my JR241s end to
end in to the bottom of the "channel" in the fuse. I then put dots
of epoxy/microballoons mix on either side of the servo to help stabilize
it. They seem pretty solid. BTW, this is one really nice (and nice
looking) molded DLG. I used heavier servos, 241s fuse/D60s wing, nothing
special when building to keep weight down and it still came in @10.7.
Using a little lighter servos in wing, say theD4.7s would have saved me 3/8oz
bringing the plane down to the low 10 oz range- not bad for a molded DLG!
Im just setting up my radio now cant wait to get it in the air. >From all
reports, this plane, even the heavier
12 0z one is very competitive, cant wait to see how the lighter one
compares with the XPs/etc. We have a pretty active DLG contingent here
with several XP4s/Encores/Taboos/Photons, etc flying so we can get a good feel
for how the Blaster will stack up.

  Hi guys,

I am currently working on a new Kennedy Composites Blaster DLG.

Just wondering how you installed your fuse servos.

  Thanks
  Gordy

Hope this doesn't show up twice - posted earlier but no results. I'm
looking to get hold of Al to put him in touch with Jim Porter at his new
Stateside location. Jim's still waiting on his computer to arrive from
Germany. Ping me if you see this Al.
Thanks,

[RCSE] RDS couplers 4 sale.

2004-12-21 Thread Harley Michaelis
I just got in a hefty personal supply of the Kimbrough Products couplers
used in installing the all-internal Rotary Driver System for flaps and
ailerons. I can can spare a bunch of these. They are $5 a pair, plus a flat
$3.85 for shipping, any size order, US only.

For RDS info, go to http://genie.rchomepage.com/. See File 6 opening page
for what's included. File 3, starting just after page 25, shows extensive
installation details for 3 piece wings.

I'm at 26 S. Roosevelt, Walla Walla, WA. 99362
Check or money order please and let me know by e-mail how many pair you are
ordering, so I know if and when to chop this off.

[RCSE] Early Christmas Present---Help!

2004-12-21 Thread Tom H. Nagel

Dudes:

My mother-in-law is going to be
out of town for the holidays, so she stopped by tonight to give the family
Christmas gifts. She gave me this electric model plane that I have
not heard of before, and I hang out in a lot of hobby shops.
It is sort of toy-like but maybe interesting.

 Made by Silverlit
Industries. Called an X-Plane. All EPP, with a tractor
prop mounted on the vertical stab. (!?) A 27 mhz TX, with 3
channels, sort of, elevator on the left stick, rudder on the right stick,
throttle on a button somewhere, and a digital camera that tucks into a sort of
bomb bay. OK, maybe its 4 channels, if you count the digital camera/bomb
bay thingy.

 They got a website,
Silverlit-flyingclub.com but it is written by somebody who learned English by
reading the instructions to Korean built microwave ovens. And by this I
mean no disrespect to either Koreans or microwave ovens.

Anyway, do I take this thing out
of the box and mess with it, or try to return it? Anybody tried to
fly one of these things? HELP

Re: [RCSE] Re: Mirage Correction

2004-12-21 Thread Mark Williams
Dave,

I hate to admit it but I was around during the time of the Mirage. The
single sided elevator and asymmetric vertical stabilizer planform really
bothered me at the time. A real airplane needs to be symmetrical. So, I
never was drawn to the design. The Blom and Voss designs from WWII really
question this, but I still am a purist. In addition floaters only have a
few days per year here in Texas where they really have an advantage and at
the time the Mirage was a floater.

The comment about Hi Johnson really hits home. His designs were more close
to what I thought we needed here in the central US. My gray matter now fails
me, but as I recall you have it right his designs were high AR, loading and
camber. Even though I looked at them as a option, nobody I knew of built or
flew one in our area before I took a hiatus from the hobby.

About the same time Don Chancey was developing his Pantera design. This
airplane used the new Eppler airfoils and the really new, for us here in
the desolation of Texas, balsa over foam D tube construction. When I
designed and built my own sailplane during that era that is the direction I
went. By the way I am still flying that airplane, and it was at the last TNT
and I am still very satisfied how the airplane performs if the pilot moves
the sticks the right direction. No slam on the anti-composite crowd, but I
think that construction technique was a milestone.

Subject: [RCSE] Re: Mirage Correction

Well, memory serves but only partly. With input from a couple of guys who
also witnessed this event at SULA (thank you all for the corrections and
 the
memories), the Mirage with carbon spar caps was NOT Don Edberg's.
 Apologies to
Don (who has written and flown great stuff over the years). I'll leave
 the
corrected name out for reasons of liability!

Big floaters with lots of area and
 high lift
 (Clark-Y ish) airfoils.

The other was the concept Blaine was developing - light wing loading, not
very high aspect ratio, and a lower camber section that could float and
 cruise
 nicely.

The third was Hi Johnson's - very high aspect ratio and wing loading with
high camber airfoils to carry the loads.

All worked in their own way.

Interesting to observe that all of these were displaced by composite
 ships a
few years later. Technology does make a difference and can alter the
 landscape very quickly.

Nice to see some of these designs coming back. They were neat ships that
 worked well.

 Apologies again to Don.

But if you've gotta crash, please do it in a spectacular manner. I do my
best sometimes but, other than looping my Albatross around the left wing
 on the
power lines at Pasadena a long time back, nothing particularly memorable
 of
late. Jeff N's 'extreme verticality' landing at the NATS a few years ago
 was
 certainly notable.

 Merry Christmas to all.

Has a range of 800ftehmaybe throw some real RC stuff in there to
