Re: [RCSE] data storage for JR9303

2005-04-15 Thread Jim Laurel
Exactly. But my point is that the connector is silly to begin with.
JR should have taken the opportunity with the 9303 to step up, do the
right thing (as Multiplex has for years) and put a proper standard
computer interface rather than sticking with with that trainer jack
interface, which is a legacy from almost two decades ago. I could
understand if doing so provided backward compatibility with the older
radios, but it doesn't because with the 9303, the channel assignments
are different from previous radios. So what's the point? No matter
how you look at it, there can be no rational justification for that
dumb interface.

Jon, I've been in the software development business a long time. We

extremely high end specialty applications, such as animation

dongle for a cheap $100 piece of software is a real slap in the face
to the customer. Everybody suffers so JR can wring every possible
cent out of the market.
Just imagine if you had to have a dongle for the MS Office suite, and
another for Adobe Photoshop, and another for Final Cut Pro, and
another for...well you get the picture. Before long, you've got a
briefcase full of dongles - and no I/O ports left to connect them to,
mention the potential conflicts with other hardware and software.
Alot of software used to require these things back in the 80s and
they were universally reviled. More trouble than they're worth.
Better to save the cost of the dongle, charge $100 for the software
alone, and accept some level of piracy.

All the RC simulators over $100 do the same thing.

I have to comment. My MPX 3030 is getting a tad bit old now (~4yrs) and may
now be out of production. Yet, it was reasonably priced when I got it at
$380. It shares files with my PC. It's easy to program (you ought to see all
the dust on my manual!). It can do all the mixing 90% of modelers need.
Receiver channels can be chosen at will. Plus, I love the 99 model memory
capacity.

Dang, I'd forgotten how much I love the thing. Are they still available? I
don't see much reason for anything else. The latest offerings don't seem any
better to me. Which is impressive considering how long the radio has been
around.

We will, we will. Care to carve a quarter scale fuse plug for us John? Abigail is definatley a beaut and a hot rod of Schweizers.

Hey I've been a busy man. I am finishing the 1-23 and 2-32 fuse plugs and laser cut woodie kits first. In the next week or so we will have prototypes and first articles from molds. Foam cores are already here.

We are adding four new woodies, the TG-2, TG-3, 1-26B and the Hall Cherokee II by May and I have to make canopy tooling for all of these plus review and revise plans to update the wing joiners, spoilers and ailerons.

Meantime everyone is crying for the 2-33, I have the 1-1 and 1-7 just about done and as anew startup just one year ago with almost 16 kits now,I don't think that is too bad!:D

While I'm on the subject, it's especially rude if you want to argue

FWIW, I totally concur with this. And, BTW, I found the probability
discussion interesting in this context. One (or more) individuals
should not attempt to dictate to the rest of us, who may well still be

breach of policy or etiquette has occurred, a thread should be allowed
to die from 'natural causes'. Of course, threads can always be
resuscitated at some point in the future when someone gets the urge.
Those who are uninterested can simply ignore it. That is the beauty of
public discussion forums/lists. ;)

I can sympathize with some of the stories here. I placed an order with
Kennedy Composites on March 1st. At that time, Barry told me that all
the items I ordered were in stock. He gave me a total and an hour
later, I sent him $245 via PayPal. To date, I have not yet received my
order.

Starting in the first week in April, I started sending Barry emails to
check on my order. Now, I understand that alot of the vendors in this
hobby are in the business part time. I understand that Barry had the
Toledo show in the first week in April. I don't have a problem with
that. I don't have a problem with delayed orders in general. But
seriously, is it too much to ask to take 60 seconds to reply to a
customer's email?

I expect that when I have given someone my hard-earned money, that they
at least do me the courtesy of returning my phone calls and emails.
Even a one line email saying Hi, sorry your order has been delayed due
to whatever would be satisfactory. But to completely ignore all my
communications is UNACCEPTABLE.

I wonder how Charlie Britt rates not one, but several phone calls from
Barry. Gee, guess I'm not on the right list or something... My
rating: -8

Re: [RCSE] Barry Kennedy Vrs Others..a personal experience

2005-04-15 Thread clayrace2000

The issue with Barry is that he has been making lots of promises,
with specific delivery dates, on his two hottest products and
missing those dates repeatedly to the same customers.Perhaps those
of you who know Barry better/longer haven't had the experiences that
others are having if you haven't tried to order an Ava or Blaster in
the last few months. I pretty sure he is overwelmed with orders for
both products and simply can't get enough product to fill the orders
in a timely manner. The problem is he's been telling people
that I've got your plane right here and it will go out tomorrow or
something similar instead of , I've got 100 blaster orders in front
of yours and you probably won't get your plane for 3 months. It's
the customer's expectations that he sets that are now hurting his
reputation with his new customers.

Barry is a very nice guy for sure, but he needs to bite the bullet
and either be more accurate in quoting lead times his customers, or
let someone else carry the line for Vladamir's products as well...
right now, he's in over his head.

Lastly, coin collecting is a hobby. For most of us who take time to
read RCSE, soaring is much more than a hobby, although somewhat
short of life and death. Our passions run high as do our
expenditures. There are dozens of one man operations in this
business who exercise a level of customer service that would be
exemplary by any Fortune 500 standard. Kennedy Composites isn't one
of them, at least recently.

I'm not sure what the exact relationship between the Pico and Lite
stick is (I used to have a Lite Stick too) but they certainly seem
very very similar.

Personally, I now have Slow Stick that I'm pretty happy with. It's a
good deal larger, but is pretty much the same. And less fragile.

My Lite Stick met an unfortunate end when I did a loop a few hundred
feet up -- the wing folded. But then things got wierd, as the unusual
forces broke off the wing half that folded, then the other wing half.
And then the horizontal stabilizer broke off. And then rather than
making a lawn dart, it started rotating -- fast, about 2-3 rotations
per second. And the fuse+motor+radio gear+vertical stabilizer very
gently came down to the ground, spinning like mad, with the wing halfs
and horizontal stabilizer still gently flopping down in the wind. I
really wish I'd had video of it -- though it certainly entertained the
other people around the park :)

What rule are you gents talking about? I see no
requirement for anAMA# of any particular sizebe placedon the
outside of the model. Below isthe text I
found from the AMA regulations. I also checked the soaring
regulations. FAI rules are completely different.

  From the AMA 2005 Safety
  code:

  6. I will not fly my model aircraft unless it is
identified with my name and address, or AMA number, inside or affixed to the
outside of the model aircraft. This does not apply to model aircraft flown
  indoors.

  From the AMA 2005 Competition
  regulations:

9.3. The name and address or AMA license number
of each of the members of the team will appear on or in the model per the
“identification” paragraph of the General rules.

  GENERAL

  4. Identification. All models, except Indoor,
will be identified with the owner’s name and address or AMA number, on or in
the model. Individual events listed within this (Competition Regulations) may
have additional identification requirements which must be adhered
  to.

Re: [RCSE] AMA numbers

Not any more. AMA Competition Regulations, GENERAL section, Paragraph 4,
Model Identification, says All models, except indoor, will be identified
with the owner's name and address or AMA number on the model. So you can
use your name and address instead of the AMA number and the number no
longer needs to be at least 1 inch high.

RE: [RCSE] Re: Barry Kennedy Vrs Others..a personal experience

2005-04-15 Thread Jim Laurel
First of all, I don't understand why this message is getting pushed to the
exchange now, when I deleted it several days ago. Since then, a lot has
happened.

When I wrote this message last week, I was quite frustrated about not being
able to get in touch with Barry after numerous attempts on my part. It was
my first order from Barry, so I didn't know him too well, and didn't know
what to expect. However, now that we've had time to talk things over, I can
understand how it all happened.

Barry's business is growing fast and, while that may cause problems for some
customers as he grows, it is ultimately a good thing for the hobby!

I have since placed a much larger order with Barry and have been extremely
pleased with his service. True, I was upset last week when I wrote the post
below, but when a guy steps up, fixes the problem and takes steps to improve
his service, he deserves our business. Barry is a stand up guy and you can
do business with him with confidence.

So, please ignore the post below.

RE: [RCSE] Re: Barry Kennedy

2005-04-15 Thread Jim Laurel
Once again, I don't know how this is getting pushed to the soaring exchange
several days after it was deleted from RCGroups. I have squared things up
with Barry, and am continuing to do business with him. He went through a
period of unresponsiveness due to the demands of the Toledo show and a crush
or orders for some of the cool new stuff he's selling, such as the Shadow
receiver. I've just ordered 2 Shadows from him as well as a gaggle of Voltz
servos. Incidentally, Barry has a good stock of Voltzs and a good price on
them as well.

In response to the increased business, Barry is expanding his operation to
handle the demand. I wish him the best of luck. Strong vendors like
Kennedy Composites are a real asset to the soaring community.

I feel bad that this stuff is still hitting the exchange. That's the last
time I try to post to the exchange through RCGroups...

of friends, I am insignificant to deal with. If that is so, do not
do
business with me. He doesn't have to deal with me. But by
accepting my
money, he has agreed to, whether he knows it or not, to at least
acknowledge me as a customer. Am I wrong to ask this? May be so,
but I
have paid my funds and do come to expect at least some common
courtesy.
Or am I in the wrong business? Maybe I should start in the hobby.
Take
the orders, collect the funds, and ship at my convenience. Oh, and
maybe
take care of close friends first.

I do regret having to post this as I got some idiotic responses,
but
alas, it has gotten results. I got a call from Barry tonight to
tell me
all have been packed and will ship out tomorrow. If it is so, I
will
write and post for all that he came through, even if a little
late.

And to the bone head who told me to get a Gentle Lady ARF as I

a newbie, my AMA is 327694, what's yours? BTW I have a Full House

Re: [RCSE] Re: Barry Kennedy Vrs Others..a personal experience

2005-04-15 Thread Glauco Lago
Well, I ordered an Organic from Barry almost a month ago but I knew it
wasn't in stock. He then received them from Vladimir but some fuses
had a problem which he offered to ship me anyway so I could fix and
fly until a new one could be shipped without charges. I could then
keep both fuses.

Barry later figured out the mini Graphite fuse is basically the same
as the Organic with the exception of the rear wing bolt. For my
trouble to drill a new hole in the fuse, which is a 2 minute job he
sent me also lots of free goodies, which certainly put him in a loss
for this sale.

So I must say the shipment wasn't as fast as I wanted but Barry went
well beyond his duties to get my little toy plane the way I wanted. By
the way he also got the color I wanted what I would say is surprising
for a plane that was in the unobtanium list no long ago.

Re: [RCSE] Barry Kennedy Vrs Others..a personal experience

2005-04-15 Thread Marta Zavala
I've dealt with Kennedy Composites before, and it was a bit frustrating due
to lack of communication. For a while, having never dealt with Barry, I
thought I had been burned. None the less Barry finally did come thru on
everything. I think he works at a real job then tries to run the model
business as well alone, so that must be tough. Ive sold a few planes and at
times find it hard just to fulfill those few sales
due to other commitments. After all is said and done I can sympathize
with Barrys plight, but yes being upfront about everything would probably be
the best policy, even if it comes down to saying I just havent had the time
to get to your order. I am sure Barry is simply just buried right now. He
is a pretty nice guy. BTW, Barry, if you read this, have you heard anything
from Vlad about the bullet proof Blaster you spoke to me about? I just
started working out again and feel in a few more months Ill be ready to test
the spar for you guys!

Fred, I have JR 3321's in my AVA's fuse and a JR 341 in the spoiler bay. Look
up Jim Bacus's web site for the spoiler ball joint linkage. It works very well.

I stayed with analog servos and with an 1100 nicad pack you can fly all day.

JR 368's or Volz servos are also good choices. I installed the large ballast
tube and can double the dry weight of 40 oz's with 4 slugs of lead and maintain
the balance point with any combination of lead slugs.

If it ain't type accepted then it ain't legal at sanctioned contests.

This is 50 mHz, so as long as the user has a valid amateur radio license

Oops, I goofed, I was reall thinking about the 72 stuff and I certainly did not
mean to slight the ham operators. Although some interesting comments were
brougt to the exchange and we all can benefit from that.

I did get a couple of private posts that took me to task for even daring to
comment on a subject like this. As though it might not be appropriate to
comment on a subject like this.,

Hmmm. I wonder how Gordy would feel if he were to be told not to talk about
whatever he wished to.

As others have suggested, this does not apply to ham band equipment.

Ham band equipment does not require type-acceptance, though if mass
produced (as most R/C equipment is) it usually is type-accepted,
because if not type-accepted, only one non type-accepted transmitter
can be made per ham operator per year. I'd have to dig up the
regulations to know exactly how the limitation works, though certainly
nobody keeps track of this sort of thing -- the main purpose is to
stop people from churning out things like illegal CB amplifiers.

And there's nothing special about a sanctioned contest here, except
that they pay closer attention to the rules/laws. If it's illegal
there, it's illegal elsewhere as well. [Yes, this is all specific to
 the US.]

FCC regulations do allow qualified persons to modify type certified
equipment, and I'm not sure if changing the transmitting antenna
qualifies (as long as the new antenna has no signifigant gain) or not.
(But changing the crystal definately qualifies.) And I'm not sure
what qualifications would be required to make this sort of simple
 modification.

http://www.vantec.com/FCCregs1.htm gives a good summary of the FCC
regulations related to R/C usage, though they don't apply to stuff in
 the 50 mHz band.

 | Mind you, I don't care and I'm not going to complain, but there is
 | someone out there that might, so if I were you, I'd keep the standard
 | long, ugly antenna in my flight box at all times.

Probably not a bad idea. Even though changing the antenna on a 50 mHz
radio is perfectly legal, you may run into a CD who doesn't understand
 this and can't be convinced.

 | I have tried the Smiley on a Futaba 8U on 50MHz. I got significant
 | glitching even at short range. I never got around to re-testing it on
 | 72MHz. I did just now (4/14) contact Smiley asking if the regular
 | antenna was acceptable for use on 50 MHz. I really would like to get
 | rid of that long telescope.

Well, the standard antenna is acceptable for use on 50 mHz, even
though the length is usually more appropriate for 72 mHz use, so I've
always assumed that the 50 mHz module (and the ones for other bands,
like 35, 40, 27 mHz, etc.) had the appropriate matching circuitry.
(Certainly, you don't change antennas when you change your module.)
And if so, then it would match the smiley antenna just as well as the
smiley antenna is matched with a 72 mHz module.

But rubber ducky antennas like the smiley _are_ known to create a 10
dB or so reduction in signal strength over a standard 1/4 wave antenna
(though the exact figure depends on a great many factors), so that
would cause a signifigant reduction in range, but I wouldn't expect it
to start causing glitching unless you exceeded that range. Perhaps
things were marginal before, and the smilie was the `straw that broke
 the camel's back'?

Obviously you're a ham if you're legally using the transmitter, but
maybe you don't have the proper equipment to listen to the signal.
You might want to find another ham with a 50 mHz FM receiver to listen
to the signal for you, with both antennas and start from there. Many
scanners would work OK for this, though they often don't give a good
idea of the relative strength of a signal. (A spectrum analyzer would
be good too, but they're expensive and not too many people have them.)

[RCSE] One-off simple EPP foam cutting...

2005-04-15 Thread Greg Stewart
Anyone know of someone who's doing custom EPP foam cutting, especially
no-template computer-aided cutting?

I need a new wing for my Diversity Models Maddog, it's a simple ~36 span
constant-chord with a symmetrical Selig airfoil. I've got one offer from
someone who'll assist me in doing it if I make a set of templates, but I've
been too busy even to make them.

TIA!

Greg in Minneapolis

Greg--

Go to the CNCFoamcutters group on Yahoo. There are lots of us out here doing
exactly what you are looking for and I'm sure there is someone in your neck
of the wood. If you don't find someone close by let me know what you need
and I'll see if I can help.

Dan

No way! Stud implies male gender, a really bad choice for Manti - males are killed and eaten by the females after breeding. Good Lift!
