[RCSE] what I'm building... Restoring this winter :-)

2008-01-13 Thread Craig Allen
Restoring my dads 1/3 scale 35 year old Aeronca C-3 and converting it to
electric using 123 batteries and making it a tow plane for my brother Scott's
scale gliders :-)

Havn't decided on a motor yet but am thinking of using two Axi's on a common
shaft... I want to finish it and fly it for my dad before he dies. And then
get my Dad who is 84 a ride in a full scale Aeronca C-3

if you don't know about the Aeronca it was considered the first ultralight
built back in 1936,,, Affectionately called the flying bathtub :-)

I love my father and owe him everything And now I'm crying

[RCSE] This Winters Projects

2008-01-13 Thread Thermaler
I have my Falcon 880 in shiny new monokote and I want to fly her again.
My Merlin fuse is in need of painting.
I got some mylar to layup the wings for my Europa.
I am going to do them first as a trial before I do the wings for the Camano I
am giving a lot of TLC to. The stab cores I did with saran wrap look great!!!
I have the covering for my Super Esprit cut to fit, that will be three days for
each wing.
I have a Constellation fuse to go with the wings I picked up.
Half a wing is built for a secret project for Woodcrafters.
The fuse is done for another secret project that will do just fine in the moldy
world.
My Osprey 2M is begging me to get more stick time on it.
The Aquila is jealous of the Super Esprit getting new monokote and wants some
too.
The Nebula MkII is asking why it is still hanging from the ceiling naked.
The Wanderer 99 wants a new elevator.
I have found a fuse for the Falcon 600 wings I have.
The Peregrin kit wants to become a sailplane.
A Peregrin fuse that will become a Falcon 1020 wants it's S3014 and S3021
wings, that will happen after the Europa and Camano.
The Ultima kit wants to become a sailplane also.
The Soaring Van needs repair to meet an OFB to pick up a couple of classics for
a rehab to fly and get me to the sod farm for practice and contest for butt
kickings, not nessacerily mine (<8

So what are you guys up to while the snow is blowing around?

I know you guys a little south are still enjoying the thermal hunting, me, I am
hunting for my longjohn's!!!

Snow? What's that?

Today its going to be low 80s with dawn to dusk sun. Its not (TD) flying
weather because of the wind so I'll probably spend an hour or two
working on my current building project -- a R/C sailboat. This is the
aquatic equivalent of the generic 2 channel 2 meter poly trainer, its
24" and its used as a pool toy (its replacing a similar one that's EOL).

I have to finish repairs to a Stork, I've been scratching my head
figuring out how to replace the about 3 square inches of top surface (I
know its a no-brainer for many but its a headache for me -- moldies are
a pain if you ding them). Then I need a new 3 meter

Too many planes means far too much time cycling batteries. That's all I
seem to do with my slope planes!

(BTW -- I've got relatives who live "somewhere east of Saskatoon" so I
have a vague idea what winter's really about. Seems like its worth
missing out on.)(OTOH there's no shortage of places to fly on the
prairies during the rest of the year.)

6.6V nominal for two cells
Max 6.85V
You charge them with no time with lots amps
No cycling
You charge them from any stage of the charge - no discharge (cycling) is

Stay safer
They are awesome

No need for regulator for all double voltage (4.8V and 6V) servos
Stay away from dedicated 4.8V servos only

Ray, I could not agree with you more. We simply have to do a better job of
letting the public at large know we out here. How many times have you been
to a fun fly or a contest and a random visitor says, "I didn't know that you
guys were out here". The more people that are aware of us, the more fellow
flyer's we will have. It's up to us to make people aware, get the word out,
evangelize. Get to your local radio and TV stations and let them know every
time you have an event, find websites that post local events and post them,
brochures in all of the hobby shops and tell your friends what you do too.
Be proud!

After listening to all the recent posts, each person should be encouraged
to do their own thing. If you like flying a woodie, fly a woodie, if you
like unlimited SMOM, do that, if you like 2M, fly 2M's, but for heavens
sake, do not condemn someone for doing what they like, let them do what they
like and you do what you like. And it might help everyone if we supported
each other too.

Lets fly and be HAPPY! (sounds like a good song to me)

[RCSE] recruiting new soaring enthusiasts

2008-01-13 Thread tony estep
Original message:

==
This is the key point. The general contest practices have evolved to wide
acceptance. To say that changing something will bring out new guys implies that
there are lots of guys just itching to become soaring pilots but won't because
they want different competition rules. We all know that's not likely.

As I keep saying in posts here and elsewhere, our club has recruited numerous
new members over the past couple of years, and activity and attendance
continues to grow. There are a few key drivers of this growth: our website
(www.mvsaclub.com); HL participation; and the availability of used moldies and
excellent RES planes that allow a guy to get a really excellent plane plus
radio for under a grand.

The website, and our club's on-line discussion group, have been excellent
sources of recruiting leads. When a guy does come out, usually with a wood-wing
2-meter, we don't urge him to come back over and over trying to learn how to
winch the damn thing; instead, we try hard to get him to upgrade to a better
plane as quickly as possible. This has worked in every case I can think of.
We've added a half-dozen guys in their twenties and thirties, as well as older
guys who are trying or re-trying soaring; virtually all of them have flown in
club events, and the younger guys really love to throw those HLs.

The club contests, and the trimming and preparation sessions for them, are a
major focus of our club's activities (the website has a list of flying reports
for recent fun-fly days, and you can see just how active our membership is). I
can't say that it would work for every club in every locale, but for us the key
has been that once a guy learns that he too can get a good launch, follow a
thermal downwind, and stay up for a long time, he's hooked. Fun = airtime, and
our focus is trying to show the new arrivals at the field how they can get a
lot of airtime.

To try to get more golfers out on the course they don't make the hole bigger or
the greens fees cheaper; they sell the idea that you too can learn to play the
game well enough to have fun. If what we are after is recruiting more
enthusiasts, the success we'll have will be proportional to the number of young
prospects who hear our message. The messages that you can get into it for a few
bucks with a GL and some surgical tubing, or that the contests don't allow
skegs, are not messages that excite anybody. The excitement comes from the
thermals -- that's what we have to sell. "Young feller, you too can learn to
fly one of these cool hi-tech machines that launches to cloud base and will
ride thermals all day." Or: "Believe it or not, this 5-foot span plane weighs
only 9 oz. and you too can throw it over a hundred feet in the air, and then by
golly you can ride thermals all day. Costs a few bucks and takes some practice,
but boy is it fun!" Make that pitch,
make it to as many prospects as possible, and soaring will grow.

I remember because my Dad who was not much of a pilot won several of those

pretty good too... He once drove over the wings with his 63 Falcon and did no
damage to them.. Try that with one of your moldies!

WOW... I can still remember... Must not of taken enough drugs in the 80's :-

[RCSE] Re: what I'm building, chapter 2

2008-01-13 Thread MSu1049321

Project 6: a scratch built HLG made to fit in a plastic rifle case for
travel. Plastic blow-molded fuse from old COX sloper cut in half for a pod,
Corndogger HLG wings, arrow-shaft fuse and foam/balsa tail group. Thing is darn
heavy
and doesn't fly well. yet.  A Second COX Slope Hawk pod is destined to become
a twin boom tailed electric pusher.

Project 7: Kyosho Melody 1/.5m motorglider. Had this since mid-80's, a
beautiful little semiscale-looking blow-molded plastic version of a generic
European
glass slipper t-tailed plane with thin, scale-like Eppler wings removable
motor pod on top. Just a very sexy little thing. (Really would like to make a
mold of the fuse before I accidentally kill it some day) This thing was a dog
when it was new, mostly because I flew it too heavy and the nicad and motor
technology of that day was weak.  It was a fair thermal glider on a hi-start
though, and the motor pod would work great with current outrunner or lipo/
speed 400
technology and the cheap tiny hitec 55 servos I couldn't afford in the
eighties.

Project 8: Graupner UHU plastic fuse for 2.5 meter Speed 600 electric soaring
on 7 cells of sub-c nicad mojo. Tail built; wings, not so much. Heavy
fertigrumpf plastic supposed to be indestructible.

Project 9: Original Kyosho foam EDF F-16 fuselage parts, only $17, how could
I resist, I intend to make more scale-like wings and tail from scratch and
make it look like an IL Air Guard Falcon but have yet to decide if it will be
EDF
or a pusher or what.

Project 10: GWS A-10 warthog EDF. I've worked on an A-10 model project on and
off for 15 years without success or progress, this one just screamed "buy me
before they stop making me!"  And was cheap. It's on hold in storage.

Project 11: NIB Klingberg wing 100 incher.  Waiting for better results out of
the 2-meter one first, plus, the kids were always underfoot and I was afraid
I didn't have the room, gear, and several hours in a row to try and prepare
and glass the wing parts, plus, my building skills were immature and like as
not
I'd have goobered it up, and she's so pretty she deserves better.  This one
will probably wait till the eldest kid moves out or someone builds it for me.

Project 12: Zagi THL that has so far neither been successfully "T" or "HL".
No slopes by me, so I'm converting it into a cheap trainer for my son, Intend
to put a really cheap  and slow GWS speed 400 pusher on it.

Project 13: Kyosho 2.4M motorglider "Typhoon"  t-tailed, looks kinda like a
Fournier, pretty. Kyosho used to make these in gas and electric versions as the
"Valencia". Got the fuse and tail for free, just need to build some wood
wings and add a geared speed 600, or now maybe some kind of outrunner motor.

Project 14:  Goldberg Electra custom, with  aileron wing with V-tail, built,
covered, needs guts and motor. Just lost interest, it was only a so-so
covering effort.

Stay tuned for the thrilling conclusion! Mark S.

[RCSE] Re:what I'm building chapter 3 and last

2008-01-13 Thread MSu1049321
In conclusion:

Project 12: A Zagi THL that has so far neither been successfully "T" nor
"HL". No slopes by me, so I'm converting it into a cheap trainer for my son,
Intend to put a really cheap  and slow GWS speed 400 pusher on it.

Project 15: An E-flight Yak foam 3-d plane that was crashed at E-fest and
given away to my kids by one of the participants, I've repaired part of the
front
fuse, it needs a chunk of wing leading edge replaced and radio and power
systems installed and good to go. Saving up for all these radio components and
power systems is the real drag for me. I try to move the RX from plane to plane
where possible to save money, but usually buy more servos and motors, esc's and
batteries for each model. And that takes time for me, and there's always a
more pressing expense that takes over...

Wow, until this thread, I'd never stopped to count how many things I had
piled up, some of them 15 years old.  That's some intense  case of ADD!:-)

Then there's my fleet of sailboats:
Kyosho Fairwind I built from separate scratch and dent parts and finds over
time. Been sailing her with great enjoyment since the early 90's, when she
looked a mess but sailed great, and have been slowly bringing her up to
scale-like
looks and better performance. This winter I cut up the top deck and hatch to
make a scale-like interior view section, I added pulpits and a helm wheel,
homemade winches and seat cushions. Will add a fake traveller car and rail
system
for a more scalelike fairlead  to the mainsheet. Still trying to find or make
a couple scale crew for her.

Kyosho Seawind: found a rare bare glass hull for one of these and have been
amassing the other parts over three years, am pretty close to assembling this
one to look like an America's Cup boat. Also needs crew figures and sails,
which I'm making from kitemaker's tyvek cloth. This is the one I build over and
over in my head when I'm bored in a meeting somewhere or killing time waiting
in
line for something. I have some really neat things planned for this one, just
got some masts and booms for her this weekend, when they say scratch and
DENT, they MEAN it; these mast parts were damaged  about four inches from one
end
by some mailman so I got $60 worth of rigging for $5, just have to make some
splices and repairs. "This is how I roll", as the kids say. For me, getting it
done creatively without spending the big bucks adds to the thrill when it
eventually performs to my satisfaction.

Eldon sloops from 1964: These were toys from my youth I bought off ebay, they
were free-sailed with a  clever self-tacking system. I had to buy three to
get enough parts to restore one beauty for the mantelpiece and pool, the other
two are "footy" sized and will get radios shoehorned into them at some point
for pond racing with my kids.

The RC sailboats are great when the wind is over my self-imposed comfort
limit for flying, and they have the same relaxing grace as a nice simple 2
meter
spiraling thru still air.

I guess this will make you think twice before asking the "what are you making
" question again, huh?

:-)

Distracted regards,
Mark S. the scratch and dent king

[RCSE] Re: What I'm building, a saga

2008-01-13 Thread MSu1049321

I have a bit of attention-deficit disorder in that I start a whole bunch of
projects and really get thru each one about 80 percent or better in one manic
panic session, then I hit some small delay for ordering a part or whatever, or
family and work responsibilities come up, something else will catch my eye or
brain and I'll jump onto another track. My bench(es) get all clogged up to the
point I have to stop building ANYTHING  because I'm out of room, plus, the
basement isn't heated so it's kind of uncomfortable building when the cold is
at
it's worst.  When it rains, I get seepage down there and everything has to be
put up off the floor, making the space off limits until I dry it out again.
Then again, I also spend too much darn time on the computer simming or reading
about modeling instead of DOING it:-)

We got a warm snap recently and I made a little progress. Here's what's in
process:

Project1) Refurbishing an antique Dodgeson Saratoga Windsong, it will have a
period-authentic 6 channel Aristocraft radio with electronic mixing in it that
needed rebuilding (cracked pots on the sticks). Yeah, I know, for a pure
Dodgeson fan, you would eschew electronic mixing, but the plane came more or
less
set up this way, so it will be part mechanical and part electronic. I really
HATED the floppy rudder pushrod system for this plane, it was originally
mechanically slaved to ailerons but just didn't  ever work right. I got some
RDS
parts from Harley and I'm working on driving the rudder for this plane using
RDS
driven long-distance by a carbon torque rod and a servo up front in the radio
bay where I need the counterweighting. Figuring out the geometry for that and
how to lay it into an already-built fuse without surgery is the main holdup,
kind of a "ship in a bottle" thing. About six hours to put the radio bits in
and add the towhook, I figure. Second holdup is I don't have or want a winch
and
have to save up for a suitable new or used histart big enough to reliably
launch this bad boy. This is a very intimidating project for me; though I've
flown a 100-inch foam thermal flying wing years ago, I have never successfully
launched and flown an open-class ship, most of my time is in 2-meters and
2-meter
electrics. I was given this plane gratis from a friend who picked it up at an
estate sale for like ten bucks. I've put about  a hundred into the "free"
plane so far in new servos, radio parts, and whatnot, got a lighter duty 2
meter
histart already and really don't want to lay out more green for the HD histart
for just one plane that might die on first launch. When the wings are on it,
the span is bigger than my garage door! I don't know that I can find a field
big enough to turn this baby around in!:-) Yeah, but the plane was FREE,
Mark!:-)

To be continued Mark S.

[RCSE] Re: What I'm building, still more

2008-01-13 Thread MSu1049321

Project 2: Boomer EX2 DHLG. This was almost ready to go, got delayed over
getting smaller radio RX and an Azaar antenna for it, then weather, then other
distractions. I think I also may have accidentally killed the custom battery
pack I had made for it, if that turns out to be the case, gotta wait more for a
new pack. My hobby money is a trickling allowance I get, everything else goes
to family expenses and savings, as it should, but that means I have to scrimp
for 2 to 6 weeks for purchases most guys here wouldn't blink over, like a servo
or battery pack. So I do a lot of improvising and buy lots of
scratch-and-dent. I don't mind a long slow building season, I have the time
since flying
season here is only good for me about 3-4 months anyway.

Project 3: 2M Klingberg wing, done up to look like Northrop jet powered
bomber, in silver monokote with Edwards AFB test plane markings. Darn aileron
linkages were always messed up, the original in-wing system had slop and
binding,
so I tried pushrods first on the bottom, which is bad news after the first
landing,  then the top, which was ugly and draggy, so  they've been re-done
three
times, finally being redone with direct-drive microservos and RDS. Top of wing
has the covering stripped to enable the surgery.

Project 4: Kyosho Soarus 2-meter, repairing crash damage, upgrading the speed
600 motor/ ESC and making a polyhedral and an aileron wing for it, was
waiting on old parts, I built this plane up from independent pieces found at
scratch
and dent sales, a common theme for all my hobby work. Actually I have three
Soarus blow-molded fuses, which are attractive, light and rugged as a ball bat,
I love 'em, and have set one up as a v-tail poly which looks very pretty
indeed.

Project 5:  Scratch built a Steve Shumate bluecore foam blue angels F-18
pusher from plans just last year. My second successful plans-built project so
far.  Really just needs the vertical stabs and yellow trim put on after the
aileron linkages are made and set up. I may have killed the only lipo I have
for
this plane by leaving the radio RX on all night by mistake while running off to
some family emergency of the moment. Was adjusting the second speed control in
it after the first one turned out faulty and accidentally flew the  unfinished
plane off the bench when it armed by mistake, cracking the prop, (more
delays), and I left it on overnight. Have tried to charge that lipo once since
then
and got an error message but will try again a time or two because the problem
may have been something else. Darn battery took 8 weeks to save up for, too
:-P  While I was fiddling around, they up and changed all the lipo battery
formats on me so they now have separate plugs for charging and discharging, so
I'm
saving up for the Equinox balancing unit for my Triton charger. Also afraid of
crashing this one on the maiden flight, but as long as the radio and drive
systems are not hurt, the foam is dirt cheap, and I have enough left to make 5
more. When the weather sux, I don't feel pressure to finish building because
what's the point, can't fly, then it gets nice for a day or so and I get
feeling
all antsy that I have nothing ready to go except my beloved Multiplex hitec
Sky Scoter and Air hogs planes and chopper.
