[RCSE] Nats update

2004-07-26 Thread Jim Bacus
Good news, we have WiFi at the Roberts Hotel and I can make reports and
maybe even get some pictures up.

We have been dealing with some rain each day, but the flying has been
happening and there have been lots of smiles!

OK, I am hooked on scale aerotow X/C, this is s much fun. I had more
than my fill of flying and crewing both days. I flew my DG 800 for 2.6
miles on the on property lap course on Saturday, I am new to this game and
asked Johhny Berlin to be easy on the tows, with the wind he was taking me
up on about an 80 degree climb, no downwind turns. I was releasing at
about 1,200 to 1,500 on my attempts. The third tow Johnny rolled the tow
plane up the tow to cheers, really cool. People were yelling for me to
roll the opposite way, but I am too new with all this and just played safe.

On Sunday afternoon when the weather opened up Peter Goldsmith offered his
ASK18(?) to me and it felt so good I took it on course, and ended up with
my weekend best of 3.3 miles. I really like the feel of the even larger
model, I think I towed over 2,000 on that attempt. After I landed, Peter
was looking to go on course again, so Sheldon Smith (driver), Ben Meyer
(Steve's son), observer, and myself in the back of the pickup truck went on
course with Peter, after a very nice tow (Peter's model did not have a
Picalario, so I don't know the exact tow height). 37 minutes and 9.7
miles later Peter won the event. It was big smiles all around. I really
can't express in words how much fun we were all having with this, and we
did plenty of fun flying too. I saw Johhny and Dr. Dan do opposing rolls
into a inverted tow, it was freekin' awesome. Skip, Danny and myself were
ripping high speed runs. John Derstine was doing marvelous aerobatic
routines. I have lots of pictures and video!

Congrats to team Bubba and Marc Gellart for winning the winch launch X/C,
he was very patient and played the course extremely well.

I went over and watched F3B for awhile, they were getting monster launches
in the wind. More people flying F3B at Nats then I have ever seen, they
looked like they were having a bunch of fun. Unofficially, Daryl placed
1st but the scores are not posted as of yet.

Today in Handlaunch it was real wet, but they got 8 rounds in! I was just
soaked taking pictures and timing for Steve Meyer. Joe Wurts broke his
main model (broke the boom launching it) and dropped 500 points early
on. Bruce Davidson (another lefty) lent him a model and Joe went on to
capture 3rd place. Mike Smith placed 2nd and Bruce Davidson did it
again!!! Congrats Bruce!

Tomorrow starts two days of 2M, I will report more. 8-)

I have several Seiko's and use them all the time, I think they are the best

Re: [RCSE] Neda Wingbag

Clear bubble wrap is about the worst thing you could build a wing bag out of...

Left in the sunlight with the wing inside, outside or even in your car, the
little bubbles act like magnifying glasses and quickly deform the wing
under heat and melt the bag to the wing.

I know someone that this happened to... a terrible loss of a molded wing.

I doubt there are going to be many more 100's this year no matter what
color they are, the scoring zones are tight, and they have the composite
disk over the 100 point zone just like last year. Hit it and your going to
bounce to low or no point land this year.

But they are the same for everyone and I am not complaining about it.

Probably the most appropriate place to discuss this stuff at this point
only days away from the big contest is in the pilots meeting before the
contest starts, with the CD and pilots at hand in a face to face manner.

I think all the guy was asking is if you could use a marking color that
shows up for people who are color blind. Red can show little or no contrast
against grass for people with certain kinds of color blindness. That makes
it very difficult for them to actually see the landing target.
Seems like a reasonable request.

If you want to be around a large group of pilots in the same hotel, it
would be the Roberts Radison. I've stayed there 4 years in a row now. You

Re: [RCSE] FW: Picolario set-up for 7th channel on Stylus radio

2002-01-01 Thread Jim Bacus

Mike,
We have been setting them up using the right slider, I've done it on my 10x
but I know Steve "sneidley" Scneider has done it as well on the Stylus.

I have a telario, but I assume the picalario works the same way. You just
need to hang it on a channel, and be able to send almost 100% servo travel
signal in each direction to set the modes within the unit. So by using a
slider, all the way up for instance is all functions reporting, pushing it
to the middle is just vario tones, no voice, or all the way down turns it
off. By sliding from 100% up to the middle and back, you can poll it with
out waiting for the interval report of altitude or voltage.

As far as doing it on the Stylus, sneidley reads the list here but is fast
becoming a MPX 4000 dude so I hope he still remembers. 8-)

They are also the same size as a Volz micro-maxx if you guys have ships
that are molded for those. I just put four 368's in my new Stork 2, which
is molded for micro-maxx and wing-maxx. I still used the wing-maxx for the
aileron/trileron setup, but put the 368's everywhere else. Nice servos,
these and the MCV2's from MPX are my favorites now.

Interestingly enough, it appears the new Stork 2 has the same airfoil as
the NYX.

Although my new Stork 2 has been finished for weeks, it's too cold for me

[RCSE] Endless Lift 3

2001-12-26 Thread Jim Bacus

My wife asked me to "fix" the VCR Christmas eve so she could watch her
holiday videos. I had been messing around with the home theatre and DVD
earlier in the month and I just needed to get the VCR hooked back up so I
said "sure, no problemo" thinking I would have the next couple of hours to
work in the hangar. Soon as I get the VCR back up, she says I need to open
one of my gifts this evening, and it was Paul Naton's Endless Lift 3,
surprise, surprise. No time in the hangar 8-) Neat video, I own all
three now, all quite fun to watch. There is quite a bit of electric stuff
on it, but I hadn't seen many of those models fly before, and I got a taste
of what F5B is about, looks more expensive than the models we commonly
fly. Actually, there is a bit of everything in it... nice stuff on X/C,
scale aerotow, the DLG revolution, Daryl in an interview... "give
sandbaggers a conscious!" I love it! 8-) And of course there is some
slope action, DS backside and on the frontside. A great highspeed DS
blowup, and Paul on the radar gun DS'ing. There is even a flavor of EL1
where Paul tries to fly off some extreme stuff, and I am being
intentionally vague, so you have to go buy it and see it yourself... 8-)

Cool video guys, a good one for your collection. Pumped me up for some
flying, now I just have to get past the fact that there is snow on the
ground... 8-)

Re: [RCSE] RE: Airfoil Coordinates Availability

2001-12-16 Thread Jim Bacus

You get what you pay for.

After I bought my first Icon and received it, in one of my first emails
back to Don at Mapleleaf was that he wasn't charging enough.

Not only is the product the pinnacle of top notch at Mapleleaf, so is the
customer service. All the materials that go into it, the design work by
Joe, I could go on and on. When he discovered that the fuselage needed
reinforcement, he recalled my model, redid the fuse, (I basically got a new
front end) and it cost me only not having my Icon in my quiver for a few
weeks. He did it on his dime. How many r/c sailplane manufacturers would
do that? I have order several more Icons from him since then, and so have
some of the guys I fly with.

Don can't build them fast enough... 8-) truly a great product,
Jim

The 10x is heavier then the 8103, no doubt about it. But I found I had to
replace the stock battery 600 battery in my 8103 because of it's quick burn
rate, the stock 1100 that comes with the 10x easily lasts a long day of

The 10x also has a battery that can be removed and charged separately from

Thank you Joe Dirr for the wonderful deep fried turkey (he droppped two
birds during the day), the wine, cheese, the spicy sausage and all the
other goodies you cooked to keep us "energized" through our day. I can't
tell you how good the turkey aroma was across the field when you were
flying 8-)

Thank you for the rapid scoring, the rounds were turned around quickly and
we flew 5 rounds of 5 pilot MoM, 6, 8, 8, 8, 10, with 37 pilots. It's
clear that CSS has the MoM format down to a science.

Thank you Jack Strother, for the best hospitality a friend could enjoy, and
for your continued rally for support for the CSS club, LSF and R/C soaring
in general, and the contest trek that you take annually spending time to
meet pilots and entice them to gatherings like this.

Thank you Ed Franz, you know why.

Thanks again to the entire CSS club, I know contests like these take
preparation and hard work, and it showed. Your field continues to look
better, it was an awesome place to contest fly this weekend.

What a great weekend, my head hurts,

It's just as you remember it with HLG, the same deal except with the big
toys. It is really fun, works VERY well with unlimited too.

You may be in sunny Texas now bud, but I am going to Cincinnati this
weekend with a group of hungry SOAR pilots to fly a little MoM at the CSS
Turkey Shoot / Pumpkin Fly / OVSS round up day 2 all wrapped into one
contest on Sunday. Hopefully I can get into the money round with all these
sharp pilots about.. 8-)

OK, I should really follow the thread, I read this about an hour ago and
keep thinking about it.

>Was it:
>- The resurgence of cruciform tails.

That was sure an interesting trend this season, quite an effective one for
me and the flying I do. My preference has changed from not really caring
about the tail much and ending up with a lot of molded Euro V tails to
caring and ending up with US made cruciform models. Was it the the first
euro moldie to go cruciform, the Scar, the molded Psyko for being there all
the time, or the Icon for taking the cruciform moldie to a new level of
design, the new top of the food chain moldie. I don't know, but they are
back again, and I like it. BTW, another favorite of mine is the Schpot
Dorker LT, again, made in the USA.

Another trend this year was 6 servo wings, I almost bit as I had an Escape,
but I sold it before I built it to help finance my Icon.

>- The development of the sidearm launch.

This was a significant development, it completely changed the HLG contest
scene. For me this meant putting HLG on the back burner this season as I
didn't have time to obtain and build a new quiver of DLG along side a
quiver of F3J models. But I got to meet Denny, and I bet he has even
better things up his sleeve for next year. 8-)

>- The F3J stake issue.

The most significant development here is so far the USA has handled this
rule in the correct way in every contest I have attended.

>- Breaking the $1000 barrier for a competitive molded sailplane.

Nothing new about this to me, that threshold was passed one or two seasons
ago...

>- The popularity of RES.
>- Dynamic Soaring.

Both were around last year, I am glad to see they are gaining
popularity. I need to DS again. 8-)

I wouldn't call it a development, but one of the most significant events
this year in R/C soaring was Daryl Perkins becoming the F3B world champion
for a fourth time.

Yes, that is exactly what it says in the newsletter. The percentage is
low, which is great, but it's the number of flights that strike me. We did
a lot of flying.
