[RCSE] Aerotow Safety Checks
Hi all, I am part of a committee here in NZ that has been asked to look at implementing safety rules regarding inspections of large aerotowed models. I see you have some pretty large scale sailplanes in use over there and I assume you are likely to have some sort of safety/inspection checklist at major events before the glider is allowed to participate? If you have a copy I could view please send to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Also, we need a suitable rule of thumb for tow release checks. At what point does the tow release mechanism still need to release? Under a load equal to the weight of the glider or 2x weight etc. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Les. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Re: Winch chute wanted
Here over the ditch in NZ we dont even use the welded ring anymore. Sleeve the line as you described but put the loop in the line directly on the hook thru the crown of the chute. Less weight and no hard bits to whack your tails. I have yet to catch a tail using this system and I think the slight delay in the chute opening as the line is withdrawn helps avoid tail hookups. Cheers, Les. Put your welded ring on the end of the line [braided or mono] or as we do, make a loop and knot in the mono which has itself been enclosed in a Spectra tube, which remains light, won't tear and more importantly, is much safer on the rewind. You get the Spectra tube by pulling the middle out of Spectra boating cord 3mm or so. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] Re: Determining channel number
A few years ago down under we changed our whole way of numbering frequencies. We used to use a similar way to the US but now we use the first number of the freq band and the next 2 are the first numbers after the decimal point, thus 72.150 becomes channel 715, 72.330 becomes 733 etc. Very simple and handy because we have 27, 29, 35, 36, 40 and 72mhz bands available to us. Its great to be able to buy from anywhere around the world if you are seeking small and light stuff, a lot of us glider types are slowly moving towards 72mhz due to the excellent small and light rx's from the US. Cheers, Les. Date: Fri, 25 Nov 2005 22:06:30 -0600 From: Darwin N. Barrie [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: soaring@airage.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Determining channel number Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I like to post this every year to assist those who are new to hobby. = With the advent of Park Flyers and lots of people getting into RC the = dilemma occasionally arises on how to determine the channel number (or = the frequency). The following formula works with all 72 frequencies. Example: frequency 72.550 To determine the channel add 21 to the first = two numbers to the right of the decimal. 55 + 21 =3D 76. Now divide by = 2 to get the channel number 76 divided by 2 =3D 38. Channel 38 Another 72.190 19+21=3D 40 divided by 2 =3D channel 20. Obviously this works in reverse too. Darwin N. [RCSE] Re: F3J landing technique
Technically possible, F3B rules were changed many years ago to stop a similar occurance by saying that the time stops when the model comes to rest, not when it first touches the ground. I have the 2003 F3J rules and they state the time stops when the model first touches the ground or a ground based object, but it also says: 5.6.10.9. No landing bonus points will be awarded if the model aircraft overflies the end of the group's working time. So it would seem the landing must still be completed within the working time to count. I was going to ask about this of some of the present pilots, but in the rush of scoring I forgot! So, if anyone has seen this, or better yet, can direct me to a video showing this technique, so I can get details, I would appreciate it! [RCSE] Good Vendor Alert
Hi all, just wanted to tell you all that recently I saw that Samba Model (Pikes etc) had clear servo hatches ( http://www.f3j.com/accesor.htm ) with blisters molded in to clear slightly protruding servo arms. Dont need em to be clear but needed the blisters. After corresponding via email a few times I couldnt pass them up at the price, or more couldn't be bothered molding my own when I could buy em for just a few $ a pair. We'll I ordered a few sets for my Viking on the 16th and today, just 4 days later they are here all the way from Europe to New Zealand. Samba posted them without having recieved my money yet and I already have them fitted ready for 2 days of F3B this weekend. [RCSE] 9C Setups/ 9C Super
Hi all, been some discussion on the 9C and I thought I'd share a few things I've found to make life easier. Flaps - To get all the flap travel you need, activate the FLP-TRIM mix and set it to about 40-50%, then turn the VrA knob to about the 3 o'clock position. You have now offset the entire trailing edge and in particular the flaps, by only going to the 3 o'clock position you leave enough travel for reflex and upgoing FLP-AIL mixing. I set all my models up this way ever since I got my 8U and have carried it on into the 9C, keep a 'master' memory and use it as a template for new setups. Be careful to leave the VrA knob in the same place for each setup, you should never have to touch it in flight so its no big deal. The trim mix issue - If you are having trouble dealing with the way Futaba have associated the trim with various mixes when activated, then its time to sell your 9C and get a 9C Super. With the Super, you can select the trim acting in the mix or not. Improvments in the 9C Super - I mainly changed to the Super to get rid of the trim issues but have found a whole heaps of other extras as well. There is a new mode for gliders, GLID-2FLP-C, thats a 2 flap servo setup with flight conditions. There are 3 conditions plus normal available for use. You can have different camber and differential settings in each condition as well as defined offsets for each of the wing servos. In addition you can assign pretty much any of the switches to any function, you can now assign CROW to any switch or leave it permanently on as well, not just switch A. In the ELE-FLP mix you can set travels for the flaps and ailerons independantly, in the AIL-FLP mix you can set end points for each of the flaps independantly of each other, in each direction, useful if those linkages aren't exactly identical. The only thing really missing from this great system that would make it an excellent system is true flight modes for the elevator settings, currently the trim setting are cumulative. That makes it a little hard for an F3B'er like me to get consistent trim settings for the likes of speed runs, but I think I may have a workaround for that, time will tell. Regards, Les. [RCSE] Been flyin' today...
Had a great day of flying today. Don't normally get out to fly much but got a lot done today. First up a friend rang the other day to see if I could help him sort a model he was having trouble getting consistent launches with. I happen to live next door to a mile long grass runway that is mostly unused these days so off we went at 7:30 this morning for a couple of hours launch tweaking and speed run practice so he's sorted for next weekends 2 day F3B contest down here. Got home about 10am and did a few jobs around the house and then tried to think of something to do with the kids (4 7). Decided to head out to a gannet colony a half hour away and check out the view etc and see a bit of nature, had flown slope there before so threw in a foamie and at the last minute added the buddy box set up to the car. After checking out the conditions it was out with the model and off we went. Dialed the throws way down for them. Both kids have spent time on Realflight on the computer and typically the 4 yr old was better than the 7. Mostly short turns on the controls for them but some got up to a half minute or so before I had to take control back. Absolutely nothing like spending an hour flying with the kids on a Sunday afternoon, talk about one pretty proud Dad. Only thing I wish was that someone was there to take a picture of the kids first flying session. Hope your Sunday is as good. Les. RCSE-List facilities provided by Model Airplane News. [RCSE] DS368/361 Servo's
Hi all, I have seen some discussion in the past about the 361 being identical to the 368, however I have found differing specs between the two. DS36128x30x13mm18g0.15s/40deg DS36828x30x13mm22g0.11s/40deg I believe the difference between the two is the 361 has a 3 pole motor whereas the 368 has a 5 pole, can anyone out there confirm this?? There were some rumours a number of months ago that the 368 was to be discontinued, does anyone know if JR Japan has simply been putting 368 stickers onto 361 servos for the US market, I have heard that from at least one source fairly close to JR Japan. Re: [RCSE] just wondering
At a club F3B contest a few months ago in pretty windy conditions, I had my Scar at altitude, before I could do anything about it the Scar went nose first vertical and then did a tail slide, I thought maybe I had been hit with interference but talking to other pilots in the slot, found that one of them in the same area had his model do an uncommanded roll before he was able to stop it. Very interesting I think, Les. Has anyone ever hit a thermal/updraft so violent that it flipped the planeinverted?? A big plane, like 3.4 m moldie?

If you do decide to end up using a product like Imron, invest in a good quaility breathing gear, preferably a force fed fresh air supply or at the very least a quality respirator fitted with organic vapour cartridges and change them regularly.
