Re: [RCSE] 2005 NATs..reply

2005-01-03 Thread Mrmaseratiman

Jack, that is an excellent answer to the question posed.

((Can someone explain to me why F3B Cross country has not been listed as events for the 2005 NATs? Did I miss something? ))
TK,I think questions like the one Jackabove and his reply could be used on the LSF website like an infomercial.

((It was a design set into motion over 2 years ago, by the then, LSF board ,the idea is that F3J is run at the Nats during the F3J team select year, and F3b run at the Nats during a F3B team select year, alternating each year.

The idea was to hopefully use them as team qualifiers, and to give each event the time that it needed to run a more successful event.

The X/C ( Scale areotow in 2004) event is run during the F3B season, due to the attendance in F3B, which allows the frequency spread whereas it would be prohibited for f3J.

F3J Has a larger event Turnout than F3B, and it appears that due to the schedule change, it continues to grow.))

Itried to come up with the answer earlier today and Jack solved it for me.

Thank you Capt'nJack.

[RCSE] Re: [Allegro-Lite] Re: Bonding Pushrod Housings

2004-12-28 Thread Mrmaseratiman

I have been using the light weight white foam as pushrod guides for a long time.
In my two AVA fuse's and my new Graphite 2 fuse, the most recent applications, I formed three 3/4" discs for each fuse. The front of the boom, the middle, and the rear, just forward of elevator and /or rudder attachments.
Cut a notch in each disk to locate each pushrod outer as required by each design. Also in the middle of each disk fashion a notch to be used to orientate the discs as you are installing them to insure the push rods are lined up for smooth action.
Shape one end of a 3/8" birch dowel like a screwdriver blade and use the dowel to rotate the disc for pushrod outer location.
Don't forget to install the pushrod outers into the notches as you install the foam bulkheads.
After the push rods are completed check for smooth operation and dribble slow drying epoxy from each end to fix the front and rear foam bulkheads in place. The center bulkhead should be epoxied prior toinstalling the front bulkhead.
You will nowhave a very smooth push rod system without any slop or end play.

Regards, Dave Corven.

Re: [RCSE] Re: [Allegro-Lite] Re: Bonding Pushrod Housings

2004-12-28 Thread Mrmaseratiman

Jon, I can't deny, as long as the extra weight of more than 3 foam bulkheads don't create a balance issue, that more bulkheads, 4 or 5, will no doubt result in better pushrod stiffness.
My AVA elevatorpushrod exits 2" forward of the elevator horn (on theboom top surface)and the rear bulkhead is 2" in front of the elevator pushrod exit point. The front bulkhead is about 1.5" behind the front edge of the boom proper. Thatallowsa small amount of clearancebetween the #1 bulkhead and the aft edge of the pod as it fits inside of the boom.
The resulting space between bulkheads is about 11". I also install a 1/2"balsa U shaped bulkhead to carry the aft end of the 20 mm ballast tube and provide support for the pushrod tubes at 8" forward of the #1 foam bulkhead.

The end result of this installation provides excellent elevator and rudder response for my 40 oz AVA.

If a similar length fuse were to be used on a higher performance sailplane then more than 3bulkheadswould berequired to provide the necessary control respone, no doubt.

I hope this disscussionhelpsthose who have questions about pushrod support with these extra long fuselages like the AVA and Bubble Dancer.

Jon,I hope you are enjoying the Christmas Season.

2004-12-20 Thread Mrmaseratiman

Now that we all know that the Mirage is nostalgia legal, lets talk about wing strength. I have the evidence in my workshop that the stock wing structure is apparently not up to even moderate winch launches. It was a great, no, terrific flying sailplane.

So, go forth and build Mirages with beefed up wings and find out what nostalgia is all about.

I would go so far as to suggest that a "Mirage" only series of events would be very successful.

I also hope that most of you will dismiss this as the raving's of a certified mad man, and not build a winch launchable Mirage. Then I will have the NOS events all to myself.

Mirage regards, Dave Corven.

Just read through the entry pack, which mentions J instead of B for the F3 thing on the special noticies page. It says 4 entries per freq which is consistant with F3J but the front entry page says one per freq. as in F3B.

[RCSE] Radio programming for 9303

2004-10-26 Thread Mrmaseratiman

Got this idea from Troy Lawicki. Use the gear switch for launch. Towards the back to launch, pull forward just as you start the rotation into the bucket, tap the trainer button to activate the timer, if you want the timer.

You already have the three position flap switch setup with speed as the top position (0), cruise as the center position (1) and the bottom position (2).

Before you launch, set the flap switch for speed and the gear switch away for launch, and as you rotate into the bucket pull thegear switch to you, tap the trainer button for timer while rotating to climb up and as you rotate to a level attitude after finishing the climb, pull the flap switch to cruise and finally to thermal when you think you have cored that thermal.

If theseXX year old fingers can do this, then any one can, and that includes you Bubba.

Re: [RCSE] CG on Grand Espirt

2004-03-20 Thread Mrmaseratiman

According to the original plans of the Grand Esprit that I am holding, the CG is 15.3 inches or 389.62 mm, (being the bi dimensional person I am),back of the nose, parallel to the wing bottom surface at the bottom of the fuse. Project that point perpendicular to the bottom of the wing and the balance point is 3.00 inches, 76.0 mm,back from the LE.

[RCSE] @004 AMA/LSF Soaring Nats

2004-02-29 Thread Mrmaseratiman

This is a note to all of you Soaring Nats entrants or potential entrants. I have just reviewed the latest registration info as of 2/22/2004 as it is shown on the LSF web site,www.silentflight.org and so far the entries appear to coming in quite well for all categories with one exception, F3B.

F3B, to survive as a Nats Event, needs more supportin the form ofentries on a year to year basis than it has seen in recent years.

This year is complicated by having the Canada Cup and F3JWorld Championshipsin Canadastartingright on our last weekend of the Soaring Nats. We are fortunate to have a very competitive team in F3J this year and the support we can give our team will carry them to the Worlds in Canada with the momentum to succeed.

If you are planning to enter F3B a the Nats this year do not wait toolong asF3B and CrossCountry are sharing frequencies on the first weekend on a first come first served basis and you may not be able to get your choice of frequencies later in the entry period.

In the mean time if you are planning on entering F3B,please contact me on or off line so I can judge the potential level of entries an plan ahead for a successful F3B event. Thisis a team select year and I would like to use the Nats as a qualifing contest.

Otherwise, the Nats are begining to shape up as another great soaring event.

Re: [RCSE] 5 cell current limiter SWC.

2004-02-11 Thread Mrmaseratiman

Not all servos are rated for five cells. Most but not all. For instance JR's 331 with a 3 pole motor is not. But a 331 has about 20% more torque than a JR 341 and if you drop in a set of JR 368 gears it makes an excellent flap servo. I have been using that set up in a Space Pro without any problems for near a year. Ailerons are 341's with 368 gears as well.

Also Congratulations to Chris Corven, 3rd place, RES and Mike Reagan, 1st place, RES at the SWC. Both flying the only AVA's at the SWC.

Re: [RCSE] antenna length

2004-01-01 Thread Mrmaseratiman

Louis, I have a brand new 92777 and it's antenna measures 39 inches outside of the case. For comparison I measured the following rx's also.
Airtronics 92785 (new) 38.75 in.
Airtronics 92765 (used) 39.25 in.
Airtronics 92745 (used) 38.75 in.
Hitec superslim (new) 40.5 in.
JR 649S just factory serviced w/ new antenna 39.00 in.
JR R600 (I was told it wasnew) 38.5 in.

Isn't it interesting that this varied selection of rx's use approximately the same length antenna's.

Re: [RCSE] Last week to vote in the LSF Elections

2003-11-26 Thread Mrmaseratiman
Rob Glover wrote: see my reply below.

Dave -

I appreciate your encouraging folks to vote, and I agree that the criteria that you have laid out SHOULD be enough for the LSF voter qualifications under the existing bylaws. Unfortunately, it does not seem to be working out this way under the current administration. I fear that a number of the people who you encourage may be disappointed. They should still try to vote, but you may hear from some folks about this.

As I remember the bylaws they state that any form of contact with the LSF within the last 2 years qualifies a member to vote. Seems pretty simple. A Nats entry form that is sent to the LSF's own Nats registrar complete with a valid address should be enough, if the person is a level I or better. Unfortunately a number of these folks have contacted me and told me that they were not allowed to vote. It appears to me that the current administration does not think that these folks meet the requirements.

I have also been contacted by several level IV members who were bounced by the voting system. It seems that a number of these folks are also not in the LSF database. They should all be in there in perpetuity even without a communication every 2 years.

I have not raised a stink about this because I'm not sure that the current administration has the ability to competently update their database in a timely manner to allow these folks to vote even if they so desired. It's obvious to me that they have not maintained the database in a manner that we might have wished in the past, and it may be too late to try and do so now.

I hope that whoever wins this election will upgrade these systems. I think that the past administration has not expected folks to be interested in voting, and has perhaps fostered this disinterest to some degree. I am greatly heartened that so many folks have chosen to vote and become more active, and I hope that more do so in the future.

happy trails - Rob Glover

Good thoughts Rob, very good. It's pretty obvious that we have some work cut out to do for LSF and regardless of whomever takes the helm of LSF for the next four years, your group or TK's, really good things are about to happen for LSF and R/C Soaring.

There is a ton of new interest in R/C Soaring and LSF and we have to make sure that we capture this new interest and the pilots that are creating this interest and somehow make it easy for all LSF members to want to continue to belong and participate in LSF.

Unfortunately, not all Nats entries are LSF members, not required to be to fly at the Nats, which by the way is an AMA Event that we, the LSF, run for them and thats where the lack of a mechanism to utilize the Nats entry database to our advantage needs to be possibly created for the 2004 AMA/LSF Soaring Nats.

Re: [RCSE] Van shelving ideas needed

2003-10-25 Thread Mrmaseratiman
Jack Iafret and I have built take apart saiplane carriers (Jacks Idea) for our vans. Jacks is a Olds Silloette and mine is a Dodge Ram Van.
Mine has 3 cross bars and 3 longitudinal bars made from from 2 x 2 poplar. The cross bars rest on the rear side windows interior trim panels.
We use vertical dowels as separators with foam carriers for the fuse's and foam carriers to carry the wing panels, leading edges down. This rack leaves the whole lower area open for the tool boxes, batteries, winches, etc. I also have a ply table with plastic pipe legs that gives a 2/3rds width shelf behind the second seat for extra capacity when 3 of us have traveled to contests with as many as 8 to 10 sailplanes.
I can supply pics by e-mail next week and a perspective drawing in a couple of weeks if you are interested.

Re: [RCSE] LSF elections

2003-08-06 Thread Mrmaseratiman
Rob and Larry, I think this will be a banner year for LSF and the forthcoming elections. Captain Jack and company have done a teriffic job over the last four years and the LSF membership should and will stand up to elect a new slate that will continue to energise and grow the LSF to new heights of achievment and service to the soaring community.

There are several well qualified individuals that are interested in running for these positions that I am aware of and more, I am sure, that I have not heard of. The nominations list should give all of LSF good choices to select from.

Captain Jack, will you make sure there is a return address on the nominations form that will allow those that may not be able to respond by computer to mail their nominations to.

Those of us who can respond electronically should copy the forms and distribute them to other LSF members who don't have access to computer hookups to eliminate that issue.

Also, GO MIKE, GO GAVIN, GO DARRELL, GO DARYL GO TEAM USA !!!

 Regards, Dave Corven.
