Re: [RCSE] Multiplex Cockpit

2006-06-03 Thread Randy Bullard
The earlier Cockpits had crap batteries. They would die early and with
almost no warning. They may have improved them, but I would throw the stock
battery away and get another one.

Also, in earlier Cockpits, they would suddenly scramble themselves. Your
plane would crash and you would look down and see garbage on the screen. On
mine, I think the chip wasn't grounded right. They may have fixed this
problem. Both of these problems caused crashes with several people that I
flew with and I had two narrow escapes myself. Hopefully people with newer
Cockpits have not had these problems. This was several years ago.

My Cockpit has not caused any more problems since I sent it in to Ernie to
be repaired and I replaced the stock battery.

Re: [RCSE] A defense of training beginners via slope

2006-05-30 Thread Randy Bullard
- Original Message -

Not to mention the humbling experience of the famous Walk of Shame

The Walk of Shame is usually associated with combat. My guess is most
beginners won't be doing combat right way.

The way I see it, learning on a slope has the advantages of:
1. No high start or winch to get used to.
2. Your plane is much closer to you so it's easier for a beginner to tell
what it's doing.
3. The lift is much easier to find than with just thermal flying so the
beginner will get longer flights which equate to faster learning.
4. There are a lot of slope EPP foam planes out there to choose from. Plenty
of them fly slow enough for a beginner and are really hard to tear up. Tape
and CA will take care of most field repairs and there is almost nothing Goop
won't fix once you get home.

The only disadvantage I see to learning on a slope is that a lot of people
live in slope challenged places.

[RCSE] Re: New Ky DS Record Set Today in Frankfort!

2005-11-07 Thread Randy Bullard
I know you're supposed to be pretty committed when you go in, but what's a
good way to get started? I felt like I bled off all my energy before I
even got started.

By committed, it usually means having enough speed (energy) and diving
deep enough to punch through the boundary layer. Think of it as the back
side having three layers. Top layer is the air going in the same direction
as the prevailing wind. Layer two is the boundary layer which can sometimes
be a fairly ugly rotor. Layer three is below the rotor in what hopefully
either calm air or even better, air going back up the hill.

One of the most common problems when you are trying to learn to DS is to not
dive deep enough to get through the boundry layer. The plane spends the
whole time in the air that's going all over the place. When you don't go
deep enough to get out of boundry layer, it just sucks all the energy out of
your plane. It's really like putting on the brakes. It sounds like that is
what was happening to your plane. Also, don't go back to far. Try to keep it
close to the hill.

Sometimes if the wind direction isn't correct, the rotor is the whole back
side of the hill. If you aren't carrying lots of energy when you dive in,
you won't make back to the top. Don't keep trying if it is like this.

I hope this helps.

Re: [RCSE] Subject: RC and airports

2005-10-11 Thread Randy Bullard
I haven't seen foam wings collide with aircraft but I've seen them hit
other vehicles and they don't seem to do noticeable damage.

And how many of those vehicles were doing 120kts or more? Because of their
construction and speed, planes are tremendously more vulnerable to strike
damage than any ground based vehicle.

The comparison with birds is ridicules. Birds don't carry lead ballast and
nose weight. Lead, you know, the stuff bullets are made out of. Birds are
also not under human control and don't understand planes. Foam planes are
suppose to be in control of a thinking human. Obviously some are not.

I don't know why nobody else has answered this since as far as I know other

When I lived in NC, I flew The Lump near North Wilkesboro. I think it's
highway 16, but just go north from town and take a left once you get the
Blue Ridge Parkway. Follow the Parkway for few miles and there will be a
parking lot in front of a large grassy hill. Park there, hike up the hill
and fly till you drop. In the summer, lift will be there until after dark.
You will need a short high start to get your plane over the tall trees in
front.

If there is lift, there is always somebody flying there on the weekend and
often during the week.

Now this is very interesting. Someone with a much lower AMA number than mine

to fly properly with both thumbs. So now I've wasted all those years trying
to learning how to fly with both thumbs for nothing? ;-) In reality, I
suspect most of the best pilots use a combination of coupling and two thumb
flying.

Interesting how you guys on that side of the world DS while on the front
side or bottom of the hill instead of the top. Years ago, I stood down there
while a plane was in the 175+ (mph) range. Terrifying! This is the area of
most exposure should something go wrong. Looking back on it, I would never
stand down there again with a plane at speed.

But looking and Jo's video, I can also tell that the Opus is not wound up
much at all. I've seen them go much faster than that, so I know it is no
where near it's structural limit. And I also know that Jo's skill level can
easily handle a plane at that speed so the chances of a crash are pretty
small. I would guess that the layout of the hill limits you to DSing there
instead of the top?

Whoa there Mr. Hotair. "Near weightless rc sailplane surfaces." Maybe for
you when you are flying your Gentle Lady, but for hard core go fast planes, the

Obviously the elevator servo was under a load higher than "near

Re: [RCSE] Surface flutter revisited

2003-02-22 Thread Randy Bullard
But in any case, mass balancing seems very impractical in foam-core RC
glider wings.

Not if what you are doing is trying to break the DS speed record as Craig
is. I've seen the wing. You could support the wing tips and stand on the
center section. And it probably wouldn't flex at all. Craig is one of
several people designing planes to break the DS record.

Surface flutter is one of the main causes of structural failure in DS record
attempts and Craig is trying to eliminate that flutter.

Hopefully Craig or one other true speed freaks working on the record will
break the 200 mph barrier soon.

[RCSE] Fed-X,USPS,UPS

2003-01-10 Thread Randy Bullard
I have worked in a couple of positions where I got to see a lot of packages
come in from the three big shippers. Here are my findings.

Fed-X Air - Either one day or two day is the most reliable at getting your
package there undamaged. Sure they screw up once in a while, but far less
than the others.

Fed-X Ground - These are contract shippers and not really part of Fed-X.
Some are good, and some really suck.

USPS - Very much made fun of, but in my experience, second best to Fed-X
Air. A few months ago, I received a package form them that was mildly
damaged. The contents were ok. Attached to the box was apology from USPS
saying their machine screwed up. That same day, we got package from UPS that
was three times as damaged. No notes what so ever from them.

UPS - Absolutely my last choice. A very large percentage of packages come in
all smashed up and often with holes in them. A few times we've even gotten
packages that were totally flattened and had tire marks on them! About a
month ago, we had a package that took over three weeks to make it from North
Carolina to California.

With the work being done by humans, they all screw up once in a while. But
if I want to ship a valuable plane from one place to another, I use Fed-X
Air. For lesser things, USPS works fine.

Randy Bullard

IMRE, packages sent through USPS should be in a
container than cannot be mishandled (1/4 steel is
recommended). They are good at mangling things and
then acting as if you're lucky to have them. As an
added benefit, they age packages after crushing
(presumably so you'll be so glad to finally get it
that you won't notice an anvil has been dropped on the
 exact center of the box).

getting flutter because of play was a concern.

Office Max, Office Depot and Home Depot. Who carries it?

Thanks,

So by your reasoning Sal is the worst sailplane

UPS is the biggest shipping company in the world. Its
 percentage is growing
every year. There is a reason.

Dear B.goat.

Your theory is flawed. AOL is the largest internet provider. It is also the

Re: [RCSE] 8103 Transmitter Fuse

2002-05-05 Thread Randy Bullard

It is about as easy to re-wire the charging jack as it is to change the
fuse. I re-wired mine after getting to the field one day with out the
adapter cable. Now no more worries about charging the JR along with my
other brands of transmitters.

If you for some reason send it back to the factory, I would wire back or at
least send them a note saying that it has been rewired. What I did would
depend on whether or not it is still in warranty.

Re: [RCSE] Beginner Sailplane...which one???

2002-04-30 Thread Randy Bullard

If you are just beginning, your choices are:

Balsa = fly, crash, repair, repair, repair; fly, crash, repair, repair,
repair and so on until you give up or learn.

Foam = fly, crash, dust it off, fly, crash, laugh, dust if off, fly, crash,
laugh some more and so forth until you learn.

Tough choice.

[RCSE] skills vs tech planes

2001-12-23 Thread Randy Bullard

The current idea of several messages lately would lead you to believe that
you have to be an expert pilot to own one of the newer type planes. That
indeed you should be so good that you automatically know where the CG is. To
that I say bull. You guys selling them should have something in the box that
at least gives the CG and a few other basic things so that the first time
high tech plane buyer knows where to start.

It is true that you cannot go straight from flying a Gentle Lady to a molded
plane, but you don't have to be nationally ranked to have a great time
flying one either. Most of the new high tech planes fly so well that they do
exactly what you tell them to do and nothing else. They are stable and don't
have nasty habits like unexpected tip stalls. Yes, many of them do tend fly
a bit faster, but they more than make up for it in predictability and flying
qualities. I can still vividly remember the first time I launched my first
molded plane. The fist thing I thought after launch was, Wow! I should have
gotten one of these things a long time ago!

If you have been flying 60 slope glass planes or open class sailplanes and
are comfortable doing so, then you are ready for the high tech planes.
Shoot, if I can fly one, anybody can learn to do so.

Re: [RCSE] Logic HLG

2001-12-19 Thread Randy Bullard

We heard that you could, so we tried it with my aging Logic. One of my
friends who has very good DLG experience would toss it and I would fly it. I
wish a video camera had been running because I would like to know what really
happened. About .02 seconds after release the plane snappedinverted at
aboutthree feetoff the ground. Before I could decide what control
input to give it, the Logic met the ground. Total flight time was probably a
second or two.

The fuselage was broken, but nothing that hasn't happened before. It is
back flying again, but not as a DLG.

Randy Bullard

I was wondering if the Logic
could be made a DLG or what would be a fair price to sell a like new
  Logic?

I have been using Compufoil, but I have moved,
changed computers, had a hrddisk die and accidently broken the source
floppy etc...The floppy based copy protection has finally driven me to
look forsomething else. The same thing happened to me, so I
started using a program by Chuck Anderson.Info. is available at http://www.dchobby.com/airfoil/It
is not as detailed (as many functions) as Compufoil, but it doesn't cost
nearly as much and I never used everything Compufoil did
anyway.

[RCSE] Placerville.CA

2001-06-15 Thread Randy Bullard

Are there people that fly in the area of Placerville, CA? We are trying to
decide if we should move to CA with a job opportunity and can't afford the
areas around San Francisco/San Jose. Sacramento has no slopes. (A slope head
here.) It is also flat and hot in the summer. Placerville looks nice and is
still close enough to an airport for work travel. Any other suggestions from
you guys that live out there?

[RCSE] tranport again

2001-02-15 Thread Randy Bullard

Just before I went on a trip I asked on this exchange how best to transport
a Boomerang on the airlines. I got several good suggestions. Thanks to all
that responded. However, things did not go as planned. I got charged $75 by
Delta on departure for having an oversize box.

Some suggestions I got were to wrap it in bubble wrap and take it on board.
While this has worked for some people, the new size limits that were posted
all over the place here clearly stated the nothing as long as a Boomerang
wingspan would be allowed on board. If I was flying first class, I would be
allowed to hang it up front. Otherwise, it might end up in the baggage
compartment. I don't think bubble wrap would have prevented damage if a lot
of suitcases were piled on top of it.

I ended up taking the plane in the box I've always used. I think the main
reason I got charged $75 is because the woman behind the counter was
training another woman and she wanted to show how it was done. I have never
been charged extra before for this box and Aloha did not charge me extra on
two later flights.

I also tried to find a bow case as was suggested. I think this would have
worked great except that nobody had them in stock here because it wasn't
hunting season. Also, if you got the b---h I got you might still get charged

Part of the problem I think is that the airlines are continuing to make
travel harder and harder so that they can squeeze out as much money as
possible. You can expect to not be able to do things you could do in the
past. Also, I would suggest trying to avoid young or in training check-in
people. None of the Aloha airlines people even blinked when I handed them
the box. Some people were even arriving with surf boards!

On a positive note, I got to fly the plane lots and lots of hours and on
some slopes that I can guarantee that I was the first person to fly on.

Aloha,

Randy Bullard

[RCSE] L.T. interviews

2000-12-27 Thread Randy Bullard

To me, one of the coolest parts of Dave's Lift Ticket video was the
interview with Pat Bowman and Joe Wurts on how Pat dicovered EPP for making
planes. Later there on is an interview with Joe about how he discovered DS.
This is real history. Ok, only a small part of history, but still cool
stuff.

Great Video Dave.

Hi folks. I hate to bother you, but I just go the joke.exe virus from
"Hahaha". It talks about Snow White in the body. This virus was to me and
not one of our other email names, so there is a high possibility that
somebody on this list sent it to me. If you have opened the joke.exe file,
(I didn't) you are infected. This is a bad virus. Please get rid of it
before it gets sent to others.

Goop and Shoe Goo are U.S. names. He is in Italy. It probably is not in his
hobby store under those names.

Hopefully somebody else can help Tullio that knows the names of products he
might find over there.

Randy

what kind of other modeler's glue is Goop similar to ?

Household Goop is similar to Shoe Goo. Goop can be found
in hardware stores. Shoe Goo can be found in department
stores. Hobby stores will usually carry one or the
 other.
