JUST HAD IT POINTED OUT THAT SATURDAY IS THE 28TH OCTOBER.

So for those who can not work it out, the comp is on Saturday the 28th

29th.

Please try to be at the East Lomond car park 9.30 sharp.

Oh yeah, that is if the weather is on our side.

If it is not then please be prepared to fly on the flat, bring yer
winch. There are still a few who have NOT got their postal scores in.
Our thermal field runs from SW/ NE, I will have details with me about
where it is but if we go the 5 miles in convoy no one will get lost, I
hope.

[RCSE] Hitec Eclipse???

2006-10-22 Thread Ron Russell
Hi all, a friend of mine has 2 of these radios and has posed a question
about the sets to me, I can't help solve it though.
Basically the Tx's have 2 rotary pots that adjust the flap throws,
together( both up or down) and separately ( one up and one down). Both
are situated on the top of the Tx, one on each side of the aerial
mounting plastic thingummy.
Now forgive for thinking this is a kinda stupid option to put on a Tx
unless you can adjust the throws or simply switch them off.
I am not that familiar with the sets so if any you knowledgeable bunch
can tell me how to sort out these functions I will be delighted to pass
the info on.
It would be nice to adjust the (flaps together) rotary to give a small
percentage of their throw so that the pilot could set the Tx to have
launch flap option on the rotary. The other one we can switch off
completely.

If this does not make sense to an Eclipse expert please get back to me
for more in depth details from this end, thanks.

[RCSE] F3F in Scotland

2006-01-07 Thread Ron Russell
Just a wee reminder that Fife Soarers will be holding an F3f event next

SATURDAY 14/01/06 possibly at East Lomond, 9.30 for 10.00 start.

This is to replace our first Winter League event that was cancelled due
to lack of puff.

Other Winter League dates are published on the Fife Soarers web site,
   www.soar-fife.co.uk

We are hoping to be flying on BISHOP HILL instead of East Lomond,
weather and wind dependant.

Please be at the meeting place sharp so that decisions can be made for
the event venue.

It would be nice to have some flying on the Bishop in the Winter League.

I hope the turn out this time will match the last one, if only the wind
had blown.

Double entries are allowed so anyone wanting to fly 60 as well as, or
just try a different model can. Do not think there will be any
objections.

Please pass this on to any I may have missed and give me a reply or
'phone call to verify your entry. 01592 753689.

2005-12-25 Thread Ron Russell
To all the guys who replied about my camera dilemma, thanks for the
input.
It appears that in the UK, Nikon D70,s are a bit like hens teeth, very
rare. They all seem to got to the U.S. and Japanese markets.

I finally decided not to go for the Canon 350d as I felt it was not
comfy to hold, a bit too tiny. It felt really nice the first few times I
held it but after handling a couple of other cameras with better hand
grips I had gone off it.
I chose the Nikon D50 plus a couple of lenses giving me a range from
18mm to 300mm.
Now to learn how to use it.
Again thanks guys, merry Xmas and a Happy Hew Year.
Hope to take some of your pics at the Viking Race 2006.

Just doin a bit of tidy up and have rediscovered a couple of very rare
old UK kits.

VERON Mini Robot, complete untouched model kit, 36 span, trike u/c
shoulder wing power model, mint condition. Open to sensible offers.

Kiel Kraft Pitts Special, 22 span rubber powered kit, what more can I
say, it is in immaculate condition, untouched, unbuilt, mint!
This should be worth quite a bit of money to a collector, I have never
seen this model in any shop apart from one and that was some25 - 30
years ago. What's it worth to anyone?

Re: [RCSE] OVSS...line break policy?

2005-05-17 Thread Ron Russell
In message [EMAIL PROTECTED], James V.
Bacus [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes

I have been reading this thread with interest, waiting to see which
route you would follow in the US.
Might I suggest that you consider looking at the rules that are supplied
and actioned during BARCS competitions in the UK.
We have been using winches for a while here as well and we have been
flying man on man comps for longer so we do have a fair bit of knowledge
on the subject.
The rules we use in the UK, have proved to be very fair in use, and that
is more important than any written words on the subject.

There is always the possibility that a line break will occur that the
pilot or winch driver has no control over, likewise there will always be
line breaks that can be directly attributed to the actions of either
pilot or winch driver, deliberate or accidental.
Proving that would be impossible so it is best ignored completely.
If a line break occurs then the pilot will loose out on some points,
tough. An immediate relaunch will not see him too far behind the others
and may even work to his benefit if the others have launched into sink.
That is simply part of the game we play.
We tend to allow any available winch to be used for a relaunch, not just
the pilots own personal one. If the pilot deems to use their own after
the line has been retrieved and repaired then that is up to the
individual. The pilot also has the option to call for a relaunch
immediately and land within one minute or attempt to fly out the slot if
he/she feels that the air is good enough. Errors in judgement will and
do happen, that too is part of the game.
Enough of this speech, it is only my own personal opinion.
Please, go to the BARCS web site and have a look at the rules they apply
to their open competitions, it may just be your answer and is certainly
worth a serious consideration.

That is the way it is traditionally done in the OVSS, but where you are
most likely to see line break action is in the last group with the
strongest pilots, and that round is always filled so there will never be an
empty slot to allow someone in.

Chicago SOAR always restrings its winches with fresh #290 before a OVSS
weekend.

Re: [RCSE] Pike V-tail Antenna

2004-10-23 Thread Ron Russell
In message [EMAIL PROTECTED], Bob Peck
[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes
Pike Owner's,
What is your antenna solution for the v-tail? I have seen the Samba
website but would like to know of your practical experience. This is my
second Pike. My first is a light model with the antenna ran through the wing
D connector out into the wing behind the spar and carbon D-tube leading
edge. It ground checks OK and I can fly it at the edge of my sight with no
problems.(72mHz)
My new Pike (50mHz) has a carbon center section and I won't use the
above setup. I built another with a carbon c-section Pike and doubled the
antenna length to .5 wave and dangled it out the back of the fuse. Reception
is good, but it looks like hell and it is bothersome during launch. Any
suggestions? BTW radio equipment is Airtronics TX/RX.

Hi there, I have a few Pikes and have tried all the options on the web
site. I prefer the split V extension where aerial wire is fed up both
tailplane halves and only an inch or so is left dangling in the breeze.
With the cross tail I extend and run the aerial up the rudder trailing
edge.
With the V Extreme the wire is extended and only goes up one tailplane
half, no reason except to try it. All methods work well, no glitches or
unexpected flap/aileron movements that can be traced to the radio.
I unfortunately have to admit that the unqualified wobbles are all pilot
induced.

to go for the Canon S1 IS. SLR shaped, 10 times zoom, 1 gig memory card
will give you 30 mins good quality video. VHS or NTSC.
3.2 MEG piccies, big enough for high quality A4 size prints.
Takes AA pencell batteries, now we all have plenty of those. Look it up
on the web and price match before you buy, I saved over £100.00 UK
pounds.

Hope it helps.

[RCSE] F3F this weekend.

2003-09-02 Thread Ron Russell

SEPTEMBER 7, SEPTEMBER 7, SEPTEMBER 7, SEPTEMBER 7,

An F3F AND 60 racing event is scheduled to be held this weekend at East
Lomond Hill, Fife.

Please earmark this event in your calendar.

Please note that if the event can not be held for weather reasons, flat
conditions then an alternate F3B type event can be run on one off our
flat field sites.
We now have 2 flat field sites in easy access from the hill that are
available.

WE WILL FLY.

Please make this weekend a goody, we are decidedly short of racing
events this year so come along and join in.
Please pass the message on to any non computer fliers and to any missed
from the list.

[RCSE] Slope Event ( Scotland)

2003-06-12 Thread Ron Russell

22nd June 2003, 22nd June 2003, 22nd June 2003,

Scot Nats F3f and other slope events to be held hopefully at East
Lomond/ Bishop Hill, Fife.

Please earmark this event for your calendar.

2nd Please make this weekend a goody, we have lost enough flying time
this year already.

3rd Please pass this message on to any non computer fliers, thanks.

4th Please reply to this mail, let me know if you will or won't be
there, it does help me get the prep work done.
We need and want more than 8 to get a decent comp.

Maybe if SOARHIGH read this they may offer a couple of prizes, what do
you think Guy and Gary?

Entry fees will be held to a minimal level.

SCOT NATS 22ND JUNE

For the event on the 8th June, 8 fliers called and let me know they
would be there, THANK YOU guys, glad to know that you are still alive
and raring to get some speed work in.

SCOT NATS 22ND JUNE
Will now ONLY be flown on the Sunday. It was planned to be 2 days but
one will suffice at a push.
Hopefully this will encourage you out of your homes to compete. How does
that sound?

Come on lads, we need the numbers to make it worthwhile for myself and
the S.A.A. to keep organising them.
If we are getting it wrong, let us know, we can change the formats for
the events.
What we can not change is either the scheduled dates, they have to be
set at the start of the year, or the weather, it has been perfectly
flyable the last 2 event dates but lack of entries meant that no one
could actually compete.
Lets make a change and get some good racing in at the next date.

Yes that is the 22ND JUNE 2003.

With all the talk of winglets on full size gliders, why don't we see them on
RC gliders? It seems like a well designed set could really improve the
aerodynamics of the outer few percent of the wing. Are they just not
popular or are they not useful?

Actually they are available on some moulded kits and seem to work (ish)
Have a look at the Corrado on the Soarhigh Model Group web page. I am
sure that there must be someone in the US importing this model,
otherwise contact Soarhigh who will be pleased to sell you one.
And thansk for the great answers on the futaba/Airtronics question :)

RCSE'rs,

Now that I'm back in the States, I'm going to need to stock up on 72mhz
receivers. I sold all my 35mhz stuff when I left Scotland and
currently only have 1 Multiplex IPD receiver on 72mhz. Basically, I
need RX's to use with my MultiPlex Profi mc3030 transmitter in the
following planes:

6-servo F3B racer (I'll use the IPD here)
   6-servo TD model (another IPD?)
   2x 2-servo HLG (something light)
   2-servo Wanderer (something cheap?)
2x 2-servo foamies (something tough cheap)

What are folks using in the lightweight DLG's? How about in 48 foamie
combat planes?

Brad, you left too early.
We now have the Acacia HLG for DISCUS launching. He,he,he!!

Congratulations on your fourteenth place in the W.C.

I'll second that!
Also, according to the rumour mill it was with an Ellipse 2V...
Hey Carl, hasn't anyone told you that's a F3B plane, not a F3J one?
And that it's outdated anyway?

Don't knock the Ellipses, currently the Ellipse 2V holds the f3f record
as well.
There was an Ellipse 1T flown into 2nd place at our recent Scottish
thermal Nats.

Naturally a Pike Plus won that event.

Re: [RCSE] Dick Barker, the Uplink, and a very nice morning

1999-12-06 Thread Ron Russell

In message 000101bf3fa5$f7afa3a0$17810ccf@sarah-s-machine, Scobie
Puchtler or Sarah Felstiner [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes

Is there any plan, kit available for the Uplift?
I would love to give it a try, and do some of my own comparisons.
Call me please.
A few days back, I wrote Dick Barker (the infamous self proclaimed old fart
glider flyer!)an email asking if there might be a time that he'd be willing
to show me his wingtip-discus launch HLG, the Uplink. He got back to me
almost immediately with a proposed date and location, and just this
Saturday, the morning found the two of us out at Seattle's beautiful
Magnuson Park, swinging his composite creations into the air with Mount
Ranier hovering in the distant background.

When I arrived at the park, Dick was already at it. He took a break and
showed me the various structural details of his design, many of which have
been engineered specifically to handle the rather extreme side loads
inherent to the discus style wingtip launch. Despite these special strength
requirements, Dick has managed to pare his design down to a very competitive
finished weight. And then there's the launch.

As far as I can tell, a decent technique with this glider will very simply
get you a higher launch by a SIGNIFICANT margin than you can expect with any
other competitive HLG anywhere. And this launch is achievable with little
body stress when compared to javelin/overhand technique.

I watched Dick do several launches and get incredible air time in almost
zero-lift conditions. We were flying from a parking lot to avoid the
pudding-like ground that most Seattle parks have to offer this time of year,
and Dick showed a well-seasoned thumb coming home a few inches over the
asphalt, often in a bank, then pulling up into a perfectly stalled handcatch
every time and never a scrape.

I took out my lightweight Red Herring to warm up my arm and thumb, also
figuring that if Dick saw me make a few halfway competent throws and
catches, he might be more likely to offer me some stick time with the Uplink
over this fuse-eating asphalt field.

The offer did come, and I accepted nervously, having very little time with
anthing like a fully horizontal discus type launch. My first few attempts
were quite pitiful and far too vertical, with my Red Herring instincts
winning over Dick's careful instructions and me nervously groping around to
turn off the launch preset on an unfamiliar TX. But by the sixth or seventh
try, things began to come together, and in minutes I was certainly launching
higher than I've ever thrown any full sized HLG. The neat thing was it was
SO easy on my somewhat tender right shoulder, plus I had the distinct
feeling that I wasn't yet putting anything like my full energy into the
throw and that with some more time, I could easily make significantly better
finished altitudes.

As for the actual air time, it was also a pleasure. The Uplink has an
impressive L/D, most clearly demonstrated to me during a few runs home from
low altitude with no lift. I seemed to be able to milk out distance well
beyond my expectations. Handling was a little unusual as Dick said it would
be due to the relatively shallow polyhedral form in the wings, but I could
always get what I wanted from the glider. Speed range and energy retention
were both very impressive.

There is little question in my mind that gliders like the Uplink, set up for
full force discus-stlye tip launch will have some distinct competitive
advantages due to pure launch height improvement and that the incredibly
long dead-air hang times could make for more satisfying competitions in
areas of the country not blessed with constantly booming lift. Furthermore,
the lack of stress on the body, or at least very different stresses when
compared with overhand/javelin throwing, seem to allow for a far wider field
of potential competitors in the sport.

Thanks Dick for all your hard work with this design and this technique, and
for sharing it with me Saturday morning. Even though I don't currently have
any plans to compete, I wouldn't be at all surprised if a tip launch HLG
shows up somewhere in my future. There are just too many advantages for me
to ignore.

Lift,
Scobie in Seattle
