[RCSE] World Air Games 2009 Top Pilot Rankings

2008-06-20 Thread Ron Scharck
For those of you who are interested in the 2009 World Air Games pilot
rankings, as of Wednesday, June 18, the following was sent to me by Guy
Revel, Chairman of the FAI/CIAM 2009 WAG selection committee:

The results and ranking are online since a couple of hours ago.
http://wag2009.free.fr/ciam_sel_rank.htm#HTG

http://wag2009.free.fr/ciam_sel_HTG_res.htm

Additionally, he wrote: I'm sure Oleg (Golovidov) and Paul (Anderson) will
be invited, my guess at this point is that the cut off mark will be around
200 to 250 points, so one more contest could be helpful to Phil and I'm sure
there is still room for one or two more US pilots (possibly more).

For those of who entered the Poway version of the USA National WAG Selection
Contest, take note of your scores and then compare those with the scores you
can get by just having a contest of 12 or so pilots. If you want to go to
Turin, Italy next June, with your stay there being paid for by FAI/CIAM, you
might want to consider having a National WAG Selection Contest of your own.
Note: Your top two scores count toward the World Ranking. I think it would
be great to have the US represented with the most pilots at the WAGs.

For those of you on the West Coast (or nearby) that would like to compete in
another WAG Selection Contest, ping me privately.

[RCSE] World Air Games 2009 Standings

2008-06-14 Thread Ron Scharck
After the USA National World Air Games 2009 Selection Contest that was held
in Poway this Friday a week ago, the top 16 pilots eligible for an
invitation at this time are as follows according to Guy Revel of the
FAI/CIAM:

According to the short list of 8 top placers at Poway, the present (partial)
ranking is as follows:

Nation World ranking Best 2 contests out of
Sacha Monnom BEL 616,23 2
Oleg Golovidov USA 547,72 1
Massimiliano Sacchi ITA 524,96 2
Ricardas Siumbris LTU 400,00 1
Mark Stockton RSA 374,54 2
Kevin Botherway NZL 374,17 1
David Claeys BEL 308,11 2
Stephane DuPonsel RSA 298,61 2
Paul Anderson USA 273,86 1
Stefano Corno ITA 229,13 1
Carlo Cobianchi ITA 214,56 2
Olivier Leroy BEL 212,74 3
Vitalijus Pilkionis LTU 200,00 1
Alan Smith RSA 194,72 2
Joe Wurts NZL 187,08 1
Phil Barnes USA 182,57 1
Alberto Consolini ITA 179,16 2
Lionel Smith RSA 161,80 2

So if everything was stopped right now, there would be 3 US pilots invited.
This will change with more contests, for example there are two more
scheduled in New Zealand, more contests in the US would almost certainly
increase the number of US pilots at WAG.

Note: Most of the other pilots have all flown in two contests.

[RCSE] USA National World Air Games 2009 Selection Contest (Poway) Results

2008-06-12 Thread Ron Scharck
The Poway version of the USA National WAG 2009 Selection Contest was held on
Friday afternoon, June 6th at the Torrey Pines Gulls Poway Flight Center.
Here is the official report on the event.

First, I want to thank Mike Seid, Parviz Kamib and Brad Willoughby for being
there to assist me in getting through the contest. I also want to thank the
Joys (George and Jo), John Bruner and John Hammond for their help. Keith
Finkenbiner was the Official Observer as required by FAI for this event
(F6D) and he did a very official job. There were other club members who
came out to help as is always required and very much appreciated.

For those of you who have not already checked out the format of F6D, which
is the required contest format for being considered for an invitation to the
World Air Games 2009 in Turin, Italy next June, I invite you to go to our
web site (http://www.torreypinesgulls.org) and click on the USA National
World Air Games 2009 Selection Contest banner. That will take you to our
website for this event. We chose to have only one Qualifying round since our
event. We had 40 pilots compete in the event, of which 10 were international
pilots (5 from Brazil; 4 from New Zealand and one from Canada). From the
Qualifying Round, the top 24 pilots were selected. They were divided into
two flight groups of 12 and we began the Semi-final round. Each group flew
the All-up task. At the conclusion of the Semi-final round, the top 8 US
pilots and the top two International pilots moved on to the Fly-offs. The
Fly-offs consisted of one throw of All-up with the first pilot down (or
otherwise scoring a zero) out of the contest. All remaining pilots are
brought down for a repeat performance until there is only one pilot
remaining.

Due to the number of pilots, we flew 4 flight groups in the Qualifying
rounds. The top 24 pilots that made it to the Semi-finals were: Oleg
Golovidov; Mike Smith; Jun Catacutan; Phil Barnes; Larry Jolly; Gordy Stahl;
Kevin Botherway (NZ); Paul Anderson; Arend Borst (Canada); Mario Sergio De
Lucca (Brazil); Aradhana Singh Khalsa; Darwin Barrie; John Erickson; Bruce
Davidson; Brad Willoughby; Bill Chase; Richard Pinho (Brazil); Mike Seid;
Chris Adams; Jonathan Bryan; Lex Mierop; Adam Weston; Terry Kopland; and
Mike Leggett.

The top ten pilots (eight US and two International) that made the cut and
were in the Fly-offs were in order of finish:
1. Oleg Golovidov
2. Paul Anderson
3. Phil Barnes
4. Adam (Red) Weston
5. Kevin Botherway (NZ) Winner of the International Class Championship
6. Bruce Davidson
7. Larry Jolly
8. Arend Borst (Canada)
9. Mike Smith
10. Jun Catacutan

Congratulations to the top ten pilots and thanks to all the rest who
participated. I also want to recognize and issue a very special thanks to
our Host Sponsors JR DSM Radios, Spektrum Radios and Horizon Hobby. Without
the pilots and the sponsors, there would not have been this venture into the
world of F6D. From the after contest discussions, it appears that there may
be more of these contests held in the US and in Brazil.

frequency assignments for the IHLGF 2008 within the next two days on the
IHLGF 2008 website:: http://www.torreypinesgulls.org/2008IHLGF.htm. . If
your name does not appear on the roster and you believe you have registered,
please contact me directly and we will get the matter cleared up.

We also want to let you know that if you are not on the roster and want to
participate in this year's IHLGF (June-7-8), you have until Tuesday, June

to make sure we can facilitate your frequency choices, please be sure to
select THREE (3) frequencies. We will do our best to give you your first
choice but cannot guarantee it. Please register as soon as possible.

Third item, and this is important for anyone planning on flying on the Poway
field on Friday afternoon; Due to the F6D contest which is being held on
Friday afternoon, the field will be closed on Friday afternoon to any flying
except for those registered in the F6D contest. There is no entry fee and
the F6D tasks are very similar to two of the F3K tasks you will be flying in
the IHLGF, so there really is no reason for you not to register. Consider it
a real practice session for the IHLGF. You must register on-line on the USA

[RCSE] Welcome to the IHLGF 2008

2008-03-10 Thread Ron Scharck
HLG Enthusiasts Worldwide:

The Torrey Pines Gulls and HORIZON HOBBY and JR Radios, our 2008 Co-Hosts,
are please to announce that the 15th IHLGF will be held June 7-8, 2008 in
Poway, CA (30 miles northeast of downtown San Diego). This great event will
have a few new wrinkles. This year we will be using the newly adopted
international FAI F3K Rules and tasks. We have made a few exceptions to the
rules but they are mainly Poway field specific. As I went through the F3K
Rules (which include the tasks), I was surprised at how close they are to
those that we have used for years. I guess that original input we made to
the F3K process years ago, plus the influence of the international pilots
that have participated in the IHLGF over the years, actually had some
influence on the final product.

The other wrinkle is that we are opening up entry for the IHLGF 2008
immediately. You don't need to wait till April 1st as in the past. Click on
the IHLGF 2008 website and get all the information on the event and register
while you are at it. Here is the link:
http://www.torreypinesgulls.org/2008IHLGF.htm

There is some anticipation that there will be a F3K World Championships held
in 2009. Confirmation of this will not be known until after the FAI meetings
in March. Should this come to pass, the IHLGF will be at the top of the list
as one of the qualifier contests for the selection of the USA F3K Team. We
had actually decided to change over to the F3K Rules before we knew of a F3K
World Championship simply because it just made sense to do so; especially
since they are so close to what we have been flying for years. This way, we
are all on the same page.

By the way, we already have commitments from four pilots from Argentina and
four from New Zealand.

We look forward to seeing you the first full weekend in June. If I can be of
any assistance, please feel free to contact me.

I used a 9-pin D-sub. male in the wing and the stripped female (take away

female was glued in the fuse with hot plastic glue (dont know the english

Antenna is stretched and glued as a Y antenna. Probably enough with

[RCSE] IHLGF 2006 - Looking Back

2006-06-06 Thread Ron Scharck

The IHLGF 2006 is now
history. The final IHLGF 2006 Contest Scores for All Classes may be found on the
IHLGF website: http://www.torreypinesgulls.org/IHLGF2006.htm.
Congratulations to Paul Anderson, the new IHLGF Champion. Paul has been very
close many times, but this weekend he came from behind in the Fly-offs to take
the championship. Known for his aggressiveNo
Fearand almost magical flying style, Paul has been in the top ten
almost every year he has participated. That same style has cost him the
Championship on a number of occasions. No one was more congratulatory of his
victory than many times IHLGF champion, Joe Wurts the man he nudged out
of first place to take the victory.

After ten grueling rounds
(six in 102 degree heat on Saturday), Joe Wurts, had a respectable lead going
into the fly-offs. His two departures from the perfect mark (1000 per round)
were 998.31 and 935.27, which occurred in the first and second round
respectively; were talking seconds off perfect. Hot (no pun intended) on
Joes heels was the guy that everyone knew would someday take the IHLGF Championship
someday Paul Anderson. The other pilots that fought their way into the
top ten were: Phil Barnes (2004 and 2005 IHLGF Champion); Chris Tank from New
Zealand; Thomas Kiesling; Bob McGowan; Oleg Golovidov (2003 IHLGF Champion); Arthur
Markiewicz; Phil Pearson (Mr. Encore); and Joseph Newcomb, a member of the
USAs Junior F3B Team

International pilots have
cracked the top ten before, but Chris Tank, of New Zealand, took the
I in International Hand Launch Glider Festival a huge step
forward yesterday by placing third. As a matter of fact, the entire New Zealand
team was outstanding. Peter Williams placed 15th; Shaun Mitchell and
Lewis Williams (the Junior Champion) took the 20th and 21st
spots, respectively. The Skunk Werks (the handle affectionately
given the New Zealand
team because of their distinctive black shirts with a white stripe running from
sleeve to sleeve) were indeed outstanding.

The other international
team, the three member Japanese team of Yoichi Kajiro, Toyohiko Asazuma and Michihito
Nozokido, were in awe of the level of competition at the IHLGF. All are very
accomplished HLG pilots three of the best in Japan the Japanese
Team promised that now that they are aware of the level of talent they must
face here, they are going back home to practice; practice; practice
so that when they return next year they will be better prepared to compete
against the best in the world.

Joseph Newcomb, a junior,
registered in Open Class at the last minute with an eye toward a fly-off spot
in the IHLGF. The talent behind his confidence was never in question to Joseph
or anyone who knows him. His quite, unassuming, yet determined
personality belies the talent that this young man possesses. Should he decide
to continue his participation in the IHLGF, Joseph may well be the next young
lion to capture the golden ring the IHLGF Championship. Other young
lions to keep an eye on are this years IHLGF Junior Champion, Lewis
Williams; A. J. McGowan (the talent pool in the McGowan family is
deep) and Fateh Singh Khalsa, who participated in his first HLG event at last
years IHLGF.

There were 75 registered
pilots of which 69 competed. From the standpoint of talent, this years IHLGF
was second to none. In short, there was unbelievable talent in the top twenty
pilots. Many familiar names, all with Champion titles, were
unable to break into the top ten this year. Not to worry. They are just waiting
till next year to make their moveagain.

IHLGF 2007 dates: June 2-3.
Mark your calendars now!

[RCSE] IHLGF 2005 Final Scores

2005-06-15 Thread Ron Scharck

We have cleaned up
our act and made the final score sheets easier to read and, for those picky
ones out there that actually want to see all of the rounds posted, we have
included all the pilots and all the rounds, even the Throw-out rounds.

Thanks to all the
pilots who attended, especially those who had to travel long distances to get
here. Thanks is a little short of expressing our appreciation to
those International pilots, all nine of you, who among other things, had to
show a passport or visa to get here. What a great opportunity it is to be able
to mix and mingle, talk and commiserate, listed and learn from such a broad
range of talent from the width and breadth of the US to the four corners of the
world. All this and fly HLGs for three days. It's hard to believe and yet it
happens every year at the IHLGF.

Next years dates:
June 3-4, 2006. Hope to see you here!

2005-06-10 Thread Ron Scharck
Michael:

You are certainly right about the fact that we do have some of the not
great weather, which is why I put (relatively speaking) behind the great
weather statement. So here is a clue direct from the weatherman...San Diego
does have some hot and humid days, with an (very) occasional thunderstorm in
the months of late July and August. And it has a rainy season during the
first three months of the year. Hey, Michael...365 days of the same weather
would be like being in Seattle:) P.S. We love those guys from the SASS
group. They are our most dedicated group from outside California.

So here is a clue of when to come to San Diego...the first full weekend in
June. Oh! And while you are here, bring a HLG and have a great time
competing in the IHLGF -- the most fun and flying time you can have in R/C
Soaring.

One other thing Ron. You do a good job of promoting the event.

And the Nats suffers from just the opposite on the weather. There were
many years when soaring was stuck in the last week of July. By the last
week in July, Muncie is usually hot and humid.

Of course, every time I have been to San Diego, I have managed to get
some of the not great weather. It's just not right to get hot and humid
and thunderstorms in San Diego.

LSF guys do a great job (in cooperation with AMA) of putting on a host of
soaring events, most of which are very demanding from a personnel
standpoint; and they only have a week to in which to cram all those
events.
I know that I am not telling you, or anyone else who reads this and has
actually been to the Soaring NATS, anything new.

In real estate, something I have a passing knowledge of, the three key
words
are: LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! The IHLGF has that in spades. When
someone plans to come to the IHLGF, they can be assured of four things
which
few other locations can boast...and they all have to do with being located
in Southern California: 1. Great weather, relatively speaking; 2. Great
flying conditions (if you don't mind a dirt field); 3. A large contingent
of
very talented pilots; and, 4. One of the top tourist destinations in the
world. In all of the years (12) the IHLGF has been held, there has only
been
two delays of starting the contest on time. Both had to do with an early
morning misting. There has always been 6 rounds flown on Saturday and
seven
(including the fly-offs) rounds flown on Sunday.

Those are the basic reasons why the IHLGF has been able to be as
successful
as it has been. Just the dumb luck of being in the right place at the
right
 time!

[RCSE] IHLGF 2005 Update - DSL Clinic

2005-06-01 Thread Ron Scharck

For those of you who
will be attending the IHLGF 2005 DSL Clinic, please note the following:

The clinic will begin
promptly at noon on Friday, June 3rd. You must be registered at the
field to attend the Clinic. Pilot registration will begin on Friday morning at
9:00 A.M. The Ground School portion on the clinic will take place from Noon to
1:30 P.M. The Flight School portion of the clinic will be from 1:30 to 3:00.

Frequency control for
the Clinic attendees will be accomplished by assigning a frequency range to
each flight group. See below. Respective frequency pins will be given to each
flight group and frequency control will be the responsibility of each group.

In order to facilitate
the DSL Clinic, the field will be closed to flying from Noon to 3:00 P.M. on
Friday.

If you would like a copy of the DSL Clinic syllabus

[RCSE] IHLGF 2005 - Final Pilot Roster

2005-05-23 Thread Ron Scharck
The IHLGF 2005 final Pilot Roster will be posted today, May 23, to the IHLGF
2005 website (http://www.torreypinesgulls.org/IHLGF2005.htm). As you will
note from the Representing column, the U.S pilots came from the East coast
to the West Coast; from the Canadian border to the Mexican border and a host
of states in between. We are especially grateful to our international pilots
who will be representing New Zealand, Brazil, France, England, Taiwan, and
Japan.

Thanks to all who had an interest in our event for this year. From the
registration figures, the DSL (Discus Style Launch) Clinic was one of the
factors that drew the record breaking attendance at this years IHLGF. Thanks
to all the World Class pilots that volunteered to conduct this first for
us event.

If you missed the IHLGF 2005, mark your calendars for the first full weekend
in June, 2006 for the next great IHLGF.

[RCSE] IHLGF 2005 - Pilot Roster/Channel Update as of 5-12

2005-05-20 Thread Ron Scharck
Dear HLG Enthusiasts:

On behalf of the Torrey Pines Gulls, our Platinum Sponsor, Airtronics, and
our Gold Sponsors - Composite Structures Technology (CST); FMA Direct;
Hitec/RCD; Hobbico-Futaba Radios; Horizon-JR Radios; Hobby Club; Kennedy
Composites; Maple Leaf Designs; Peak Electronics and R/C Direct, I want to
thank everyone for the tremendous interest in the IHLGF 2005. For only the
second time in our 12 years of holding this little contest we have exceeded
the limit of 90 registered pilots. Not only do we have more pilots than
ever registered for the event, but we also have the largest contingent of
International pilots (12) representing the largest number of countries (6).
The US is well represented with 79 pilots from 16 states -- from Washington
to Florida; California to Massachusetts; Texas to Minnesota and a host of
wonderful states in between.

I also want to thank all the pilots who registered for the DSL Clinic.
Without the very generous donation of time and talent that the world class
instructors have committed to make this wonderful opportunity a reality,
there would be no DSL Clinic and for this we all say THANKS!

The new updated IHLGF 2005 Pilot Roster, with assigned channels, will be
posted to the IHLGF 2005 website
(http://www.torreypinesgulls.org/IHLGF2005.htm) today. If you are a
registered pilot, please check and make sure you know your assigned channel.
If you think you have registered and your name does not appear on this
roster, I would suggest that you contact me immediately at 619-913-4949.
Wednesday, May 18th, will be the final day before the roster is set in
stone.

Thanks again for your overwhelming support of the IHLGF 2005. We look
forward to seeing you the first week of June.

[RCSE] IHLGF 2005 - Last Chance to Enter

2005-05-09 Thread Ron Scharck
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Your overwhelming response to the IHLGF 2005 and the FREE DSL
Clinic has resulted in a sold out, 90 pilot registration. Even though the 90
pilot limit (15 pilots per heat with 6 heats in a round) has been reached,
we know from doing this many years that some of those paid registrations may
not be able to make the event. So the IHLGF 2005 Committee has decided to
accept 5 more registrations. If you have been holding off, this will be your
last chance to enter. The next five paid registrations will be accepted,
provided your frequency is still available.

For information on the IHLGF 2005, the DSL Clinic, and an entry
form for the IHLGF 2005, go to
http://www.torreypinesgulls.org/IHLGF2005.htm. Please fill out the entry
form (be sure to include at least 2 frequency choices) and then fax it to me
at 760-634-0620. By doing so, I will be able to include you in the frequency
allotment. Also, be sure and indicate on the form if you want to attend the
FREE DSL (Discus Style Launch) Clinic. I will still need you to mail me the
original entry form along with a check for the appropriate amount to the
address on the entry form.

NOTE: The following frequencies (channels) are closed: 19, 25, 30, 31, 33,
34, 40, 42, 50, 51, 52, and 54.

The following frequencies (channels) have no one on them: HAM 3, 4, 5, 9;

Once again, thank you for your continued support of the IHLGF.

The IHLGF 2005 Pilot Roster, complete with assigned frequencies, may be

there is still an opportunity...but don't wait too long. If you want to be
included in the IHLGF 2005, fax the entry form to me at 760-634-0620 and
then send in the original entry form together with the appropriate funds.

Be sure to read about the DSL (Discus Style Launch) Clinic on the IHLGF 2005

necessary that you let me know that you want to attend the Clinic. Do so on
the registration form or if you have already registered and your name does

[RCSE] IHLGF Notes and Congratulations!

2003-06-09 Thread Ron Scharck
I wanted to be one of the first to send congratulations to the new IHLGF
Champion, Oleg Golovidov. Oleg's IHLGF victory and the seemingly impossible
feat of beating Joe Wurts put him in a very rare class. The only other
person to beat Joe Wurts at the IHLGF is Daryl Perkins who did it back to
back in 1996 and 1997. Oleg is now breathing rare air - that which was
formerly restricted to multiple time World Champions!

Many of us have the privilege of knowing Oleg personally and more of us know
him from his accomplishments in the HLG/DLG arena. Either way you have to be
impressed with this young man from Russia who has only been in the United
States a relatively short time. Oleg first entered the IHLGF in 1999 where
he placed 22nd. He has returned to compete in the IHLGF every year since
with the explicit goal of winning the contest many call the (unofficial)
world championship of HLG. Last year, flying his own design the Taboo, Oleg
came ever so close but when all the dust cleared, the venerable Joe Wurts
edged Oleg out in the fly-offs to garner the IHLGF 2002 Championship.

With a whole host of championship caliber pilots on the heels of Joe every
year, it was only a matter of time when even the world's greatest HLG pilot
would make that one mistake in judgment or miss that one nearly phantom down
wind thermal that would allow a new champion. But there had to be someone
who could challenge Joe to the brink. Last year Craig Greening let Joe know
that he was a factor to be reckoned with. Two years ago, Oleg pushed Joe to
the very limits missing the championship by a mere 9 points (out of 12,000).
This year the master blinked and the challenger took advantage of the
opportunity. And the crowd of IHLGF contestants, spectators and Joe Wurts
cheered the new Champion.

Congratulations, Oleg!

On behalf of the Torrey Pines Gulls, the IHLGF Committee and the Sponsors of
the IHLGF 2003, I want to thank each and every one of the 80 pilots who
choose to spend June 7th and 8th in Poway, California this year flying HLG's
and being a part of HLG history as a participant in the IHLGF 2003. Special
thanks go to our International pilots, many of whom travel great distances
to compete with the worlds largest assemblage of championship caliber HLG
pilots. You, the pilots are what makes the IHLGF the event that it is.
Without you, there would be no IHLGF.

So, begin now to make plans to attend the IHLGF 2004, June 5th and 6th.

[RCSE] IHLGF 2003 Announcement II

2003-02-13 Thread Ron Scharck

If you have
already seen this be sure to see NEW INFO regarding Motels Rooms at
bottom!

2003
International Hand Launch Glider Festival
The Torrey Pines Gulls and AIRTRONICS are pleased
to announce thetenth annual International Hand Launch Glider Festival
(IHLGF) will take place June7 and8 at the TPG Poway Flight Center,
Poway (San Diego), California.
The international reputation that the IHLGF has developed over the years is
due in great part to a combination of the competition format that the IHLGF has
created and the wealth of championship caliber pilots from all over the world
that gather each year in Poway to battle for the unofficial World Championship
of HLG. You don't have to be a world caliber pilot to have a great time at the
IHLGF. Thesheerjoy of two days (actually three or four for most
pilots) of flying HLG's with a great group of pilots, combined with the "social"
aspect of the IHLGF is what makes this "event" so popular.
As for the international aspect of the IHLGF, as ofthis date, we have
commitments frompilots from New Zealand, Canada, and Japan. We are also
expecting participants from Switzerland,Argentina and Texas.Germany
and Austria have also indicated an interest. We love our international pilots!
Not only are they great pilots but they are always great ambassadors for their
countries.
After two years ofadapting the Tasks and Rules to adjust to
theDiscus Style Launch (DSL)we have, what we feel is, a finished
product. With one minor revision from last years Tasks, the rest of
thecontest format that has proven so popular will remain the same. You can
expect 6 rounds of competition on Saturday, followed by four rounds on Sunday.
The top ten pilots, as determined by the 10 rounds of open competition, will
compete in a three round fly off to determine the 2003 IHLGF Champion and final
standing for the remaining nine pilots.Awards will begiven through
tenth place. Additionally, there will bea Junior (age 15 and under)
Championship and three Eagle (55+) Class awards.
The entry fee for the two-day contest will be $50. Included in the entry fee
will be a complementary lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Entries will be limited to
90 pilots.
The official registration packet will be mailed the first week in March. If
you have participated in the IHLGF in any of the last 3 years, you are on our
mailing list. If you have moved during that time or if you know someone who
would be interested in additional information or receiving a registration
packet, please give me a call at 619-725-5434 or better yet, e-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED].

The International Hand Launch Glider Festival, AKA, "IHLGF";

for one reason or another, don't hesitate now. E-mail me with your registration
information and 3 (if possible) frequency choices. Registration information may
be found at the TPG website www.torreypinesgulls.org

We look forward to hearing from you.

Re: [RCSE] Flying at Torrey Pines

2002-02-15 Thread Ron Scharck

Steve:

As long as you are an AMA member, there is no trick to flying at Torrey
Pines. There is a facility on site where you must register. There is a $5 a
day fee for flying there. The scenery alone is worth the $5.

The main problem with Torrey is the air traffic congestion since it is also
a favorite spot for hang gliders and paragliders. This is one area where you
really have to watch the traffic. The weekends is where you will find most
of the R/C guys, especially the Scale guys. On a good Sunday there is a
carpet of scale sailplanes...a truely beautiful sight, both on the ground
and in the air.

One of the regulars there is Ron Brown. A really nice guy that will make
sure you feel right at home. Others to ask for are Larry and/or Gary Fogel.
If you meet Larry, thank him. He single handedly preserved Torrey Pines as a
flying sight by getting it acknowledged by the Sate of California as a State
Historical Site. Charles Lindberg learned to fly gliders there. For more
information on Torrey Pines, the Gliderport and the Torrey Pines Gulls club
check out our website at torreypinesgulls.org

Hope this helps,

Subject: [RCSE] Flying at Torrey Pines

Anyone a member of the Torrey Pines Gulls? Have tried to contact the
club via their web site as I'll be in San Diego for a couple of days at
the end of this month and was hoping to bring a sailplane along for a
little flying on 2/27 or 2/28.

Any info greatly appreciated. Flying on channel 15.

 Thanks,

 Steve

[RCSE] International Hand Launch Glider Festival

2001-03-10 Thread Ron Scharck

They say the best advertising is "word of mouth." Instead of me telling you
what a great contest the IHLGF is, I thought it much better to quote from one of
the articles written about last years IHLGF
"You've heard the business term "continuos improvement." Well, the Torrey
Pines Gulls (TPG) have continuously refined the IHLGF to the point that it runs
like a well-oiled machine. Imagine organizing 90 pilots, 10 rounds and six
flights groups. With three minute intervals between rounds, the IHLGF is a
management marvel. Computerized scoring, pre-printed task and scoring sheets -
including the pilot's name - and great people running the whole shebang. It
doesn't get much better, except that the tasks are varied, challenging and
ordered to make sense for the time of day, e.g., add 'em ups early to warm up
stiff arms, 1,2,3 4 minute flights later in the day when the lift is in,
etc. Then add the world's top pilots to this mix, and you've got yourself one
amazingly fun and challenging contest.
Oh, and the food - free subs for lunch during a short break, and, of course,
Tony's Mexican Restaurant on Friday and Round Table Pizza on Saturday with all
your buds - new and old. If you fly HLG at all, you owe it to yourself to do the
IHLGF at least once."

[RCSE] Tokyo Terror to attend IHLGF

2000-03-23 Thread Ron Scharck

For those of you who attended the IHLGF two years ago, you
will be happy to know that Buzz Tokunaga, "The Tokyo Terror", will be attending
this years IHLGF. Buzz, who is the National HLG Champion of Japan and is
considered to be the Joe Wurts of Japan, e-mailed me yesterday to tell me that
he will definitely will be attending. In his own words, "I can't wait to get
there and see everybody there!"

If you would like to send a welcome note to Buzz, his e-mail
address is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

April 1st is right upon us. It's going to be a full house of
90 again this year so be sure and get your entry forms in on April 1st or as
close after that as possible to reserve a spot at this year's "Poway
Happening."
