RANT warning: AD licensing ingeniousness

2012-05-22 Thread Morten Bartholdy
So I got around to installing Soft 2013 only to find that Autodesk in their
wisdom designed the licensing activation procedure so that I should
activate our Maya and Mudbox 2013 licenses simultaneously to avoid
conflicts, and on top of that the licensing for older versions may break
and need reactivation, so effectively I have to wait until such a time
where nobody will be waiting for licenses and we are not rendering, to do
this.

And I just want to install Soft 2013 and take a look at the goodies.

Hi

I’m not sure I understand, but I’ll assume you have separate serial numbers for
Soft, Maya, and Mudbox.

You can activate all the individual network licenses and download the .lic
files, you don’t have to update the server until you are ready.
Even then you can add just Softimage if that’s what you want. You can add the
others later.

I don’t know how activating separate Maya, Mudbox, and Softimage licenses could
end up in a conflict, unless you have Suite licenses perhaps? Or multiple
serials for each product?

For network licenses, you have to stop the license server, yes.

Also, you can run Softimage 2013 in trial mode for 30 days.

Thanks for clarifying Stephen, but yes my problem is we have network

they would be entirely separate so it was simpler to upgrade one or the
other at any given time.

You know that you can stop the license server even when there are licenses in
use - when you start it again, they just get picked up again, it is easy to
install another license without shutting everyone down.

Softimage and Fedora14 - help please!

2012-05-22 Thread Christoph Muetze

Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded my Softimage Network license to the Maya
Entertainment Creation Suite Premium - mainly for finally being able to
switch over to Linux (i had used mudbox2009 before, which was windows-only).

First let me say: Maya2013 and Mudbox2013 install and work _fine_. On
every (rpm based-)System i tried them on.

(though i wish i didn't have to google up on how to install these
programs (for real). because the documentation provided by autodesk is
really "limited". things like "use tcsh to install" and "you will need
redhat-lsb" are spread all over their site (IF they are there at all and
not buried in some user-forums somewhere else...)

My problem is Softimage2013, the one tool i truly need and can't get to
work under linux. I tried Fedora14, Centos, even unsupported Distros
like Debian. I tried it with different machines, several different
Geforces & Quadros, different Kernelversions and Nvidia drivers
(recommended and unrecommended ones). i have no idea what is wrong.

Here is what happens:

When i install softimage (using tcsh or csh) it installs supposedly
correctly but spits out a "setup did not complete sucessfully" in the end.
A look at the logfile reveals that cmdreg failed to complete the
XSICOMDLLs list (see
http://www.pixelz.de/stuff/softimage2013_fedora_install-log.txt).
So i tried to manually run it with cmdreg -f
"Application/bin/XSICOMDLLs.lst after sourcing .xsi_2013, here is the
result: http://www.pixelz.de/stuff/cmdreg_xsicommdlls-lst.txt <- it
complains it can't load the custom display host (the error warning looks
more like a windows error, though - so i'm not sure how much this
actually reveals..).
Next i ldd'ed the customdisplayhost.so manually to see what happens.
this is the log:
http://www.pixelz.de/stuff/ldd-libcustomdisplayhost-so.txt <- everything
looks fine as far as i can tell..
Starting Softimage shows the splashscreen, the gui is drawn partially
and then the program hangs forever.
Here is the strace (1.3mb, might take a while to load):
http://www.pixelz.de/stuff/strace_soft2013_fed14_hangs_forever_after_splashscreen_appears.txt

The last line is a "futex(0x2cd65b0, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NULL"

This happened with every Softimage version i tried to install and start
so far (2011-2013) on every machine i have (several desktops and two
laptops)

The system i used to do this latest testrun and generated the above
mentioned Logfiles: i7quad, 6gigs ram, Kernel Linux
2.6.35.14-106.fc14_x86_64, Gnome 2.32.0, Geforce GT 330M - nividia
driver 280.13

Any help on how to further investigate or solve this problem is highly
appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

cheers!
Chris

I had the same problem here and this is really something that makes me
puke. If you state that the only supported distro of linux is Fedora14 and
when you first run your setup it returns with an error, then something is
really wrong with your testing on the supported platform. I mean, if you
guys are about to merge every damn aspect of softimage with the autodesk
doctrine, then I would like to see some stuff done on the linux side of
things. What do you think?

thanks steven,

I had the same problem here and this is really something that makes me puke. If
you state that the only supported distro of linux is Fedora14 and when you
first run your setup it returns with an error, then something is really wrong
with your testing on the supported platform. I mean, if you guys are about to
merge every damn aspect of softimage with the autodesk doctrine, then I would
like to see some stuff done on the linux side of things. What do you think?

Here's a recipe for setting up Softimage on CentOS:

Here's a Fedora recipe posted by another user:

Stefan Andersson wrote an install-guide for FC13 (see below) that can
be used for FC14 (newer versions of Flash and NVidia available probably). Most
important is the Nouveau and SeLinux section. I guess you don't need the

Next i ldd'ed the customdispla

Re: Switching geometry emitter

2012-05-22 Thread Andy Moorer
Isn't the array idea essentially similar to using multiple emit nodes? Only
culled down to the heart of the whole thing, multiple generate from sample set?

The per-point attribute/delete scheme has the same 2 problems most
post-generation filtering has. A lot of processing spent creating/deleting
points, and the rate of emission value becomes a step further removed from what
actually gets emitted.

Of the three solutions presented, it seems to me that Vladimir's suggestion
deserves a closer look. Does using the filtering inherent in generate sample
set result in a significant speed savings compared to deletion "on emission"?
Is the rate of emission in this case adjusted, in other words can you use the
rate parameter to specify "n" particles as a result?

Procedural textures on particles

2012-05-22 Thread Andy Moorer
Hey folks, I'm playing around with a simple particle system to which I've
applied a material with a procedural texture (simple noise.)

The result is a bunch of particles textured identically, the space sampled
being local to each particle. In this case I would rather have each particle
"swim" through the spatial noise, their global position used, rather than
local. Is there a way to go about this?

Re: Switching geometry emitter

2012-05-22 Thread Christian Keller
yep, that´s the way i´m doing it. you can use a scalar instead of the
bool and control the individual
emissionrate of each object. quite simple and performance wise not bad
at all !

Which shader are you using for the noise? Things like the fractal_scalar
act that way by default. The other fractal (for eg) doesn't have any way
AFAIK of controlling the texture coordinates for particles.
I'll have a look...

Hanging while drawing the viewports often indicates a problem with the graphic

If you modify the default layout to hide the OpenGL viewports, does Softimage

RE: Softimage and Fedora14 - help please!

2012-05-22 Thread Sandy Sutherland
I built one workstation with Nvidia driver a while ago - otherwise we crank out
render nodes all on FC14 - and all work 100% - I will check tomorrow if we can
remember how we did the one WS, which Nvidia driver etc... - BTW one thing I
HAVE noticed is that you should update BIOS, we had lots of problems before
with nodes untill we did that!

I will see tomorrow if I can dig out which Nvidia driver I used! Evening time
here now and I am at home.

I've had the problem on Fedora14 that softimage would start up after a reboot
but will hang if I open it a second time in the same session. After rebooting
again, it started up again. But then, this was in a virtual machine with no
NVIDIA drivers.

Do you guys have a running setup of a virtual fedora14 with nvidia drivers? if
so, HOW???

RE: Switching geometry emitter

2012-05-22 Thread Grahame Fuller
Here’s another way. Save all the emission parameters as custom attributes. Read
them back and use them to drive an Emit compound. Make a compound out of the
Emit and Get Data nodes, and expose the Geometry (Emitter) input. Plug the
output from the compound into a Select Case, and make another compound of those
two. Expose the Geometry input again, and set its properties to “Multi –
Connect New Ports through New Node (copy values)”. Now you can just plug as
many emitters in as you like, and use the Condition of the Select Case to
switch between them.

yep, that´s the way i´m doing it. you can use a scalar instead of the bool and
control the individual
emissionrate of each object. quite simple and performance wise not bad at all !

I can't recall it exactly, but if it isn't setup correctly you get errors

Re: Softimage and Fedora14 - help please!

2012-05-22 Thread Christoph Muetze

Hi Thomas,

thanks for pointing this out!

i'm painfully aware of the segmentation fault when you don't have the
hostname in /etc/hosts. in my case:

127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4
localhost4.localdomain4) <- segfault
127.0.0.1 localhost wireframe localhost.localdomain localhost4
localhost4.localdomain4 <- soft starts, but freezes after splashscreen

also you need to have /etc/hostname (which doesn't exist by default in
fedora) containing the hostname, but i've forgotten why exactly, some
other error.

i agree that autodesk really should provide a _detailed_ step by step
installation for a program that breaks so easily and is so fragile to
set up like softimage. it feels like an extremely buggy
alphaversion...like.. not tested at all. considering that you have to
collect all the installation information from various places from the
net (inkl. many non-audodesk sites) makes it even worse. and the fact
that the installation medium is an ntfs-formatted usb-stick that _can't_
be openened on the very system that is recommended (fedora14) really is
just the tip of the iceberg.

i wonder why i paid money for this?

:(

cheers!

Re: pointvelocity to drive motion vectors on geometry - does it work?

2012-05-22 Thread peter_b
Just thought I’d get back on this subject – as it’s only a partial solution.

with usermotions you can influence the motion vectors allright, (using
mip_motion_vectors) but it also adds actual blur – which renders the motion
vectors useless.
I’ve tried with and without motion blur in scene and pass options, and tried
adding a motion blur property to disable blur (which is actually necessary for
taking away the incorrect motion vectors – because the usermotion vectors get
added – they dont replace the default vectors)

so overall – I can’t find a way to influence user motion vectors without
causing blur to be drawn.
I hope I’m simply overlooking something?

No worries, I’m looking up the PointVelocity at the surface and saving this
on the particles – and magically the motion vectors are fixed and blend
perfectly with the surface.

Now I have some geometry with incorrect motion vectors (I think) – and I
was hoping to accomplish the same thing:
calculating motion vectors (difference between previous and current frames’
pointposition ?) and saving it as a PointVelocity attribute.

However – it doesnt seem to be working – no matter what I try, the
PointVelocity attribute doesnt seem to affect motion vectors – as it did for
the particles. Has anyone done this? Does it / should it work?

The system can run the program, but XSI's Python environment in Linux

I hoped XSIUtils.LaunchProcess() would do some magic, but no... it gives up

AFX Cameras to XSI

2012-05-22 Thread Marc Brinkley
I know this has come up a few times sorry for more noise.

Anyone have a way to get AfterFX CS6 cameras out to Softimage? We needed to
track some footage in the new CS6 version of AFX and it would be great to
get that info into Softimage.

TIA!

RE: Missing renderer options

2012-05-22 Thread Nicholas Hong
Hi Szabolcs Matefy,

Could you please further elaborate ">From time to time, render options (blue
gradient squares with R)
disappears from the pass lists in explorer, and opening up renderer options
throw an error..."

>From the above statement I gather the following, please include more details
>so we will be able to repro on Softimage.
1. Created passes in the scene with different shaders profiles and passes (e.g.
Glow, matte, ambient.) Which passes where created?
2. Open explorer (8) > Passes
3. Which render options are you referring to?

Thank you

Anyone met with the following issue?

options throw an error...

I need some ideas where to look, what to look, etc.

(though i wish i didn't have to google up on how to install these
programs (for real). because the documentation provided by autodesk is
really "limited". things like "use tcsh to install" and "you will need
redhat-lsb" are spread all over their site (IF they are th
