We've been using SM (now ver. 2.26) for years on two desktop WinXP

we've been using for many years gets the mail sent most of the time;
sometimes, though, it will ask repeatedly, and we have to close the
email we are trying to send and start over.

Any idea why it would be doing that?

(yes, I'm the guy that's also having problems with email sending
timeouts, but I don't know if the problems are related)

They probably are. When your mail server returns error codes the
program will ask you to reconfirm your password.

Check if there are mail problems at your provider.

The latest seamonkey update .. started asking me for my password when i
try to send e-mail... No settings have changed since Netscape Version 1

 This is a seamonkey problem.

I think you misunderstood the issue.

The problem is not that a few computers belonging to Facebook engineers
got hacked; the problem is that this event demonstrates that:

a) There is a bug in Java
b) Which is ALREADY BEING EXPLOITED by hackers.

If this exploit only affected Facebook, there would be no reason for
worry. But the thing is, it DOES present a risk for EVERY user.
Facebook
can take care of itself, but most small users CANNOT. It's to protect
those small users that the block has been implemented. So, for the
moment, it's considered dangerous to have Java running automatically.

Even if the latest exploit has been band-aided, the recent pattern of
security problems with Java raises serious doubts about its overall
security. Simply stated, Java is no longer worth the trust of Internet
users -- until such a time as it can regain that trust, Mozilla
opted to
place it in the click-to-run category, which needs an explicit OK
from the user every time it is invoked by a site.

Staying with an older Java release won't help; if anything, it will be
worse, since those older releases are bound to be even more
emphatically
blocked.

You raise a point I'd appreciate clarification on: explicit OK from the
user. The problem several of us have is that, when visiting a site
which uses Java, we are not ASKED if it's OK to run Java, the site
simply fails. Despite continually un- and re-installing Java to allow
for 'clean' installs, certificate updates, etc., we're not being
prompted to click a permissions dialog, we're simply A) told by the web
site that we don't have Java running, or B) nothing happens at all.

The current state of the Java 7u15 plugin states this plugin is known to
have vulnerabilities, but nothing actually says it's blocked (at least
on my machine at the mo.) In fact, the 'disable' button is available if
I want to turn it off, which infers it's still running. But the Pogo
web site now looks for Java before allowing a Java-based game to run,
and it tells me I haven't got Java installed.

And that's contradictory, based on the observed interface.

When you go to a Web page that uses Java but the blocklist prevents Java
from running, you should see an icon at the left end of the URI bar
(address bar). The icon resembles a small Lego block. Click on that
icon to get a pull-down menu to override the blocklist for that Web
page. No, this is NOT intuitive and definitely NOT user-oriented. And
no, I know of no way to undo the override.

Why was it blocked?
Old versions of the Java plugin are potentially insecure and
unstable. All users are strongly recommended to update on our plugin
check page.
Who is affected?
All users who have these versions of the plugin installed in
Firefox.
What does this mean?

The problematic add-on or plugin will be automatically disabled
and
no longer usable.
When Mozilla becomes aware of add-ons, plugins, or other
third-party software that seriously compromises SeaMonkey security,
stability, or performance and meets certain criteria, the software may
be blocked from general use. For more information, please read this

V.7 update 15 is working for me on one site, but not on another (running
SM 2.15.2, Win7). Recently it was working everywhere. And before that
the same spotty results as today with the same sites working and not
working.

Frankly, using java in SeaMonkey has become an exercise in masochism,
and I've stopped trying.

On Pogo.com Some Games that use Java Work fine, Then other games that is
use Java tells me I need to install JAVA .

In seamonkey Ad on manager it Tells Me that Java 7 u 15 IS KNOWN TO
BE VULnurable .. But it is not Disabled ..

In java Consul Mozilla will not Stay Checked .

Same thing here: SM2.16, Java v7u15: At Pogo game site, Java-based games
say that Java isn't installed, and SM Add-On Mgr shows Java warning
about 'MAY BE VULNERABLE', but does not indicate an absolute block.

There's a functino called a Blocklist running in the background in SM.
The programmers write a listing of versions of assorted 3rd-party
software (Java, Adobe Flash, whatever) that have known issues, either
with security and/or SM stability, so that Blocklist listing doc
contains settings to block SM's use of those applications. A new
Blocklist file is downloaded automatically on a regular basis, assuming
SM is open, so when apps change, the list can be changed and passed on
without you having to remember to go looking. You can bypass that if
you want, BUT YOU ACCEPT THE CONSEQUENCES IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG.

In the Browser, type 'about:config' in the address bar. A listing of
all the settings will appear in the browser window. In the search bar,
type 'bocklist', and the list will shorten to include only those
perferences which have that name in them. The one you want is
'extensions.blocklist.enabled'. The value can only be True of False.
When it's True, the blocklist stops things. To change from True to
False, simply double-click the preference name. The value will change
to False, and the entire line will go to BOLD text, to show that it's
not at its default value. Your Pogo games should all work now. THIS
OPENS YOU UP TO ANY OTHER SITE USING JAVA IN A MALICIOUS MANNER,
regardless of Pogo's use of Java.

Java is Blocked again today

2013-02-27 Thread question

Se 7 u15 seamonkey 2.16

worked this morning ..

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/blocked/p294

Why was it blocked?
Old versions of the Java plugin are potentially insecure and
unstable. All users are strongly recommended to update on our plugin
check page.

Who is affected?
All users who have these versions of the plugin installed in Firefox.
What does this mean?

The problematic add-on or plugin will be automatically disabled and
no longer usable.
When Mozilla becomes aware of add-ons, plugins, or other
third-party software that seriously compromises SeaMonkey security,
stability, or performance and meets certain criteria, the software may

I have just tested it in several different browsers. All of them asked
for user confirmation to run the applet, although sometimes with a
different UI -- SM opened a popup, SRWare Iron gave me one of those
yellow bars on top. Opera and IE gave me a popup IDENTICAL to the one
from Seamonkey.

It seems to me that the request for confirmation (and the popup, if it's
not being hidden by Chromium/Iron) is coming from Java itself, not the
browser. I didn't follow all the technical bulletins, but it would make
sense for Oracle to tighten up the security model after the recent
high-profile security problems. So, now Java requires manual
confirmation in situations where in the past it would run the applet
raising no questions. From the Pogo news bulletin that the OP linked to,
the solution seems to be for the website to renew/upgrade the Java
digital certificates -- an applet digitally signed according to the new
rules will run without popups.

where I would expect the same problem of not being able to launch
java to occur, works OK, so it appears that the above problem may be
site-related.

The newest version of Java .. raises the secrity lever Bat to HIGH
because of Kackers taking control... It checks for Security
Certificates at the web sites. If there expired or have none , it
will not function.. Click Java in control panel and lower the
security bar to Medium. But download the newest java from Java.com ..
They
also explain this
to you .

Here's a question, question. Why don't I have this problem in Firefox 18,
which is the equivalent level browser to Seamonkey 15, and which I've
configured the same way? Anyway, thanks for the tip.

I can't get 7u11 to work in Firefox, SeaMonkey or Chrome, works okay in IE.

I've seen the notices and recommendations about the various Java
security holes. I understand the concerns. But there's one site my
wife visits regularly which requires Java, and now won't work on either
our XP-SP3 tower mainframe or a Win7 laptop, both with SM 2.15, because
SM has taken it upon itself to block every Java version back thru v6
Update 38. The only option available to the user is to disable it in
Add-On Mgr, which is useless since SM has already locked it out.

This is the only site she wants to use which uses Java, so I'd
appreciate any recommendations as to how to turn SOME version of Java
back on in SM.

Java 7u11 is NOT blocked for SeaMonkey 2.15 under Windows XP.

Begging your pardon, Mr Ross, but if Java weren't blocked, I wouldn't
have posted the message in the first place. In point of fact, the
plug-in is blocked, and the option to ENABLE it is not visible in the
Add-Ons Mgr screen. The only button visible is 'Disable', which is what
I described to begin with.

I can begin to understand the current version of SM blocking Java due
it's zero-day vulnerability, but if I am supposed to have the option to
turn it back on, I have no idea how to do that because I can't see or
find an option anywhere to re-enable it. And Mr Gordon is accessing the
same site as my wife, Pogo.com. So he's seeing the same thing we are.
And SM is preventing the site from using Java in any version state.

I'm not as prepared to 'jump ship' as Mr Gordon puts it, but either I
have a fault which prevents me from seeing a re-enable option (help!?),
or someone has programmed this to take the choice away from me. Either
way, I can't there from here.

I don't want to give up SM: I've seen Firefox and I prefer the suite
verion I use now (and have been using for many years). And I detest the
MS product. It's bad enough I have to put up with it at work, I don't
want to deal with it at home as well. (I'm an IT system/network admin,
but not a programmer.)

Okay. I'll rephrase my comment.

Configuration:
Windows XP SP3
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:18.0) Gecko/20100101 SeaMonkey/2.15
Java J2SE RTE 7 update 11

For me, I can still use Java. I get a gray box with a Lego block and
the caption: Click here to activate plugin. I click (once, not
double-click) on the caption, and Java is working.

Just download the NEW java from http://www.java.com

All it does is raise the Security level bar from Medium to HIGH ,,

A new Trojan horse called Mal/JavaJar-B has been found that exploits a
vulnerability in Oracle's Java 7 and affects even the latest version of
the runtime (7u10).

The exploit has been described by Sophos as a zero-day attack since it
has been found being actively used in malware before developers have had
a chance to investigate and patch it. The exploit is currently under
review at the National Vulnerability Database and has been given an ID
number CVE-2013-0422, where it is still described as relatively unknown:

Unspecified vulnerability in Oracle Java 7 Update 10 and earlier allows
remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via unknown vectors, possibly
related to permissions of certain Java classes, as exploited in the
wild in January 2013, and as demonstrated by Blackhole and Nuclear Pack.

U.S. tells computer users to disable Java software

Updated 9:00 p.m. ET

WASHINGTON The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is advising people
to temporarily disable the Java software on their computers to avoid
potential hacking attacks.

The recommendation came in an advisory issued late Thursday, following
up on concerns raised by computer security experts.

Read the US-CERT release concerning Java

Experts believe hackers have found a flaw in Java's coding that creates
an opening for criminal activity and other high-tech mischief.

CNET's Topher Kessler writes:

The malware has currently been seen attacking Windows, Linux and
Unix systems, and while so far has not focused on OS X, may be able to
do so given OS X is largely similar to Unix and Java is cross-platform.

Even though the exploit has not been seen in OS X, Apple has taken
steps to block it by issuing an update to its built-in XProtect system
to block the current version of the Java 7 runtime and require users
install an as of yet unreleased version of the Java runtime.

Luckily with the latest versions of Java, users who need to keep it
active can change a couple of settings to help secure their systems. Go
to the Java Control Panel that is installed along with the runtime, and
in the Security section uncheck the option to Enable Java content in
the browser, which will disable the browser plug-in. This will prevent
the inadvertent execution of exploits that may be stumbled upon when
browsing the Web, and is a recommended setting for most people to do. If
you need to see a Java applet on the Web, then you can always
temporarily re-enable the plug-in.

The second setting is to increase the security level of the Java
runtime, which can also be done in the same Security section of the Java
Control Panel. The default security level is Medium, but you can
increase this to High or Very High. At the High level, Java will prompt
you for approval before running any unsigned Java code, and at the Very
High level all Java code will require such approval, regardless of
whether or not it is signed.

Java is a widely used technical language that allows computer
programmers to write a wide variety of Internet applications and other
software programs that can run on just about any computer's operating
system.

Oracle Corp. bought Java as part of a $7.3 billion acquisition of the
software's creator, Sun Microsystems, in 2010.

Oracle, which is based in Redwood Shores, Calif., had no immediate
comment late Friday.

I have ATT using Yahoo as a mail provider and don't have any problems
with sending or receiving email regardless of text or HTML format. I use
the latest SeaMonkey.

There is only one issue with Yahoo which affects my email that might be
an issue for others. I need to use the correct security format, SSL. It
gets more complicated since I also use Avast to scan email.

SeaMonkey
pop.att.yahoo.com, port 110
security none
smtp.att.yahoo.com, port 25
security none

Avast
yahoo.com POP3 port 995 SSL
yahoo.com SMTP port 465 SSL
As of this morning The Smtp Server is functioning with HTML ... I think
Yahoo Got it Fixed .

Re: Problem with email

2012-03-10 Thread question

Lisa Wiser wrote:

I've been using my Seamonkey email almost exclusively. Friday morning, it
worked fine. Friday night I started getting errors. My Email account itself
seems fine. I can receive. I can send through that email account using my
smartphone. I get an error message when sending through Seamonkey. Nothing was
changed between the sessions.

I checked with my provider (ATT -- I kept my dial up account but access through
Att DSL), tried a few things and nothing worked. I did send several test mails and
although all produced an error message, at least one got through.

In putting my account back after the help from ATT, now my outgoing is not
accepting my password, although I have verified I'm using the proper one.

It appears since I can send mail through many sources outside SeaMonkey, has
something changed there?

How does one get the latest Flash Player for Seamonkey? They've

I changed the setting to bypass Compatibility checking so it
installs...
but it won't RUN because it says you're not running Firefox!!

They USED to have a web link where you could get the Windows
Installer
file directly, but that link has disappeared. How the *^# are we
supposed to get the latest fixes if those JACKASSES take away the
SIMPLEST way of installing... you know... the way that actually
WORKED???

Don't get me going about the morons at Adobe. I got the installer from
here:

http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player.exe

THANK YOU! How did you find that link?

You're welcome!

When the install failed from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
there was a place to click to troubleshoot the problem and then there
was a place to download the installer. It seems as though the problem is
Adobe now wants to use the Adobe Download Manager and SM2 doesn't like
the installer?

And why would SeaMonkey even care about the installer? Flash can be
installed by itself without any participation by SeaMonkey. SeaMonkey
will then find it.

All I can tell you is it didn't work from the link. My bad, it seems as
though SM2 had a problem with the Adobe Download Manager.

No big deal, I've figured out how to update Flashplayer and control it
so I'm done. 8-)

My flash player's Audio quit working today . No audio from any site that
uses Flash player 10

Certificate Is not trusted because the issuer is not Trusted

( error code:sec_error_untrustered issuer)

akamai suborinate Ca 3

akamai technologies inc

The Certificat expires 12 /31/ 2010

This sounds very much the same as the problem that I had with the
Federal Trade Commission site. See the thread Bad Certificate
started
yesterday in this same newsgroup.

I have submitted bug report #548380 to provide a better user interface
for dealing with this situation. See
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=548380. At the end of
that report, I describe my workaround, which requires a separate
profile.

I now know it is a seamonkey problem.. IE access the site with no
problems

Seamonkey 1.1.18 Gives the same error Jusy ONE time and then lets me
into the site.

Paypal support sent me the link to Verisign to renewel the
Certificate .
I ran the install Then went to preference / Security/certificates

Verisign has nothing to do with the site. Akamai technology is the
certificate issuer for Paypal Per Seamonkey .

I use win 7 pro , my wife uses winxp...
I just tried paypal with her computer and seamonkey 2.03. NO
CERTIFICATE errors.

I concede that the problem lies in my computer and Not a pay pal com
problem

Forgot to mention. paypal page comes up in TEXT form ( no Graphics)
The newest version of Firefox gives the same errors

Are you uptodate on Win xp updates? I thought I saw one regarding
certificate validation or some such (those are just a blur).

As stated I am using Windows 7 Pro

2010-02-24 Thread question

to Verisign to update the Certificate .. Suposivly did it But Still ger
lots od Certificate Errors.

Pay pal support Now says MY certificate is no good
I look in certificates and I HAVE NONE .

I am using seamonkey 2.03 win 7 pro Pay pal support says to go to
microsoft web site and get a New ROOT certificate . My Question is How?
When I use control panel to check For updates It only tells me that I am

No issues with UN and PW saved for accounts like bugzilla, launchpad,
openoffice.org, etc. Is there something about Facebook that is
special? Note: it's not browser sniffing that I can tell; also tried
spoofing w/Fx.

your url is wrong

http://www.facebook.com

Useing 2.02 Win 7 As I bring up the page the login box is already
filled in... The password was not. All I had to do was Click ONCE on the
password box and it filled in auto matically

page, there is no autofill for

username (actually email address) and password.

Yeah. Sorry about that.

I don't even get the login box fillin. All I get is 'email' and then
'password' in the password box. Checked in the password manager and I
definitely show the username and password as saved for
http://www.facebook.com. I'll try on Win7 later today. Thanks for checking.

Gecko/20100123 Lightning/1.0b1 SeaMonkey/2.0.3pre

Ah... just noticed that if I click in the username box and type the
first letter of the username I get a dropdown with the username. Click
that and click on the password box the password gets autofilled. This
is different than my logins to the other site accounts that I mentions,
but now that I know the 'secret' :-) mystery solved. Thanks again for
checking.

If no boxes are auto filled ... Always click USER or login Box

if user is filled in Click password box and it will auto fill.

Looks like a problem with a.m.o. rather than with the theme. Did you try
installing anything else?

On the 4th try it installed .
