Way I've always seen it abbreviated. Is FF

They are all Pronounced as Two words,
Fire-Fox
Sea-Monkey
Thunder-Bird
So I've always abbreviated them as: SM, FF, TB. And If you look on
Google You find a lot more people Abbreviating it FF, SM, and TB. I the
first time I've ever seen a reference to Fx is in NoOP's post above.

You pronounce all three as though they are two words so its logical to
abbreviate using first letter of each part.

Fx could easily mean Fix, or Fax, or Fox. Plus there use to be a piece

continue what everyone thinks is correct FF.

Here is a filter to mark posts as read from a particularly problematic user.

Name of filter is his email address.

Apply filter when, Checking Mail or Manually run is selected.

Match all the following is selected.

From is(email address) all selecetd an filled in.

Perform this action, Mark as Read is selected.

The filter performs exactly as advertised.

I have numerous other filters that also behave as intended.

whose posts I do not wish to read.

I have now set a couple of tests on 2 people in different newsgroups to
mark as read their posts, to see how SM behaves. Will come back when
I see the results. [I have the log set to record the filters on one
group... the other group is too large.]

Any chance you would just give us the newsgroup in which this individual
posts, so that we could try the *exact* filters you are attempting?

That is not true. I'm using SM 1.1.16 at the moment, but I've been using

I don't know what he was told or misunderstood, but I'm using 2.02 now,

SM lacked the ability to filter cross-postings for a long awhile, but we
even have that feature now.
There is something lacking in communication here it seems.

I never could get filtering working in SM 1.1.8. I kept trying as I
upgraded from version to version. I realize you can only set to mark as
read (if you don't download for reading later). Never did get working. I
haven't tried in 2.0 SM as I haven't had the need.

I wanted to test some *individuals* as he is trying to do, and I've just
gotten the results, when reading that newsgroup a few minutes ago. The
individual's name used in one group posted 4 messages since I set up my
filter to mark her messages read.

They did not show, because I have my groups set to show ONLY UNREAD. So
I switched to show ALL, and there they were marked READ... just as
my message filter log said they were. :)

I thought that might help Ray communicate what is different for him.

contains means the object includes the text you provided somewhere within it.
For example, if you use: contains foo, it will match:

  foo
  foo
This is a long line with foo in it

If instead you use is (rather than contains) then it must match
exactly. is foo would only match the first example line above.

Try the following: unless there are others at lion.org you wish to read

instead of everything just use
@lion.org
@Lion.org

And I've just reread you post as I am replying.

To my knowledge Filters have never worked on newsgroups all the way back
to communicator days whenever Filtering first Started. (at least I never
was able to get filters to work on newsgroups.

Also make sure the filter is set for the newsgroup not the inbox of your
email address.

Another thing to try just in case if they do work on newsgroups is to
try if there is a reply-to address to have it use reply to instead.

Same here. The only problem I've ever had is for the file to get
corrupted and have to be rebuilt. I thought it was because I had too
many filters on one newsgroup, but I was assured that there was no limit
on message filters. Still not sure about that though. ;)

Otherwise, newsgroup filters have worked great for me!
