I think that is some of your finest work, Chris. Amazing, and disturbing.
Thankfully, fakes are pretty easy to spot, and more importantly the cost of
producing a passable fake outweighs the cost people will trade for it on
ebay. (I'm guessing it would take at least $150 to produce something truly
worth pirating.)

Friggin' abandonware amateurs... I wish I never had anything to do with
starting that whole movement.

That was an original one, yes. I confirmed this by talking to the winner
of the auction. Here's a larger picture:

That's some honest wear and tear a faker should find quite impossible to
imitate.

This picture was actually what got me suspicious in the first place, Eyal
sending me the same image for the proposed trade that he used for the
auction.

Yeah, I'd say it's rare you'd find someone with access to the equipment
needed to do this as well as Eyal did, and the buyers spotted those right
away once they actually held them. Folders would be the easiest pieces to
clone, since there are only two sides (inside and out), no pages, no
manuals... I don't think we'll see a fake saucer anytime soon.

I've got some expert testimony from a collector in the printing / graphic
design business that didn't quite make the column deadline, but I'll post it
in the next. Had at least four other topics to discuss, but decided getting
the word out on this was more important.

Given the efforts that people go through to fake wear and tear on art

Incidentally, I didn't save this particular auction right after it had
ended. I only did so when Eyal approached me about the Ultima 1 trade,
roughly 7 weeks after the auction had ended. And just in time, it was gone
from eBay's database shortly after.

Sounds like a great idea...go for it! Be sure to include numerical data on
desirable items: times sold on ebay (rarity), average sale price, etc. Of
course, this would require a human eye to get it right. That would be a
really useful site.

[SWCollect] [ SWCollect ] What's your favorite find?

2002-11-09 Thread John Romero
Figured I'd switch topics here since it had to happen sooner or later!

What's your favorite old software find that you have?

I have a *bunch* of old ziploc baggie games from the early days, but I'd
have to say that my favorite ones are:

(1) Pristine, perfect complete collection of Softalk magazine
(1980-1984)
(2) Akalabeth (the one with the orange castle)
(3) Master Disks for a few of Nasir Gebelli's games: Horizon V, Eggs-It,
Neptune.
(4) Signed copy of Phantom's Five (Nasir)
(5) Perfect box copy of Ultima II
(6) Signed copy of Cyber Strike (Nasir)
(7) Signed copy of Both Barrels (Nasir)

And a major undertaking. I did something like this for a while for
two of my pages (http://home.hiwaay.net/~lkseitz/cvg/PacmanFever/ and
http://home.hiwaay.net/~lkseitz/comics/Rom/actionfig/where.shtml, if
you must now). It's no big deal for a few items that you're regularly
searching for anyway. I can't imagine trying to do it on a major
scale, though.

All I did for my pages was create Excel spreadsheets for date, auction
number, winning bid, and notes. I used the notes to record details on
unusual auctions (like shrinkwrapped/new items or what was missing
from an incomplete auction figure), but didn't make any exceptions for
those in calculating averages and such. (I figured they'd, well,
average out.) It's often very hard to accuarately judge condition of
items from an auction listing, even if it has photos.

A more automated method might be to use a scripting language to do the
search, record the details in a database, then have a human delete
inappropriate matches. That would guarantee only the most poorly-listed
items would be overlooked. You'd have to search about 3 times a week to
ensure no 3-day auctions would be overlooked.

Since John listed 7, so will I...

1. Shrinked PC re-release from SoftSmith, of Sentient Software's "Cyborg"
by Michael Berlyn. Currently the only known PC copy in existence (unless
you've got one and haven't come forward yet).

2. Softporn by Sierra. Gotta love Roberta in a hot tub. B-)

3. Adventure in Serenia, Sierra's PC version of Wizard and the Princess.

4. Signed photo of Douglas Adams and Steve Meretzky, from their days at
Infocom. (Okay, technically that's not software, but it's related.)

5. Myth by Magnetic Scrolls. Given away to members of the Official Secrets
adventurers' club, in Europe. Never available to U.S. players.

6. and 7. Scott Adams Limited Gold Edition collectors' cases (both disk and
cassette versions), only 1000 made.

My favorite find was a big box Ultima II. I found it at a used
bookstore that was starting to resell old computer software. I was
startled to see a number of Apple ][ Ultimas there. As I looked
through the stacks there it was. I couldn't believe my luck when I saw
the price tag of $4. Yes, four dollars. When I opened it, though, I
realized that I had made the mythical killer find. You see, there were
two cloth maps, two sets of disks, two manuals (one being a first
edition!)... I had one box with double the fun. :-D

Another favorite find was Odyssey: The Compleat Apventure by Robert
Clardy (Synergestic Software). I remember the hours and hours I used
to play this game in college. Finding a mint copy was a fun bit of
nostalgia. Even better I found I still enjoy the game today.

Ultima: Escape from Mt. Drash is one simply because it took me three
years to find a copy. Before I found my copy several people had
claimed to own a copy, but when asked to share some information about
the game they had numerous excuses why they couldn't share (my favorite
being the one where the person claimed their Drash cartridge (!) was
cracked).

I remember this one, this was a GREAT game! It's in four parts, right?
First you fight monsters, trade, and acquire enough money to build a ship
and leave the island, then you have to navigate the ocean, find a magic
artifact in some catacombs (my memory here's a bit fuzzy) and then use it to
storm the bad guy's fortress. My cousin and I used to play it on his IIe.
The only thing was, he'd gotten a pirate copy so a lot of the text had been
hacked to display dirty words.

IIRC, there was also a sequel, "Apventure to Atlantis" I think.

I have a copy of Adventure in Serenia as well.  Paid top dollar for it;
it's always going to be the centerpiece of my collection, seeing how it's
the first game (out of, oh, many hundred) I ever finished. (I restrict my
collecting to PC games only, so this is about as rare as it gets -- no
Akalabeth for me.)

I also managed to lift a big-box IBM Ultima II off eBay for $25, heh.
It's not in great shape, though; maybe I'll get around to finding a box in
better condition some day.

Just to introduce myself to Mr. Romero and whoever else might be new,
I'm not really much of a software collector. I find the topic quite
interesting, but my personal passion is old video games (e.g. Atari
2600). Once MobyGames started up, though, I couldn't seem to help but
wanting to buy old computer software when I found it. Before that, I
might pick up an Infocom game if I saw one, but that was about it.

At the moment, being unemployed and in need of money, I'm finally
getting ready to sell many items. Some I'd never intended to keep and
just hadn't gotten around to selling. Others I thought I might keep
but current circumstances dictate they must go.

One of these is a copy of Star Saga: One for the Apple II. All the
materials inside are unused and the manuals are shrinkwrapped. I
don't recall hearing about it until I found it, but I thought it was
cool finding it in that condition. I have no sentimental attachment
to it, however, and have decided to see what it will fetch on eBay.

As owner and, sadly, non-updater of the Classic Video Games Literature
List (http://fly.hiwaay.net/~lkseitz/cvg/cvglit.shtml), I would love
to see such a database (or even better, one for video games), too. My
list only covers industry-specific periodicals and books, not general
periodicals that contained articles on topic. However, I think the
software behind MobyGames could be converted to do either (or both).

Most modifications are obvious. Instead of box scans, we have cover
scans. Authors and editors instead of programmers. And so on. The
cool part would be if we could create a subject database so you could
quickly find articles related, for example, Infocom, Sid Meier, etc.
The tough part would be selecting the article/book topics. You
probably wouldn't want to give the user a complete list of every game,
author, publisher, etc. to choose from. I suppose the MobyGames way
of doing publisher and developer companies might work. (Let users
type it in and present them with the matches, if there's more than
one.)

I'd love to do something like this, particularly if it included old
video game platforms, but I simply don't have the time for something
like this right now.

[SWCollect] MobyScale question

2002-11-09 Thread Lee K. Seitz
Jim and anyone else that wants to chime in,

Please make sure I'm using the MobyScale right. I have a copy of
Ultima IV where the Book of Magic has been written in. Spell
components were underlined (in pen) and many pages have a series of
letters written at the top (e.g. "A, D, E"). The last three pages,
which should be blank, have been written in a great deal. Does this
make this book ED?

Another question: should disks and sleeves be graded together or
separately. This same package has the original disks with wear, but
they're not in the original sleeves. Should I list them as "Disks:
G/MMC"? (I'd probably put a note after that explaining the rating.)

Also, is there not an official page for the MobyScale at
MobyGames.com? I can't find one and Google returns the ones at YOIS
and GOTCHA.

RE: [SWCollect] MobyScale question

2002-11-09 Thread Hugh Falk
I would say that yes; the book is ED. However, if you're using the
abbreviated form and grading the entire contents of the game with one grade,
I would not list the entire contents as ED. If everything else was F (for
example), it might bring down the contents to VG or G (it's subjective, of
course).

I only grade contents as a whole, so I don't get into grading disks
separately from sleeves, but I would certainly mention the sleeves as
missing in the notes and would use MMC for the box contents. Since you're
already going a step further and detailing out specific contents, I'd say
it's up to you to decide what to apply the scale to. As long as it isn't
misleading, do what you want.

RE: [SWCollect] [ SWCollect ] What's your favorite find?

2002-11-09 Thread Hugh Falk
Wow, there are so many...maybe too many. However, the ones that stick out
in my mind aren't necessarily the best or rarest games I have, it's the best
deals I found. So I'll just name the ones I got for free (the deal can't
get any better than that):

Akalabeth
Starcross (Saucer Package)
Suspended (Mask Box)
Infocom folios -- Deadline, Suspended, Seastalker, Infidel, Planetfall,
Enchanter, etc.
Ultima
Ultima II small box
Ultima II big box
Sierra folios -- Ulysses, Mystery House, Wizard and Princess, Time Zone,
etc.
I'll stop there...literally hundreds more.

How did I get all these for free? On eBay, believe it or not, and they
weren't free...initially . They came in large lots of stuff (usually with a
ton of hardware). The games weren't even mentioned in the lots (so a search
wouldn't find them). However, they were in the pictures, and I was lucky to
spot them. I won the lots and kept the games. I sold the stuff I didn't
want back on eBay (splitting up the items and with better advertising) and
made more than I paid for the original lots. So the games actually made me
money. I don't know if it's because I have less time or if these deals
aren't around any more, but I haven't scored one in quite a while. I really
miss the old days of ebay (5 years ago! :-)

I'm also proud of my complete collection of EA flat box games...not that
they're rare or expensive. I just haven't seen another complete
set...anybody on this list collect EA flats?

Figured I'd switch topics here since it had to happen sooner or later!

What's your favorite old software find that you have?

I have a *bunch* of old ziploc baggie games from the early days, but I'd
have to say that my favorite ones are:

(1) Pristine, perfect complete collection of Softalk magazine
(1980-1984)
(2) Akalabeth (the one with the orange castle)
(3) Master Disks for a few of Nasir Gebelli's games: Horizon V, Eggs-It,
Neptune.
(4) Signed copy of Phantom's Five (Nasir)
(5) Perfect box copy of Ultima II
(6) Signed copy of Cyber Strike (Nasir)
(7) Signed copy of Both Barrels (Nasir)
