t-and-f: Re: Oregon's Pepsi Invite
Let me correct you on one point. Bill Bowerman did not build Hayward. In fact, it went up in 1904 when Bill Hayward was the coach. Scott
t-and-f: SEC Day 3
What a meet! I seem to say this each year, but Good Lord, what a meet. Spearmon 20.35 again, Carter 20.36, Clement 20.40. 20.40 was the SEC meet record until yesterday and it is only good enough for 3rd. Then Clement 45.29. Fana Ashby 7.21 Hazel-Ann Regis 23.02, Tiandra Ponteen 51.47, then Nicole Cook 2:00.75 for a new CR, 2nd denton 2:01.96, new Jamaican NR, Sigmont over Novak in the mile in a great race and Candace Scott 79- 5.25 in the weight. Simply a great meet with Arkansas winning the men and Tennessee the women. Scott
t-and-f: SEC Day 2
I know all about the crowing going on in Boston but.today Spearmon 20.35 in the heats, Tianna Madison 22- 0 1/4!!! in the LJ, Maurice Smith 6035 in the Hept (#2 AT College) among other things. Tomorrow will be an absolute hoot. Has the markings of the one of the great SEC meets of all time. Stay tuned. Scott

Hi, gang. I had a few problems at work today and did not get back home 'till about an hour ago. So, I have not yet sifted through the totality of e-mails regarding the books. However, the good news!! I will be working on this all from my house tomorrow and will e-mail each of you personally. Thanks for your support. Also, no takers yet on the Leichtathletik magazines? Truly a one-time-only chance. You guys are missing the boat on this one. Someone needs to make a fair offer; that's all. They could be yours! Or, if you want me to quote a price, I will do so. Scott

t-and-f: Potts Library VIII - 4th Try
Well, gang, now that the US season is pretty much over, I can devote some more time to this huge accumulation of material. Here is a list of many one-of-a-kind books from Don's material that I can now make available. Obviously, this has to be first-come-first served. There will be more of this type of material, but I wanted to get something out there for interested parties. I can't take the time to answer particular questions about a particular item. I have tried to grade the books fairly and price them accordingly. Many of these books are quite scarce. Remember, all this money is going to Don's family. Checks should be made made payable to me at the regular address 4432 Snowbird Circle, Cerritos, CA. 90703. The attachment is in Word 7.0. Cost includes surface mail. Add 3.00 per book if you want priority mail. Many thanks and watch soon for the Leichtathletik posting, Potts/Davis Library IX. t-and-f: Davis Medical Update
Well, gang, I survided yet another PET scan. After being injected this time with 18-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG), I was imaged for 3 hours. No signs of any recurrence. No test again now for another 11 months. I am 55 months out now and seemingly doing well. You think being a mathematician with all the terminology if fun, here is one statement from my report: The interhemispheric fissure is of normal size, as are the intercaudate and interthalmic intervals. I was obviously glad to hear that! Thanks to all of you who have asked about my health over the years and particularly this year, as I have travelled much and seen many of you at the meets. I am quite happy to have friends like you, even if we do argue sometimes about how to convert a metric mark or the direction of the wind!! Scott Davis
Re: t-and-f: 9.85w by Fredericks
Actually, with all due respect to those involved, the first person to actually understand this problem was Don Potts back in 1955. I well remember discussing these matters with Don as a grad student back in 1969. He actually had a table which included the rudimentary efforts at combining wind and altitude. In those days, there were very few of us who cared or understood the physics of the problem. Don was simply too modest to publish most of this material but I have it all as a result of the acquisition of his library. Scott Davis
t-and-f: NCAA and FAST Annuals
I am leaving in a couple of hours for Baton Rouge and the NCAA meet. I will not service any book orders until next Monday. Thanks for your patience. Scott Davis
Re: t-and-f: decent day for Gatlin (so far)
But the book is a USATF publication and they pass judgement on all contents. Scott
Re: t-and-f: decent day for Gatlin (so far)
Not a CR if you use the USATF/FAST records--only #4 on AT College List. Scott
t-and-f: 2002 US ANNUAL
Well, gang, the 2002 FAST Annual combined once again with the USATF Media Guide is now available from yours truly. I thought I would pass this on since there has been discussion on the list regarding All-Time lists. The book has AT lists at least 50 deep for each event, the 2001 50-deep year lists, AT college and junior lists, 2001 junior lists, walk lists, and the huge index which is back to including resident foreigners this year. The USA portion of the book contains great bio material, a recap of the 2002 indoor season, standards, media contacts, past national champs, many great photos, etc. 630 pages!! Superior paper quality this year so that the book, even though with a greater page count than last year, is about 1/2 inch thinner than the 2001 book. Edited by Jill Geer for the USA portion and yours truly for the FAST section. A really good book. Paid up FAST members will be receiving their copy within the next couple of weeks. I am travelling to SEC this weekend and then the Big 10 but I will try to get all orders out at once. Cost is 20.00 regular post, 24 by priority mail and 32.00 air post to Europe. Get 'em now before the postal increase goes into effect!! As always, checks payable to me and sent to 4432 Snowbird Circle, Cerritos, California 90703. Many thanks, Scott Davis

Re: t-and-f: Kathy Jager at Mt. SAC: The Epilogue
With all due respect, Ken, Kathy Jager is not your basic household name in track and field. I would have probably butchered the pronunciation as well. And if you not familiar with the geography, La Canada is possibly going to get messed up as well. The bottom is this; Mt. SAC has done a hell of a lot a good work for the Master's folks and we will continue to do so. I do not appreciate one bit you taking us to task because we mispronounce a name and perhaps forget a medal here or there. I bent over backwards for you this year as far credentials not only for you BUT FOR your friend as well. If this is what I can expect in the way of coverage in the future, you are no longer welcome and I am real serious about that. Scott Davis - Director
t-and-f: Webb at Mt. SAC
To answer all of the mail I am getting, let me just say that Alan Webb will run on Sat night at SAC in a very hot college race. I will detail it later; no time right now. His coach asked specifically for this race which, of course, I was happy to accommodate. It should be quite good. Most of the Michigan squad is coming, as they normally do. Please, no more e-mailsI can't answer them all right now. Thanks for your understanding. Scott
t-and-f: Library Material
I have been asked by Louise Tricard to post the following message. Louise now has all of the duplicates from the Butler library collection which was shipped to the AAF in Los Angeles. After they went through the collection, they simply shipped her all of the duplicates. She had made arrangements for this earlier. She is not a list member but can be contaced directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for complete details of the material for sale. Thanks. Also, I will be sending out details of the Potts library material for sale once the Relays are over. Quite busy right now; there will be some amazing items for sale in the near future! Scott Davis
Re: t-and-f: SEC Champs and regional qualifying
But, Ed, where is the money to send these athletes to the Relay meets going to come from with regionals? See my last post Scott
Re: t-and-f: SEC Champs and regional qualifying
Rich, What you guys fail to understand is the following In regards to Mt SAC, I have spent countless hours recruiting major colleges from across the US to come to Walnut With regionals, there is absolutely no incentive for them to come Moreover, if conference meets back up to the last weekend in April, which many would, that would sort of preclude people from competing at Penn at Drake How much clearer do we have to make it?? Why don't you see that?? In a time of decreasing budgets, how in the hell is a coach going to go to his AD and ask for money to send 40 athletes to Mt SAC when the AD now has to spend that money to get his people to the regionals Also, as an FYI, the SC-UCLA dual would back up to the last weekend in April This is a very important meet for those schools as you know Why would they come a week prior to that and run hard at Mt SAC?? In fact, I have spoken to both Mike Garrett and Pete Dalis and they both tell that with regionals their participation at SAC would be minimal I can't possibly make this any clearer Regionals would basically kill off the big realy meets It is a stupid idea to begin with A kid who runs 1060 in the East Regional gets to go to the Big Dance because he wins and a kid in the Southern Regional who runs 1015 and finishes 6th does not?? Which is why I say the whole idea is simply wrong Scott
Re: t-and-f: SEC Champs and regional qualifying
Any way you want to cut it, Rich, with all due respect, the worst thing about regional qualifying is the fact that it is just plain wrong Wrong---that's all there is to say about it And this is not my original statement; I have heard it put this way by many coaches at both DI and DII schools and the DII schols are not even involved! Scott
t-and-f: SEC Champs
Well gang, Kebba summed things up pretty well. All I can tell you is that I have certainly never announced a more powerful meet at the collegiate level. And this was my 12th SEC meet. An absolutely fantastic meet with great performances on both the men's and women's sides. Very well organized as is always the case in Hogland. Great competition, great sportsmanship, great gamesmanship (as is to be expected in the SEC, but not in a malicious manner) with both meets coming right down to the wire. Women decided in the 4x400 and the men in the TJ just prior to the running of the 4x400. This may well have been the greatest conference meet ever; I surely do not know of one better. And, clearly, Kebba's point about regionals is well taken. These great conference meets would all but disappear with that silly concept, not to mention the blows which would have to be absorbed by the big relay meets. Scott
Re: t-and-f: NY Post Editorial that hits home with many of us!
So the way you resolve this problem is to watch or do something else, which is what I normally do. I will be in New York at the start doing a track meet! But hey; you guys on the East Coast at least will have the opportunity to watch the Games live. We in LA get a one hour tape delayfrom Salt Lake! Scott
Re: t-and-f: american men's outdoor collegiate record - 3k?
That's it. 7:32.1 in Oslo on 27 June 1978. Rudy Chapa of the Ducks is #2 at 7:37.70 in Eugene on 10 May 1979. Scott Davis
Re: t-and-f: american men's outdoor collegiate record - 3k?
It must also be noted that USATF uses the marks through September 1. Only Track and Field News stops after NCAA meet. Moroever, in answer to Bob's question about the official record, while it is true that the NCAA only worries about meet records, the Rono mark is still the record. Whether you want to use FAST, USATF or TFN, they are still the records. Scott
Re: t-and-f: american men's outdoor collegiate record - 3k?
You can bet if I ever happen to be announcing a meet and be fortunate enough to see a collegian run faster than's Rono's mark, it WILL be announced as a collegiate record! The fans need to be made aware of what they have seen. I don't get wrapped up in the word official. Last year at Mt. SAC, there were two American records set in the Men's and Women's one mile walks and they were most certainly annoucned as ARs, even though the distance is not officially recognized. Scott

t-and-f: Potts Library Update and Convention
For those of you who have ordered books, everything will be be sent as soon as I return from the convention on Dec. 3. If you have not yet received the books, it means I have not yet received your check. That applies to several of you who told me to hold material. Please send the checks as soon as possible if you have told me to hold anything for you. I will posting more material in early December. There are still some of the Potts-RLQ 1961 and 1972 All Time Lists available along with the 1960 Olympic book, also a Potts-RLQ effort. Many thanks, Scott Davis
t-and-f: Potts Library - V
Two other sets I can now offer. First, an almost complete run of FAST Annuals, starting in 1979 complete through 1996 missing only 93 and 94, which I will fill in later when I start going through my own backups. This was Don's backup set and all books are in good shape, some mint. All the early scarce ones such as 79, 81, 82 and 88 are there! One set only to the first serious customer. Cost for all 16 books is only 175.00, including the postage. Send a check and I will take care of the rest. Secondly, a very nice early run of the TAFWA Indoor books from Ed Gordon. This set contains all from 1979 through 1988 and these are pristine. There is no 1980 per se; I don't seem to have a 1980 in my collection. In looking at the years, however, it is possible that Ed started renumbering the books during this period since the 79 book has marks through 30 Jun 79 and the 81 book has marks through 15 Sept 80. So I am fairly certain the set is complete for these years. These early ones are hard to find. First check which arrives on my doorstep for 60.00 gets them, and again, I will cover the postage. Many thanks, Scott
Re: t-and-f: Potts Library - V
Very good, Bob, but no. I actually will return the checks. After signing them, of course! sd

Well gang, I have sorted through some more stuff and can offer the following material for sale. First, many thanks for helping me with this stuff; the Potts' family is most appreciative. As per the norm, most of these books are in great shape, some showing just a little wear (these were Don's personal use copies). And clearly, as always, these prices are well below the true value. ATFS Annuals: 1979 - 2 - Scarce - 17.00 1980 - 3 - Scarce - 17.00 1981 - 4 - 13.00 1982 - 3 - 13.00 1983 - 4 - 13.00 1984 - 3 - 13.00 Also and obviously, all of these are scarce: Potts-RLQ All Time World List 1961 - 5 - 15.00 Potts-RLQ All Time World List 1972 - 5 - 15.00 Potts-RLQ ATFS Olympic Handbook 1960 - 6 - 15.00 (One of these is comb bound) Please add 3.00 postage for 1-2 books, 5.00 for 3-4 and 7.00 for more than 4 and I will ship by priority mail and take care of all the rest. Checks payable to me. Many thanks. Stay tuned..more to come! Scott Davis, 4432 Snowbird Circle, Cerritos, CA. 90703
t-and-f: Edmonton Books Gone Potts Update
The Edmonton stat books are gone. Many thanks. Regarding Don, he has now been taken off life support by family members as per his wishes. He is comatose and will not wake up, in all probability. He has been breathing on his own for 24 hours, but the docs say there is way too much damage due to strokes, etc. for him to recover. I am quite sad about this; he was truly like a second father to me. I'll keep you posted. Scott Davis
t-and-f: Don Potts Update
I am sorry to tell you all that Don passed away last night. I am still in a state in a state of shock over this whole thing. Don was like a second father to me and I owe him more than any of you can imagine. I will miss him terribly. Two books we were working on will now be on hold until I figure out if I can successfully complete them without him. Don was born in Seattle, December 15, 1921. After completeing a BS in Physics at Cal Tech in 1943, he obtained his PhD in Math also from Tech in 1947. He taught at Northwestern, Long Beach State, California Berkeley and finally at Cal State Northridge, this last stop for 16 years where he also served at Chariman of of the Math dept. for 6 years. It is here I met him in 1968 after completing my first degree at UCLA. I completed two degrees in Math at Northridge and taught there with Don for 2 years before heading back to UCLA. I stayed at Northridge much longer than under normal circumstances largely due to Don's influence. He was instrumental in getting me the teaching position. I think most of you know Don was one of the founders of the ATFS in 1950 and even prior to this, was instrumental in getting TFN off the ground with Bert and Cordner in 1948. He was also a co-founder of FAST in 1983 with Stan Eales and myself. Don is clearly regarded, along with Roberto Quercetani of Italy, as one of the great statisticians ever and is responsible for recording the data in the sport for over 100 years. His early books are simply marvelous. I am in hopes that his friends will reflect for a moment and think about their favorite Potts' story, of which there are many. He leaves four grown kids. Hopefully, we can all get together during the indoor season and have a beer in his memory. Scott Davis
t-and-f: Edmonton Stat Books
Hi Gang, I have six (6) copies of the Edmonton stat available. This is the IAAF book which was given to members of the media. 660 pages of wonderful data, lists, records, all sorts of stuff. First come, first served. If you send me just 12.00, enough for a decent envelope and priority postage and post office aggravation, I will send one along. US customers only, please. Send me an e-mail if you want me to hold one and then include mailing adress with your check as always. By now I am sure you all have my address. Many thanks. I will be posting soon with a whole bunch of other stuff!! Scott Davis
t-and-f: Don Potts Now Gravely Ill
Netters, Sorry to report that Don Potts, the father of all us statisticians, is now gravely ill and on life support. The prognosis is not good at all. He took a turn for the worse over the weekend. The last time I spoke with him, which was last Thursday, he seemed to be moving forward, but I guess there are just too many complications. I am so sorry for this bad news and I will keep you all informed. Scott Davis
t-and-f: Potts Library-II
Hi Gang, I am still going through this massive array of stuff and preparing a catalogue as time permits. Here is one offer I can make. One only complete set of ATFS Annuals from 1979 through 1997. A total of 19 books. All in good shape, some completely mint, unused. A great opportunity for a young stat guy to start work on a complete set. Price is only 250.00 plus an additional 25.00 for shipping. This works out to only 13.00 per book. First serious response takes them all. I will then get back to you with all of the other ATFS Annuals in that period which are available. Check payable to me and you know the address details by now. I will also be writing those of you who responded regarding the old issues of Track and Field News. I am still working on them as I find more all the time. Scott Davis
t-and-f: African Annuals Gone

Also, anyone out there who is interetsed in early (1948-1960) Track and Field News magazines, contact me personally. I need to gauge the interest at this time. Scott Davis

Re: t-and-f: Quick note on SCHWALD pronunciation
That may be, but when I spoke directly with her this year at Boston about it prior to announcing the indoor meet, she said SCHWALLED. Directly from her lips. I will continue with this until I hear again directly from her. Scott Davis
Re: t-and-f: where's my Terminators?
Not true at all. While Mr. Fanelli did indeed come through, so did I with a great bottle of Moose Drool, somewhat superior to the Terminator. Scott
Re: t-and-f: Thoughts on the five alive
One of the real problems with this method occurred here at the NCAA. As we neared the end of the opening round height, the last guy in the order was forced to take three jumps in a row since no-one else was left. At the bare minimum the rule needs to be changed to avoid that situation. Perhaps when only 6 remain out of 23, they can simply go 6 alive. Scott
t-and-f: FAST and ATFS Annuals-2
Hi gang once again, First, I realized on the post about the ATFS Annuals that I forgot my zip code. For those of you who have not yet memorized it, it is 90703. And also please remember, orders will be processed upon my return from Oregon, week of June 4-7. Now, regarding the FAST Annual, I have received many inquires about cost, how to order, etc. The cost of the USATF Media Guide and FAST Annual is 20 by surface, 23 priority, 24 Europe boat, 30 Europe air. Checks payable to me at the same address as always; Scott Davis 4432 Snowbird Circle, Cerritos, CA. 90703. And as always, order frequently and often, but order. And for Mr. Hersh, this is not an order! Scott
t-and-f: 2001 FAST Annual
Well gang, The 2001 edition of the FAST Annual, once again combined with the USATF Media Guide, is now available. 540 pages of great data, lists, bios, index, records, etc., etc. A must for the rest of the season. FAST members whose dues are current will be receiving their copies soon. Most have been shipped. If your dues are in arrears, please send them now. I will be getting the main body of the shipment by Friday of this week and I can process orders when I return from the SEC on Monday. The cost is 20.00 post paid, 23.00 priority mail, 24.00 to Europe by boat, 32.00 Europe by air, 35.00 by air elsewhere. As always, orders payable to me and sent to the address that you all know and love: Scott Davis 4432 Snowbird Circle Cerritos, California 90703 USA Many thanks. Scott
Re: t-and-f: featured athletes at Mt SAC,
Yep, true enough---American records in both Men's and Women's mile walks. Michele Rohl and Curt Clausen. Two fairly decent names in the sport of race walkingalso, Mike Rohl with a master's record in Clausen's race. Scott
Re: t-and-f: promo of Mt. SAC
People who run meets are NOT necessarlity ignorant of clubs. As I pointed out to Tom in an earlier post, we had massive computer problems over the weekend, including the mainframe on campus going down for part of Sat and most of Sun. This is why we could not get anything up on the web. I am all too familiar with both the GBTC and UCTC; all people were entered properly on the computers. But during the meltdown periods, UNAT was substituted by the clerks when the entries came up blank. That would not have happened had I been clerking but I can't do it all. I had to run the meet the field. Sorry for any confusion; I will do my best to straighten out the final results. I wish some of you would cut me some slack. We do the very best we can with incredibly limited resources. I apologize for any mistakes but they are never made intentionally. Scott Davis - Director
Re: t-and-f: Webb 4:01.81-1600/mile
I will defer to Don after my first post. He was in a much better position to see what was actually happening. I was way up in the announcer's booth about 50 meters from the finish. From my perspective, Webb looked like he was tying up a bit but it is true that the race was clearly in hand. Our splits had Webb with 63.5 for the 3rd lap so I also agree completely with Don on his analysis of where the sub-4 was lost. My question is whether or not Hall will make a run at the sub-4 Sunday at SAC after this race. I have great field to help him, but after the race on Sat night at Arcadia, I just don't know if there is any chance at all. Could be very interesting. Scott Davis
Re: t-and-f: Webb 4:01.81-1600/mile
He was! Scott
Re: t-and-f: Another View on NCAA Regionals
There is absolutely NO WAY that a team will go to the regional with a one week rest after a conference meet. That would be absurd. The meet to have to get the kids qualified for the Big Dance? Not a chance. And, regarding the SC-UCLA dual, part of the problem is due to the fact that SC ends school so early, their finals are normally in the later part of April which puts additional pressure on everything. Main reason they have never appeared at the Cal-Nevada meet, traditionally held on the last weekend of April. This meet, if it is to continue, will now also have to move. The whole thing will be a mess. Scott Davis
t-and-f: Another View on NCAA Regionals
Ed Grant had a wonderful post this AM when he said beware to those of you who are gleeful over this new situation. I would also suggest for all of you gleeful folks to consider getting a ticket to either Mt. SAC, Penn or Drake this year to see what will probably be the last editions of these meets as you currently know them. I will check in with you next year after the big, established meets take horrific attendance hits from the colleges to see whether you still feel this is helping US track and field. The situation for me is so bad that I may even lose UCLA and USC in my own backyard. Reason? Pac 10 must back up at least a week, which puts pressure on the SC-UCLA dual meet, which is quite important to those two schools. The dual will have to back up to perhaps the last weekend in April, so participation at SAC would be very limited. Perhaps you would feel differently if you were on the forefront of really trying to help the sport and trying to do what is right for the largest meet in the country, in terms of numbers of participants. Perhaps you would feel differently if your made your living in the sport. Scott Davis Director - Mt. SAC Relays
Re: t-and-f: Marion shooting for WR in 300 at Mt. SAC?
Well, gang, let me say it again and set the record straight again. Marion is not getting any money from Mt. SAC and there is no bonus money for a WR. I simply thought it might be a good idea to inquire about the possibility of adding Monique to the field for the local interest angle. Thought it might be good for some publicity and thought it might help the meet and maybe even generate some real fan interest. I am so sorry that I have stirred up such a hornet's nest by trying to make the race interesting. Monique is not running in the race and, by the way, I sure as hell won't be saying anything else to anyone regarding the other entrants. Again, excuse me for trying to generate some interest. Scott Davis Director - Mt. SAC Relays
Re: t-and-f: Marion shooting for WR in 300 at Mt. SAC?
First, let me clear up a few things. Marion will receive no money for this attempt at Mt. SAC. Just like all the athletes who show up, there is no appearance fee. Moreover, there is no bonus money involved. Lastly, one of the local high school coaches in the area mentioned that it would be a good idea to inquire about Monique running since she is a local kid (Morse, San Diego) and will be at the meet anyway to compete in the prep section. And absolutely finally, and this is really directed at you, Ken, I thought it was worth a phone call to see what her coach thought of the idea. He said he would get back to me with his thoughts. Perhaps the next time you want to write about something like this, Ken, you might want to contact me as well. I would certainly appreciate the courtesy. Scott Davis Director-Mt. SAC Relays
Re: t-and-f: DI Regional Qualifying Discussion
What many of you folks are completely forgetting is the following. The big, established meets in the US, such as Mt. SAC, Penn and Drake will take serious hits and could be hurt in a disastrous fashion. What motivation under this system would Arkansas have to travel to Mt. SAC each year? Similarly, why would UCLA want to go to Penn? In point of fact, the Big 12 has already scheduled their conference meet for 2002 for the last weekend in April. No big 12 schools at Drake?? That will certainly enhance the Drake Relays, won't it. Give me a break. Most of those schools have competed at Drake for over 70 tears. And, that means no Texas, as an example, at Penn. Another big help. And it means no Colorado at Mt. SAC; they come out every year. The other point is that the conference meets will no longer mean anything. They will all be backed up a week and the value of a conferecne title will be diminished somewhat since people will now have to concentrate on the regional meet. In other words, many people will simply skip the conference meet. Most D1 coaches that I have spoken with, which number many, are adamantley against this new approach. It seems to me to be a real bad idea and when I put my Mt. SAC hat on, I can see nothing but problems and a serious blow to our meet. Scott Davis Director - Mt. SAC Relays
Re: t-and-f: Stars
Absolutely correct. I have had Mo and Marion for the last 4 years. And even the 2 times Mo did not run, he was signing autographs, shaking hands, walking up and down the track with me and talking to the folks. The fans love that stuff and will come to see it. Sure, they may have been disappointed that Mo was not yet ready to run, but he was there pressing the flesh. For the fans, that is just as important in my view. Scott Davis - Mt. SAC Director
Re: NFLE ( was Re: t-and-f: Imperialist )
Somehow, it does't fly. "Montana to Rice over the middle for 8 meters and a first down." I think the answer is for everyone to take one of my Math classes at Mt. SAC and learn the metric system properly and how to use it in Track and Field. All of my practical examples come from TF, including things like how many liters you can consume during the 10K while watching and the number of kilograms the runners may drop during the race! Scott (The Old Math Professor) Davis
Re: t-and-f: Dragila/Gray/Trammell/TV
One of the reasons people get the hj-pv conversions loused up is because they use the wrong tables. There is a completely different set of tables in the BGB (and all the versions of the tables that I worked on) for the hj-pv and for the other events. As I have mentioned many times to many people, a 5.80 pole vault is NOT the same as a 5.80 long jump. So if you are using the lj tables to convert Stacy's marks, many times you will be incorrect. Please read the preface in the BGB on page 8. If you don't have a BGB, you should buy one from TFN. Anyone who really wants to understand the math should contact me privately. Scott Davis
Re: t-and-f: re: USATF Standards
Unless I am completely in a fog, the information you have seen must contain a typo. The standards window is from May of 2000, not 2001. Obviously it would make no sense to go from May 2001. I have not seen the document you refer to, but I am pretty sure it is wrong. Scott Davis Director - Mt. SAC (Where you CAN get your standard!) Chairman - Women's Standards
Re: t-and-f: John McDonnell
This happened last Sunday. I spoke with Mildred 3 days ago and she siad coach is fine and resting comfortably. He will be released from the hospital tomorrow. You can't keep a good hog down. Scott Davis
t-and-f: Davis Medical Update - 2001
Well, gang, here is the current scoop for those who may be interested. If you are not, hit the delete key now. I had another PET scan last Friday at UCLA. After an injection of 18-fluro-2-deoxglucose (FDG) which makes you glow like a 50,000 watt bulb for 4 hours, I went through the scanner. I was fortunate enough this time to watch the images come through with the Docs after the test. First time in color. Absolutely amazing images! Nothing of a suspicious nature showed up while I was in the room during the "wet" read. The subsequent careful study and comparisons with the last tests found no changes. So I continue to be absolutely clear of this dreaded disease once again. I am now out 39 months and am the 6th longest survivor in this melanoma research program at the John Wayne Center and UCLA. I met with my chief oncologist today and he is obviously delighted. Of course, one never knows for sure but he seems to think that I have beaten this thing. I will go through the research blood draws once again in April and have another scan in the the July-August timeframe. The success rate of the treament is also on the rise with other patients as it becomes more refined. I thank all of you who have inquired over the past 12 months about my condition. I appreciate your thoughfulness and caring. Now on with the track season!! Scott Davis
Re: t-and-f: Coaching selections.
When you are nominated, you must leave the room during the vote. You can never vote for any position for which you have been nominated. Trust me, Darrell, there is absolutely no hanky-panky with these votes. And, FYI, Kelly was not even at the convention when he was selected. Scott
Re: t-and-f: Coaching selections.
Yes, it is Scott Davis of Mt. SAC fame and also a member of the International Competition Committee of USATF. This committee is/was the one responsible for picking these staffs. This committee is now defunct as a result of the reorg within USATF which took full effect this year. We had our last meeting in Albuquerque. I can tell you that one hell of lot of work goes into these selections. They are taken quite seriously. I think people are way out of line passing judgement on staffs particularly if they are unaware of the procedure. Many times, people are nominated and decline for various reasons. You may think it is a good 'ole boy network, but it isn't that at all. And this has nothing to do with my selection on the Men's staff. Scott Davis Mt. SAC Relays
Re: t-and-f: Re: Embarassment
I take offense at the statements about the Associations failing miserably with grass-roots development. In Southern California, we have well over 100 registered youth clubs and have many, many meets each year. We have a very active Youth Committee who is able to be self-sufficient financially. And we do this with little help from the national office. Moreover, a ton of collegiate athletes have come out of the So Cal youth programs, particularly from clubs like the Pasadena Running Roses, LA Jets and the Cheetahs. And many of the these collegiate athletes have gone on to the elite level. Think twice before you criticize the Associations. Scott Davis President - Southern California USATF
Re: t-and-f: Boorish behavior
Unfortunately, you are probably right. Everything in sports seems to be going that way these days. How about Terrill Owens the other day in Dallas?? The Baron
t-and-f: Super Meet Correction
For those who care, the official results of the Super Meet in Yokohama have one correction. In the Men's 800, Bogdanov was the winner, not Borzakovskiy. Just change positions 1 and 3; times are correct. Bogdanov 1:48.97, Bor 1:49.45. Change came some 3 hours after the meet. I was certain that Bogdanov had won at the time. Scott Davis
Re: t-and-f: Conversion Lesson [was List Supervisor ...]
With this method, just make sure you understand that you are getting only an approximation. You are not truly doing the conversion correctly. All such conversions require a "fudge" factor, which I have fully explained in the preface to the Green Book, Gold Book, Blue Book, etc. You have to use this "fudge" factor, for lack of a better term to get the true conversion. You have simplified the problem greatly. Scott Davis
