From AskWoody: Don't patch, Don’t use Internet Explorer, and enhanced phishing protection in Office 365 ATP

2019-10-06 Thread Debby Franson via Talk

Hi everyone

AskWoody is a reputable web site with good technical advice.

Hold off patching until Tuesday if you haven't done it yet, because patches
are causing havoc on some machines.

Internet Explorer has a vulnerability.

There is enhanced phishing protection in Office 365 ATP.

To read these areicles, follow this link.

It is a short link, because it is the home page.

RE: Internet Explorer Help

2016-12-21 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi:
I had that problem and turned off some things in Internet Explorer under the
View Menu.
I turned off most all the items under the ToolBar selections Menu.
Also, there are the items under the Explorer Bar menu you might want to
experiment with turning off.
I do have the tools bar locked whatever that does.
In any event, I got rid of that particular situation but don't remember
exactly what I turned off under the ToolBar menus and the Explorer bar
menues.

 Hi,

I'm using Windows 10 anniversary edition with the latest version of
Window-eyes. Are there settings I need to make so that when I open a web
page in IE I'm at the top of the page? As it's set up now, I have to tab a
few times to get to it. There are a few things that are displayed like a
refresh button, a security button and favorites bar.
Anyway to get rid of all that?

Thanks

I agree, things should have worked differently. I have seen this kind of
behavior once in a while. One workaround is as follows.

1. Go to the Edit Box, and turn off the Browse Mode.

2. Mark all the text, and copy it to the clipboard.

3. Hit Ctrl-A, then Del, to delete the text from the editbox.

4. Open things like Notepad, and paste in your copied text.

5. Do your editting, and then copy all back to the clipboard.

6. Go back to the Editbox, with browse mode still turned off, and paste
in your etxt.

Like I said, it is a workaround - though a rather long way around a
simple bush. Things really should not have to be that way, and I don't
have a good answer on why they are.

I know how to turn browse mode on and off. The problem is that, when

this happens, for whatever reason, the edit box goes silent, and normal
reviewing with the arrow keys produces only silence. The whole box
reads with browse mode turned on, but it obviously can't be edited. So
far, the only way I've found to make the box speak when browse mode is
off is to close and reopen W-E.
I hope that's clearer.

Internet Explorer and Brows Mode Freezing Issue Progress

2016-04-02 Thread via Talk
When using Facebook chat, it's a good idea to delete your conversations
every so often. Otherwise, Facebook chat seems to use up a lot of resources
for some reason. I guess if you check your e-mail online, you should
occasionally do the same for similar reasons. Whether e-mails or conversations
via Facebook chat, I do understand that some people, including myself, like to
keep record of their messages, conversations, etc. to see their progress over
time. But I guess if your system is going to crash, you won't be able to do
that forever.

Hope this helps,

Chris

it doesn't make any difference how much you upgrade w e. when i upgraded to 9.4
there were 3 factory set files that were out of date.

two were firefox and i e. in my case i couldn't turn browse mode on.
i would also try clearing the i e cache. sometimes this will cause it to crash.

try disableing any add ons. they may be causeing crashes.

While I don't get this issue as much in Chrome, I prefer IE
because Window-Eyes
lets me have more control of the mouse and reads more
descriptions of buttons.
After turning everything off in Verbosity>Brows Mode, the issue
isn't as bad,
but is still annoying. I even updated to WE9.4.

What advantage will an accessible Edge browser be over Internet Explorer?

2016-02-24 Thread Kevin Minor via Talk
Hi.

The subject says it all. I'm a happy user of IE, but there may be some things
that Edge will do that it can't. The only thing Edge will have over IE is it
will be more current.

The discussion of different browsers reminds me of 20 years ago. Back then,
the browser of choice was Netscape. I was happy using that, then IE came
along. It took screen readers a while to work with the new browser, but they
eventually did. I figure that Edge will be similar.

Just some thoughts and a question to ponder.

Have a blessed day, and don't work too hard.

I assume you mean Active X Filtering. I've hardly ever had this turned on.
When I did, it did slow down things quite a bit and caused some audio and
video files not to play. By default, IE has this turned off. However, IE has
CPU rendering on by default, so if yhou reset IE, you should change it to

I found 2 settings so far that impact lockups and, or, crashes.
The software rendering setting I described earlier and now I can further
reduce long pauses and lockups by checking or unchecking the block activeX
setting under the Tools Menu in Internet Explorer.
Crashes are caused when something that IE is trying to load or run crashes
or has delays.
Some of these are activeX controls.
On pages that use these for things like audio / video or advertising
blocking the activeX execution will make things run smother and cleaner.
On some pages blocking activeX might cause a video not to play, others the
videos will still play normally.
I am now checking block activeX on sites I want to read or use in any way
but if I get a problem with something not playing like a video I Uncheck
this setting.
There is a tracking setting I have not played with but, from what I have
read, is akin to the adBlock software with lists and all that jazz and I may
try that out sooner or later unless we get Edge pretty soon.
But then there is getting to be allot of settings to try and coordinate
whenever you want something on a page to just render properly without any
lengthly pauses or crashes me thinks.
I can remember to turn on or off activeX for various sites and even cpu
versus software rendering I use but adding another setting into the mix is
going to get pretty confusing to fix quickly if something doesn't work as
advertised on some site.

Internet Explorer Lockups

2016-02-19 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: Lets change the Is WindowEyes causing Lockups topic title since it does
not appear to be a problem unique to WindowEyes.
Some folks are getting off topic in that thread and I am just trying to
narrow the problem down to see if we cant come up with a common set of items
to try and find or suggest a fix.

Using: W7 HP 32 bit, latest versions of WE, Firefox and Thunderbird

Use the three steps below to make both Firefox and Thunderbird
accessible with the mouse just like they used to be. I was able to use
WE to make the necessary changes in Thunderbird but needed sighted
assistance for Firefox. For some reason WE kept loosing speech in the
case of Firefox but maybe NVDA would work.

A similar method has been around for a while but never had any success
with it but these three steps really work. In short, I was amazed with
the change in mouse accessibility the alterations made.

Hopefully, someone can come up with a method to make Chrome mouse
accessible as well.

Unfortunately it is not known for sure whether this technique will work
as well under W8 and W10 as it does under W7 32 and 64 bit. If you do
try it under W8 or W10, please inform the list of your results. i.e.
Either positive or negative.

This is the three steps needed to fix the mouse cursor problem.

The third step is the new one. You do have to arrow down many times to
find it. A lot do seem to sound the same, so be careful you get the
correct one to change.

No feedback in combo boxes in internet explorer

2016-01-14 Thread Simon Cavendish via Talk
Hi,

I went to the page from which one can download vocalizer voices for
Window-eyes. When I opened the combo box in which to choose a language and
then the following one where you choose the voice, I had no voice feedback from
Window-eyes. Had I not been using a Braille display, I wouldn't be able to
make the choice. I run latest window-eyes in Windows 10 64bit. Anybody else
had this experience? Can it be fixed or is it a bug?

Many thanks

Subject: No feedback in combo boxes in internet explorer

Many thanks

Simon

Hello,

I'm using Vista Home Premium with Window-Eyes 7.5.1 and my browser is IE 9.

More and more often when I go to web sites, it tells me that I'm using an
out of date browser and that I should upgrade. Can I do this with the
version of Window-Eyes I'm currently running? I realise that I'm using an
older version of WE, however, my budget doesn't permit me to do anything
about that at this time. Is there another browser I could use that would
work better?

Thanks

Firefox and Internet Explorer 11 and Windows 8.1 think Cookies Question

2015-08-26 Thread Rick Thomas via Talk
Hi: some time ago I downloaded and ran Firefox as my primary browser due to
WE and IE 11 crashes but ran into so many problems with flash and WE crashes
I switched back to Internet Explorer 11 as my primary browser.
Now all the sites I visit don't seem to recognize me - I have to log into
them every time I visit them where before I was automatically logged in.
I had noticed something about cookies when I switched from IE 11 to FireFox
but it seemed normal at the time.
I have the privacy settings in IE 11 set to 2, either by default or by
FireFox or something since I have never changed it.
Does Firefox do anything with cookies and, or, muck with the Windows Cookies
folders or location?
Anyway, has anyone run across this situation and, or, do you have anything I
can look at to try and get my cookies or whatever working again so I don't
have to log on to every site over and over?

I just called and spoke with A.I. Tech support, and I was told they were
quickly working on another update, 9.3, and maybe that might fix some
things. Also to check my system for malware and other conflicts.

Other than that, use NVDA, which is not as good as Window Eyes, even on
a Bad day, and yet, sometimes it works better than 9.1 or 9.2.

Re: Still experiencing frequent crashes with Internet Explorer 11

2015-08-05 Thread via Talk
yes 9.X is definitely a Problem Child. but I recall version 7 was a bit
of a fright as well.

Sorry to hear that 9.2 is still having issues.

According to some, 9.2 is working fine for them. but, I have seen this
before, as not all systems run the same software the same.

there were times I would be asked, by my Boss, to test the Companies latest
software, and I would find bugs, report them to the Boss. He would then
check them on his system using the same build of the software, and there
were times, he could find no problems. And yet on my system, I could
repeat problems.

i recall one time, we had a big big problem, but we could not duplicate
the problem on any system in the Company. And yet we had a problem. We
finally had a customer that had called in, that lived close to the shop
where we worked. i actually talked one of the programmers to go out to
the guys house and see what he could find. the programmer drove to the
customers house, and sure enough, he was able to figure out why our
program had issues. Came back, made a few adjustments in the code.
recompile and the big problem went away.

All Computers run Windows and the programs made for Windows. Just some
run them better than others.

RE: [EXTERNAL] RE: A new feature in Internet Explorer

2015-08-03 Thread Baracco, Andrew W via Talk
I do not believe that Window Eyes existed in 1993. As I recall, the
first screen reader that could access Windows was Window Bridge, in 1993
followed shortly after by JFW. Window Eyes came late to the party, I
believe in 1995.

I started in 1993 with window eyes. I don know exactly but I know it
was the early dayswith version 3 and then version 4. I hhad purchased
every version plus sma's all the way up to 8.4. Due to personal
finances I have decided to go the office route once it was available as
of 9. So I have not had any tech related issues hta I can think of. I
am glad tha widnow eyes was the first ot support chrome. Also they have
been working with intuit in making quickbooks accessible with window
eyes.

You might want to check your timeline. 25 years ago I was using GW
Micro's VocalEyes on DOS and there was no such thing as Windows.

Sheesh! Now I suddenly feel old. Thanks a bunch. (grin)

Here is a feature that they've added to Internet explorer which is turned

on

by default called Do not track.

It's not perfect, but they are actually trying to improve the security of
 Windows not make it worse.

Now, can we please get back to talking about Window-eyes?

Internet Explorer View Source in Windows 10

2015-07-28 Thread Joseph Norton via Talk
Hi list:

Previously, in Windows 8.1 and earlier, I could hit View Source and a
notepad-like page would pop up showing the page source I was viewing.

Now, in Windows 10, this brings up another window that WE has a little
trouble with.

Any way to get the old behavior back, or, am I stuck with this new view? If
I am stuck with it, how can I make WE work better with it?

Thanks!

Internet Explorer and Amazon

2015-06-04 Thread Gary Petraccaro via Talk
If this has been discussed, my appologies. But, I tried to access Amazon's
site including their accessibility site with MSIE11 and WE 9.1. I found it
problematic if I hit tab and expectecd to go to a new link, and the cursor keys
were almost useless. I don't remember this being the case not too long with
Amazon. This leads me to believe that either changes in design usage have made
the web harder to use and that we will be having more problems in the future,
or that Internet Explorer has become more and more worthless. I would
appreciate some input on this from anyone with experience. It might be that
I'm just not using WE to it's fullest capabilities. Thanks in advance for the
help.

Hi all

I have Window-Eyes9.1, but I think I have experienced the differences
between these browsers under previous versions of Window-Eyes.
If I select a previously broadcast programme via
bbc.co.uk
Internet Explorer shows me a Listen with pop out player link, which
Firefox does not.
Is this true for me alone, or is this a general problem, and can it be
fixed?
I notice other controls on other sites, particularly buttons, which IE
shows and Firefox does not.
The apparent inaccessibility of the pop out player with Firefox is a
particular problem because its controls work really well once selected.
I would prefer Firefox to be my default browser if possible, but the
browser seems determined to make itself inaccessible in annoying ways,
while trumpeting its commitment to accessibility.
Why does Firefox fail to recognise some of the controls with which IE
seems to have no problem?
