Re: [talk-ph] ideas for tracking stepjuan's journey (Fwd: STEPJUAN Bai: A walking expedition for Children with Cancer)
Well what can he carry, a GPS logger is easy to carry and runs fine on batt but it only logs, so what possible device can be used to log and upload at the same time or if it just logs, how often can an upload be done? Once you have something which can upload, you just figure out how to display the logs online using a website or a 3rd party service. Something like Sportstracklive or its competitors let you track yourself live using a phone or similar device and display it live online, the problem with constant upload is the battery drain, and well GPRS charges but im sure an 1200 unlimited 3G subscription might offset that. I know the developer of sportstracklive, he's a foreigner living the philippines. It's cool for live tracking as longs its not a security issue, and allow people to comment or alert people as he passes by certain areas. I know he walks during the day, is there a mobile device charges solar unit :) or a really low powered GPS + 3g unit + solar power charger, or some dynamo that will charge the phone as he walks :) On 3:59 AM, maning sambale wrote: StepJuan is back on the road. But this is the problem; the legal side of things is the central issue to OpenStreetMap at the moment. You can't simply try and sideline a difficult issue by describing it as legal. No one is sidelining anything - if it's worthy of discussion, discuss it with those who can answer the questions in a forum where it can be examined in detail. In fairness, I don't want to get spammed on the talk list with trolling (Anthony?) remarks about the license change, but saying that people can't ask questions about it *at all* is just a lazy attempt to try and ignore the defining feature of OSM. There's a balance that needs to be struck, but people should understand that legal issues are core to OSM. No, just that your more likely to get an answer about the legal side of things in legal-talk. But this is the problem; the legal side of things is the central issue to OpenStreetMap at the moment. You can't simply try and sideline a difficult issue by describing it as legal. *Open*StreetMap is defined by its license, but there are plenty of people who want to change the license, and therefore the core of the project, without explaining in layman's terms what this means. I signed up to contribute to a map with a specific license; changing the license down the line isn't a legal matter, it's a core user issue. This is something that many in the licensing discussions have failed to address, probably because it's difficult and it's easier to say the legal mailing list is over there. I've received emails from OSM contributors asking why I haven't accepted the new license terms; I always reply saying that I would consider it if it could be explained in a manner that didn't end in trolling on the mailing lists. So far nobody has managed to do that. In fairness, I don't want to get spammed on the talk list with trolling (Anthony?) remarks about the license change, but saying that people can't ask questions about it *at all* is just a lazy attempt to try and ignore the defining feature of OSM. Something that would be nice but isn't as critical is to pick up on bicycle=preferred/avoid cues for ways that have been observed by mappers to be ideal/scary to use by bicycle. I would also suggest providing more weight to residential roads over higher priority roads if they lack cycleway=* tags or bicycle=designated tags, since at least in the US, major arterials are often the least ideal route for a cyclist, particularly inexperienced, out of shape, or extremely young/old riders. It would be a selling point to shoot for the 8-88 with no special bicycle skills demographic by default with the ability to change routing options based on strength (which already exists with the hill modes) or ability (ie, intermediate riders may get routed onto a secondary now and then and prefer residential to tertiary, and bump it one higher for strong riders, and include motorways and trunks where not tagged bicycle=no for die-hard utility cycling) signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [OSM-talk-nl] Lambertus' OSM kaart site traag of stuk?

Re: [Talk-at] Maxspeed-Karte
[Talk-at] Tiefgaragen und car sharing
Hwy 1;97/5 interchange west of Kamloops: heading east on 1, then changing to south on 5, motorway_link incorrectly tagged as oneway. Sam L, should [http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/24446790] be a two-directional single carriageway or one way dual carriageways (has a concrete Jersey barrier in the centre)? I've set it to two-directional for now. Yes... I believe you have that correct now. No barrier as I remember. Thanks. The interchange at Highway 93 (Icefields Parkway) and the TransCanada was not routing correctly coming south off the Parkway. I made some minor edits there and hopefully that will fix it, but the Bing coverage is poor. Also, there has been a lot of construction through there as they twin the highway. Anybody with better local knowledge willing to give it a go? [Talk-ca] Here we go again...
Anybody got a claim on user user_5365? [http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/user_5365/] This user is doing lots of Canvec importing, and is actually self-identifying as a bot (with the tag bot=yes). Rather disconcerting, considering the fierce debate that happened just a couple weeks ago over on talk@. This user seems to be working mostly in Alberta. Have they made many errors? It would be nice if JOSM had a plugin to assist in spot-checking a user's work (by automatically downloading the areas they worked on, so that they can be looked over). There's a high probability that this was the user who nuked a section of Hwy 93 near BC/AB border, but that could have been one mistake in a sea of excellent quality edits. Let's try and nip this one in the bud before it becomes a problem. Adam ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca

I'll second what Richard said. This whole argument of talk could have been avoided (or at least delayed) if someone had tried contacting me before I was accused. I've found the people on talk-ca to be a little calmer, so I thought it would be okay to send a message here. I wouldn't say people here are less opinionated, but I think they are less vociferous about their opinions, and I think that's due to the small size of the list. Shortly after my first message here, I did send a message to the user, asking them to subscribe to the list, and included a link to the archive of my first message. This user has been registered for a number of years, so I figured they might be a regular here. Re: [Talk-ca] Secret routing demo.
Langley, BC: Hwy 1 west to 56 Ave at 1/13 interchange: short section marked as oneway when it shouldn't be. Fixed. Just south of Merritt, at the 5/5C/97A interchange, heading north on 5, then going east on 97C, there's a traffic-lit intersection with 97C. Since 97C is dual carriageway, the intersection is an H design, but the connector of the H is set as motorway_link, which implies oneway. Setting oneway=no.
