[OSM-talk] User diary enhancements, subscriptions, Facebook/Twitter integration
Has there been any discussion of enhancing the user diary system? I couldn't find any discussions on the wiki or lists, but please point me to them if they exist. My number one suggestion is that we allow users to subscribe to certain diary posts. I'll comment on an entry, and then someone will follow up, but I'll have no idea unless I remember to go back and check. That got me wondering about adding the possibility to share posts with Facebook/Twitter/etc, and then even allowing login to OSM with Facebook/OpenID, and who knows what else. I know we need to be careful about not trying to implement a full blown blogging platform, but I think it's important to have some of these features. I don't know anything about Ruby or Rails, but maybe someday I could take a stab at it myself, or maybe someone here has the interest and skills. Yes, there is a fully functional OpenID implementation. http://openid.dev.openstreetmap.org/ However, it currently doesn't seem to have the political support necessary to get it merged. But perhaps if enough people express their interest this might change. It currently only supports OpenID, so it doesn't work with Twitter or Facebook, as they have implemented their own login protocol, however it does work with things like gmail and yahoo mail and any other provider supporting OpenID, which is quite a number. It would be possible to support login via twitter as well, should the OpenID branch ever get deployed, as it uses an authentication based on OAuth, which shouldn't be too difficult to implement. Facebook is imho less likely, as as far as I know, it uses a proprietary protocol and so I would be less enthused to support that. You do still need to create an account, but OpenID does hopefully make that step easier too. For example, if you hit the edit button without having an account, you get redirected to the login page. If you then hit e.g. the gmail button you will automatically get to the create account page with some of the details already pre-filled in (coming from the OpenID provider) You then only have to confirm the account creation and the CT. Once done, you are logged in and automatically referred back to Potlatch for editing. If you are using an OpenID provider that returns an email address we can trust (e.g. gmail), you also no longer need to confirm your email address. So you should be able to start editing from not having an account within 4 or 5 clicks. (I haven't checked to verify the exact number) Not entirely seamlessly, but hopefully easier than the current workflow of creating an account. In Nederland is type=multipolygon gebruikelijker. Beide tags werken.
Re: [Talk-ca] Topographic map app using OSM data
Must have been too many late nights. When I skimmed through the description of the app while responding to you, I thought I somehow had forgotten to mention OpenStreetMap in the description. But when I went to go add it, I found that it had been there all along - turns out that I hadn't forgotten after all: Of course, there is a lot more to Mapster than just a visualization of the terrain in an area. We use data from the OpenStreetMap project to be able to show you where roads, trails, stores, coffee shops, and hundreds of different types of features can be located. Approximately a billion points make up the current OpenStreetMap data set, and the collection is continuing to grow at an astounding rate. More details about OpenStreetMap, including the appropriate license details (currently CC-BY-SA, but that will change to ODbL when appropriate), and information on how to get involved in the OpenStreetMap community are found within the program itself. I'm not sure what additional attribution to OpenStreetMap might be relevant. I decided against putting OpenStreetMap branding on the rendered map images themselves, for a couple of reasons. First, as the device displays can be small, adding anything there unnecessarily is very distracting to the user experience (some may disagree on whether they consider license information always visible necessary, but I see no requirement for that). The second reason is that OpenStreetMap data is only one portion of the data set used by my software - if I put up a banner in the images referencing OpenStreetMap, it would only be appropriate to also have to mention the other sources of data I use (for topographical information) as well. That's why accreditation on the images themselves doesn't seem appropriate to me, considering how OpenStreetMap is referenced in the description and in the relevant places in the software itself. Dan On 2011-May-06, at 8:11 PM, Dan Charrois wrote: Hi again. I'm glad you noticed that - I thought I *had* attributed OSM.. this was an oversight. OpenStreetMap is in the keywords used in searching for itt , and is definitely mentioned prominently within the app itself - both in the attributions section, as well as significantly in the help section within the app, where I discuss how the maps are generated, and encourage people to participate in OpenStreetMap to continue to improve the data used in generating the maps. But I agree that it wouldn't be out of place in the app description on iTunes, and I'll change it - we'll see how long it takes Apple to update my description change. I considered, but decided against putting in OSM branding overlaid on top of the map itself continually while the person is using the program - the screens are tiny and tend to be cluttered enough with the screen controls and map itself without that. But I'll definitely add an OSM attribution into the description on iTunes. On 5 May 2011 18:01, Peter Miller peter.mil...@itoworld.com wrote: Should we add something about permissive and private paths to this view? If we had that then the job to do locally would be to convert all the grey paths and turn them into one of the colours. Currently anything that is permissive will stay grey and the risk will be that other people will come and review the same path time and time again wasting loads of time. On paths/tracks, designation=* is only supposed to be for recording a definite legal status of the route. There's also suggested tagging for *signed* permissive routes, but I don't think we'd want to add anything for private paths (we have access=private, etc for things like that). There will be a lot of customary unsigned paths that are effectively permissive but wouldn't be signed as such (and hence we won't use the designation tag on them), and lots of paths in towns that aren't officially designated as public rights of way, but are nevertheless considered legal to use. Thus I don't think it's ever going to be an aim to get rid of all the grey lines. Though if we can reduce the number of unknown coloured designation values that might be good. Here are a few suggestions for some additional values that could be given colours, which would probably make the view even more useful: 1/ As well as the various highway=* ways that you're considering, I'd probably also include highway=track, as quite a few countryside routes (especially near me) are tracks rather than paths/footways. 2/ I'd give colours to the the two common permissive versions: permissive_footpath and permissive_bridleway. It would be good if their colours could be related to those for the public versions. Maybe a paler yellow and a paler blue could be used? 3/ I don't know if anyone else has been doing this, but I've been using designation=unclassified_highway for tracks that are officially public highways, but aren't really suitable for regular driving. (Hence it didn't really seem right to use highway=unclassified; but other suggestions for tagging these welcome.) These are typically marked on OS maps as Other Routes with Public Access. You can check their status by asking the local highways authority. Just like a normal road, you can legally drive, ride, or walk on these. They're pretty much like a byway_open_to_all_traffic in that respect, though there will be some subtle legal differences, hence the need for different tagging. Based on the signs that some local authorities use for these, I'd suggest colouring them in black. I hope those suggestions are useful. [Talk-us] Announcing the DC Sidewalks Project
Folks, I've been working a few months on a project which is now ready to launch, the DC Sidewalks Project: http://dcsidewalks.emacsen.net As many of you know, we have excellent new routing software, and it does a great job for cars. But we also have pedestrian routing, and right now we have very poor data for that in the US. I'd like to change that, and I'd like your help. What I've done is to create a customized PL2 instance which renders streets and highlights missing sidewalk data. I also provide a background layer of imagery, showing the pavement. From these two things, you can determine if a road has a sidewalk, and mark it up using a simple sidewalk={both|left|right|no} tag. This will allow a router to determine if the street is walkable. Right now the data is limited to Washington, DC, where the pavement data is publicly available. This project is more than about sidewalks. It's the first of its kind, a customized Potlatch 2 instance with customized imagery, MapCSS and presets. I hope to be able to use this technique to make more custom PL2 instance sites, where mappers can focus on a single feature. The site is going to grow and change over time, but everything there works today, so after months of working on it, I'm finally formally announcing it. I also provide a background layer of imagery, showing the pavement. From these two things, you can determine if a road has a sidewalk, and mark it up using a simple sidewalk={both|left|right|no} tag. If you expand the project outside the US, you might want to avoid the word 'pavement', which means sidewalk in the UK. This will allow a router to determine if the street is walkable. It's certainly more pleasant to walk on a sidewalk, and a router should prefer sidewalks, but any street is walkable unless tagged foot=no. You simply walk on the side of the road, against traffic. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
