Re: [talk-au] new OpenStreetCam competition

2019-03-20 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi Ross,
It shouldn’t be long at all before the trip shows up on your own profile page.
You should see it appearing there even as it uploads. After uploading, it may
show as ‘processing’ for a little while as OSC adds privacy blurring and sign
detections. After that is done, the trip should be publicly visible, in most
cases within hours if not minutes. At that time the images should appear in
JOSM and iD as well.
Let me know

[talk-au] new OpenStreetCam competition

2019-03-18 Thread Martijn van Exel
Howdy.

We had a good time with the first OpenStreetCam competition, the winners
received their prizes, and we decided to hold another one. The main prize this
time is an OSC Waylens Horizon camera. This is a fairly nifty device that lets
you automatically record and upload to OSC. The competition is open now until
April 15th. As before, just collect more OSC points than other mappers to win.

[talk-au] Sign detections from OpenStreetCam

2019-02-28 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi all,

You will remember from my previous messages to this list that OpenStreetCam
held a competition to collect imagery in Australia (as well as in New Zealand).
The winners have their gift cards, but the community as a whole gains as well.
Our map team used the contributed imagery to generate a large enough training
set for our sign detection platform to learn 45+ (and growing)
Australia-specific sign types. You can use the detected signs to map in JOSM
(iD in the future) if you install the OpenStreetCam plugin.

New imagery captured will be analyzed for signs almost immediately. If you go
to your own trips you can click on the ‘detections’ tab to see results.
Example: https://openstreetcam.org/details/999263/314/detections

Note that none of this data will be added to OSM automatically — it is
available for the community to use.

Here’s a blog post with some more detail:
http://blog.improveosm.org/en/2019/02/openstreetcam-detect-signs-in-australia-newzealand/

I hope that you will keep contributing to OSC to improve coverage and generate
more of this useful mapping data.

Happy mapping,

Martijn___

[talk-au] OpenStreetCam competition results

2019-02-06 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi everyone,

The OpenStreetCam competition is over. Thanks to everyone who contributed!
We’ll do a blog post about this soon on improveosm.org (that is the Telenav web
site that has all our OSM related stuff) but I didn’t want to delay on
announcing the WINNERS. I’ll post a link when it’s up.

The numbers 1 in each country get $100 gift cards (in local dollars obviously),
the two runners up in each country get $25 gift cards. We’re sending those out
digitally today and tomorrow!

Australia

1 —> steve91 with 346251 points
2 —> robbie-bloggs with 222138 points
3 —> ConsEbt with 171420 points

New Zealand

1 —> ivss-xx with 354409 points
2 —> david-blyth with 332510 points
3 —> nicknz with 105825 points

Total imagery collected is about 36 photos for Australia, and 168000 for
New Zealand. Points awarded are 1 per photo but there’s a multiplier of up to
10x (!) for roads with few or no previous coverage.

User nicknz —> I don’t have a way to contact you, if you’re reading this,
please get in touch off-list so we can send you the gift card.
Everyone else we have contact info for.

If you feel you got close to a prize — we may do this again..Watch this space.

Don’t stop now! We’re using all photos to improve sign recognition for OSC and
the more photos we have, the better that system gets.

Happy Mapping!

Re: [talk-au] Announcing: OpenStreetCam competition

2019-02-01 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi everyone,

The OpenStreetCam competitions in Australia and New Zealand are now concluded!
Thank you all who participated! We will announce the winners next week. I need
to collect and verify the data.

No reason to stop collecting images! They help tremendously with mapping OSM.
As a matter of fact, I created a quick screen-cast to show you how I use OSC
detections and images for mapping. Every time I do this I can’t help but think
of Clarke’s third law — any sufficiently advanced technology is
indistinguishable from magic. Here’s the link to the video —>
https://www.dropbox.com/s/406zllf3qrxpcop/openstreetcam-speed-limit-australia.mp4?dl=0

<https://www.dropbox.com/s/406zllf3qrxpcop/openstreetcam-speed-limit-australia.mp4?dl=0>
and since Dropbox is definitely not magic, let me know if you can’t see this.
Please let me know your feedback on working with OSC in JOSM.

Also — we have our first couple of Waylens Horizon cameras[1] on the way to
you. If you’re interested in capturing with these advanced cameras, let me
know. We plan to get more of them in your hands either through a lending
program or a follow-up OSC competition.

Re: [talk-au] more SEO spam?

2019-01-30 Thread Martijn van Exel
The note content (a bit obfuscated by the Javascript..) is at
https://github.com/osmlab/onosm.org/blob/gh-pages/js/site.js#L121-L141
<https://github.com/osmlab/onosm.org/blob/gh-pages/js/site.js#L121-L141>

Graeme’s point is a good one though — someone will still need to go in and see
the note and act on it. So it’s not a complete ‘pipeline’ where a business is
guaranteed to be added to OSM.

Still I think it’s reasonable to point folks to that. In the US we have dealt
with a lot of SEO spam as well, Clifford Snow (cc) has spent a lot of time on
this topic and may be able to share some insights..

Re: [talk-au] Question on how to fix this intersection

2019-01-30 Thread Martijn van Exel
Especially if the street name does not change AND the road splits into two
oneway segments of the same name AND the angle of the ’turn’ is very slight,
the software should figure this out, and I would say this is indeed an OSMAnd
problem. In any case, the mapping looks correct to me.

Sort of related, we (Telenav map team) have seen cases in other countries where
the road ‘flip-flops’ between single and divided mapping within a short
distance[0]. In these cases we often decide to straighten that stretch out,
making the single segments divided. If you object to this practice, please do
let me know. We can also make a MapRoulette challenge to identify these cases
if they exist here, and let you review them.

You can point businesses to https://www.onosm.org/
which gives businesses an easy way to add themselves. It generates a note on
OSM, that mappers can then turn into an actual node or whatever OSM type is
relevant to add the information to the map in a responsible way.

Re: [talk-au] Announcing: OpenStreetCam competition

2019-01-24 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi all!

Let me give you a status update on the OpenStreetCam competition. We have about
a week to go before the $100 prize and two $25 prizes will be awarded to the
most prolific OpenStreetCammers. If you have the app, you can pull up the
leaderboard and get some idea of where you stand.

The community had collected 144,000 images in Australia before December 1, when
the competition started. Since then, you collected 191,000 more, comfortably
doubling coverage in Australia. Wonderful! The last few days saw a particularly
nice trend upwards.

Also, a word on Waylens dashboard cameras. Telenav had customized cameras made
that capture and upload OpenStreetCam imagery automatically. OSM US has around
20 that they lend to their members. A blog post[1] explains in a bit more
detail what these cameras are. We have some to give out. I would prefer to give
them to one or more local communities who want to make an effort to capture
their entire city or area. If you’re interested, please get in touch with me
off-list.

Happy mapping,
Martijn

Re: [talk-au] Our work in last two weeks

2019-01-24 Thread Martijn van Exel
It sounds like one of those things where opinions are going to vary. Personally
I would split them, but I don’t think it’s a big deal to do it one way or the
other, and it doesn’t affect the map either way.

Mapping to make some random QA tool happy doesn’t sound tenable to me. Horea
(my colleague) shared the OSMCha links mainly because that tool makes it easy
to show all changesets of a group of mappers in one place. I think it’s a bit
too opinionated when it comes to identifying ‘errors’. But hey, it’s open
source software..:)

I’m happy that our work is being scrutinized. Please keep watching our work, we
need your feedback to make sure we’re doing everything according to local best
practices.

2019-01-18 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi all,

I am not sure if user robbie-blogs is reading on this list -- if you are,
please get in touch to get your gift card.

For all others, the competition is still ongoing and you have until Jan 31 to
make your way into the top 3 contributors over the months of December 2018 and
January 2019 and win a $25 or $100 gift card.

Some stats so far: we started at 126 752 images in Australia on Dec 1, now we
are at 330 648 covering 8882 km of which 6293 unique.

Happy mapping / capturing :)

Re: [talk-au] Announcing: OpenStreetCam competition

2019-01-08 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi all,

We have the results for the most prolific OpenStreetCam contributors for
Australia for the period Dec 1 - Dec 24:

#1 ---> robbie-bloggs with 127971 points
#2 ---> steve91 with 65470 points

Congratulations to you both, you have just won yourselves an $25 Amazon gift
card! Please get in touch with me so I can arrange (virtual) delivery.

It's not over yet though. This was just the holiday mid point of the
competition. At the end of January there will be three more prizes ($100 / $25
/ $25) for the overall top contributors for the months of December and January.

If you haven't started capturing yet, no worries. New, not yet covered roads
get you 10x points. That adds up pretty quickly. For example, this 20km trip is
worth more than 6000 points:

Re: [talk-au] Replies to list messages not going to the list?

2018-12-23 Thread Martijn van Exel
Graeme,
It should work the same way for all OSM lists, or for all properly configured
mailing lists for that matter.
Some mail programs try to be smart about it and either inject a ‘Reply-To’
header whenever you compose a response to a mailing list message, or look for a
‘List-Post’ or similar header to automatically direct your response there by
default. So it may depend on the mail client of whomever you are responding to
uses… Whenever I respond to a mailing list I just use ‘Reply to all’ to be sure.

Re: [talk-au] Adding lane tags to major roads

2018-12-16 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi,

The source is on Github (search for mapoulette3 for the frontend / react code
and maproulette2 for the backend / scala codebase) but you don't need to dig
into that to simply create a challenge. You can log onto MapRoulette using your
OSM account, and create a challenge using an Overpass query. I wrote a diary on
how to do this a little while ago,
https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/mvexel/diary/46863

If you don't know any Overpass, I'm more than happy to set a Challenge of your
preference up for you, or show you how to do it.

I did in fact set up an 'add lanes' challenge for Queensland a little while
ago, which you can find here:
https://maproulette.org/mr3/browse/challenges/3376

Folks,

We added an additional holiday prize for the 2 mappers who collect the
most imagery before Christmas.Details added on the competition page! You need
25k points minimum to be
eligible for this prize, but since coverage is very low in Australia,
you collect points very quickly.
Let me know if you have any questions. Happy mapping / capturing,

Thanks. Because you cannot edit the Overpass query for an existing challenge, I
created a new one that has the LPI imagery as default backdrop.
The challenge lives here: https://maproulette.org/mr3/browse/challenges/3387
<https://maproulette.org/mr3/browse/challenges/3387>
It has 9800+ tasks.
I deleted the old one.

Re: [talk-au] Adding lane tags to major roads

2018-12-07 Thread Martijn van Exel
That is a good point. The query would probably be easy enough to modify.
Something like this...

[timeout:190];
area[name=“New South Wales"]->.a;
way[highway~"motorway|trunk|primary"][!lanes][!"lanes:forward"][!"lanes:backward"](area.a);
out body geom qt;

I think it needs to be pre-processed a bit more to weed out the very short
segments. And perhaps work on areas where lanes actually matter (urban) first.

I was looking at how to slice that and got interested in the status of
administrative boundary relations for Australia. It seems to be inconsistent,
for example in South Australia there is pretty good (but not complete) coverage
of admin_level=6 http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/EmZ
<http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/EmZ> and even one admin_level=8
(http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/En0 <http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/En0>) but in other
states the admin_level=6 coverage is pretty sparse or absent
(https://imgur.com/a/gmUJs2r <https://imgur.com/a/gmUJs2r>, query at
http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/En1 <http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/En1> but watch out,
it’s a lot of data). If you all think this is useful to fix / complete perhaps
we can set up a page to coordinate. I’m happy to help.

[talk-au] Announcing: OpenStreetCam competition

2018-12-07 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi folks,

We (Telenav map team) are holding an OpenStreetCam image capture competition.
In case you're not familiar, OpenStreetCam is an open source / open data street
level imagery collection platform for OSM. It is widely used to help improve
OSM (through iD and JOSM) but there is not a lot of coverage in Australia yet.
So with this competition we’re hoping to start to change that.

More details here:
https://github.com/openstreetcam/competitions/wiki/Australia-Competition-Dec-2018

The TL;DR is: collect as many OSC images as you can between now and Jan 31, the
top 3 contributors get $100 / $25 Amazon gift cards!

Happy mapping / capturing!
Martijn

PS in case you’re in NZ, we have a separate competition staring there as well,
https://github.com/openstreetcam/competitions/wiki/New-Zealand-Competition-Dec-2018

[talk-au] Adding lane tags to major roads

I created MapRoulette challenge asking mappers to look at aerial images and add

I wanted to get your opinion on this — good / bad idea? Can it be improved?
Smaller regions? Any feedback welcome.

[talk-au] Open Data

2018-12-05 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi all,

The Telenav OSM map team is doing some research into open data available in
Australia for potentially using to improve OSM. As you all probably know, there
is already a substantial and well maintained page about open data sources at
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Australian_Data_Catalogue. Before we start
adding things to this list, I thought it' be nice and good to discuss.

So far the team has identified the following sources that we'd like to gain
permission to use in the future.

https://data.gov.au/dataset/ipswich-city-traffic-signs/resource/6c822598-de01-4a51-a357-fa1e22039286
 (CC-BY 3.0 Australia)
https://data.gov.au/dataset/ipswich-traffic-signals/resource/af689406-9952-4bfd-b33a-98843e87bee2
 (CC-BY-3.0 Australia)
https://data.gov.au/dataset/trafficsignals (CC-BY 4.0 International)
https://www.geelongaustralia.com.au/data/item/geelong-road-signs2.aspx (CC-BY
3.0 Australia)

I'm wondering what the best way is to proceed. We can send out waiver requests
directly as needed, but perhaps there are folks here who are local to some of
the datasets above and can advise?

[talk-au] MapRoulette challenges

2018-11-27 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi folks.

The Telenav team continuously runs a series of data integrity checks on OSM
data that we’re interested in. The OSM wiki has an overview [1].

Now some of these are easy fixes, and that means they make interesting
MapRoulette challenges. For example here’s a challenge that highlights
suspicious ’name’ values, such as values that contain a semicolon or comma:
https://maproulette.org/mr3/browse/challenges/3316
 It spans both Australia
and New Zealand and has a total of 271 tasks.

I invite you to try it, especially if you haven’t used MapRoulette before. We
can deploy more of them if there’s an appetite.

Anyone can create challenges on MapRoulette, so if there’s something you want
fellow mappers to look at, feel free to set it up. I am happy to assist.

Happy Mapping —

Martijn

Re: [talk-au] Hello!

2018-11-23 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi Nick,
We generally focus on the road network and related tags / attributes
first, since Telenav tends to source search information (including
addressing) from sources other than OSM.
That said, where there is an opportunity to help coordinate adding
address information to OSM, we will certainly consider it.
Is there already some coordination going on, like collecting information
about datasets and licenses on an OSM wiki page?--

By the way - I started collecting the Top Mapper lists for various cities in
Australia using my Meet Your Mapper tool[0]. If you find it interesting you can
review them here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1axVjSpcCuD14AubLzA6E00fMxRLfXBHWPQvdijwsyUM/edit?usp=sharing

<https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1axVjSpcCuD14AubLzA6E00fMxRLfXBHWPQvdijwsyUM/edit?usp=sharing>
. It looks like you are the #1 mapper for the Brisbane area :) (when sorted by
number of nodes last touched).

These lists are based on data publicly available from Overpass, and I haven’t
shared the link more widely, but if you object to having this data readily
available to the community I will unshare it right away.

Re: [talk-au] Hello!

2018-11-20 Thread Martijn van Exel
Hi Joel,

Nice to make your virtual acquaintance.

I noticed there was a bit of discussion as to how to snap _link / ramp roads to
the main highway.
The Telenav team uses the convention as described on the wiki, snapping to the
main road where the physical separation ends or begins. So the way you
described it yourself is the ‘right’ way, as endorsed by the wiki. (See
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dmotorway_junction
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway=motorway_junction> )

In general, our team follows the conventions as described on the wiki, and if
there’s no clear decision, we work with the community to reach one, and edir
the wiki afterwards.

I agree fully with your use of destination tags, but according to the wiki they
belong on the _link way and not on the junction node,
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:destination#Where_to_use.3F
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:destination#Where_to_use.3F>

Motorway junction nodes should be tagged even if there is no junction number
(not sure if those are common / signposted in Australia?) See again
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dmotorway_junction
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway=motorway_junction> The
destination should not go on junction nodes but on the _link road.

I have not used the placement=transition tag myself and am not sure how it is
used in applications, but interesting!

I hope OpenStreetCam (and also Mapillary) will continue to be useful. For
signposts and speed limits these are pretty much indispensable tools lacking
official GIS data that has this info. Telenav created and maintains
OpenStreetCam as you may know. I am happy to answer any questions about it that
you may have. We are planning to hold a few mapping competitions in the near
future for a few cities in Australia, I’ll make an announcement separately when
we’re ready to do that. (Early next year I think)

Another tool I’ve found really useful for checking complete / correct tagging
of motorways is CheckAutopista:
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/CheckAutopista
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/CheckAutopista> . For M5:
http://k1wiosm.github.io/checkautopista2/?id=7985811&lat=-27.5645&lon=152.8959&z=12

<http://k1wiosm.github.io/checkautopista2/?id=7985811&lat=-27.5645&lon=152.8959&z=12>

Folks used to use name_1, name_2 but this seems to be generally discouraged now.
There is also loc_name but the use of that has always been a bit unclear to me,
since local (posted) information should always be considered before anything
else.
For numbered highways you can also use the ref / network tag, especially if
‘Highway 666’ is not the posted name.
Wiki pages that are relevant:

* https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:name

* https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Multiple_values

I don’t know if there’s any local conventions that would trump this general
rule — I am not familiar with that, since I am not in / from Australia. Just
trying to help :)

[talk-au] Hello!

2018-11-07 Thread Martijn van Exel
I’m new on this list. My name is Martijn van Exel. I am Dutch but live in the
U.S.A. where I work for Telenav. I already introduced myself on Slack where I
talked a bit about Telenav looking at possibly helping improve the map in
Australia. I am just not sure if there’s folks here who are not on Slack so I
wanted to say hi. We’re not making any improvements yet and we will keep you
updated as our plans materialize.

We have a page on the OSM wiki that has more about how / what we typically work
on in OSM: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Telenav
<https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Telenav>

Please do get in touch with any questions!

Happy mapping,
Martijn___

Cool, getting my iPhone next week, so can't wait to try it out!

Is it listed on the OSM wiki yet?
