[OSM-talk] Size of installed Database?
Hello, i'm about to install the latest planet.osm and i'd like to install it on an SSD. The bzipped XML file is approximately 31 GB of size, but how much space will i need on an SSD for the PostgreSQL database? I haven't bought an SSD yet and i'd like to make sure that the database will fit on the SSD. It would be very kind if somebody could tell me how much size an installation takes on disk and how old their installation is (if it is not actual). Re: [OSM-talk] Size of installed Database?
I have my full planet database coupled with the flatnodes file on a pair of SSDs. One is 128GB and the other is 256GB and they're VERY close to not being large enough. I've got the rendering tables on one and the update (forget the proper names) tables on the other. I'm looking to swap out the 128GB with a 256GB and hopefully split the rendering tables between the spindles with the corresponding update tables on the opposite spindle. Munin (http://tinyurl.com/6v8lvvc) shows my gis database at 272GB, but that doesn't include the 18GB flatnodes file (that's growing steadily) for a total consumption of 290GB. From: torstenm...@schleim.mac.com [mailto:torstenm...@schleim.mac.com] Subject: [OSM-talk] Size of installed Database? Hello, i'm about to install the latest planet.osm and i'd like to install it on an SSD. The bzipped XML file is approximately 31 GB of size, but how much space will i need on an SSD for the PostgreSQL database? You haven't said you're using the XML file, but I'd suggest using the PBF instead. I haven't bought an SSD yet and i'd like to make sure that the database will fit on the SSD. It would be very kind if somebody could tell me how much size an installation takes on disk and how old their installation is (if it is not actual). I'm assuming you're asking about an osm2pgsql rendering database being updated with diffs. If not, some of the following concepts still apply, but numbers will differ. Because it's been awhile since it's come up, I figure I might as well go over osm2pgsql size in detail. The disk space required is governed by the size of OSM data, import options used, and database bloat. 1. Size of OSM data More data = more space. PBF is faster and smaller, but doesn't change database size. 2. Import options used If you're dealing with the entire planet, you should be using --flat-nodes as its faster and saves space. Flat nodes uses about the same space for an extract as for the full planet, so it's not worth using for small extracts. Aside from that, there's not much you can tweak to save space, except --drop. If you aren't planning on doing updates, use --slim --drop to get rid of the slim tables and save lots of space. hstore or a bigger .style will use more space 3. Database bloat Over time, data gets updated or deleted in the database. Postgres recovers this space with autovacuum, but the default autovacuum settings are not agressive enough. You want to adjust autovacuum_vacuum_scale_factor so it will autovacuum more frequently. autovacuum_analyze_scale_factor may also be adjusted. I use 0.04 and 0.02 for these. A second problem is index bloat. If you can tolerate the database locks, just do a REINDEX (or a CLUSTER). Otherwise, create a new index concurrently and then use it to replace the old index. You can do reindexing on an index-by-index basis Now, for numbers. It's important to remember that bloat changes size, so if you turn autovacuum off and import a year old planet then update it, you get a different size than if you import a fresh planet. Yevaud had a fresh planet imported 3 weeks ago. It is 263GB in-DB currently, with an additional ~20GB for flat-nodes. Of this, it is 60GB for slim data, 105GB for slim indexes, 76GB for rendering data, 19GB for rendering indexes and 1.6GB for non-standard rendering indexes. This gives you a total of 95GB for rendering, and an additional 190GB for slim. One additional caution is the import requires more space to do the CLUSTER. This leads to a few conclusions - If you don't need updates, use --slim --drop --flat-nodes and delete the flat nodes file to save lots of space, particularly during import - You probably want to run reindex every 1-3 months - If you want to update your database by reloading into a new DB and replacing the old DB with it, the additional space requirements during import vs. non-slim are modest (slim size - CLUSTER requirements for non-slim tables = ~60GB) - I'd recommend a 512GB class SSD with a new server if you want everything on a SSD. The OSMF rendering servers use 512GB 840 Pros. If you have less space, use tablespace options to split it up, particularly if doing rendering only and just need the slim tables for the import. - Tune autovacuum aggressively if you're short space ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Revisei agora essas sugestoes. Eu geralmente coloco as duas tags nesses casos. ___ Talk-br mailing list Talk-br@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-br -- Fernando Trebien +55 (51) 9962-5409 The speed of computer chips doubles every 18 months.
Desculpa a demora. Original Message Subject:RE: Old data based on Google imagery in Brazil Date: Tue, 27 Aug 2013 02:47:15 -0700 From: Paul Norman penor...@mac.com To: 'Wille' wi...@wille.blog.br CC: d...@osmfoundation.org From: Wille Sent: Monday, August 26, 2013 7:30 PM Subject: Old data based on Google imagery in Brazil The user Eduardo Francis Batista[1] was one of the most active contributors of OSM in Brazil [2]. Some days ago, the brazilian community detected that the data the user put in the OSM database is very similar with the data of TrackSource [3]. It's good to hear that the Brazilian community is watching for this. We do know that isn't allowed the insertion of data based on google satellite imagery. The problem is that a lot of people has made changes in the map and, if we revert the editions of Eduardo, we will lose the contributions of those people. I checked and now many of the cities mapped by the user has bing aerial imagery. Can we solve the problem just realigning the ways and areas with the bing imagery or the only solution for this case is to revert the changesets of the user? The right way to do this is not to revert or realign, but redact his contributions like was done with decliners in the license change. What the redaction bot does is split his contributions from other users. For example, if some other user added an amenity=resturant node and then Eduardo added a cuisine tag and moved the position than some other added a name the redaction bot would move it back to its old location, remove the cuisine tag and hide the old versions so they cannot be retrieved. Is there any way to tell what data he contributed that needs to be removed vs. anything original that isn't Google or TrackSource derived? It's obviously best to save as much data as can be kept to minimize map damage. ___ Talk-br mailing list Talk-br@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-br

[Talk-in] Moving place=village tags in Odisha
A large number of place tags in Odisha are imported from AND. Most of these tags are on nodes which are part of a way. The OSM wiki recommends to place a node at the center of a settlement and tag it appropriately. Can I remove such erroneous nodes from the middle of the way and move them to the settlement center? Most of these nodes are very close to the actual settlements. Hence, there is minimal confusion about where to place those nodes. Re: [Talk-pt] Mapping in Portugal - Some smal questions
Boa tarde Matthias, I'll try to answer the other questions : 1. I've no idea how Bing is accurate ;-) Note that there's probably a lot of data in Lisbon which where traced years ago from Yahoo! Imagery, so old data can be misaligned when compared to Bing. I expect Bing have made a good ortorectification, I hope some of ours GIS expert have some metrics in this matter. 2. The 'hard' rules for road classification in Portugal are : http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Estradas But you know, there's no such thing as hard rules in OSM ;-) Personally, I use highway=service for roads accessing amenity : fuel station, parking. For a road going around one or more buildings, obviously used only for those resident, I'll tend to classify it as highway=residential. 3. The Postal Code in Portugal are : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postal_codes_in_Portugal The first 4 digit was the old postal code, and the 3 digits following the dash is an even more precise area in this postal code. I don't know all the details and I didn't spend time searching, but I presume that the postal code follow the administrative area in some way, so it seems possible to follow the Karlsruhe schema and only code addr:street and addr:housenumber and deduce the city and postal code from other spatial entity. But we are far from it, we didn't have all the administrative area in OSM, it's a matter I'm currently working on (slowly :-). By the way, for the Karlsruhe schema, I've not seen a prefered way in the community on how to enter address : - using addr:street - using associatedStreet relation Perhaps you have more experience in entering address so we can choose a prefered method for Portugal. As a matter of taste, I prefer not using relation for address and using only addr:street, but that's my personal view ;-) http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/House_numbers/Karlsruhe_Schema One final question for Nuno José or someone with more pratical knowledge than me, in the example given I'm missing something, in Karlsruhe schema notation we have : addr:housenumber = 18 addr:street = Rua Pé de Mouro addr:postcode = 2714-510 addr:city = Linhó So the Sintra information will be lost ? Bing alignment The Bing imagery looks very good for my part of Lisbon. But as the area is very hilly, I'm not sure if it's well aligned? In Germany it's mostly ok, as we don't have that strong height differences, but I don't expect that BING had been postprocessed here, to fix that things? 2. Road classification I noticed that most smaller roads that I would classify as highway=service are mapped as resedential and with name instead. So I guess the requirements for service tag is even higher in Portugal? 3. Address format When I try to add the address from a LIDL superstore, there is at the bill: LIDLCia - LISBOA -AV. C:E:G Lojas Alimentares AV Cor Eduardo Galhardo, Lt A - Lisboar Rua Pé de Mouro, 18 Linhó - 2714-510 Sintra So I just add it like addr:street=Rua Pé addr:housenumber=18 but is there a postal code or something else? As you see, language seems to be my biggest problem, as I had to learn the usual terms for roads and places and the special characters of course. kind regards, Matthias -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://www.enigmail.net/ iQEcBAEBAgAGBQJSIcy8AAoJEAF+labaLeyDJikH/3ZKBeNpcgg7CECWmaIac0av DIJQQqq7jweiqZjPGurcLo/oQOtbUBwzVTKE4/27+Zi8H2BJFKNSKrBTPcYAWJA0 WcIxPk14rIZSpsz++ZPKPK/kwyVTC/sUrCfXzj4Il/rry7Bvfibc5afW8m9Yra94 as6DFj3VUFbK2vTuTTW5SQo6Tm/Ul9fZf/5v87WejkofgeVpxZa1jrVoHqjVQkb2 XJGlnKQJXVihLpE7hF7bC1zrPqtVLjJ3t9qIwQ+46y0Zg8VBDJjbJkHuj3WXLEAQ 2+zQ2fqFMutnRgTTCHvykjHXlzO7NYjMXHDLMXuLB9dfEQ9kOLsbcfzCDaQsdLw= =XE0s -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ Talk-pt mailing list Talk-pt@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-pt -- Nuno José Almeida ___ Talk-pt mailing list Talk-pt@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-pt ___ Talk-pt mailing list Talk-pt@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-pt
Re: [Talk-pt] Mapping in Portugal - Some smal questions
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I'd say that the postal code should include the location, the wikipedia page says: The Portuguese postal code (código postal) is formed by four digits, a hyphen, then three digits, followed by a postal location of up to 25 characters in capitals. If one searches for a postal code in the Portuguese post office page, which is also linked in the wikipedia page, one gets exactly the scheme mentioned (-NNN LOCATION). The wikipedia page also says: Note that, although the regions' names are connected the (extinct) 1936 provinces of Portugal, their limits (with the exception of Algarve) are not exactly the same. I don't know if this still holds true, also this year there was a reorganization of parishes (1), I don't know how that changes the relationship between administrative areas to postal codes but I suppose that should be taken into account/looked into. (1) Some parishes were merged and given a new name. That I know of there are no more changes planned in the short term, but I don't know if we've seen the end of it as the change was somewhat controversial. Re: [OSM-talk-fr] Comparaison OSM/Route500
-- View this message in context: http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/Comparaison-OSM-Route500-tp5775040p5775743.html Sent from the France mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-fr

Ryo-a 天野 Satoshi IIDA nyamp...@gmail.com wrote: いいだです。 Ryo-a 天野 Satoshi IIDA nyamp...@gmail.com wrote: いいだです。
[Talk-GB] Mapping Archaeology
Hi A friend of mine belongs to a local Archaeology group and they are going to do some surveying shortly using a variety of methods including ground penetrating radar. I thought it would be nice if somehow the results get put onto Open Street Map. Are buried walls and landscape features suitable for recording on Open Street Map perhaps at level -1? I have a feeling I saw something a while ago about a parallel open streetmap that was intended for archaeology and recording things that are no longer visible, but I have lost the link and can't find any references to the site. Re: [Talk-GB] Mapping Archaeology
Obviously the location of the site can be identified, and any excavations recorded. These are current facts. But I keep watching Time Team and thinking that all of the material they gather would make a good base for an historic view of the UK. Not sure where we are with the servers for the historic map, but in a lot of places the historic view breaks through into the current data! So the idea that this material is stored in the same database is in so many cases sensible? There is considerably less data that is totally lost to redevelopment against that which is now being preserved below that development? Being able to view what is actually recorded below that development would be an excellent next step? The openhistoricalmap is completely blank for me (both in Internet Explorer and Chrome), so I guess it hasn't taken off. It seems a shame not to add the data into OSM in some way assuming the group finds something. Do you know of any examples of areas where groups of Archaeologists (like Time Team) have added information into OSM? Whilst I mapped it using only the initial sighting on the ground, and OS OpenData (ignoring their PW), subsequently checking with other resources, they seem to have thought the lift motor room, for the hall, was a tower (Pathfinder Series) and missed the small spire on the church itself, even though the church is the larger, and more impressive, building. (I will recheck it on the ground, but nothing so far seems to contradict my initial mapping.) ___ Talk-GB mailing list Talk-GB@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-gb

Exactly why OS Street View should only be used as a guide, not gospel. Re: [Talk-GB] Mapping Archaeology
Open Historical Map is a sandbox environment and has only been around for a few months. It's far too early to write it off. A more reliable link is probably hosm.gwhat.com, but Jeff Meyer has been having problems with the servers recently, and it doesn't seem to up atm. It seems a shame not to add the data into OSM in some way assuming the group finds something. Do you know of any examples of areas where groups of Archaeologists (like Time Team) have added information into OSM? -- Date: Sat, 31 Aug 2013 09:04:45 +0100 Subject: Re: [Talk-GB] Mapping Archaeology From: ste...@stevenhorner.com To: a_sn...@hotmail.com CC: talk-gb@openstreetmap.org Was it http://www.openhistoricalmap.org you were thinking of? [Talk-us] Whole-US Garmin Map update - 2013-08-29
These are based off of Lambertus's work here: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl If you have questions or comments about these maps, please feel free to ask. However, please do not send me private mail. The odds are, someone else will have the same questions, and by asking on the talk-us@ list, others can benefit. Downloads: http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/2013-08-29 Map to visualize what each file contains: http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/2013-08-29/kml/kml.html FAQ Why did you do this? I wrote scripts to joined them myself to lessen the impact of doing a large join on Lambertus's server. I've also cut them in large longitude swaths that should fit conveniently on removable media. http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/2013-08-29 Can or should I seed the torrents? Yes!! If you use the .torrent files, please seed. That web server is in the UK, and it helps to have some peers on this side of the Atlantic. Why is my map missing small rectangular areas? There have been some missing tiles from Lambertus's map (the red rectangles), I don't see any at the moment, so you may want to update if you had issues with the last set. Why can I not copy the large files to my new SD card? If you buy a new card (especially SDHC), some are FAT16 from the factory. I had to reformat it to let me create a 2GB file. Does your map cover Mexico/Canada? Yes!! I have, for the purposes of this map, annexed Ontario in to the USA. Some areas of North America that are close to the US also just happen to get pulled in to these maps. This might not happen forever, and if you would like your non-US area to get included, let me know. -- Dave ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
