[OSM-talk] Editing help.openstreetmap.org / Question from Gnonthgol
Hi, over on help.openstreetmap.org, user Gnonthgol has posted the following in http://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/10799/why-are-opinions-removed-from-helposmorg: I have noticed that several personal opinions and discussions have been removed from this site. Is this an atempt to censor people or is there another reason? Deleting comments may show weakness of an indivitual who made such thing and can destabilize the community. Do we not have the freedom to express our own opninions? I have replied, on help.openstreetmap.org, with the following, but would encourage discussion on this mailing list rather than over on help: This is not a site for expressing opinions. Answers, and comments, should always be aimed at solving the problem at hand. Questions that solicit opinions instead of factual responses are off-topic (see FAQ link). I occasionally edit questions/answers or remove comments when they become too opinionated. For example, if someone writes: Why does x happen? I think that those who allow this to happen are really stupid! I would remove the I think.. sentence. Or if someone comments an answer with Your answer is really unhelpful and an example of the arrogant attitude of many people in this shitty project, I would remove that comment entirely. (If you a re unhappy with an answer you can vote it down, and arrogant/unhelpful answers will frequently be voted down by many people which is sufficient.) I also remove comments or even answers if they later turn out to be wrong ur unnecessary. For example, someone posts a question that lacks important information to give an answer; someone else comments please explain what you mean with x, then the original questioner enhances his question - this makes the comment redundant and it should be removed. I also think that we should do more editing of answers by consolidating the answers given by multiple people into one best answer that will help anyone who looks up something in the future; if someone makes a helpful comment to an answer, and that answer can later be extended to include that comment, then the comment can be removed. This is easier for later readers. This medium is less helpful if the reader has to browse 25 answers to get the whole picture! I hope (and believe) that others edit help.openstreetmap.org in the same way I do. Discussion and expression of opinion shold happen on the forums and mailing lists. I agree with you that all members of our community should be entitled to expressing their opinion in an un-censored way but the medium for that is forums and mailing lists (orc IRC if you prefer). help.openstreetmap.org is for help, not for discussion. I suggest that we discuss this on the talk mailing list. Bye Frederik ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
[OSM-talk] Mapping disused railway lines
I have been exploring my 'new' local area recently, and GPS surveying many roads that had been traced from NPE mapping and bore little resemblance to what is on the ground. But that is the easy stuff. My problem is that where one of these roads crosses the path of the disused Wellington to Market Drayton railway, there is a stone bridge over the road with a height restriction. For a working railway this is easy, but the disused railway tag seems to have no bridge attributes. I have added them, but no bridge has appeared on the map. Apart from the lack of rails, this line is very much in existence on the ground, with embankments and bridges still in place. Re: [OSM-talk] Mapping disused railway lines
If there are no rails perhaps there is a track (highway track) or even an informal path (highway path) running along the old trackbed. If there is you could add that, with bridge tags. I am not advocating tagging for the renderer, only tag what really is there. I had originally tagged it as bridge=generic bridge, but have now changed that to bridge=yes and had already included the tag maxheight=13'3. And can think of a few other bridges, on live railways that I need to revisit. In this case the sign is a triangular warning, with white lines on the the bridge to guide high vehicles through the centre of the arch. This is very much a development release and is missing what I view to be important features. mapbook can be found at https://github.com/pnorman/mapbook Features: It uses Mapnik's AGG-based renderer and should take any mapnik .xml file Adjustable resolution and paper size Uninteresting map pages may be skipped and omitted Has not exploded Dependencies Mapnik2 (may work with older versions with minor code tweaks) Python = 2.6 Cairo, pycairo Pango Pangocairo Notes: The user is responsible for inserting an appropriate copyright page for the map they are using Printing high-DPI maps can be both time and toner intensive Upcoming features: An index page feature for an overview of the area Headings The ability to tweak a specific page to expose the map under the border Cleaner code? A license for the code? A scale bar Known issues: Adjusting --firstpage and --blankfirst is confusing Some stylesheets use images for icons which do not work well at different resolutions (e.g. osm.org mapnik). [OSM-talk] Tile Drawer now plays nicely with TileMill
Hi, I've been quietly updating Tile Drawer (http://tiledrawer.com) over the past month, and I've introduced a few new ways that it can interact with TileMill (http://mapbox.com/tilemill). TileMill works especially well with shapefile data, so I've added a final step in the Tile Drawer setup process that generates fresh shapefiles of your selected area. You can use Tile Drawer as a data pre-processor for use with TileMill, essentially ignoring its rendering functionality and shutting down the virtual machine after it's finished cranking out a selection of zipped shapefiles in /usr/local/tiledrawer/progress. Oliver Tonnhofer's Imposm creates data especially well-suited for use in Tilemill, so I've made sure to include it in the process. In the other direction, you can now use your TileMill styles in Tile Drawer directly, as long as you stick to a specific shapefile naming scheme and provide a zipped copy of your Mapnik 2.0 XML stylesheet to the startup script. Re: [Talk-de] Defaultwerte in OSM
Man MUSS also hier den Default-Wert gezielt umdefinieren. Letzteres würde Taglisten wie bicycle=yes, bridge=no, cutting=no, embankment=no, horse=yes, foot=yes, highway=residential, ... ergeben. [Talk-de] bedingte Werte, was: Defaultwerte in OSM
-- Johannes Hüsing There is something fascinating about science.

Also: Anlieger frei = Zufahrt für jeden gestattet.
Ja Latvijas mērogā to izdomājam pieņemt: 1. One is a bicycle track/route I created few years ago, the other is a hiking trail/route imported later. Both merge near the Chemin Keenan bridge and share the same tracks/roads for 3 km. The hiking trail was drawn few meters offset even if it was not physically separated on the field. That is an interesting case. I'm not the mapper with local experience, so I'll defer to you. From my distance it seem that: Treating the trail / route as distinct from the road where it shares the road seems incorrect to me. We strive to represent a single object in reality with a single object in OSM. It appears that mappers have drawn two separate ways for the off-road portion of this trail as well. Are there two trails, or one trail, shared by cyclists and pedestrians? If there is only one 'highway' for both pedestrians and cycles, they should be merged as well. Tagging for the users can be done in several ways and is a matter of mapper preference. Each of these are correct: - highway=footway, bicycle=yes - highway=cycleway, foot=designated - highway=path, foot=yes, bicycle=yes - other variations The access restrictions, if true, are probably best left on a relation where they apply. It seems strange to me that cyclists would not need a permit for a path while hikers would require the permit. If those restrictions only apply to a portion of the hiking trail (on private property, perhaps) then perhaps the access restrictions should be moved to those ways, and leave the generic tags on the relation. Best regards, Richard For some of the variations on path tagging, see: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dcycleway http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dpath ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca

A virtual way that is only in place beside the actual way in order to have a hiking trail appear on a specific map rendering platform would be what is known as tagging for the renderer, which is frowned upon. Showing just one way which depicts the actual location of the way and tagging it appropriately is the correct action. While the information in this linked image from Google Streetview http://g.co/maps/33tg4 is not to be used when mapping, I'm just using this link as a visual indicator to show that there does not appear to be two distinct ways where the OSM map is showing that there are... Accurate information in that database is what should drive the actions of the mapper, not modified mapping techniques to try and make certain features appear on a specific map rendering solution. There is no mention of the map rendering engine/style that would effectively make the trail disappear from the map. Perhaps the use of a different map rendering engine/style sheet may alleviate some concerns. Have a look at how Freemap takes care of rendering multiple layers of types of ways... http://www.free-map.org.uk/freemap/about.html Remember that we are editing the OSM database, not just a single depiction of the data as displayed when processed by a single map rendering engine with a specific style sheet.

Re: [Talk-GB] New OOC OS 1:25,000 tiles (beta)
Now also available in extra zoom layers: z0 to z22 on OOC OS1, OS Streetview and Surrey Aerial Survey. WMS too is available, on a per request basis. / Grant On 24 February 2012 11:28, Andy Robinson ajrli...@gmail.com wrote: Thanks to Grant there is now a new beta version of the Out-Of-Copyright OS 1:25,000 mapping available currently viewable at http://faffy.openstreetmap.org/?zoom=6lat=54.46526lon=-2.50923layers=00B0 (note this address may change in the future). The process used is different from that currently visible at ooc.openstreetmap.org in that the maps are tiled and delivered by MapServer on the fly which means that the task of rectifying and tiling each map sheet isn't required, instead MapServer uses the georeferenced original TIFF scans. The main benefit to users now is that the whole of each map sheet is visible (the old method sliced off edge tiles for isolated sheets during the tiling process). I've added info for JOSM users on the wiki (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Provisional/First_Edition#JOSM). It needs testing in Potlatch and Merkartor . Note that the tiles are now png rather than jpg if you are simply making a server name change in the editor settings. The main benefit in the longer term is that the vast number of maps sheets donated by Glasgow University will be available much more quickly once they have been scanned. Mapserver has been set up to serve index colour tiles (to maintain performance) which may result in some sheets not being as colour rich as with the old tiles. This will be improved as new scans come online. To check out what the new ones should look like pan over to sheet TG41 on the Norfolk coast, especially in contrast to TG40 to the south of it. If you click the layer tab from the faffy map view you will also note that the latest OS Streetview and the Surrey County Air Survey are also being served by MapServer in the same way. Bear in mind that this instance of MapServer is still very much in testing mode so the facility may go offline at times. Re: [Talk-us] TIGER 2011 Road Tiles
Try again. I think it might have been spending too much time trying to render low zoom tiles. I've since put a limit so that it will only render zooms 16-19 over the US.
