[OSM-legal-talk] A license bot that has produced too many errors
The detrimental license bot now has reached Germany and promptly left a lot of errors here. Let's just look at one city, Göttingen in Northern Germany, where I have contacted some undecided users, so I have some knowledge about pre-bot history. There are so many errors with severe legal implications, so I would like to publish them on the legal-talk list. Their manipulated history is such a heavy infringement of Creative Commons license that even an agreer could easily sue the OSMF if he was willing to waste time and money on a senseless trial. Let me show the examples: - agreeing mapper's node disappeared http://osm.mapki.com/history/node.php?id=60580009 Version 3 of this node (51.5400973, 9.9564636) was last edited by agreeing user Sasude. By removing this precisely located node, an intersection of four streets was destroyed. - street has disappeared completely The southern part of Dahlmannstraße with bus route No. 6 has disappeared completely though it was last edited by agreers. - intersections were cut off - ODbL history ignores agreeing users http://osm.mapki.com/history/way.php?id=8091768 Both intersections were cut off though these nodes were last edited by an agreer. Undediced mapper Hotte Degoe has created an empty line without any tags. All tags were added by agreeing users, all points have been moved by agreeing users as well. Only v1 should be hidden, all other versions by agreeing mappers should be visible. - decliner included in ODbL history http://osm.mapki.com/history/way.php?id=60922724 Lobelt has declined the new contributor terms so far mainly for political reasons, but he still appears in the clean ODbL history because he has removed a senseless tag. Removing a tag does not constitute a copyright, but mentioning him in the history is an infringement of moral rights. v2 should be hidden. - OSMF Redaction Account claims to be the only author http://osm.mapki.com/history/way.php?id=8573909 Since the OSMF Redaction Account did not create any way, he cannot pretend to be the author of any way. This pretense is illegal according to Creative Commons and rude though legal according to new ODbL license. At least some human users should appear in the history. - ODbL history ignores too many agreeing users (2nd example) http://osm.mapki.com/history/way.php?id=8094092 Undediced mapper Hotte Degoe has created an empty line without any tags. All tags were added by agreeing users, all points have been moved by agreeing users as well. Only v1 should be hidden, all other versions by agreeing mappers should be visible. These seven examples are quite simple cases without any complications. I am sure that some of you will be able to find many more examples where the bot has made severe errors. Finally, let me give two suggestions for a clean and transparent transition: - OSMI should not ignore bot deletions Streets destroyed by the bot (e.g. Dahlmannstraße in Göttingen) disappear on OSMI, so there is no chance to check what the bot has destroyed, and why he did so. Human users usually deliberate before they delete an object, the bot did not deliberate at all. Please allow local users to check where the bot has completely destroyed a street. - Please make bot deletions transparent For a transitional period of several weeks, invisible versions of history should be visible with RED letters so that everybody can check whether the bot has hidden too much information. Hiding versions may be considered as breech of Creative Commons license, displaying them in RED letters until the final cut is definitely legal. As there are a lot of errors in the bot-generated history, it will still take some weeks or months until a clean license change can happen. 2008-2010 It took two years to write the license 2010-2012 It took two years to convince the community 2012-2014 It may take up to two years to achieve a clear license change Yours, with best regards OSM user #42429 ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

I'm sure we'll find a good way of displaying bot edits. I made a post about this on the dev list. Simply showing all bot deletions is not very helpful though, because there is no way to get rid of such markings even if the deleted data has long been replaced. I object to your choice of the word destroyed a street. The bot does not destroy streets. It just prevents data from being published. I activate now WIWOSM[1] on all language versions of Wikipedia that support the OSM-Gadget[2]. But it's still beta-status because it's not running on IE (we work on that.). WIWOSM is a project to highlighting objects that are described in the article by using the Wikipedia-Tag inside OSM. It would be nice we you can help to make the Wikipedia-Tags more popular. We have in the moment 168.000 Wikipedia-tags[3] in OSM but nearly 2 Mio. coordinates in Wikipedia, so there is a lot of work to do. Important is that the Wikipedia-Tag contains the language and the article. Later we can use this connection of both projects also for other features. WIWOSM is also active in the WikiMiniAtlas, which is the map that shows if you click on the little globe icon in e.g. the English Wikipedia. WIWOSM is a really neat project to show the extents and shapes on the map of the features described in the wikipedia arctivle, and not just a single point pin. Particularly for extended objects like rivers or routes this can be very useful. The WikiMiniAtlas version even allows for size comparisons, by allowing you to move around the shape of an object as an overlay to anywhere in the world. e.g. to compare California to the UK or London to Berlin So perhaps one of the projects of the week / month could be to wikify all of the major rivers, regions and any other objects that would be useful to highlight on the Wikipedia maps. It could even be a joint project between wikipedia editors and osm mappers. Hi Ok thanks to John I am starting the first baby step to using mkgmap so I have installed Java. It think it works as I am using JOSM and that worked. Downloaded a small sample file of the Walls area using OSM data extract as I could not as yet figure out the other option and borrowing Australia from another suggested site was a bit big in file size for me and I was hoping to avoid splitting at this stage working on the KISS principle. This created a Walls_test.OSM file. Now quite chuffed with progress but then came unstuck here with this command line instruction. java -jar mkgmap.jar --route --remove-short-arcs --add-pois-to-areas --index --gmapsupp *.osm.pbf Now this is were my newbie status shows in spades. Am I correct to assume that this is a DOS command line instruction? If it is I then get this error 'Java' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. Now and ice age of two has passed since I used DOS or Unix in anger and something tells me for java to be recognized it needs to be in a path. Ironically I would have a better chance of doing this in Unix than DOS as I once used .profiles extensively in Unix. Now if you have fallen off your chair laughing as this is not a command line instruction then please point me to what I should be doing. Also big hint on scripts would be good. I assume it might be a text file you write/steal/borrow? The idea is to create a MEM (Middle Earth Map for an Ent) just for Tassie at this stage with the zoom levels optimised for bushwalking. By that, big peaks and foot tracks showing up big time. Hi Brett, You've made remarkable progress in a very short time! I'm a Linux user rather than Windows, so I can be of limited help there. I can add to Steve's reply. Firstly, you need to convert that pbf file to an osm one. You use the osmosis program to do that. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Osmosis Here's the Linux script I run to turn the pbf file I download into the Garmin gmapsupp.img file. It's a routable road map for my Garmin nuvi car GPS unit. I also create a cycling-orientated map for my Garmin 60CSx. #!/bin/sh cd $HOME/OSM/mkgmap/style/work /usr/user/osmosis-0.39/bin/osmosis --read-bin $HOME/OSM/mkgmap/style/australia-oceania.osm.pbf --write-xml australia.osm /usr/bin/java -Xmx1400M -jar /usr/user/splitter-r181/splitter.jar --cache=/tmp --output=xml australia.osm rm australia.osm /usr/bin/java -ea -Xmx1400M -jar /usr/user/mkgmap-r1995/mkgmap.jar --remove-short-arcs --style-file=$HOME/OSM/mkgmap/style/roadrte --route --gmapsupp -c template.args mv gmapsupp.img $HOME/OSM/mkgmap/road rm *.* cd I hope it hasn't wrapped, and still makes Unix-sense. I've inserted blank lines for readability just in case. Note that I need to use the splitter because my australia.osm file is so large. The splitter creates a series of manageable (smaller) osm files. [Talk-de] Nachfrage OSMF Redaction Account - was tut der?

Was sind denn einfache Objektrelationen? [Talk-it] Garmin Nuvi 1440T e OSM: da dove cominciare?
From: Brian Prangle [mailto:bpran...@gmail.com] Sent: 17 July 2012 15:42 To: talk-gb-westmidlands Subject: [Talk-gb-westmidlands] Birmingham City Centre Bus Interchange Hi everyone: This Sunday 22 July all the bus routes and bus stops change in Birmingham to allow Corporation St to become free of buses prior to work on the Metro extension. This follows months of roadworks and temporary closures. Judging by the state of work today I shall be surprised if everything is ready. All the bus stops are changing name and there are lots of new ones being erected. Moor Street Queensway has already been dual directioned ( changed already in OSM). Some streets will have there one way direction changed and some will become pedestrianised. I've got a list and map of all the changes from a Centro exhibition bus so I can get the bus stops entered. I'm proposing to delete all previous naptan info where a bus stop has disappeared or moved. Bus route relations I shall leave to the experts, just deleting them from Corporation Street, Bull Street and any other obvious streets( except for the route I use regularly - the 37). Anyone want to help?
Trabalha razoavelmente bem. Nada disso. Ao fim de duas noites lá percebi. Estava à procura por Av. Liber... e apareciam-me umas quantas Av. Agora começa no Marquês?

Re: [Talk-lv] : zone:traffic=LV:urban
Tomēr izlasīju to proposal un diskusiju. 1) Vienalga vajag piešķirt papildus tagu katram ceļam. Tas nozīmē, ka tāpat vajag kaut kādā veidā to uzzināt, vai arī ieimportēt. 2) A traffic zone often bundles a lot of restrictions: not only maxspeeds for various vehicle types, but additional regulations depending on local law Vai tiešām Latvijā šādā veidā varam sagrupēt ceļazīmes? Var lūdzu piemērus, man kaut kā nenāk prātā. 4) Joprojām pieturos un piedāvāju masveida tagošanu at once: ar papildus tagu note=maxspeed imported - delete this note if changed Nosacījumi: Esošie maxspeed netiek aiztikti vispār.
