Re: [talk-ph] Philippine multilingual place names (English/native language)
In a lot of cases, I'm going with the "what locals call it" plus "official name" rule of thumb when using the name=* tag, aside from the numerous name:xx tags used in mapping the Philippines. Aside from Eugene's examples, another specific case would be Taal, Batangas where the street names in its poblacion area are appended with "Calle" instead of "Street". - Blog: http://ianlopez1115.wordpress.com/ OpenStreetMap/Twitter: ianlopez1115 Facebook: ian.lopez From: Eugene Alvin VillarTo: Jherome Miguel Cc: talk-ph Sent: Wednesday, August 23, 2017 11:10 AM Subject: Re: [talk-ph] Philippine multilingual place names (English/native language) On Wed, Aug 23, 2017 at 9:23 AM, Jherome Miguel wrote: It already looks important to have place names under the name= tag be bilingual or multilingual, not just in English, especially when taking regard speakers of native languages (Tagalog, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Kapampangan, Ilocano, etc.), and use of native. I want the name=* to use just a single name, defaulting to English as much as possible (since English is an official language of the Philippines) and avoiding Tagalog/Filipino because that is a sensitive issue outside of native Tagalog-speaking areas. The only time we will use non-native English names is when the native form is overwhelmingly used even in English texts such as in English news articles, English books, and English academic papers. For example, in practically every English news article about the Marcos burial issue, every news outlet used the name "Libingan ng mga Bayani" instead of "Cemetery of Heroes" or "Heroes' Cemetery". So name=Libingan ng mga Bayani is used. This goes for other places such as "Liwasang Bonifacio" (not "Bonifacio Park" or "Bonifacio Square" or "Bonifacio Plaza"), "Malacañang sa Sugbo" (not "Malacañang in Cebu"), "Paseo de Roxas" (not "Roxas Path"), "Zamboanga del Norte" (not "Northern Zamboanga"), etc. ~Eugene ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph
[talk-ph] Retagging Plantersbank/China Bank Savings branches (planned mechanical edit)
A few days ago, a proposal to rename Plantersbank branches to China Bank Savings branches was floated [1]. A subsequent announcement was later posted in this mailing list [2]. Affected areas: Places with a former Plantersbank branch. Based on an Overpass turbo query, there are 26 branches in OpenStreetMap [3] plus 12 branches that were renamed prior to January 2, 2017 [4]. Planned tagging schema for China Bank Savings (formerly Plantersbank) branches:amenity=bankname=China Bank Savingsoperator=China Bank Savings, Inc.old_name=Plantersbank Optional tagsatm=yesbranch= [name of branch] (if previously added)address tagsopening_hours= [time the branch is open] (if previously added) How will I edit: I got an OSM data extract of Plantersbank and selected China Bank Savings branches in many parts of the country via overpass turbo. I intend to create 8 changesets for this edit:* one for Mindanao (Davao and General Santos cities)* one for Visayas (Cebu)* one for Palawan* one for Southern Luzon (Laguna, Quezon, Batangas and Cavite)* one for Metro Manila and Rizal* three for Northern and Central Luzon (Bulacan and Pampanga; Pangasinan and La Union; Isabela) I also intend to add, change (is_in:*=* to addr:*=*) and remove some tags in the process (type=*, osm_id=*, designation=* among others) Planned edit date: January 11, 2017 Other details: The account ianlopez1115_mech [5] will be used for the first time, and the said account shall be subsequently used for other mechanical edits. Documentation for such edits will be posted in the this mailing list and OpenStreetMap Wiki [6]. Feel free to make comments/suggestions concerning my planned mechanical edits in this thread and other channels, such as the slack group [7] and the OSM Philippines Community Facebook group [8]. [talk-ph] Overdue Post-Mechanical Edit report (BDO)
In early July 2015, I made 32 changesets [1] that are part of the BDO Mechanical Edits. What I did: 1. Inform the mappers in the affected areas using this mailing list while simultaneously making a plan on how to manage the edits and publicizing them for comments and suggestions 2. Document my mechanical edits in the OSM Wiki 3. Make mechanical edits 4. Make a Post-Mechanical Edit report What I've noticed: 1. During the mechanical editing process, I forgot to add the operator tag on BDO branches in Pangasinan on the first changeset [2]. Thus, another changeset was created to rectify it [3]. 2. I also deleted some building polygons in Valenzuela City since they were duplicates of an existing building polygon [4] and that one BDO branch in Las Piñas was not included in the changeset for BDO branches in Southern Parañaque, Las Piñas and Muntinlupa [5]. The issue was then fixed in changeset 32537180 [6]. 3. I made a progress report midway through the mechanical edit, announcing its temporary suspension and resumption time and date [7]. The mechanical edits resumed at 4 PM (Philippine Standard Time) and ended at 4:44 PM on the said date. 4. Duplicate elements were also deleted in the changesets for the Visayas [8][9] 5. Similar to rebranded Allied Bank/PNB branches, there are cases that BDO branches have been relocated or closed. 6. The mechanical editing process encountered some difficulties, as mentioned in the mechanical edits update [7]. Other than that, the editing process went smoothly as planned. What can you do after the recent mechanical edit: 1. Do on-the-ground surveys to confirm if the BDO branches that I modified still exist, as branch relocations happen, as in the cases of the rebranded Allied Bank/PNB branches. 2. If you noticed that my mechanical edits do not correspond to the on-the-ground situation, do the following: 2.1 Message me to revert my mechanical edit for a certain branch or area. 2.2 Make the corresponding edits. Example: if a BDO branch is closed or relocated, mark it as such. To be done in future mechanical edits: 1. Notify users in affected areas at least 3 days before the planned mechanical edits through other means such as OSM inbox and the slack group since not everyone is a part of this mailing list. 2. Create a dedicated mechanical edits account, which was done on December 31, 2016 [10] [1] see https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Automated_Edits/Ianlopez1115#BDO_(June-July_2015) [2] https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/32324927 [3] https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/32324983 [4] https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/32326511 [5] http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/32330957 [6] http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/32537180 [7] https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/talk-ph/2015-July/005712.html [8] http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/32537353 [9] http://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/32537408 [10] https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/ianlopez1115_mech - Blog: http://ianlopez1115.wordpress.com/ OpenStreetMap/Twitter: ianlopez1115 Facebook: ian.lopez___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph

Now that the plan was mentioned, I'll be making further announcements on or before January 3, 2017. In addition, a post-Mechanical Update report concerning BDO branches in 2015[1] will be published on the same day. The mechanical edit will be done no sooner than on January 10, 2017 under a dedicated account to be created prior to the said date. [talk-ph] BDO Mechanical Edits update (quick progess report, some edits partially rescheduled rescheduled to July 10)
I've managed to make 17 changesets covering north and central Luzon and the western half of Metro Manila [1] on July 1. In one changeset, I deleted some building polygons in Valenzuela City since they were duplicates of an existing building polygon[2]. Due to what happened to changeset 32324927[3] (in which I forgot to add the operator tag in that changeset, fixed in changeset 32324983[4]), I postponed making further mechanical edits and made a manual review of the data intended for uploading. I also found out that I accidentally excluded the Las Piñas – Evia Daang Hari branch from the changeset for the Southern Parañaque, Las Piñas and Muntinlupa area[5]. It will still be part of the mechanical edits, but it shall be placed under the changeset for Cavite. The mechanical edits, which covers the eastern half of Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, will resume on July 10 between 11 AM and 1 PM. The mechanical edits will end before 4 PM on the same day (PHT). Since I wanted other members of the community to give their comments concerning the planned mechanical edit [1], I've decided to move it to Wednesday, October 30. The edits will be done between 12 PM and 6 PM. I'm aware that some branches will be closed because of the branch relocations connected to the merger. Re: [talk-ph] mapping the EDSA bus bays
A bus stop is usually identified by a pole, a shelter, a bus bay and/or a yellow zigzag line on the street. Fortunately, a bus bay fits the definition of a bus stop. It can be tagged as highway=bus_stop ref=A (if it is a bus stop for A buses) or ref=B (if it is a bus stop for B buses) or ref=C (if it is a bus stop for A and B buses). More info: The widely used approach is to place bus stop nodes off to one side of the highway way, so not with node being part of the way. This easily captures the important information about which side of the road the bus stop is on. [2] Also, A bus stop should be defined for each discrete location where buses stop. If there are two places where buses stop on either side of the road then two bus stops should be defined. So far I was able to finish several towns and also made further improvements [1, Zambales section]. The initial towns were easy to remap because most roads are V1 edits without names. I'm now moving my way to Olongapo and Subic Freeport Zone. This part will be harder to remap since some roads have names added by other users. These names will be removed because the original ways were tainted. I am sending this appeal to everyone if in case you added road names, please remap that section by removing the original nodes/ways and then add new nodes/ways including the road names. Blog and link to videos and slides here: http://www.harrywood.co.uk/blog/2011/10/10/sotm-talk/ The main message is that while some areas are getting enormous level of detail the coverage seems to be very uneven (slides 43 onwards). I think this is happening in some areas in the Philippine map. Some mappers are doing micro-detail mapping (I'm guilty myself) while in other places, data is barely updated if updated at all. Micro-detail mapping is good but it is very difficult for new mapper s to contribute to these areas leaving the impression that is is already complete. Should we go for detail or even coverage? I am primarily responsible for renaming a stretch of road between Calamba and Pila as the Calamba - Santa Cruz - Famy Junction Road. I based it on online documents from the Department of Budget and Management and/or the Department of Public Works and Highways[1]. I support the motion that the stretch of road from Famy to Victoria be renamed as the Manila East Road. However, I'm not in favor in temporarily renaming the remaining stretch (Pila - Calamba) as the National Highway, pending the confirmation from local and/or national authorities confirming/verifying the name of that road - for now. However, there is an item on page 15 (same document mentioned by Rally), describing a portion of the soon-to-be renamed road (on OSM) as the Calamba-Los Baños-Bay Diversion Road [2] [1] http://www.dbm.gov.ph/Details2010/DPWH/DPWH.pdf [2] it is also mentioned in a tweet from MERALCO re: Maintenance - http://www.twitlonger.com/show/6g53u3 Tony Montana: Me, I want what's coming to me. I tried opening the file last year in Merkaartor but my old laptop couldn't handle the data. Now that I have a 4GB-RAM laptop, loading the data into Merkaartor is very manageable. Using the PGS coastlines is much, much easier than tracing Landsat by hand. I tried this with Homonhon Island and editing is way faster than actually uploading it[3]. Hehehe. What I did was to delete the SRTM-derived coastline[4] and replace it with the PGS coastline[5]. I think uploading the PGS coastlines is better for the smaller islands. Metrowalk-Ortigas Home Depot: http://sautter.com/map/?zoom=17lat=14.58647lon=121.06578layers=B0TF Yahoo's satellite imagery in this area predates the large retail construction here so it would be nice if we can map this new development. Re: [talk-ph] Kalayaan Group of Islands boundary
Thee is a chance that a possible edit war *could* happen, but it would be best if the editors from the other countries add the claims of their home countries (within the Spratlys). The downside to it is that it can be confusing due to overlapping claims. At least it's better than a possible revert-remove other claims-add own claims edit war. BTW, I was planning to extend the boundary to the Scarborough Shoal (which is considered as part of Philippine territory due to geographical proximity, clamied by China due to its historical importance) and Island of Palmas area (not part of Philippine territory per a decision of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 1928), but I think that that's too much (for now). And it's more clear that Sabah and the Palmas area are no longer parts of Philippine territory (in my opinion). PS: I could add a boundary (with admin_level=6) around the islands in the Spratlys that are controlled by the Philippines, since Kalayaan is al municipality in Palawan. As Eugene discussed below, rural roads are different. I think we should use the track and tracktype tags for most rural roads. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dtrack http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:tracktype As for highway=unclassified, I don't see this of much use in the Philippines. Unclassified is a legal UK road type and not some road we don't know the proper class. Unclassified No administrative classification. Unclassified roads typically form the lowest form of the interconnecting grid network. Note: This is not a marker for roads where we still need to choose a highway tag (see highway=road for roads that require classification). These values should also be considered relative to local traffic patterns. This means that levels will be different in an urban and rural setting: a trunk in Metro Manila does not have to be equivalent in function to a trunk in Nueva Vizcaya. Here are some descriptive interpretations I might suggest (subject to discussion): trunk (rural) : long-distance route to traverse across provinces primary (rural) : mid-distance route to travel between towns in a province secondary (rural) : major streets within rural towns tertiary (rural) : major streets within areas of rural towns unclassified, residential (rural) : other roads in rural towns trunk (urban) : long-distance route across the metropolis primary (urban) : major road within a metropolitan city secondary (urban) : mid-level road within a metropolitan city tertiary (urban) : minor road in a metropolitan city unclassified, residential (urban) : other roads in metropolitan cities I'll admit that I have no fixed idea as to how to tag roads such that relative functional importance within Metro Manila (Cebu, Davao) is consistent when you get outside Metro Manila (Cebu, Davao). The problem is that in urban areas, the road density is so high such that we need to differentiate the roads a lot, whereas in rural areas, the density is low. For Metro Manila, EDSA and *parts* of C-5 are definitely trunk. Commonwealth, Quirino (QC) and McArthur Highway are arguably trunk. Quezon Avenue-Espana, Aurora-Marcos Highway, Ortigas-Ortigas Ext., Quirino (Manila), and Roxas Blvd are not so clear. What do you guys think? Yes, we can join forces. But I'm not familiar with some routes in and around the Philippines. We can use keep right (http://keepright.ipax.at/) and OSM Inspector (http://tools.geofabrik.de/osmi/) to check for data inconsistencies, like duplicate nodes in a way, unconnected ways (or ways that are supposed to be connected but aren't connected or improperly connected), etcetera.
