Re: [talk-ph] Philippine multilingual place names (English/native language)

2017-08-23 Thread ianlopez
In a lot of cases, I'm going with the "what locals call it" plus "official
name" rule of thumb when using the name=* tag, aside from the numerous name:xx
tags used in mapping the Philippines. Aside from Eugene's examples, another
specific case would be Taal, Batangas where the street names in its poblacion
area are appended with "Calle" instead of "Street".

[Oops. Sent too early.]
So in essence, you want to propose something like what is done in Belgium?
I don't agree. I want the name=* to use just a single name, defaulting to
English as much as possible (since English is an official language of the
Philippines) and avoiding Tagalog/Filipino because that is a sensitive issue
outside of native Tagalog-speaking areas.
The only time we will use non-native English names is when the native form is
overwhelmingly used even in English texts such as in English news articles,
English books, and English academic papers. For example, in practically every
English news article about the Marcos burial issue, every news outlet used the
name "Libingan ng mga Bayani" instead of "Cemetery of Heroes" or "Heroes'
Cemetery". So name=Libingan ng mga Bayani is used. This goes for other places
such as "Liwasang Bonifacio" (not "Bonifacio Park" or "Bonifacio Square" or
"Bonifacio Plaza"), "Malacañang sa Sugbo" (not "Malacañang in Cebu"), "Paseo de
Roxas" (not "Roxas Path"), "Zamboanga del Norte" (not "Northern Zamboanga"),
etc.

[talk-ph] Retagging Plantersbank/China Bank Savings branches (planned mechanical edit)

2017-01-01 Thread ianlopez
A few days ago, a proposal to rename Plantersbank branches to China Bank
Savings branches was floated [1]. A subsequent announcement was later posted in
this mailing list [2].
Affected areas: Places with a former Plantersbank branch. Based on an Overpass
turbo query, there are 26 branches in OpenStreetMap [3] plus 12 branches that
were renamed prior to January 2, 2017 [4].
Planned tagging schema for China Bank Savings (formerly Plantersbank)
branches:amenity=bankname=China Bank Savingsoperator=China Bank Savings,
Inc.old_name=Plantersbank
Optional tagsatm=yesbranch= [name of branch] (if previously added)address
tagsopening_hours= [time the branch is open] (if previously added)
How will I edit: I got an OSM data extract of Plantersbank and selected China
Bank Savings branches in many parts of the country via overpass turbo. I intend
to create 8 changesets for this edit:* one for Mindanao (Davao and General
Santos cities)* one for Visayas (Cebu)* one for Palawan* one for Southern Luzon
(Laguna, Quezon, Batangas and Cavite)* one for Metro Manila and Rizal* three
for Northern and Central Luzon (Bulacan and Pampanga; Pangasinan and La Union;
Isabela)
I also intend to add, change (is_in:*=* to addr:*=*) and remove some tags in
the process (type=*, osm_id=*, designation=* among others)
Planned edit date: January 11, 2017
Other details: The account ianlopez1115_mech [5] will be used for the first
time, and the said account shall be subsequently used for other mechanical
edits. Documentation for such edits will be posted in the this mailing list and
OpenStreetMap Wiki [6]. Feel free to make comments/suggestions concerning my
planned mechanical edits in this thread and other channels, such as the slack
group [7] and the OSM Philippines Community Facebook group [8].

[talk-ph] Overdue Post-Mechanical Edit report (BDO)

2017-01-01 Thread ianlopez
In early July 2015, I made 32 changesets [1] that are part of the BDO
Mechanical Edits.

What I did:
1. Inform the mappers in the affected areas using this mailing list while
simultaneously making a plan on how to manage the edits and publicizing them
for comments and suggestions
2. Document my mechanical edits in the OSM Wiki
3. Make mechanical edits
4. Make a Post-Mechanical Edit report

What I've noticed:
1. During the mechanical editing process, I forgot to add the operator tag on
BDO branches in Pangasinan on the first changeset [2]. Thus, another changeset
was created to rectify it [3].
2. I also deleted some building polygons in Valenzuela City since they were
duplicates of an existing building polygon [4] and that one BDO branch in Las
Piñas was not included in the changeset for BDO branches in Southern Parañaque,
Las Piñas and Muntinlupa [5]. The issue was then fixed in changeset 32537180
[6].
3. I made a progress report midway through the mechanical edit, announcing its
temporary suspension and resumption time and date [7]. The mechanical edits
resumed at 4 PM (Philippine Standard Time) and ended at 4:44 PM on the said
date.
4. Duplicate elements were also deleted in the changesets for the Visayas [8][9]
5. Similar to rebranded Allied Bank/PNB branches, there are cases that BDO
branches have been relocated or closed.
6. The mechanical editing process encountered some difficulties, as mentioned
in the mechanical edits update [7]. Other than that, the editing process went
smoothly as planned.

What can you do after the recent mechanical edit:
1. Do on-the-ground surveys to confirm if the BDO branches that I modified
still exist, as branch relocations happen, as in the cases of the rebranded
Allied Bank/PNB branches.
2. If you noticed that my mechanical edits do not correspond to the
on-the-ground situation, do the following:
2.1 Message me to revert my mechanical edit for a certain branch or area.
2.2 Make the corresponding edits. Example: if a BDO branch is closed or
relocated, mark it as such.

To be done in future mechanical edits:
1. Notify users in affected areas at least 3 days before the planned mechanical
edits through other means such as OSM inbox and the slack group since not
everyone is a part of this mailing list.
2. Create a dedicated mechanical edits account, which was done on December 31,
2016 [10]

2016-12-30 Thread ianlopez
Now that the plan was mentioned, I'll be making further announcements on or
before January 3, 2017. In addition, a post-Mechanical Update report concerning
BDO branches in 2015[1] will be published on the same day. The mechanical edit
will be done no sooner than on January 10, 2017 under a dedicated account to be
created prior to the said date.
[1] this report will be similar to the post-Mechanical Update report concerning
former Allied Bank branches that became PNB branches after their merger in 2013

Follow-up:
Here are also Overpass API queries:1. Overpass API query for Plantersbank
branches named "Plantersbank"2. Overpass API query for Plantersbank branches
named "Planters Bank"
The latter is, however, has most instances, excluding instances named "United

renamed "UCPB", per current branding, that is evident in signage.

Last day, I sent a message to ianlopez1115 regarding a proposal to retag all

Chinabank, Plantersbank started its merger with China Bank Savings (CBS), a
Chinabank subsidiary. I already made some retagging of Plantersbank branches in
Metro Manila (in this changeset and the following one), but for most edits,
they will to be done as mechanical edits by ianlopez1115, using a dedicated
account.
While I started the first edits in JOSM, using Overpass API queries, I will not
do every edit here. Ianlopez1115 will handle the rest of the retagging edits,
but it will be discussed here on talk-ph first, and documented on this page on
the OpenStreetMap Wiki. before the edits will be done, as that will be an
automated edit. Stay tuned for updates regarding my proposal I sent to
ianlopez1115 about retagging all Plantersbank branches to China Bank Savings
branches, if he agreed.

[talk-ph] BDO Mechanical Edits update (quick progess report, some edits partially rescheduled rescheduled to July 10)

2015-07-08 Thread ianlopez
I've managed to make 17 changesets covering north and central Luzon and the
western half of Metro Manila [1] on July 1. In one changeset, I deleted some
building polygons in Valenzuela City since they were duplicates of an existing
building polygon[2].

Due to what happened to changeset 32324927[3] (in which I forgot to add the
operator tag in that changeset, fixed in changeset 32324983[4]), I postponed
making further mechanical edits and made a manual review of the data intended
for uploading. I also found out that I accidentally excluded the Las Piñas –
Evia Daang Hari branch from the changeset for the Southern Parañaque, Las Piñas
and Muntinlupa area[5]. It will still be part of the mechanical edits, but it
shall be placed under the changeset for Cavite.

The mechanical edits, which covers the eastern half of Metro Manila, the rest
of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, will resume on July 10 between 11 AM and 1 PM.
The mechanical edits will end before 4 PM on the same day (PHT).

I use overpass turbo to retrieve the BDO branches data but I manually review
them and make edits through JOSM. So, it's more or less a semi-automatic method
of editing.

[talk-ph] Imagery update (April 2015)

2015-04-02 Thread ianlopez
Today, I noticed that the Los Baños, Laguna area has new imagery (taken on
January 8, 2014). Unfortunately, many parts of Laguna (San Pedro, Nuvali,
Canlubang, San Pablo, Santa Cruz, Nagcarlan), southern Metro Manila (from NAIA
downwards), central and eastern Cavite and parts of western Quezon (Candelaria,
Sariaya, Lucena) are no longer covered by Bing aerial images.
I wonder if there is a way to request for new Bing aerial imagery, especially
for areas that recently lost coverage.

[talk-ph] PNB/Allied Bank Mechanical Edits update

2013-10-26 Thread ianlopez
Since I wanted other members of the community to give their comments concerning
the planned mechanical edit [1], I've decided to move it to Wednesday, October
30. Also, three changesets will be created in Metro Manila instead of one as
originally planned (one for Manila, one for CAMANAVA, Quezon City, San Juan and
Marikina, one for Mandaluyong, Pasig, Pasay, Makati, Taguig, Pateros,
Muntinlupa, Parañaque and Las Piñas). The edits will be done between 12 PM and
6 PM.

I'm aware that some branches will be closed because of the branch relocations
connected to the merger. It is up to the users in the area to check if the
affected branches are closed or relocated and edit the map to reflect such
changes.

[talk-ph] Allied Bank branches are now PNB branches (planned mechanical edit)

2013-10-21 Thread ianlopez
A few days ago, I noticed that an Allied Bank branch nearest to my place is now
a PNB branch. I believe that the changes are part of a plan to integrate
operations between PNB and Allied Bank after the merger[1].Thus, the need for a
mechanical edit to make the needed changes.

Affected areas: Places with a (former) Allied Bank branch. Based on an Overpass
turbo query, there are 123 branches in OpenStreetMap[2] (one branch in
Tagbilaran, Bohol is now mapped as a PNB branch).

Planned tagging schema for PNB (formerly Allied Bank) branches:
amenity=bank
name=PNB
operator=Philippine National Bank
old_name=Allied Bank

Optional tags
atm=yes
branch= [name of branch]

How will I edit: I got an OSM data extract of Allied Bank branches in many
parts of the country via overpass turbo. I intend to create five changesets for
this edit (one for Visayas and Palawan, one for Mindanao, one for Metro Manila,
two for Luzon). I also intend to add, change (is_in:*=* to addr:*=*) and remove
some tags in the process (cmt=*, desc=*, designation=*, sym=* among others)

Right now, the satellite tiles are available to paid mapbox users, but
OSM users can use the tiles for tracing:

[talk-ph] dyan888 edits

User dyan888 made a lot of edits in the Quezon City area. Unfortunately, s/he
deleted housenumber information and other POI's in this changeset [1], removed
a U-turn slot in this changeset [2] and adding info that is already on the map
[3]. As of now, I'm in the delicate process of undeleting/fixing the affected
elements (and sending him/her a message regarding his/her edits once I'm done
with the cleanup).

Re: [talk-ph] mapping the EDSA bus bays

2012-12-19 Thread ianlopez
A bus stop is usually identified by a pole, a shelter, a bus bay and/or a
yellow zigzag line on the street. Fortunately, a bus bay fits the definition
of a bus stop. It can be tagged as

highway=bus_stop
ref=A (if it is a bus stop for A buses) or ref=B (if it is a bus stop for B
buses) or ref=C (if it is a bus stop for A and B buses).

More info: The widely used approach is to place bus stop nodes off to one side
of the highway way, so not with node being part of the way. This easily
captures the important
information about which side of the road the bus stop is on. [2] Also, A bus
stop should be defined for each discrete location where buses
stop. If there are two places where buses stop on either side of the
road then two bus stops should be defined. [2]

[talk-ph] Planned import: 7-Eleven Branch data

2012-10-04 Thread ianlopez
I'm planning to import location data of 7-Eleven branches nationwide in the
coming weeks.
Based on a file that I found on the Internet Archive Wayback machine,
the location master containing the name of its branches and location ID's (and
other unrelated data)[0] is (presumably)
licensed under CC BY 3.0 PH. However, I'm not sure of its current
status. It would be best if we send an email to Philippines Seven
Corporation regarding this matter.

If imported, a typical 7-Eleven branch will have the following tags:

name=7-Eleven
shop=convenience
opening_hours=24/7
branch=(name of branch in the location master)
ref=(location ID of branch)
source=(to be discussed)

OSM database

Hi guys,

I propose to delete the imagery coverage outlines that are currently
in the OSM database (most are tagged with the special
outline=imagery tag). Since we already have an imagery coverage
map[1], I think that there's no longer any need to retain these
outlines in the database, especially since they clutter up editing,
are inadvertently joined to streets and roads by users, and they don't
correspond to anything real on the ground and therefore do not really
belong in the database in the first place..

If there's new imagery, we just trace the outlines and then I can take
them and merge them into the coverage map.

What do you think?

It seems Microsoft went on a satellite imagery shopping spree! :D

There's also new imagery covering General Santos City all the way to
Davao del Sur. I haven't traced the outline yet.

 2. Here's the outline along the western coast of Central Mindanao:

 3. Here's the outline covering eastern Misamis Occidental and western

I haven't checked out the exact age of the imagery but how new? Well,
the imagery in Cotabato City shows the construction site of the Sultan
Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Masjid, which is the Philippines' largest
mosque. Google Maps' satellite imagery of Cotabato is older.

Before anyone tries to remap the area, please check first who added the name/s
first. If an agreer adds the name, add it. If not, remove it and let a local

Subject: [talk-ph] status of re-mapping Zambales

Dear everyone,

Just an FYI that I am remapping sections of Zambales [0].  Most of the
V1 edits were made by a non-agreer.  I tried several times to contact
this user (hellodeck), but I got no response so I consider his/her
contributions fair game and can be removed and then remapped.

So far I was able to finish several towns and also made further
improvements [1, Zambales section].  The initial towns were easy to
remap because most roads are V1 edits without names.  I'm now moving
my way to Olongapo and Subic Freeport Zone.  This part will be harder
to remap since some roads have names added by other users.  These
names will be removed because the original ways were tainted.

I am sending this appeal to everyone if in case you added road names,
please remap that section by removing the original nodes/ways and then
add new nodes/ways including the road names.  I will get back to this
section of Zambales in a few weeks and start re-mapping, I apologize
in advance to those who have edited this area in case you find your
contributions removed and replaced by new data.

Eugene also defined level's of detail here:

I'm interested in visualizing this kind of metric.  What would be the
best initial unit? A municipal boundary? a square grid? etc?

Admissions aside, I think that we should have a tier/level for a more even
 coverage
Tier/Level 1: Major highways, large rivers
Tier/Level 2: Minor highways, enclosed waterways (lakes, lagoons)
Tier/Level 3: Buildings, landuse, small rivers and streams
 Tier/Level 4: POI's (amenities and shops)
Tier/Level 5: Picnic tables, individual trees, wastebaskets, lamp posts

Example: If one mapper in a certain area maps at least 60-70% of elements
needed in Tier/Level1, he can go on to mapping 60-70% of elements needed in
Tier/Level 2, and so on. It doesn't mean that  everyone has to follow it,
but at least we have some guide/idea on what to map first.

Subject: [talk-ph] mega-micro-detail or even coverage?

 Hi,

A very interesting talk by Harry Wood last SOTM2011 (I was on the
other room presenting State of the PH during that time).  Blog and
link to videos and slides here:
 http://www.harrywood.co.uk/blog/2011/10/10/sotm-talk/

The main message is that while some areas are getting enormous level
of detail the coverage seems to be very uneven (slides 43 onwards).  I
think this is happening in some areas in the Philippine map.
Some mappers are doing micro-detail mapping (I'm guilty myself) while
in other places, data is barely updated if updated at all.
Micro-detail mapping is good but it is very difficult for new mapper s
to contribute to these areas leaving the impression that is is already
 complete.

Should we go for detail or even coverage?  Where do we draw the line?

2011-02-08 Thread ianlopez
I am primarily responsible for renaming a stretch of road between Calamba and
Pila as the Calamba - Santa Cruz - Famy Junction Road. I based it on online
documents from the Department of Budget and Management and/or the Department of
Public Works and Highways[1]. I support the motion that the stretch of road
from Famy to Victoria be renamed as the Manila East Road. However, I'm not in
favor in temporarily renaming the remaining stretch (Pila - Calamba) as the
National Highway, pending the confirmation from local and/or national
authorities confirming/verifying the name of that road - for now.

However, there is an item on page 15 (same document mentioned by Rally),
describing a portion of the soon-to-be renamed road (on OSM) as the
Calamba-Los Baños-Bay Diversion Road [2]

On Item No. 9 (page 3) of Senate Bill 740 (as proposed by Manuel Villar) dated
June 30, 2004
it describes MANILA EAST ROAD as
(Cainta-Taytay-Angono-Binangonan-Morong-Cardona-Famy-Victoria Road)

http://www.senate.gov.ph/lisdata/19301337!.pdf

If Villar's researchers (for this senate bill) were correct, then it is safe to
say that M.E.R. includes Ortigas Ave Extension (as I originally suspected,
basing on a construction signboard by DPWH I saw last year), and it extends up
to Victoria, Laguna. The rest of the road back to the City of Calamba can
temporarily be known as National Highway (until after we know the official name)

I'm not very sure if I properly tagged the relations.  The Tanong and

So a week to go, I know there's a planning page, but I get the feeling nothing
is going on if its not posted in some feed, blog, or mailing listing recently :)

So what do we need to be ready for the mapping party?

Any ideas for a final location?

I have been concentrating on Samal Island in the Davao Gulf just offshore from
Davao City and have done a few farm roads around Davao on the mainland.  Samal
Island only had a few roads on the map but I have been able to add most of the
existing roads.  Most is dirt track roads - even the main highways so I do most
by driving my old Land Cruiser and using the tracks from the GPS.

I do have a problem that maybe somebody can help me with.  Access to Samal
Island with a vehicle is via vehicular ferry. I have tried may ways to define
the ferry route but no matter what I do the GPS will not navigate if I select a
destination that includes crossing from the mainland to the island or visa
versa.  Can anyone suggest what to do?

I have been in Hong Kong for a few weeks but hope to get back to Davao in a
week or two and continue with the map.

 Hi guys,

Once we are done with the large islands, the next step is to do the smaller
islands. Ian Haylock has helpfully provided the PGS coastlines[1] for the
Philippines last year[2] which he edited to combine ways. PGS itself was
automatically generated by a software by analyzing the Landsat imagery.
Unfortunately, Ian's file was hosted on a free file server and has now
expired but I think several people on the mailing list managed to download
 it.

I tried opening the file last year in Merkaartor but my old laptop couldn't
handle the data. Now that I have a 4GB-RAM laptop, loading the data into
Merkaartor is very manageable. Using the PGS coastlines is much, much easier
than tracing Landsat by hand. I tried this with Homonhon Island and editing
is way faster than actually uploading it[3]. Hehehe. What I did was to
delete the SRTM-derived coastline[4] and replace it with the PGS
 coastline[5].

I think uploading the PGS coastlines is better for the smaller islands. I'll
see what we can do to have the PGS coastlines (55MB) uploaded somewhere.

Re: [talk-ph] Micro Mapping Party in Ortigas-Mandaluyong on May 22

2010-05-15 Thread ianlopez
I've suggested other areas that are close enough but not too far from the
Ortigas area

1. EDSA-Pioneer-Boni Avenue intersection:
http://sautter.com/map/?zoom=17lat=14.57255lon=121.0472layers=0BTF
There are new developments in the area, specifically in the Pioneer side
(Robinsons Cybergate, Light Residences, Pioneer Woodlands)
2. Area between Boni-Pionner intersection and Kapitolyo:
http://sautter.com/map/?zoom=17lat=14.57297lon=121.05339layers=0BTF
The streets are complete, but it lacks POI's, buildings and landuse.

Maybe one of us should hand out OSM fliers to passers-by [if they're
interested] (

Hi guys,

I really don't think we could push through with the Corregidor Mapping Party.
Planning was mostly nonexistent and I don't think many people are willing to
spend a large
amount of money for the ferry trip and the possible overnight stay in the
hotel on Corregidor. Let's postpone that island for a while.

In the meantime, I suggest we tackle parts of Metro Manila that are still
incomplete:

1. Mandaluyong-Shaw area:
http://sautter.com/map/?zoom=17lat=14.58246lon=121.04721layers=B0TF

This area of Mandaluyong is still missing a lot of streets because they are
covered by clouds in the Yahoo satellite imagery.

2. Ortigas CBD:
http://sautter.com/map/?zoom=17lat=14.58448lon=121.05964layers=B0TF

In contrast to the Makati CBD, Ortigas is still pretty blank in its building
coverage.

3. Metrowalk-Ortigas Home Depot:
http://sautter.com/map/?zoom=17lat=14.58647lon=121.06578layers=B0TF

Yahoo's satellite imagery in this area predates the large retail construction
here so it would be nice if we can map this new development.

One nice thing about this is that these three areas are near each other and
since this is Ortigas, meeting up would be easier.

And after the on-the-field surveying, let's meet up after and have that newbies
tutorial session that Carlos suggested.

What do you guys think? :-)

Eugene

Re: [talk-ph] paete handicraft stores and art galleries

2010-04-07 Thread ianlopez
I've been to Paete approximately same time last year (but not in that area).
Sure, you can add those things on the map. For roads that aren't submerged at
the time of your trip, here are my suggested tags:

Foot only - highway=footway; foot=yes
Foot and bicycle (with and without side car) - highway=cycleway
Foot, bicycle and motorcycle (without side car) - highway=pedestrian
Foot, bicycle, and motorcycle (with side car) - highway=living_street
Passable by car - highway=residential

For access restrictions, go to http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:access

I also made a few tweaks in the area, per my observations in the area (Paete
Poblacion)

no_left_tern restrictions are implemented along the Ayala-Gil Puyat

Re: [talk-ph] Kalayaan Group of Islands boundary

2010-03-16 Thread ianlopez
Thee is a chance that a possible edit war *could* happen, but it would be best
if the editors from the other countries add the claims of their home countries
(within the Spratlys). The downside to it is that it can be confusing due to
overlapping claims. At least it's better than a possible revert-remove other
claims-add own claims edit war.

BTW, I was planning to extend the boundary to the Scarborough Shoal (which is
considered as part of Philippine territory due to geographical proximity,
clamied by China due to its historical importance) and Island of Palmas area
(not part of Philippine territory per a decision of the Permanent Court of
Arbitration in 1928), but I think that that's too much (for now). And it's more
clear that Sabah and the Palmas area are no longer parts of Philippine
territory (in my opinion).

PS: I could add a boundary (with admin_level=6) around the islands in the
Spratlys that are controlled by the Philippines, since Kalayaan is al
municipality in Palawan.

Ian has started adding the US-Spain-UK border treaty limits around the
Sabah-Spratly Islands area: http://osm.org/go/4lauR

Do you think this would invite edit wars from other OSMers in countries that
also claim some or all of the Spratlys?

In addition (warning: geeky), the border treaty limits were stated via
geographic coordinates but in an unspecified geographic datum. Do you think
these are applicable to the WGS84 datum we are using?

Marikina has a separate health center, botika (pharmacy) and police
precincts, usually located within the barangay hall complex but
separate from other barangay amenities. Nice.
Question: What tag for barangay health centers?  Which is not really a
hospital or doctor/s.

Thanks!

The tunnel should be tagged as highway=construction; construction=primary.

Regarding Granada, it is either a two-way road or a one way road heading
northboun). I've passed through Doña Hemady, and it is a one way road heading
northbound.

tutubi,

I'll try to explain a few things re: editing in potlatch.  I'm also
forwarding this to the list so that others can chime in.

If the road is already a oneway, there should be a tag oneway=yes.  To

Not sure how to edit this, I'm not familiar in that area.

Kingston St in Novaliches with intersecting Quirino Highway should
 be Kingspoint St
Simply correct the name tag.

Quirino highway, to get to Mindanao Avenue should turn right, U-turn
 due to the construction
of the underpass and the NLEX connection due to be finished soon

the road going to Manila Memorial Holy Cross is named E. Dela Cruz, to
be updated, and the routing there wanted me to take a sidetreet to
Katupunan (don't know where that street is).

If this doesn't exist, delete it.  Or perhaps this is a footway and
not passable by car?  I suggest you hunt this street to verify. :)

I'll try to correct these things later when I have time as well as
learn how to do them myself. I need to learn how to tag a road as
one-way and also road as alley.
For roads use primarily for foot traffic, you can tag it as
highway=footway or highway=pedestrian

PS. Reports like this is very useful in improving the data. Salamat!

[talk-ph] Adding content on the OSM Philippines Blog

2010-02-26 Thread ianlopez
I think that the OpenStreetMap Philippines blog needs more content, and it
needs to be tweaked. The about text on the right side of displays the default
text (the Lorem ipsum one), while the about page is still in default.

What the OSM.PH blog needs is content. Especially HOWTOs that aren't covered
(yet) by the OSM Wiki. I recently added a rough guide on which sites can be
placed on key:website or website=* here (
http://ianlopez1115.wordpress.com/2010/02/26/limits-on-key-website/ ), and I'm
planning to write a guide on getting (useful) data from phone booths and how to
add it on OSM.

For those who may not know the site, it is at http://openstreetmap.org.ph/blog/

I suggest we wait for the sysadmins for a while.

They have revert scripts:

Re: [talk-ph] changes of road types

2010-01-22 Thread ianlopez
Maybe we should describe unclassified roads in the Philippine context as roads
within verified and/or urban areas that are of mixed use (commercial, retail,
industrial, residential, farmland), while the residential roads can be
described as a road in either urban or rural areas that are within areas that
are classified as mostly residential. The road tag can be used for roads that
have no actual road types, as proposed/planned.

Hi,

With the advent of more sat images outside Metro Manila I would like
to re-visit this discussion regarding road classes in rural areas.
As Eugene discussed below, rural roads are different.  I think we
should use the track and tracktype tags for most rural roads.

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dtrack
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:tracktype

As for highway=unclassified, I don't see this of much use in the
Philippines.  Unclassified is a legal UK road type and not some road
we don't know the proper class.

Unclassified
No administrative classification. Unclassified roads typically form
the lowest form of the interconnecting grid network.
Note: This is not a marker for roads where we still need to choose a
highway tag (see highway=road for roads that require classification).

For people tracing from sat images but are unsure of the actual road
type please use highway=road

For comments.

cheers,
maning

I suggest that the tags for
 highway=trunk,primary,secondary,tertiary,unclassified be considered as a
function of traffic patterns and not of DOTC designation nor physical
 appearance or condition.

These values should also be considered relative to local traffic patterns.
This means that levels will be different in an urban and rural setting: a
trunk in Metro Manila does not have to be equivalent in function to a trunk
 in Nueva Vizcaya.

Here are some descriptive interpretations I might suggest (subject to
 discussion):

trunk (rural) : long-distance route to traverse across provinces
primary (rural) : mid-distance route to travel between towns in a province
secondary (rural) : major streets within rural towns
tertiary (rural) : major streets within areas of rural towns
unclassified, residential (rural) : other roads in rural towns

trunk (urban) : long-distance route across the metropolis
primary (urban) : major road within a metropolitan city
secondary (urban) : mid-level road within a metropolitan city
tertiary (urban) : minor road in a metropolitan city
unclassified, residential (urban) : other roads in metropolitan cities

I'll admit that I have no fixed idea as to how to tag roads such that
relative functional importance within Metro Manila (Cebu, Davao) is
consistent when you get outside Metro Manila (Cebu, Davao).

The problem is that in urban areas, the road density is so high such that we
need to differentiate the roads a lot, whereas in rural areas, the density is
 low.

For Metro Manila, EDSA and *parts* of C-5 are definitely trunk. Commonwealth,
Quirino (QC) and McArthur Highway are arguably trunk. Quezon Avenue-Espana,
Aurora-Marcos Highway, Ortigas-Ortigas Ext., Quirino (Manila), and Roxas Blvd
 are not so clear.

 What do you guys think?

I'm not objecting but I'm somehow curious about recent
reclassifications of several major roads lately:

 1.  Portions of Commonwealth from trunk to primary:
 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=14.66209lon=121.06976zoom=15layers=B000FTF

 2. Mindanao Ave from primary to trunk:
 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=14.67085lon=121.03234zoom=15layers=B000FTF

 3.  Some parts of Quirino are either primary or trunk:
 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=14.69974lon=121.03273zoom=15layers=B000FTF

 4.  MacArthur Hiway from primary to trunk:
 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=14.6755lon=120.982zoom=15layers=B000FTF

If we follow this trend, then I think Roxas Blvd should also be trunk as
 well:
 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=14.53551lon=121.00028zoom=15layers=B000FTF

Which means Metro Manila roads will be a whole lot

What is the correct tag for a subdivision, is it hamlet or village?

Some contributors are using hamlet, while the others are using village.

To be searchable in a Garmin map via POI or City, what are the other tags that
needs to be added? (e.g. is_in:city etc.)

Sorry for the trouble guys.

Re: [talk-ph] make the philippines routable

2009-12-24 Thread ianlopez
Yes, we can join forces. But I'm not familiar with some routes in and around
the Philippines. We can use keep right (http://keepright.ipax.at/) and OSM
Inspector (http://tools.geofabrik.de/osmi/) to check for data inconsistencies,
like duplicate nodes in a way, unconnected ways (or ways that are supposed to
be connected but aren't connected or improperly connected), etcetera. That way,
we can achieve our goal: to connect Philippine cities with each other and to
improve OpenStreetMap's coverage and routability in the Philippines.
