2007-04-25 Thread Alexander S. Kunz
Hello everyone,

I decided to leave the Windows platform, and therefore I'll not be
using TheBat any longer (and I want to add that TB indeed was one of
the programs which were reason enough to stay with Windows that long).

Thanks for all the good time, and see you on TBOT. :-)

I will unsubscribe from the TB lists shortly after sending this
message, I'll be reachable via PM in case someone wants to finally tell
me that all my bugreports suck. ;-)

Have a nice day!

Missing section IMAP Finetune in the helpfile

2007-01-11 Thread Alexander S. Kunz
Hello everyone,

I recently changed my email account to IMAP, and I found that TB has an
extra option in the section Mail Management labelled IMAP finetune,
but its not described in the helpfile. I'd like to know what these
option do, is there a collected description of these items somewhere?

And should I report the missing part of the helpfile in the BT?

Usage of the BT editor

2006-12-30 Thread Alexander S. Kunz
Hello everyone,

I've searched the net and the mantisbt homepage but I couldn't find
information about the possible commands for the bugtracker editor
(maybe I've not been searching hard enough).

I know that I can use #bugnumber to directly link to a different bug,
but I found it out only by accident. It seems that people are running
into this problem quite regularly, especially when referring to other
bugs, and (trying) to post URLs (which get broken by the editor at
command characters).

Is there a *user* documentation somewhere, or could someone post the
basics here? I found an (external) mantis-quickstart-generic.pdf but it
does not cover the notes editor either.

Thanks...

Macros that work with address headers have always worked like that. They
do not overwrite the existing contents of the header, but append to it.
It is always the safest to first clear the existing header (e. g. with
%TO= as Roelof explained), and then write a new one.

If you have an address book entry for the list, you don't need to set

I am mystified as to what hide items if not explicitly selected,

You can think of AB groups as being virtual folders, only for the
address book. The AB entries are part of the general address book (and a
single entry in the AB), and (maybe) part of one or more AB group(s),
too (an AB entry can show up in multiple AB groups).

When this option (hide items if not...) is checked, TB does not show
entries that belong to an AB group in the general address book (e.g. the
default Personal Address Book), but only when you explicitly select
the AB group. When the option is NOT checked, TB will show the entries
in the general address book, even if they are (also) part of an AB
group.

FWIW I have unchecked the option for all of my AB groups (it helps me to
avoid duplicate entries in the AB with the usual confusion of
multiple/wrong templates). That way, when I want a complete overview of
all the addresses in my address books, I click on the general address
book (Personal Address Book here).

Merry christmas to you everyone else, too! :-)

the SMTP client should and could supply a resolvable name. Expecting
that is nonsense, and a server that does a DNS query if the name is not

The other thing is that supplying a local ie. non-resolvable IP address
doesn't change anything. If the IP or the name is non-resolvable doesn't
make a difference, does it? But privacy-wise and security-wise it does
make a difference whether the client's local IP address is revealed. So

Horizontal scrollbar disappears in threaded view when threads are really deep and the thread is collapsed

2006-11-18 Thread Alexander S. Kunz
Hello everyone,

this is a rather old bug but I couldn't find it documented anywhere.

https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=6074

--- cut ---

When a really deep thread is completely expanded, a scrollbar appears
and the message list scrolls sideways to follow the subject column.

If you collapse the thread now at a very early message, the scrollbar
disappears, but the message list is not reset to be left-aligned. The
cursor keys scroll the message list sideways, but there's no way to do
that with the mouse.

The screenshots provide examples for the behaviour. In
msglist-expanded-with-scrollbar.png everything is as it should be. In
msglist-collapsed-no-scrollbar.png you can see that the scrollbar has
disappeared, but that the messagelist is not correctly left-aligned (the
subject column is cut off on the left side).

Problem decrypting PGP messages from AppleMail/GnuPG

2006-11-14 Thread Alexander S. Kunz
Hello everyone,

I have a contact that uses AppleMail together with GnuPG to encrypt his
messages to me. However, I can not decrypt his messages in a way that
allows me to read them in TB afterwards.

When I click on the decrypt button and enter my passphrase, TB opens a
file requester instead with the Save attachments as... title. When I
want to read the message I have to save it to disk and open it from
there. Quite a nuisance when you're regularly exchanging mails...

I'm using TB with GnuPG.

This does not happen with another contact who is also using an Apple
computer - but with Eudora and PGP9.

The only noticable difference in these two messages I can is the
content-type header. The one from the working message has LFs:

Content-Type: multipart/encrypted;
protocol=application/pgp-encrypted;
boundary=PGP_Universal_150AA4B9_647C0F42_12D3212E_A10EC31D

The one that is not working has no LFs:

Content-Type: multipart/encrypted; protocol=application/pgp-encrypted;
boundary=Apple-Mail-1-449897387

Is anyone with an AppleMail/GPG user as a contact able to verify this,
or can anyone give me a clue what might be the reason for this odd
behaviour (I'm not really sure if it is the content-type header that is
causing this problem).

Thanks...

Indeed. If you do not download all the headers, you can't determine
which messages where previously downloaded.

What's the exact mechanism that TB uses to decide what messages have

I think so. The files account.m_d and account.m_r are used for that,

Yes. Shouldn't make a difference if a program automatically issues the

how many messages are on the server, and then use TOP msg n to retrieve
the headers of msg only (and not all of them!) and n lines of the body.

OK, you'll get a beer! ;-)

Just think about the mail dispatcher. That does the same thing. Apply
different stuff to different messages. That would be done here, too.

But Peter's problem with the mail dispatcher is that it downloads all
message headers prior to selecting a few to download and as Roelof
pointed out, the message headers may be a major portion of the entire
data that needs to be transferred.

With TOP msg n you could retrieve just a selected number of the message
headers - and the MD contains an option that makes use of that command
(download n number of the message body with the headers) already.

installed as 3.85.03 which is the MSI of the latest stable release. I

Whats really interesting #2 - I just started TB in the admin account (by

Well you are right, but I had only glanced down into the message body
and seen that the greeting said Hello ssis, so I put my sister's
name in there. Only then did I glance up and see in the To field only
the one word ssis. As I told before, I did a back-space, tabbed
 down, the address went in,

I just tried to reproduce this. Even when I move into the message editor
and haven't made any changes (not a single keystroke) and then go back
to the header pane to change the TO field, the new template is applied.
Maybe you accidentally typed something (even if its only one letter +
backspace to delete it again).

You're correct. But both you and Paul are missing the issue that is
 meaningful to me, here.

Oh, I understand the problem, but I see no way around it. Either the
already existing message body (if any changes were made) is preserved,
or the template is applied again, clearing the editor window.

Maybe there should be some sort of notification window, something like:
Warning - the TO address uses a different message template than the one
that was initially applied. Do you want to discard any changes in the
editor and apply the new template? YES/NO

 Alex, I thought I wrote clearly, but I guess I didn't:

Ah. I have overlooked that detail. I see it now in the paragraph you
wrote, but it was difficult for me to spot it. :-)

I simply won't use the handle function any more. A great loss of
convenience for me, of course. But, security over convenience every
time, in my hierarchy of priorities.

Maybe you should just change your way of handling things like this. As
Paul said, simply start over again with a new message where you're sure
you typed in the correct handle. Or add some subtle change in the
signature, greetings, or somewhere else in the template that uses
encryption, so that you have a visual confirmation that you're indeed
sending the message encrypted.

I thought some sort of over-ride for addresses with %ENCRYPTCOMPLETE
in their templates over addresses without that macro might be
 possible to code.

That would require to sorta classify the macros. I can't really say if
this is a convenient way to handle this issue, since the personal
preference of users may differ, and the last thing I need would be
another configuration dialogue to classify the macros (just thinking the
idea to the end).

Maybe there should be some sort of notification window, something
like: Warning - the TO address uses a different message template
than the one that was initially applied. Do you want to discard any
changes in the editor and apply the new template? YES/NO

Oh, I would be very pleased, even to have that much protection!

Maybe the other members of the list should chime in here so that
eventually a reasonable wish can be formed out of this.

Re: Threading Issues

on 27-Sep-2006 at 13:46 you (Steven P Vallière) wrote:

this one where everyone is using the same email program).

Try to use threading by reference and subject (combined). Press ALT+5 in
the messagelist to activate it, or by reference alone (ALT+1). Its not a
cure-all, but usually better than threading by subject alone.

Threading by reference fails when there are no references. Crappy
webmailers like hotmail, aol and whatnot simply leave out these headers.
Outlook 2003, when sending directly over an ISPs smtp server, even
leaves out the message-id. You can't possibly thread these messages
correctly.

These mailers are RFC-ignorant, but as long as the RFC only says
should and not must in the specs for references and in-reply-to
headers (as well as the message-id), there's not much to do about it but
re-thread the wrongly or un-threaded messages.

I'd like to suggest/request an option for the threading model to
either do whatever it is doing now (for those who like it) *OR* to
have it skip over all known forms of the 're' prefixes. Perhaps even
allowing the user to specify a regular expression for what constitutes
the various types of 're' prefixes that are to be ignored when trying
to match subject lines for threading.

Add a supporting note to this wishlist item, please:
http://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=5152

Also note that some of the threads contain messages from DIFFERENT
 THREADS!

If threads contain different messages, its usually not because TB makes
an error here, but because the users are too ignorant. When they want to
write a new message, they choose the reply function instead (because
they are too lazy to type in the list address, for example) and most of
them are completely unaware of these references headers - they don't
know that, even if they change the subject, the reference to the
original message is still part of the reply.

Notifying those people about their irritating behaviour is like being
Don Quixote fighting the windmills.

You can always re-thread messages (was implemented in some v3 of TB):
drag drop a message onto a thread to re-thread it, shift-drag to
un-thread it.

Yes, I noticed that too. That was one of the main reasons I always
used IMAP to connect to our Exchange server rather than MAPI. I'm
guessing from what you are saying Alexander that these options are not
 relevant and are ignored?

I wasn't sure, and as I certainly didn't want to empty my exchange
mailbox with thousands of messages in it, I checked keep messages on
the server before I continued.

This installer screen should be fixed/adapted really, its really a FUD
creator, to say so.

Deadlock in Eval mode with IMAP

2006-09-22 Thread Alexander S. Kunz
Hello,

I just thought I'd it (connect TB with IMAP to a local Exchange server)
another try.

Installed TB in evaluation mode. Entered IMAP login data but made a typo in the
account credentials (username). Forgot to start the IMAP service on the
Exchange server. Stopped TB and went to the Exchange system manager and started
the IMAP service.

Restarted TB. The Evaluation message pops up, and is overlayed by the IMAP
account login window! This login window apparently has the attribute always on
top. You can't even move it. I can't see the buttons of the evaluation message.
See attachment.

So, I blindly clicked on something, and maybe I got the correct button, but
still, I could not type anything into the IMAP account login window, all I get
is the Windows error sound, and thats it. Three finger salute to the task
manager, and kill the TB process. Theres *nothing* I can do now to start TB
without this deadlock situation appearing.

If this would've been my first try with TB, it would be the point where I
uninstall the program and forget about it forever.
