Personally,I would think twice before qualifying someone or his/her

I'd like to add the description of a "quirk" or two I've observed with
the MT (and it annoys me no end).

You get no reaction when double clicking on the "n new messages"
section of the ticker. You get no response from the system-wide hot
key to open the MT VF when the ticker is short, the "n new messages"
section is visible, the first message details aren't entirely
on-screen.

Oh? If there are any messages in the MT, these are new, and these
should be listed in the virutal folder that opens. Of course, I have
set my MT to "show automtically", so if there are not new messages,
mine won't show.

If you have set your to "show always" (see Option / Mail Ticker in the
main menu), then it will also show with "0 messages new", and no
virtual folder will open. (It would be empty anyway.)

Therefore, try double-clicking on the MT when there are new messages.

AL> Sounds like not every new message is announced in the MT??

Correct. In the folder options, you can choose not to show new
messages in the mail ticker. Most people will use the mail ticker for
personal messages (considered urgent), but disable it for folders into
which they receive newsletters or mailing list traffic.

Well, usually new messages are unread (unless any filter changed
that) :-) but you are right, it's a difference.

It's one of those features I like as it is but others surely have
different opinions. If the icon behaved the way you suggest it, I
could never be sure if there are no unread messages or if the bat
just accidentally had the focus some time ago.

Actually the icon animation draws attention to the fact that there are
UNREAD messages, which is not quite the same thing, especially if, like me,
you tend to not read all messages as soon as they come in.

The icon animation would be a lot more useful if it did actually work in the
way you suggest. One possibility would be for the icon to animate only if
there are new messages since the last time TB had focus. Perhaps the
developers will take notice

Sorry for giving you wrong information the last time. It turns out
that the "HTML Document" type controls only a file with .htm or
.html extension. It has nothing to do with clicking on a URL in TB
(or any applications). I thought it's controlled by the "URL:

Re[3]: New Browser window (shift double-click)

2001-02-25 Thread Dave Braze

Hello Dave,

Okay, I've figured out how to add the OpenNew action on Netscape running
under Win95b. Unfortunately it doesn't help at all with the
shift-double-click idiom (within TB) failing to open a new NS window. Here
are the steps I took to get there.

1. Open an explorer window, go to view>options>filetypes
2. Find in the list of registered file types, find "Netscape Hypertext
Document" and select it
3. Click the "Edit" button
4. Click the "New..." button
5. Name the action "OpenNew"
6. Specify the NS exe on your system for "application used to perform
action:"
7. tick "use DDE"
8. DDE message should say "[open("%1", 0x0)]" without the outermost quotes
9. Application should say "NSShell" without the quotes.
10. Topic should say "WWW_OpenURL" without the quotes.
11. done

Having done this, I now have an "OpenNew" option on the context menu
(right-click menu) for html documents in windows exploerer, and it works
like you'd expect, but my original problem still exists inside TB.
Shift-double-click on a hypertext url does not open a new browser window.

I guess I'd like to ask if there are any NS users out there for whom the
shift-double-click idiom DOES work? Will you step forward to help figure out
what the problem is? Thanks.

-Dave

So you say that the flapping wings of the bat will attract
attention? You see, that's exactly what they are made for. The
flapping wings are supposed to draw the user's attention to the
fact that there are new messages. If you don't like this design,
you can turn it off, it's just that simple. And all the others
can use it as new mail notification.

I don't think your message was stupid, but TB's icon animation
serves as a new message indicator (it flaps only when there's new

Double-click on the MT. A View folder window opens, which contains all
unread messages that are announced in the MT. This folder view is
"virtual", as there is no single folder containing all these messages:
they are across folders.

I believe that has been available since Becky 2 was in betas. But
it's not what I want. With TB's full-width preview pane, I still
have the 3-pane layout intact, with the message list and account
tree in view. With Becky, I'll lose the other two panes when I
maximize the preview pane.

When I'm reading through mailing list with many messages, I like
TB's folder view best--with message list on top and message body at
the bottom. The account tree is gone, so the message list can have
the full width of the window to accommodate more information. It's
not available in Becky.

In News, only XNews offer similar arrangment. Agent and Gravity
don't.

How did you do your backup--with TB's backup tool or not? TB's
backup tool seems to facilitate only all-or-none restoration (I've
never tried, so somebody please correct me if I'm wrong here). If
you choose to restore mail folders, it would restore all mail
folrders -- of course by overwriting existing ones.

If you did it manually (with an archive utility, backup utility, or
plain file copying), then you may just restore the Inbox directory.

If you used TB's backup tool, then you may copy all your mail
folders to another location with your file manager (when TB is
closed), and copy all other folders except the Inbox back after the
restoration.

What I meant was that you can select which folders new messages to
display. I have my ticker configured to display new messages that
arrive in only some and not all folders. You can further restrict the
messages displayed by using the message age criteria.

Not quite. When there are, say, 25 new messages, it takes some time
until a particular message comes around again. In fact, my main use
for the ticket is that I can see while sitting in front of the TV
whether new messages have come in - my PC is some 10 meters from the
sofa, and my eyes are not good enough to see the bat flapping it's
wings. Quite a waste of programming power, one would think, but hey,
at least it's not disabled. ;-)

I use the virtual folder occasionally, but only if there are only a
few new messages. I don't like to read new mail across folders; I read
all messages in one folder, then proceed to the next.

That I did not question. :-) I just replied to your query about
telephone rates. And I think my way of using (or actually not using)
the MT answered that.

I don't get that much - some mailing lists less ;-) - but I see your
point. that's why I filter and have other folders. Concurring with

The ticker also allows you to view only particular new messages as

Although this isn't a fix for your Yahoo problem, but may I suggest
setting up an account with OperaMail... www.operamail.com who offer free
POP3 access. Just subscribe to a Mailing List you are already subscribed
to via your Yahoo address, and notice the difference in speed between the
two Servers. That is how I started out when I was having a problem with my
@Home Servers. As of this moment, I have subscribed to *all* my Mailing
Lists under OperaMail, and am so happy I did.

The Account is super easy to set up via the Web Page, and when setting up
the Account here in TB!, simply use operamail.com for both your SMTP and
POP3 Server names. That is all there is to it, and you won't be sorry. It
may take a little effort to get everything moved over, but the effort will
be rewarded.

That's they way you use it. I have used it to not think of looking up
"What's new". What I mean is: Being connected always I can work - yes,
I do that - and when new messages come (let's assume every half hour
TB! checks for them) I just see them, can decide if I am interested,
look at them or go on working.

I am not much interested in the virtual folder. If I want to have all
my new mail in one folder I would just not filter them automatically
and leave the "Inbox" open (19 inch monitor). After having read I can
then filter manually.

As Thomas pointed out some days ago in another context: Everybody has

Lurking & learning.

2001-02-25 Thread Ronald J Clark

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hello TB! Users & Moderators,

In a recent thread, Thomas <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made the
following comment:

"This list is a user discussion list. Many TB users lurk around here
and help each others. :-) "

This statement made me feel somewhat guilty insofar as I'm always
lurking, but contributing nothing. What Thomas said is especially
true in my case. I have received enormous help off list from another
 list member. Thanks Brian C.

My sole purpose for this post is just to thank the moderators and
many list members who have provided me with so much usable
information, as to make many of my questions unnecessary to post. I
look forward to the day that I am competent enough using TheBat! to
contribute and possibly help another list member. I have much to
 learn.

 Thanks to all,

 Ron.

What have telephone and internet rates got to do with the ticker? It's
not an "on-line" facility you know. It's just a virtual folder which
is filled with pointers to all new mail.

Are you sure? I would say: setting a mail-client there tells
IE/Netscape which program is to be used when clicking on a link in the
form of mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] on a web-site.
If there is no reaction when clicking on a link inside the
_mail-client_ then there is a problem with the setting of the default
_browser_. AFAIU.

Alexander

2001-02-25 Thread Alexander Levenetz

Hello everybody having troubles using GMX,

>> When I use GMX's SMTP server, I just set TB to POP before SMTP.

What you should do nowadays is under Properties - Transport
- SMTP-Server - Authentication, check "Perform SMTP Authentication"
and leave it to "Use settings of Mail retrieval". You don't need to
check "POP before SMTP". Then under your Pop-server you should have
your user-number rather than your GMX-Email-address and of course your
password. You do not need to change anything at the GMX web-interface.

And most important:

Be aware that your Email-address under Properties - General _MUST_ be
your GMX-Address!! If not, you will never be able to use the
GMX-SMTP-server. Also, make sure that any address set individually for
a folder must also be your GMX-address. This is just one reason why
*I* don't use the GMX-SMTP-server - I have multiple personalities ;-)

Greetings,
Alexander

Go to the FAQ file: www.silverstones.com/thebat/FAQ.html and read
about Netscape and a program called nsproto. If you have further

No, I mean files type, as in ".html", ".shtml" and so on. Do you have
some background in computing or operating systems?

Ouch!!

The only thing that could possibly save you is an application with an
undelete feature (anyone have any of these utilities to suggest?). It
will search your disk for deleted stuff and, just maybe, your deleted
folders have not yet been overwritten by other stuff.

Are you clicking or double clicking. With TB! you have to double click
on the links. If you're double clicking and things are still not
working, go into the Windows control panel and open the internet
options. Go to the 'programs' tab and check if 'The Bat!' is selected
under the 'e-mail' option. If not, select it and apply the change.
That should do it.

This problem could easily have nothing to do with your setup. These
free services tend to be problematic at times.

J> By the way, I am not all that clear on what happens after I send
J> this. Does it go to the main discussion group and someone answers
J> if and when they have seen this;

Each member is sent a copy of the message. If they read it and wish to
reply, they post their response which is again distributed to all
members.

Browser Problems

2001-02-25 Thread Jan

Hello Thomas,

Thanks for responding.

I'm using Netscape 4.75. I do double click but nothing happens.
Email hyperlinks open up theBat to send messages, but nothing happens
when I need to go online.

Thomas, when you asked "what file type is associated with my browser
in Windows", I'm not clear on what you mean. Do you mean theBat file
types? Or some other file type?

The last two days or so we had a thread about backing up the TB!.
There were 2 or 3 very good ways to do so. I strongly recommend that
you take a look at the archives (Archives:
), subject was at least "A backing-up
story".

Make sure that your browser is set as the default browser. This
problem seems to come up if one has installed several browsers whereas
none really is the default browser if it is not clearly set to be so.

Are they still on the harddsik? If not, they are probably gone. It is
always better to make regular updates, and especially when you
reinstall the software.

with your browser in Windows, it should work. BTW, what browser is
that?

Haven't heard anything, but my free webmail providers (gmx and kimo)

is going to be extremely annoying. What do I do?

Lastly, these problems all started because I was having difficulty getting
mail from my Yahoo! account. Everything was working fine, but
yesterday for some unknown reason, theBat would not download them to
my desktop. I have asked Yahoo! for help but have not received a
reply. I asked my ISP if they started blocking external mail

Well, what ever the prob is, look at the archives where I elaborated a

(and enter my password every time I fetch or send mail), for the
moment the MT is not that important to me.

Adding in a side note: I really like the feature and will use it some

You don't have to change anything through their web interface. When
GMX implemented SMTP authentication I checked this in TB! and never
did anything on the web. And it worked. Then someone posted that you
have to change the option at GMX, well, I did, and it works still.

Conclusion: Doesn't actually matter what you check or uncheck on the
