Re: thebat 1.60 and ssl/tls
Hello Bob, Seems the mail server you're trying to connect to uses only Cipher: RC4-SHA in it's SSL/TLS implementation. I don't know which Ciphers are supported by The Bat!, but I'd guess, from your error message, this one ain't :-/ A correct answer can only be given by RIT directly so maybe you want to drop them a note directly ... Why folder templates are dangerous (was Re: Clarification requested on list reply headers)
Hello Dave, On Wednesday, March 27, 2002 at 17:39:28 -0500, Dave Goodman [DG] wrote concerning 'Clarification requested on list reply headers': ... I've seen Marck's warnings about using folder templates, along with comments from several others. What I have not seen is an explanation why this is a Bad Idea. Would someone educate this newbie? :) This is a quote from Marck a few months ago (a very good explanation why folder templates are dangerous): ===8Start of quote== stock lecture I have a pet hate in TB. That pet hate is named Folder Templates. In 150 folders I have two and only two that have folder templates. They are for two specific lists which don't set the reply address properly. There is nothing else for which folder templates can be used that can't be covered and even improved upon using Address Book templates. There are dangers in using Folder Templates that are not there when you use AB templates. The dangers are all complacency based and are at their worst in templates which use the %TO= macro. If, at the instant you start a new message you happen to be focused on the wrong folder, the message gets given the wrong address. This happens when you click a mailto without changing folders. The results vary from embarrassing to excruciating depending upon the content of the misdirected mail. BTW - another mistake in such templates is to use the construct %TO=[EMAIL PROTECTED] without a %TO='' before it. So any pre-existing addresses are retained. Back to the lecture: every time I say this, someone takes exception to something I've said with comments like 'danger' is a bit harsh or I've used Folder templates for ages and it's never gone wrong for me. Here's a fact for you: it goes wrong. That's why I'm writing this message yet again. It works exactly as designed and that design has a fundamental flaw. The flaw is that it places too much responsibility on the user to make sure that the addresses given on a new message are those intended. With address book templates, there is never a mistake of this kind. Replies are perfectly directed. New messages are a bit trickier. Instead of clicking to the folder then clicking for a new message, you have to click to the right of the new message button and select the list address from the favourites (having denoted that the address *is* a favourite in the address book). /stock lecture ===8==End of quote== -- Best regards, David ** .::: ::..: ::.::. :..:: This tag-line is in Braille. ** [TB! 1.60] [Windows 2000 5.0 Build 2195 Service Pack 2] [Running on a Celeron 800@1176 256 Mb RAM] Current Ver: 1.60 / 1.60a FAQ: http://faq.thebat.dutaint.com Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes but that is almost useless when you can't restrict it to the nicknames only or at least cause it to search that field completely prior to any others. If it finds a real name that matches the first few characters of the nickname before it finds the nickname then it stops. And YOU CAN'T MAKE IT CONTINUE. SOS -- upgrading to new machine...
U, I'm sure this sort of thing gets asked a thousand times, and I'm sorry for asking again, but... Tonight, I will be replacing my current Win98 300-MHz machine with a new WinXP 1.8GHz machine. I'm currently running The Bat! 1.46c (yes, its registered; no, I've never done an upgrade since registering). I'd like to install the latest Bat! on the new WinXP box and somehow transfer all of my folders, rules/filters, preferences, address books etc. to it as painlessly as possible. I'll have the hard drives from the old machine connected to the new one long enough to do data transfers, but I don't plan to have both machines running simultaneously. Could some kind soul give me a step-by-step to do this? How much is possible without touching the registry? Will it automatically register itself when I transfer the Email msg containing my Bat! registration, or do I need to register manually? Do I need to enter the registration code before moving all my folders etc? Also, what pitfalls should I be aware of? I've been running ZoneAlarm along with The Bat! on my Win98 machine without trouble, but I read the new Bat! may be allergic to it? Any help or advice would be appreciated. Not step-by-step, just some pitfalls. 1. I think TB!'s message base format was changed somewhere around 1.46 to 1.49. It may be a good idea to first make that upgrade to not loose any messages. 2. Somewhere during the 1.5x series a good backup/restore was added especially for such tasks as yours. So another point to make an upgrade before changing machines. If you'd use the current build you may have a lot less trouble as when you start out with your older version. I am quite sure someone who has already done all this will come in to help you some more. Hello David, On Thursday, March 28, 2002, at 04:15:54 AM -0700, you wrote the following in regards to Why folder templates are dangerous (was Re: Clarification requested on list reply headers): I've seen Marck's warnings about using folder templates, along with comments from several others. What I have not seen is an explanation why this is a Bad Idea. Would someone educate this newbie? :) This is a quote from Marck a few months ago (a very good explanation why folder templates are dangerous): I still contend the problem is TB's because she forces either Folder Level (presuming a Folder Template is in use) or Account Level Templates on MailTo's. A MailTo: has specific instructions with reference to whom it is addressed and in some cases what the Subject heading should be and what is included within the Body. TB should do nothing but carry out the instructions within that MailTo: and simply limit her influence to providing the From: Address based on the Account used. Folder Templates are supposed to be a feature of TB, and not something that has the potential to cause embarrassment or even more serious consequences. I agree with Marck that AB Level Templates has more to offer a User, but nevertheless my suggestion is to either get rid of Folder Templates completely, or resolve the problem by addressing the improper handling of MailTo's. MS CryptoAPI settings in Options|S/MIME
Hello tbudl, as it was introdused in v1.60 the Microsoft CryptoAPI for S/MIME, I got a huge interest to use it, as I have 2 different types of secure tockens: iButton from Dallas Semiconductors (further reading from http://www.ibutton.com) and SchlumbergerSema's Cryptoflex 8K smart cards (http://www.cryptoflex.slb.com). CryptoAPI was the only way for me to use X.509 certificates stored on these secure tockens with TheBat. I went to Options|S/MIME, dialog box S/MIME Preferences opens, when I select Microsoft CryptoAPI. At this point an error box appears, this box is empty, in title it has S/MIME Properties, in the middle left red circle with white X in it. At the same time original S/MIME Preferences window goes background the main TheBat window, and changes in its appearance: I could see Cryptographic Sevice Provider with Default, and other two input fields for Encryptoion Algorithm and Signing Hash Algorithm, these fields are empty. If I press OK on alert dialog box, TheBat returns me to S/MIME Preferences with Internal Implementation selected. Some words about my steps to solve this issue: I have installes InternetExplorer5.5SP2 -- same behaviour I have installed IE6.0 -- same I have visited www.verisign.com's DigitalID enrollment page, I could see all my Cryptographic Service Providers (MS Base, MS enhanced, Dallas Semicond CSP, Schlumberger CSP, and 2 DSS providers). The Dallas CSP works fine, I could enroll. The Schlumberger CSP works fine, I could enroll too. I am not so familiar with CSP on Windows, so would very appreciate any suggestions which could lead me to successfull use of secure tockens with TheBat on Windows98. If you need any extra info from -- just let me know, as I am very interested to track down this issue. I concur with these two points whole heartedly. I just migrated from using a 400Mhz desktop running Win2k to a 1.3Ghz laptop running WinXP. I had to do exactly what you wish to, though my running version of TB! was more current. I'd do the following: a) Backup your current installation and then do an upgrade of your current installation to the current one. Only if it's working well should you proceed with the rest of the steps. Otherwise, restore your old installation, and we can discuss how to transfer it to your new system. If you've successfully upgraded you can do the following: a) Go to the Tools menu and select 'Backup'. Tick all the items there, select 'Standard' backup and hit the 'browse' to indicate where you wish the backup file to be placed and the name you wish to give it. Now run the backup. b) On the new machine, install TB! v1.60c. You may be asked if you wish to restore a from a backup during this installation (new feature that I haven't personally seen in action). If so, then give it the backup file to work with and you're done. If not, not to worry. Do what I had to do. :-) Just continue with the installation, create an account as instructed (and which you'll delete after restoring your installation). When you're finished with that part go to the tools menu and select 'restore'. Can't minimize TB 1.60
Using The Bat! v1.60 on Windows NT 4.0 Build 1381 Service Pack 6 One of my users is running TB! 1.60 on Win98 (original edition). I've just upgraded her OS, installing IE6 and all critical updates to date. Her copy of TB! launches from a shortcut in her Startup program group, set to open TB! minimized, but TB! starts in what appears to be a normal window. However, the minimize button doesn't work and you can't minimize TB! as launched. If I right-click the Taskbar button, Minimize is greyed out, leaving Exit and Restore available. If I choose Restore, nothing appears to happen to the TB! window, but I can now minimize it. FWIW, I don't get this problem if the Startup shortcut is set to open TB! in a normal window (and, for now, that's how I've left it set). Has anyone else noticed this issue? If so, is there a fix? FWIW, I'm not sure whether this problem started on upgrading to TB! 1.60 or on installing the OS updates. However, the problem did not exist with 1.53d. OK.. that fixed it Thanks... the only thing I don't like is if you don't highlight it quotes all the text. I seldom use quoted text or just a very small amount via highlighting since I think it is unneeded in most cases. What would be nice is a way to reply and no text is quoted unless highlight some text and do F4. I am just fussy but still like Bat over all others I've tried! Re: Address book as stand alone?
Hi Peter, PB Is there any way the address book can be opened PB independantly of The Bat Found it. The original version I tried long time ago still can be found here: ftp://ftp.midisa.pptus.rt.ru/pub/users/midisa/kartoteka/new.zip Apparently, there was a newer version released since then: http://www.midisa.com/eng/cgi-bin/soft/full.cgi?notebook but unfortunately the download link is disabled due to monthly traffic usage limitations... Maybe author could send it via e-mail? Dunno. Hope this helps, -E.
