I just received a msg from RitLabs with the changes between 1.53 and
1.60. I noticed the following:
,--- [ ]---
| [*] PC Speaker is used for beeping when moving to unread messages
| across folders (hmm, is it a good idea? :-)
`-
,--- [ ]---
| [-] An option to use the PC speaker or a sound card as beeper for

`-

I think the second has to potential to start creating the problems
mentioned here. Now if I just could find were this options is.
Does anybody know?

Ok, I'll take it there.

I thank all participants in this thread for their remarks. I'm afraid I
have to deal with our IT 'administrators'. Those were the same people that
brought you 'Why should an MX entry be important?' and 'Why shouldn't we
have two different IPs (one of them private) for the same mail server on a
public DNS?' and, finally 'What's a DNS for, anyway?'.

What would a "watch" thread feature do? I used to use the Watch
Thread feature in Agent (when I had time to look at newsgroups), but
this was in relation to automatically downloading messages of threads
I was interested in, rather than just the headers. In the case of TB,
I download all the messages anyway.

If we are talking about some additional functionality to the existing
filters (perhaps the ability to apply colour groups to threads via the
existing Shft-Ctrl-F Create Filter dialogue) then I would find it
useful.

Hello Ben,

I'd rather have first an "Ignore" feature (just the opposite to
Watch). It think it would have more sense for e-mail in general and
particularly for mail lists. As Julian says, Watch may have more sense
for Usenet newsgroups, where many only download headers and select to
Watch (full download) some threads.

Another interesting thing would be the registration fee. When starting

Interesting... now I'm going to have to track down Sub7 again, just to try it
out. Using Sub7 as an example, technically it doesn't 'infect' the jpg file, it
puts an executable wrapper around the file, leaving the extension as is... when
windows goes to open the file using your default image viewer, the wrapper
forces windows to run a shellexecute, then run the infected code. I cannot
remember if it then opens the original image or not... So technically we could
both be right... .jpg's as themselves cannot be executed, but .jpg files can be
infected, and a wrapper placed around them ;) I'm always willing to stand
corrected though :)

Which archives are you talking about? The ones on the web? or your
archives? It won't go through the ones on the website, but will
happily go through your folders that you specify. There was a thread

Thanks. Do you remember the thread subject?

The original poster I referred to referenced a web archive
msg & had identified the msg via a msg id #. When I
clicked it that called up the search dialogue that, as you
point out, only included my own folders.

It just seemed to me that a useful option, in addition to
being able to select folders, might have been a URL
browser dialogue so it could have searched the web
  archives as well.

It's used in conjunction with the Known filter. If you have that
filter switched on, all mail addressed from people in your address
book gets put into that folder... should make it a little easier to
identify spam ;)

As this question has been asked several times... might it not be a
nice addition to add to the FAQ (whoever maintains it?) ;)

Basically, you have a default filter that will move any message with

Log into the BugTraq. Look top-left of the screen. There's a drop down

Well, yes. Actually its in the upper right hand corner

The problem is that if I select Wish List & click 'switch'

guess that's what I was trying to say. I suppose I could

Re[2]: search dialogue

Bats-

This was my point last week as well - a link to the web archives, at
least as a backup for when a folder search fails, would be a very
useful thing. If it's possible to create a url pointer into the web
archives with the same message id as the mid: link it would be tres
cool. Especially for those of us who don't archive *everything* on
TBUDL on our hard disks but would like to be able to reference things
past easily. Looking at the archives, there doesn't seem to be a
correlation between the message-id and the url, so this is probably
not going to happen Any Day Soon.

Then whoever is hosting the Archives would have to change the indexing
system so the mid can be used to reopen the message, as well as TB!
having to read the header (which not *all* mailing list
software appends). There are a great number of things that can go
wrong with trying to do that... like somebody changing the name of a
page for example. Also how is TB! going to distinguish between a
personal email, and a list email? Again with the
header... not all lists actually put in headers, and some don't add
any additional information. Plus not all list archives store the full
email details... they may trim to save space etc. For example, what
is the point in keeping the path information when you cannot see it on
the website anyway? Just a couple of ideas ;)

The legend is at the top of the readme file. [-] indicates a bug has
been fixed:

Certainly is an odd way of doing it... but I guess they just have one
database on the other side, and a field that says wish or bug.

I still am convinced that the "old" Windows look, TB or Agent still

Depends, if you want to know where a new message has come in, there is

there isn't. But that's not the point for e-mails, they become

So, why the heck should there be an option like the one in Agent? It

I have a suggestion for compromise:

If the "Flag" could be made so that when used, it would flag any
future messages in the same tread, it would solve the "watch" request
without adding a new column. To keep others happy, who don't want it,
this feature could activated by a tick mark in the property menu for
each account or for each folder.

I am not a programmer, but I don't think this would be difficult to
build in.

If a number of us would agree, we should someway get it to RITLAB
suggestion box. I don't know how.

I don't know for sure if this is the reason. Installing the plug-in
was dead easy on my system. It was just a matter of pointing TB! to
the plug-in file. The trial version may be disabled in ways that
prevent plug-in integration.

Re[2]: "Inbox - Known" Folder? WHAT ARE THESE FOLKS THINKING?

2002-06-14 Thread Miles Johnson

TM> [+] The incoming mail filter for moving messages from known
TM> senders to a special folder so the Inbox can be left for unknown
TM> senders and spam :-)

Well I've been trying to figure this out ever since it was implemented, seen
all kinds of people upset about this... It boggles the mind that several
WEEKS after this (potentially very useful) feature is implemented there's
still NOTHING on the updated program's FAQ. This begs the question:
WHAT on earth are these good folks THINKING?
And please, please don't tell us that they don't have enough resources to
hire a full-time,. professional "help/FAQ writer." If TB truly has millions
of users, by now Ritlabs is extremely wealthy, especially considering the
exchange rate of western currencies for theirs...

Lo and behold, this morning I also get a message from Ritlabs stating the
changes since 1.53. Wow, how many weeks has it been since the first
iteration of 1.60 and we're getting this NOW?

I'm sticking to 1.53... Do others feel the same way?

Call me crazy but in my humble, non-geeky opinion what WOULD have made sense
- and created a lot less havoc among TB users, AND generated a lot more
business in these spam-crazed times - would have been for Ritlabs to create
a folder called "unknown" for all the spam... and to implement an easy,
customer-friendly way to customize it.

Having been a Bat user for a while now I'm convinced that we are dealing
here with a team that is made not only of good code-writers but also of very
intelligent people. So, I will ask my question once again (not that I expect
an answer from them, but perhaps some constructive thoughts from other
users):

WHAT on earth are these good folks THINKING?

Have a great weekend, everyone.

Full-width preview pane bug?

2002-06-14 Thread Costas Papadopoulos

Hello tbudl,

I have the split-mode view settings as "full-width Preview pane". If I
maximise the preview pane, thus hiding completely the folder tree and
the message list windows, then I can no longer drag down the preview
pane in order to reveal the folder tree and message list window. The
only workaround is to change the split view mode and then reset it to
the full-width preview pane.

This is quite annoying and I wonder if there's a better solution.

Yes. Rit labs use MantisBT which you can get from http://sourceforge.net/.

Re[2]: How to stop system "stop" sound?

2002-06-14 Thread Alan Little

I signed up for this list after this thread started, so I can't reply
to the beginning of it.

After a little organized testing, this definitely is resulting from a
filter deleting a message, regardless of whether it is also moved to
another folder. The Windows sound it is playing is the Exclamation.
Assigning a sound to the filter in the Action tab makes no difference:
it plays the sound and then the Exclamation.

This also definitely is new behavior, as I have had some of these
filters in use for a long time and this did not start happening until
I upgraded to 1.60q today. I don't remember what version I was using
before, but I think I've kept pretty current with announced releases.

So...someone please make it stop :)

Do you mean that you can drag the divider back down to its normal

Actually what I've got in mind is something that would include

[EMAIL PROTECTED]">mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
and
http://www.mail-archive.com/tbudl@thebat.dutaint.com/msg42263.html

in some simplified manner. I'm not familiar with the interaction
between the listserv and the web archiving software, so I don't know
how or even if this is a possibility, but if it's something that can
be achieved it seems to me that it would be quite useful (at least for
TBUDL).

You do bring up several interesting points. For example, I think that
there is no way for TB! currently to differentiate between a personal
email and a list email. I can put a mid: link to any email anywhere in
my hierarchy of folders, mail it to myself, and find it again easily.
However, this doesn't really add any ease of use over the F7 key.

I can see the idea... but for TB! to do this, it's going to have to:

  a) know the archiving server
  b) know how the server archives
  c) know how to search said server

a) is easy in TBUDL's case... it's in the list headers as list-archive
b) either RitLabs will have to persuade the developers of the list
servers to modify the codes, or be given access to the way it does
   the archiving.
c) Same as b really.

In most cases, the lists are just archived in a plain text file that
is retrieved later when viewing.

Again... as I said... depends on the list server. Most list servers
put in *some* kind of header... providing TB! can find that, it'd know
it's a list... but the issue as I said was that not all list servers
put that much info in there.

> However, this doesn't really add any ease of use over the F7 key.

If you have the archives, and are given an mid: I believe it's a lot
quicker... just a double click, and select a folder, and tada, there
it is. Would be better than trying to go searching through the
folders... although you can use the F7 key to search for the mid: it's
still quicker just clicking it.

Well, let me clue you in. The web archive is a member of the list.
When it receives a message from the list, it adds it to the archive.
www.mail-archive.com is a public resource over which we have no
control.

  Consider the following:

Use a different split style, ex: full height file tree
which allows you to see a good portion of everything. When
you want to read a msg just double click on it & a new
window will pop up. From there you can go pretty much full
screen & move on to the next msg as you wish.

After that, you can move to any other folder by Menu ->
Navigation -> Move to Folder or by keyboard via
   G.

Maybe you'll find that more convenient.

Same problem here. I changed folders (while changing messages) and
could not drag the preview pane back to it's original size.

I don't know whether the OS matters. I'm using Win98.
I don't have any toolbars displayed by TB.

Probably you placed the ticker outside of your desktop. This can be
fixed in your registry:
Close TB,
Start Regedit,
Go to HKEY_CurrentUser-Software-RIT-The Bat-Ticker
Here you see several keys, among others there are keys called 'Left'
and 'Top', set both of them to zero,
Close Regedit,
Start TB,
The ticker will be displayed at the left top of your screen, you can
drag it everywhere you want to.

Good hunting

It's pretty much the same in the UK as well, except there seems to be a little
more of a range in software in some cases.

> the US based international company my husband works for has shut down their

I live in the US now, and work for a software development company that write
accounting software for businesses (including accountants), and I am the systems
admin there. We run our web services in house to reduce costs, and it's all run
in unix. Once you get used to the commands, it's not that difficult.
Everything is pretty quick to pick up if you're technically minded (like most
people in the IT industry normally are). We never have to worry about viruses
getting in house via email, because we run MailScanner, with Sophos (a very good
UK based anti-virus company, who were in the news today commenting on the recent
.jpg threats). I admit, I've seen a number of attempts at accessing services
users shouldn't have access to, and even the odd attempt at Nimda being
installed from a remote webserver that was infected... but all in all, the
servers have not been shutdown since they first came online nearly a year ago,
service is flawless, and I don't have to worry about the latest microsoft bugs
being an issue to me.

> but he says there is no point even talking to anybody but the R&D arm about >

Only if the global services run virus scanners etc. But to me, until MS secure
Outlook from such stupid bugs, I think most IT departments should start looking
for decent alternatives to email clients, TB! being top on my list, and I've
already managed to convert two of the support staff over ;)

> Bizarre, isn't it?

Sadly not really. If you watch what children use when they're at home, then at
school, then when the start college etc... Most of the time its Windows, running
a windows based product... and unless you really push to be in a different area,
like taking computer sciences of some type, chances are, most people won't even
see a different operating system. (Except the Mac of course). Because all the
students, and up coming workers are more influenced by the MS world, it makes it
easier to fit into most requirements... but if you even take a cursory glance
over unix type OSes, you'll see that 99% of the stuff you can do on windows has
either been duplicated, or ported in some way. I've noticed recently a large
number of schools have started pushing for using linux as alternatives, giving
students a chance to branch out, and learn more.

I'm wandering way off topic now, so I'll stop ;)

Email Commands?

2002-06-14 Thread Keith Hanlon

Hello tbudl,

I'm using Mailwasher. I have set it to open The Bat! after is
processes my mail. There is an option to "Specify an email client
command" when it launches TB. I don't use this currently.

If TB isn't running, it Mailwasher will open it and TB is set up to
check my accounts. If TB is already running and I process mail in
Mailwasher, all it does is takes me to TB. My accounts aren't
automatically checked because it will only check them when I start up
or do it manually.

Should I use the option in Mailwasher to "Specify email client
commands?" If so, how do I do this? I couldn't find any info in the
FAQ, but I'm not sure what to look for...

Thanks!
