If I run it higher than 1024X768 I can't read it, even

It is such a shame, then, that it stuffs up many peoples' systems,
including mine.

If anyone would care to actually investigate why it does this and fix
it, I would seriously consider switching back. POPFile *is* slow, but
it works. Also, all those folks looking at abandoning TB! can switch to

There is also a memory leak. After the last paragraph I checked my

I'm not at all sure bouncing emails is a good thing. How often will they
bounce to the correct address? Why add to the amount of junk?

And, of course, if you bounce an email where a virus has added someone
else's address to the headers, won't you be bouncing it back to an
innocent victim? That happens to me already quite enough thank you. :-)

That depends on what you define as better. As an example, if one is
looking for a robust IMAP client, there are several clients that are
better. If one has their own server that can filter messages, TB's
strength in this area isn't as important. No matter how you look at
it, V3 is very buggy but, to each their own.

I think that, when things are going well, people smile and keep quiet
but the moment things start going even slightly wrong then the moans
start and, like an avalanche, it gains momentum picking others up on the
way down.

That's not to say TB! doesn't have its faults as any programme does but
some people seem to want it to do what THEY want and not have the
features that others might appreciate in their own way too. For instance
I hate HTML mail so just never use it but, occasionally, I get news that
is important to me and need to read it in HTML and then I'm glad that
TB! caters for it. Most things can be switched off if you don't like
them.

Hi,

I used to use spampal and popfile. I found that mail collection was
very slow and sometimes hung both the bat and the proxy program.

So, back when BayesIT was 5.3 or so, I decided to try it. I did not
train it at all. As emails came in, I categorized them as junk or
not. After three days or so, it was up to 98% accuracy. It still
makes a mistake, but it is 1 per 1000 emails or less.

In addition, and this is what is amazing, BayesIT has sped up email
collection by at least 300%. The speed difference is noticeable and
amazing.

No Bayes based filter will ever be 100% perfect. I believe, however,
that BayesIT is a very good implementation of the Bayes calculations.

Since the 5.10 or so, I have added the discussion and newsletter
groups to the whitelist, which has sped up mail collection even more.
This list generates a hundred or more email a day, and those are just
passed through BayesIT, and not counted in the totals.

So I have to retrain each time I upgrade the BayesIT plugin. That
seems rather painful. I think I'll try the Bayes Filter for a while
and see how that goes.

Slow when MailTicker active

2004-09-06 Thread Charlie
Composed on 9/6/04, at 11:16 PM GMT

I've not really noticed any problems (so far) with Ver 3 except for a
noticeable slow down associated with an active MailTicker.

For example. This happens when writing an email, and new mail arrives
which activates the MailTicker. If I choose ignore the new mail and
continue writing the email, or making address book entries etc,
actions such as spell checking or right mouse activated options
temporarily freeze TB! for about 10 to 15 seconds. This is something
that my previous versions have never done.

Is there a setting within the TB! that I can change (apart from
de-activating the MailTicker) that will cure this annoying problem?

Mostly it is a YMMV sort of thing at the moment. You install it and
it works well or it does not.

I have it (BayesIt 0.6.1) working on my system. I had some early
problems because I installed it over an older version. The key there
seems to be to completely remove all traces of the old one before
installing and trying to train the new one. If you have never
installed it, you may not have any problems. But as others have said,
they did. It is it is a problem for you, it is easy enough to remove
it and wait to see if the next release helps you.

I agree. My ISP filters spam and adds a header which I can configure,

I hope it's not slower, filtering seems to be slowing down email

3 minutes, I have no idea why as she has a very small database. She's
using v.3 also but that made no difference, nor did getting rid of the

I've had no problem with installing it. v3 comes with it
located in, usually, C:\Program Files\The Bat!\BayesIt.

That version is 0.6.0. There's a newer version available
at:
   http://www.ritlabs.com/download/bayesit/bayesit061.rar

The newer version has two new files, bayesit.INC and
bayesit.LNC. It's missing the language file: bayesit.lng.
So when I upgraded, I moved the files to a new subdirectory
I called 060, UNRARed to the BayesIt directory and copied
the missing language file from my 060 directory.

You install by selecting Options/Preferences then select
Anti-Spam on the left. The Anti-Spam plugin box will be
empty (because you haven't installed yet, or you moved the
files and deleted the 0.6.0 plugin).

Click add and select the plugin. Select it and configure
it. Click on "Do you speak.." and make sure the language
file is selected. Click on Options and see where its
placing its files and the log. Click OK - you're mostly
done.

Finish the options under Anit-spam. I kept "Out of 100..."
as Average and I checked "Move a message.." (as 60) "Mark
stored..." and "Move message...". Then click OK again.

For convenience, hit Alt-F12 (Tools/Edit shortcut..) to pick
a shortcut for Mark as junk (under Special).

I believe that's all I did and it seems to be working OK.
However I haven't been using it long enough to give an
opinion on how well it does its job.

Similarly to you I use 9 buckets, two of them for Spanish and English,
and this my performance:

Classification Accuracy
Messages classified: 192,991
Classification errors: 323
Accuracy: 99.83%

I use one of the buckets as a virus _detector_ and, including the
training period, this are the results so far:

Bucket virus
Messages classified: 8,219 (4.25%)
False Positives: 21
False negatives: 56

And it hasn't had any wrong classification in many months now.

Hello Robin,

Then right click in the message and unselect them. Smilies are
everywhere and in all forms of messaging, it's just that TB! has the
capability to convert them to pretty pictures - your choice whether you
see them or not. The same with the senders pictures (or yours for that
matter as it's showing here so you can't be too averse to it and you
must have uploaded it to the rogues gallery). Right click in the header
and uncheck header photo. This way TB! caters for everyone without
wasting any bandwidth in sending as the photos and smiley icons are
taken from your PC when you downloaded them.

I have editied my smiley list because, like you, I find a lot of them a
waste of time but I do like the common ones in picture form.

Each to their own and TB! gives everyone the chance to customise to
their taste. I reckon that's a plus but, due to the fractious nature of
many at this present time, I'll probably be shot down in flames ;-)

You maybe already have an adress book group for your customers (if not,
create one). Simply open the properties of that group and adjust the
templates for new messages and/or replies, using macros that pull the
information from the adress book (like %ABFromFName, etc. - refer to the

This is the problem; I have this addressed along with several
other testers on TBBETA with no answer yet. The next thing on my list
is to do a complete re-install of v3 and get it working. I don't think
the latest Bayesit will even be recognized as a plugin by the TB

v3.0 as an upgrade from what is originally supplied with the full
version of TB. That's all I know for now.

BayesFilter is not the same thing as BayesIt.

People who had the behavior you describe reported that they do not
have that difficulty using BayesFilter.

In mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Kevin Coates said:

"Using an alternative called Bayes Filter Plugin 1.5.2, I do not
experience this problem.

I went to that URL just now to see what it said. Found this (partial
quote). It is Achim's page:

"30.09.04 I released a new version (v1.5.2) of the Bayes Filter Plugin
with many new features and bugfixes. Please read the The Bat! section
 for more information!"

Of course, as Alexander Kunz pointed out to me in this thread, you may
not want a plug-in, since you prefer PopFile.

If so, I apologize for taking up your time. As I said, up to now, I
don't have any Spam offered to me on the Message Dispatcher--at most
one or two a week.

But the threads on tbbeta in regard to the BayesIt freeze all indicate
that using BayesFilter instead fixes that problem.

I don't like the subjects to be altered (you have to think of it each time
when you reply/forward unless you clean the subject in TB! with a
regex-enhanced template for replies and forwards) - obviously, I'm using
the x-text-classification header. :)

This has other advantages: you can configure TB! to show the header, as
well as the reclassification URL of PopFile in the header pane of the
preview window, thus checking wether the classification is correct and, in
case PopFile made a wrong classification, reclassify is only one click

> Can I expect it to be faster then the current default plugin in V3.0?

Depending on how much mail you get (well, being on this list alone brings
quite some each day ATM...) it may be slower (but I used BayesIt only a
very short time). After all PopFile is written in Perl, and Bayes analysis
requires a database (mine is 1.4MB right now).

And be aware that PopFile can be quite a resource hog - using concurrent
POP connections results in 100% CPU-load peaks during mail retrieval, and
memory usage is something like 20MB here, always.

Another note: of course, every Bayes filter requires training - it needs to
know which messages is spam, which is ham, at least (but keeping only spam
and ham apart is not all PopFile will do for you, of course). That is so
much easier in PopFile with the use of magnets. For example, set up a
magnet that will put every mail from this list into a bucket "genuine" (or
whatever you want to call it) - PopFile learns from every magneted message
and you have a big "ham" database in no time.

JFYI: I have seven buckets in PopFile (english, german, spam, invoices,
newsletters, ebay, orders) and run the program since 21-Jul-2004. Accuracy
is 98.51% at the moment, with a total of 4313 messages classified and 64
classification errors.

quoting only selected text

2004-09-06 Thread Michael L. Cusac
I'm using an old version of TB!, and the thing that most irritates me
about it is its clumsy handling of selected text for quoting when
replying. I see there was a thread about this here a month or so
ago, but I can't find definitive answers there.

In newer versions of TB!, is it possible to 'reply all' while quoting
only selected text? Better yet, is it possible to configure the
standard reply and forward keys so that if nothing is highlighted, the
entire message is quoted, but if anything is highlighted, only that
part is quoted? Or is there a macro for grabbing only selected text
rather than all of it?

I make it alter the subject line so that:

a) I know what I am sending if I forward or reply to the email
(manually delete any addition)...

b) I can click on it to get directly to the change classificatiion
page of POPFile.

In my experience you can expect it to be 100 per cent faster. I./e:
BayesIt kills The Bat every time, POPFile doesn't. And I find POPFile
so much easier to control - I didn't have aclue what was going on with
BayesIt.

really well for me!

I also use the DNS blacklist, which is a great feature that I loved from
SpamPal.

I installed the latest version on Saturday along with TB! V3, and my
stats so far are;

HamMails: 2475
SpamMails: 1683
Detected Ham: 1035 (99.9%)
Detected Spam: 840 (99.8%)
FALSE Ham detected: 1
FALSE Spam detected: 1

I can't really comment on Bayesit, but I did use it a while back, until
it decided to stop working after a TB! version upgrade.

Hope that helps ;-)

I don't believe it does, however you could try the following.

Set up BayesIt to move your Spam to the Junk folder. (Do not use a
common junk folder or this won't work.)

Do NOT let BayesIt mark as read.

Create a Read filter that sends the message to the Junk folder and is
set to "Delete Message from Server"

Now when you check your messages, to ensure they are Junk, they will
get marked as read, sent to you Junk folder and deleted from server.

Re: CSAPI spell checker

2004-09-06 Thread MAU
Hello Cyrille,

> Some ideas ?
>
> If TB does not detect them automatically, is there a way to show TB!
> manually the path to the CSAPI spell checkers ?

I used the CSAPI Spanish and UK English spell checkers with Office 97
for some time without any problem. When I upgraded to Office 2000 I
could not use them on my desktop but didn't have a problem on my laptop.
Finally, when I upgraded to Office XP (which I use now) they wouldn't
work either on desktop or laptop.

I don't recall exactly where I got the solution from, probably from this
list a long time ago. The thing is that I have a "Proof.zip" file that
contains the following:

   mssp2_es.lex (Spanish dic.)
   mssp2_en.lex (UK English)
   Mssp232.dll (CSAPI engine?)
spelling.reg (Registry keys for everything to work)

The dictionaries and the engine I think are from my Office 97 but, in
any case, better than the ones included with TB.

The registry key settings (or the idea or explanation on how to set
them) if what I got somewhere else. Maybe from this list, as I have
said, but not sure. What is sure is the I did not "invent' them.

Just a few weeks ago I got a new computer and installed everything from
scratch, including Office XP (i.e. I did not upgrade from 97 to 200 and
then to XP). Then I placed 'my' dictionaries and engine in the
directories called for in the registry settings in 'spelling.reg' and
finally imported 'spelling.reg into the Registry and I have full access
to both CSAPI dictionaries from TB.

I have not tried (yet) to use the equivalent dictionaries from Office
2000 or XP, but I assume they will not work. But who knows.

Anyway, if any wants to try (at your own risk, of course) this is the
content of my 'spelling.reg' (watch out for possible wrapping of long
lines either at my or your end):

I think that all programs should visually indicate where the last line
went when one scrolls. Perhaps the line could underlined for a moment
before fading out? But, this would only be useful if it were
implemented system wide...

For the most part, I kept the defaults in the filter itself. I did set
up a white list that included my mailing lists and my own addresses. I
changed the directory structure so BayesFilter and its logs and files
reside under /The Bat!. I found this makes it easier to clone my
notebook to my desktop using the 7zip archiver and a batch file. I
move suspected junk mail to the junk folder, rather than delete it.
This facilitates forwarding junk to SpamCop.

Windows XP - Service Pack 1 oder Service Pack 2? Could it be you installed
SP2 and that happend just about the same time you updated TB? :-)

Excerpt from
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2netwk.mspx

Limited number of simultaneous incomplete outbound TCP connection attempts

Detailed description

The TCP/IP stack now limits the number of simultaneous incomplete outbound
TCP connection attempts. After the limit has been reached, subsequent
connection attempts are put in a queue and will be resolved at a fixed
rate. Under normal operation, when applications are connecting to available
hosts at valid IP addresses, no connection rate-limiting will occur. When
it does occur, a new event, with ID 4226, appears in the system’s event
log.

Why is this change important? What threats does it help mitigate?

This change helps to limit the speed at which malicious programs, such as
viruses and worms, spread to uninfected computers. Malicious programs often
attempt to reach uninfected computers by opening simultaneous connections
to random IP addresses. Most of these random addresses result in a failed
connection, so a burst of such activity on a computer is a signal that it
may have been infected by a malicious program.

What works differently?

This change may cause certain security tools, such as port scanners, to run
more slowly.

How do I resolve these issues?

Stop the application that is responsible for the failing connection attempts.

Maybe this applies to you?

So now we need some definitive statement from someone that POPFile can
only handle 6 connections at once and ditches the rest.

That would fit with the behaviour.

I have v3 and the new filter system transferred from v2 like a dream
and works beautifully. Well worth the upgrade fee alone.

However - query:

This has always applied since I started using POPFile.

Note: BayesIt kept freezing connection centre so I ditched it for
POPFile.

It works very well except that ever since v2 I have problems with
connecting to the POP3 server(s).

I have 40 email accounts and wheh I do a check and download all, may
of them (not specific ones each time) just appear briefly in the
Connection Centre and then disappear as iff they have been checked but
they haven't in fact and the message for each of these is Couldn't
connect to server. Since many of them are on the same server it seems
odd.

Is there some time out business going on that is doing it, might it be
a limit on concurrent connections with TB or PoopFiel?
I need suggestions for what settings I might tweak methodically to
isolate the cause of this behaviour.

If, immediately after this has happened I go through each accoutn and
hit F2 individually they always connect and check.

This problem is being addressed by many through using BayesFilter
rather than BayesIT.

Here's a quote from a post on tbbeta just this morning,

This is what is said on Microsoft's website:

[Start quote...]
CSAPI may not be used to call into Microsoft's spell check engine and
lexicon. For example, third-party developers who want to incorporate
spell check capabilities into their own applications may not use CSAPI
to access the spell check engine and lexicons that are installed by
Microsoft Office. Microsoft does not currently provide spell check
utilities for use in third-party products.
[...End quote]

Here's the URL for those who want to read the whole text:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;262605

The above text is related to MS Office 2000/2002(XP). So, basically
TB! is already violating the above quote.
