Preview pane and main menu disappeared - revised
Correction to my previous email below: I found what I thought was the preview pane but apparently is called the Message space and was able to restore it by clicking in the Workspace menu and turning on Message auto-view. so that problem is solved. However, I still cannot figure out how to restore the toolbar or main menu which contains File, Edit, etc. Thanks. I'm not sure I have the correct term, but the preview pane, the part of the main screen which shows me a preview of the message below my list of emails, has disappeared. I have no idea how to get it back. I did a search for Preview Pane, but that gave me nothing. Also, my main menu has disappeared. This is the menu which has File, Edit, etc up at the top. Again, I don't know what I did to cause it to disappear, but can anyone suggest a way to get it back? Moving The Bat!
In the next week or so, I will be replacing the computer on which The Bat! is located. I'm a registered user of 6.4.0.2 (32-bit) currently on a Windows 7 machine. I will be moving to another new Windows 7 machine which will support 64-bit (actually, the old computer supports 64-bit--not sure why I'm using the 32-bit). I have a current backup named BatBackup2.tbk which is stored off-site. Since I'm a bit of a dunce at this, can someone let me know where I can find instructions about moving everything to a new machine? I would assume I'd download the latest version of The Bat! -- or can I get the same version--which would be best to do? Can I then simply select Restore from the Tools menu and everything will be back to normal? Or is that making things too simple? Backup question
I'm currently using version 6.4.0.2 (32-bit) with Windows 7. I backup my Bat every day at around 5:30 pm with The Bat backup utility that places a .tbk file in a folder on my C drive. Each night, that .tbk file gets backed up to an off-site cloud location through IBackup. If my computer totally crashed and I had to get a new computer, am I correct in saying that I could then download whatever the current version of TheBat! is and restore the .tbk file and have my Bat program be exactly the same as before the crash with all the emails available and readable, etc? In other words, is the .tbk backup fill all I need to be functioning again? I ask this because I've noticed that in my user folder under AppData||Roaming there are a number of TheBat! files. One of the Roaming files has the name of my account, and it's 2.2 gb in size. Do I need to back these Roaming files up as well, or are all of these in my .tbk file? Thanks. New version?
I'd written for help because after reinstalling The Bat (when I had to also reinstall my Windows 7 operating system), the Preferences window would not enlarge and would not allow me to make any changes. Basically, no one had a suggestion that worked, so I guess I'm going to try to solve the problem by upgrading to a new version of The Bat. I'm currently using 4.2.44.2. Does anyone have a suggestion as to which version is the most stable? The current version seems to be 6.3.2, but when I try to see what's new in that version, the link is broken. Need Advice on Backing Up and Reinstalling
I am currently using The Bat! version 4.2.44.2 on a PC with a Windows 7 operating system. I received an error message this morning saying that my copy of Windows 7 was not a genuine one. I still have the thebat_pro_4-2-44.msi file from when I originally installed it and I do have my Key Block. 1b. What files will I need to back up? ---My mail directory setting in Preferences lists: %APPDATA%\The Bat!\ I assume this means my mail directory is in C:\Users\MSG\AppData\Roaming\TheBat!\Janus1 where MSG is my user name and Janus1 is my mail account name. Encryption concerns
Why is everyone so concerned about encrypting their email? It must be clear by now the that US National Security Agency--as well as the comparable security agencies in every other civilized country in the world--can break all encryption codes and most likely were involved in setting up the encryption codes in the first place. The good news is that from now on when I forget one of my passwords I can probably file a request with the NSA and have them send it to me. :) -- Mike -- Mike Current version is 5.2.2 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

I would have to see a list of articles verifying that claim. Remember, for one example, that 'Snowden' was using some form of email encryption. I use OpenPGP with The Bat!, thus an RSA4096 subset, and seriously doubt that, given they didn't get my pass-phrase, they could break it in a 100 years or less with distributed computing even. As for being in on the development, it's open source code, available to all of us to verify no back doors. Current German Tech News Moments are saying, in their talking-points, that people should begin using GPG4win and other OpenPGP . What i sent was meant as humor, a joke. I was not serious. Help with removing old email addresses
I haven't been here in a long time, but I'm having a problem with old email addresses which appear when I begin to address an email. For example, if I start to write to John Smith, I may get the following choices in the To: line-- johnsm...@yahoomail.com johnsm...@googlemail.com johnsm...@someotheraddress.com I know how to change an address if it's in my address book, but these are people to whom I've written in the past, and The Bat is giving me the choice of using them. But some of those addresses might be old ones which are no longer active, and I don't know how to delete them. Consequently, I often choose the wrong address, and then the email gets bounced back to me. Can anyone help with deleting addresses which are not in my address book but are suggested by The Bat from my history? -- Mike Current version is 4.2.42 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Sorry for being so dense. No problem - if you don't get it to work, then it's cumbersome. :) But the procedure works here on my machine (using version 4.2.42). When I start typing, TheBat! suggests what's in history (the recent addresses). If there are entries I know I won't need I just arrow down to the ones I want to erase - and pressing the Delete-button executes my wish. To me it's as easy as that. So I am not sure how to suggest anything different or a more correct way to do it. Re[2]: email traveling
I see you apparently have the professional version of TB! in which case you can download and use Voyager with your current license. I'd load that up on a USB drive of your preference and use that as your home copy and just take it on the road with you. That's what I do and take it between home and the office everyday as well as with me on any trips. Works great and no need to sync files. I'm a bit confused. Does one download mail to the desktop version and to the Voyager on the USB drive? Or do you use only the Voyager version and always download mail to it, no matter which computer you're on--never using the desktop version of TB at all? -- Mike Current version is 3.99 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re[2]: Moving from Outlook 2003
1A. Can TB data files be stored on a networked external hard drive so that we can access the mail from two computers and a laptop? Doing this here every day: one desktop (hosting the files actually, but works with a network-share, too) and one notebook used in the office sometimes, mostly on the road. I am opening TB only on one machine at a time (so I think one licence is fine, isn't it?) and have the files available as offline files so TB finds them in the rightplace when I am not connected to the server. I'm not sure what you mean by having the files available as offline files. Would this be necessary for me since I'm not on a server? It's just a home network. -- Mike Current version is 3.99 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Moving from Outlook 2003
I'm sure this topic has been covered if someone could help me find the information. I'm currently using TB 3.95 for one business. However, I'm involved in a second business which uses Microsoft Outlook 2003. Please don't tell me how bad it is. I already know that. I'm trying to convince my partner to move from Outlook to TB, and I have some questions: 1A. Can TB data files be stored on a networked external hard drive so that we can access the mail from two computers and a laptop? We do NOT need to access the mail at the same time, but we do need to look at it and respond to it from the two desktops and the laptop at different times easily. 1B Will we have to buy three versions of TB (one for each computer and one for the laptop) and still be able to access the same data files from all three computers? I'm a bit fuzzy on how this would work. 2. Our Outlook mail is currently in a PST file which is approaching 1 gb. Our mailboxes have folders and sub-folders. Will TB import all the mail and mailboxes correctly so that we won't have lost anything? I'm not asking for a guarantee here, just some advice on the general reliability of the import process. 3. What we'd do, probably is download a trial version of TB onto my computer (since I already have some experience with it) and test the importing and data file setup. I definitely want to keep the test installation completely separate from my current one. Is it possible to run two different versions so they don't interfere with one another? Thanks for any help. -- Mike Current version is 3.99 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Outgoing Mail Delays
How weird that this topic should come up. I'm using version 3.95.6, and about two weeks ago I began getting a 40 second delay (I can see the seconds count up in the control center) when I send mail. The mail goes out, but there's always a 40-second delay. The status tells me that it connected and that it got through my ISP's authentication process, but the delay occurs at about 6-7 seconds when the center shows sending message header. The second weird thing is that I use both a a business and a personal server from my ISP. I get no outgoing delay if I use the personal server, but I do get the delay if I use the business server. The third weird thing is that my partner, who sits 15 feet away from me and uses Outlook for email but uses the same ISP, has exactly the same problem: a 40-second delay on outgoing mail from the business server but not from the personal one. Two different computers, two different mail programs, but the same problem. Our ISP has been helpful but can come up with no answer. They try the same things from outside computers (using our account settings and passwords) but do not get the same delay. We've tried telnetting to the mail servers (both business and personal) and get no delay at all with the personal server but a 3-5 second delay (insignificant, they say) with the business server. It's probably not a Bat problem, so I apologize for bringing it up, but my ISP claims it's not an ISP problem either. Just fishing for answers anywhere I can. Re[2]: Backup and Address Books
I regularly use the backup utility of The Bat! to backup my mail files. What's annoying is that every time I must re-select which address books I want to back up. LVK I *think* the last selection is automatically remembered if you LVK back-up using the scheduler, I think the same, but then I deleted all those extra address books in my setup. I had deleted the Intermediate and Trusted Root Folders from my Address Book, but they still showed up in the backup utility list. So I went to C:\Program Files\TheBat!|Mail and found they were still there. So I deleted them from that folder. I closed TB, reopened it, and checked the backup utility. The Intermediate and Trusted Root items were still there. I went back to Program Files\TheBat!\Mail only to find the folders I'd deleted had been apparently recreated when I reopened TB. I regularly use the backup utility of The Bat! to backup my mail files. What's annoying is that every time I must re-select which address books I want to back up. I don't understand why I can't set a default for which address books I want backed up--with the option to change them if I want. Instead, I'm given some option by TheBat! which I must uncheck (Intermediate CA--I have no idea what that is and don't use it) and then re-check the ones I want. Why does the utility not give me the option of setting the address book backup defaults? -- Mike Current version is 3.95.06 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Blue Lines
A friend sent me an email that he asked me to edit and return to him. When I hit reply, I get his text with a thick blue line to the left, and it's nearly impossible to edit what he sent me in any coherent way. What causes the blue line? Is it possible to turn that off? Frustrating. -- Mike Current version is 3.95.06 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re[2]: Forward Message Question
MG Whenever I try to forward mail to people in one of my address MG book groups, the text of the message I'm trying to forward gets deleted. I tried your forwarding template and that works fine, so I guess you're bitten by duplicate address book entries or you made some typo in your template. You were exactly correct. I did have duplicate entries, and after I corrected them, things worked. Thanks very much. Templates for a Beginner
First question: I found the following in an article by Gerd Ewald and edited by Marck D. Pearlstone on How to Use Regular Expressions: You have to download a DLL written by Dirk Heiser (http://www.Dirk-Heiser.de/RegExTest/RegExTest.zip) and copy it into your TB-directory. That link is no longer a good one. Does anyone know how to find this file? Second question: Is the above Ewald article the best tutorial on how a non-technical novice can learn to use templates? If not, can you suggest another? Third question: I've used TB since 2000, but never taken much advantage of anything it can do. I have a few simple Quick Templates, but I'm interested in learning more of the basics of template construction. For example, is it possible to create a new message or a reply and have it show one of three different email account addresses in the FROM line dependent upon the person to whom it is going without my having to remember to change the FROM line? For example, my emails to this mailing list often get rejected the first time because I forget to change the FROM line from my default business address to the personal address I registered here with. :) A direction to resources which might help me do this, if it's possible, would be appreciated. Christmas Edition
Last night I ordered The Bat! Christmas edition. As of today I've not yet received anything other than a confirmation that the order was placed. I haven't received an indication of where or how to download the file or what my new license number will be. Does anyone know how long this usually takes? Re[2]: Returning to previous versions
If I try it and decide I don't like it, how do I return to my previous version which is 2.01.3? Create a complete backup prior to installing the new version. Then restore it in case you want it back. By complete backup, Peter means a backup of the program files directory as well, not just a backup using the built-in backup tool. Would I have the complete program files if I backed up everything in C:\Program Files\The Bat! or are there other files lurking elsewhere on my hard drive? -- Mike Current version is 3.95.06 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Returning to previous versions
Thanks to all who responded. I certainly hope I won't need to return to my current version, but it's helpful to know how to do that should I need to. -- Mike Current version is 3.95.06 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Returning to previous versions

Address Book Nesting
Is it possible in the address book to have groups inside of a group? My main folder, for example, is called Classes. Under that I have groups called class1, class2, class3, class4, etc. Some of these classes are no longer active, but I don't want to delete the groups. I want to move the whole group (class 2 and class 4 for example) inside a folder under Classes, called inactive classes. I want to end up with: Classes Class1 Contact1 Contact2 Contact 3 Class3 Contact1 Contact2 Contact 3 Inactive Classes Class2 Contact1 Contact2 Contact 3 Class4 Contact1 Contact2 Contact 3 I haven't been able to figure out how to do that. Address Book Question
I'm using TB 2.01.3. I'd like to have the Address Book display peoples names by last name and then first name so they are easy to locate. But when I send an email, I'd like the To: line to show the first name before the last name and then the email address. Is there a way to do this so that I don't have to reverse the names manually each time? I have a feeling there should be an obvious solution which I haven't figured out. Thanks for any help. -- Mike Current version is 3.95.06 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Open Address book, go to |View| |Sort by| choose |Last name| Mike But when I send an email, I'd like the To: line to show the first Mike name before the last name and then the email address. In properties choose: |Display Name as | First, Middle, Last. It's true that with your method sorting in the address book is done by last name, but the names are still shown in the address book with first name first. I can live with this if necessary, but ideally--and I suggest this for some later update if it's not available now--I'd like to have the option of having the address book show the last name first while the email shows the first name first. Question about Voyager
I'm a bit puzzled about Voyager. Does one buy it separately or does it come automatically with The Bat! Professional? I'm currently using 2.01.3 Business Edition and am thinking of taking advantage of the Christmas sale to upgrade, but I'm not sure whether Voyager is sold separately or as part of Professional. That did it. After checking Hide items in all the groups, I was able to delete duplicates and have one listing for each person remain, showing up both in the root list and in the group list(s). The address book is still a bit confusing to me, but you've helped me clear up all the immediate problems. Problem with Address Book
I am currently using the business edition 2.01.3 on a PC using XP Pro with plenty of memory and hard drive space. I need to set up groups within a major address book. Let's call the address book Club.I need four or more groups within that. Club Class A Members Class B Members Class C Members Class D Members To complicate the matter, one person can be in two or more groups. Question 1 - I can set up the groups with no problem, but if I enter the people in a group, they do not show up in the overall Club list. If I enter them in the overall Club list and mark them as being in a group on the Properties page, then they disappear from the overall Club list and show up only in the Group list. How do I get them to show up in both places so that I have the choice of sending a mailing to all the members in the Club list or only to members of a specific group? Question 2 - Also, sometimes, the same name shows up twice in a group and if I delete one of them, they will occasionally both disappear. Why? Question 3 - When I try to delete a listing for a person, I get some kind of message that makes no sense to me at all: The group ___ hides its items unless it is specifically selected. Do you want to remove items associated only with this group from the address book? What does this mean? I can make no sense out of that message at all. Question 4 - Do later versions correct some of the problems I'm having? Mike Greenbaum Current version is 3.85.03 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re[2]: Problem with Address Book
Robin, Thanks. That partially helped. But I had 6 items in the group and, after unticking the Hide items line, four of them now do show up in the root list, but two do not. Does it matter whether I created the item originally in the root list or in the group list? Any way to change this without totally retyping items? I had never heard of cut marks, but I'll try to remember to include them. I assume they go after my signature? Where would they go on a reply like this? I also put them under my signature here. Edit the properties of the group so that Hide items if not explicitly selected is not ticked. The purpose of this is (to quote from the help) When checked (default) contacts are shown only in the Group but not in the root the group belongs to. Do you want to remove items associated only with this group from the address book? What does this mean? I can make no sense out of that message at all. Relates to the answer to question 1. It's asking if you just want to remove it from the group, or also from the address book. PS. You have no cut mark towards the end of your message. This is required by the group rules and it is used because some email clients (including, of course, TB) automatically strip off everything after the cut mark when replying. A cut mark consists of dash dash space on a line by itself. Current version is 3.85.03 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re[2]: Problem with Address Book
Robin: Interesting. When I unchecked the groups on the item's properties in the group list, the item reappeared in the root list and disappeared from the group list (as expected), but when I then went to the properties for the item in the root list and checked them, the person disappeared again from the root list and reappeared in the group list. Can't seem to keep this item in both places, even though other items in that group are in both places. Look at the address book entry itself (i.e. select Properties on the item) and on the first tab you should see both the address book and the group listed. Try unselecting the group that page and see if the entry reappears in the root list. Does it matter whether I created the item originally in the root list or in the group list? They go at the end of the content of your message. It could go after your name, or (as mine does) before your name. No one seems much fussed by that. But if you have other stuff like cookies or system configuration, it should go before that. Where would they go on a reply like this? I also put them under my signature here. That was fine, and it worked properly. Do you have a separate template for this list? If so, it's useful to put the cut mark and your system configuration in it.
