Yahoo UK SMTP problem
Two of my e-mail addresses are with Yahoo! UK, which allows POP3 access. Until recently YUK has used plain transport and everything worked fine, but recently they changed to requiring SSL. Since then I've been able to *receive* mail, but not to send it. When I try to send I get this error: - Server reports error. The response is: 5.7.1 Authentication required - As far as I can see, I have the correct settings. YUK's Help file at http://help.yahoo.com/kb/index?page=contenty=PROD_MAIL_MLlocale=en_GBid=SLN4724 gives: - Want to access Yahoo Mail from an email program like Outlook or Mac Mail? Here's the settings you'll need. Incoming Mail (POP) Server - Requires SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Server: pop.mail.yahoo.com Port: 995 Requires SSL: Yes Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - Requires TLS (Transport Layer Security) Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com Port: 465 or 587 Requires SSL: Yes Requires authentication: Yes If your POP client doesn't offer TLS, you'll still be able to use SSL. Login info - Requires authentication Email address: Your full email address (n...@domain.com.) Password: Your account's password. - I substitute .co.uk for .com, but everything has worked OK until SSL. The settings I have, text-scraped from TB's screen, are: Transport SMTP Server smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk SMTP Connection Secure on dedicated port (TLS) SMTP Port 465 Incoming mail protocol Incoming mail serverpop.mail.yahoo.co.uk Connection to incoming mail server Secure on dedicated port (TLS) Incoming mail server port 995 Connection timeout 6000 sec Detail screenshots are at http://imgur.com/RfLCMJ5 , http://imgur.com/noH0ZAq , http://imgur.com/SNqRWlq These look OK to me. I couldn't get Ultrafunk Popcorn to work either, but the small, free, portable nPOP worked OK. So it isn't a problem with my PC. I read far more messages than I send, and probably haven't sent any for a while: it's possible this problem has only occurred since upgrading from TB 5.8.8 (I think) to v6. However, I can't be certain of that. My other accounts are Regular, so I can't cross-check with them. SSL SMTP Problems
Hello. The Bat! is driving me nuts. It will not work with SSL SMTP settings with my ISP Internode or Gmail. Internode Secure SMTP gives me this error when trying to send email through The Bat: !20/11/2008, 16:52:30: SEND - Message has not been sent. Re: [TBUDL] Problems logging onto SMTP-server
Well, here I am again - replying to my own message: Is anyone having trouble with TB hanging on logging onto the SMTP-server? (Not TB per se but the *task* in CC.) I had the problem with TB 3.99.29 - the problem continues with 4.00.24. The SMTP-server TB connects to is installed on the very PC that TB is on - that installation has not been tampered with for over a year now - the problem with TB has been there for some few months. TB says: Logging on to the server - if I am lucky, TB will not get stuck with that task. But quite so often the task is just forever waiting (for days if you're not restarting TB). TB has apparently NO Time Out protection that aborts and possibly retries from start. When it gets stuck it just says Logging on to the server - and that's it. Any clues? Thanks! I have investigated a bit more - and have found the reason to the problem - unfortunately, I haven't found a fix...or ...I have a fix, but it is no way a nice one...anyway: (I will be referring to TB: TheBat - email client MEP: Mail Express Professional - SMTP-server CC: TB's Connection Centre) NOTE: TB and MEP are resident on the same machine - hence, the times should be corresponding very well UNLESS one of the applications has its time completely freaked up. Apparently, something is happening between the mail client and the server. Then I looked up TB's own log (account.log) - and found something very interesting at the times 08:38:21 and 08:42:40: !12.07.2008, 08:38:21: ANTIVIRUS - The anti-virus has reported _ an error, the object cannot be checked _ for viruses !12.07.2008, 08:42:40: ANTIVIRUS - The anti-virus has reported _ an error, the object cannot be checked _ for viruses The Anti Virus that is running on the machine is AVG 8.0.138 (updated on a daily basis). And it strucks me...the problem started happening after AVG was installed. So... It is already fair to say the email server is innocent - the installation hasn't been tampered with for a long time - and it is running properly. However, one can also conclude the problem to be in between TB and AVG. I was actually surprised AVG was working on outgoing messages as I have disabled this capability. Wondering if there was something I had been doing wrongly I checked the programs settings - and yes, it was disabled. Or was it? From the AVG Overview hovering E-Mail it says Active. All well. But: Looking at the Description of selected component it says E-mail Scanner scans incoming and outgoing e-mail and E-mail Scanner is active. One has to wonder if that line scans incoming and outgoing e-mail is descriptive or if it is showing some Status for the component, as well. Clicking on the component brings up the dialog box for said component. From there it is revealed that, yes, Scan outgoing messages is unchecked (disabled). So why is AVG interfering? It is configured to IGNORE checking outgoing mail, yet it seemingly does check these messages (and fail on some occasions creating stuck messages with TB). !12.07.2008, 08:38:21: ANTIVIRUS - The anti-virus has reported _ an error, the object cannot be checked _ for viruses !12.07.2008, 08:42:40: ANTIVIRUS - The anti-virus has reported _ an error, the object cannot be checked _ for viruses Apparently, TB indeed receives a response from AVG or else TB wouldn't put

Well, here I am again - replying to my own message: And another reply-to-myself... It is configured to IGNORE checking outgoing mail, yet it seemingly does check these messages (and fail on some occasions creating stuck messages with TB). I just found out: Disabling Scan outgoing messages from AVG itself won't matter. Something else might have been set for the AVG for The Bat! Virus checking Plug-In, you see... If Check outgoing mail for viruses is checked (Enabled) in TB's Preferences (- Protection - Anti-virus), well, then it is ON; Enabled and utterly Active. I have finally (I hope) got this one Disabled! Actually: It seems that users would stay pretty safe if Disabling Check incoming mail for viruses PROVIDED the following is ENABLED: Check attachments for viruses before opening them from The Bat! Check attachments before the user saves them to the disk To me it seems that Disabling Check Incoming is safe by the very fact that one can't really do any access to an attached file unless the two Check attachments have been running. I see one potentional risk here as far as Virus checkers go: If you do a scan of your computer, your Anti Virus program might try to look into your mailboxes (.TBB). If an attachment hasn't been put into Quarantine, but still exist in full code inside the mailbox, your Anti Virus program might want to Quarantine it itself. And it might try quarantining the ... ppps! ... entire mailbox! Hence, make sure your Virus checker is told to IGNORE the folders/directories where your mailboxes reside when it is Scanning your computer. Use at your own risk - as for opening attachments, rule #...1 applies: Do not open ANY attachment you receive UNLESS it is expected (or makes sense in your communication with the Sender) or !!!at least!!! comes from a secure, known and trusted Sender. But back to TB: My opinion that TB should protect itself from malfunction Plug- ins apply - TB got to have a Time Out Protection - I would like to escalate my suggestion to be valid for both incoming and out- going message - in fact ANYTHING that is passed thru a Plug-In where TB is supposed to resume control after the Plug-In has finished its task. I have also found some suspecious and very similar behaviour with Incoming mail. The behaviour is that the problem is also there for Incoming mail - and bugs TB big time. smtp auth: what am I missing?
Hello, all. With TB! 3.99.3, I seem to be unable to use smtp authentication. I'm getting a ``must first authenticate message'' from the server. I must be missing something... Force the use of SMTP?
Hi All, Recently I set up an account for a friend's small office and ran into an interesting problem. TB! sits on three different computers with one acting as a server. Basically the other computers' accounts are set up to point to the Messages.tbb and Messages.tbi on the server for each of their respective accounts. He has 3 different accounts, i.e. [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] It would seem that whenever one account e-mails another it doesn't use SMTP and then POP3 to send and receive the message, but rather puts the message directly into the other account. The to: and from: addresses are right, but a copy of the RFC 822 headers looks like this: Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2006 14:42:17 -0500 From: x [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Mailer: The Bat! (v2.10.03) Business Reply-To: x [EMAIL PROTECTED] Organization: x X-Priority: 3 (Normal) Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: test 1441 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I'm no expert in deciphering the 822s, but in this case it doesn't seem to have most of the information I see in normal 822s (i.e. received from). Is TB! being smart and realizing that it's really not going anywhere so it just puts it into the appropriate local account? Any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -- Best regards, Nick Current version is 3.71.03 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

From the TB Help File - Network and Administration - The Bat! Networking Course: Local Delivery Technology is provided by The Bat! when the appropriate option is turned on. To activate it, open the Network Administration dialog box on the server, and tick the Allow Local Delivery checkbox. This option allows several machines to work in a local network exchanging messages without using n SMTP/POP server at all. All 3 are in stand alone mode with each of the clients sharing the messages.tbb and message.tbi for each account on the server, so I don't have access to the Allow Local Delivery option. In that case, I'll just attribute it to Bat Magic (tm). grin If each machine connects directly to the internet to send and receive e-mail but saves it to a network shared drive, then I don't know how TB knows that it's really not going outside of the local system. This is what I hear you saying. Tell me if I got it wrong. 1. There are three machines with TB installed on them. (Clients x,y,z) 2. There is a fourth machine which is acting as a file server. (Server) 3. The server has a shared folder containing the messages.tbb and .tbi files for the three accounts (x,y,z). 4. Each client has an account set up under TB for whichever mailfile it uses. i.e. Client A uses a.tbb and a.tbi on the server. Client B uses b.tbb and b.tbi on the server etc. (I used b.tbb just as shorthand, I know they're still called messages.tbb etc and are just in different folders). 5. Each client can send and receive SMTP / POP traffic directly to the internet without using the server and the mail is then stored in the respective mail file on the server. SHRUG You got me how each TB standalone installation would know which accounts are local and therefore not use the internet. What SMTP server are the clients using? What POP server? Are there any other possibilities that you might be able to think of? Not really. I mean, if you had a local SMTP and POP server on the same network that the clients were configured to use, you should still see that box as a hop in the headers. i.e. Received from clientA (IP) on SMTP server address blah, blah. Now, if each client had all three accounts set up under each and there was an outgoing filter to move the message to one of the other accounts, then maybe I could see this happening. Another idea is that if all three accounts are set up under each client, then maybe TB is smart enough to realize the accounts are local and does a local delivery. I don't recall that happening when I had multiple e-mail accounts under one TB installation, but that was a long time ago too. Again, thanks for your help. Recently, Roelof Otten opined : As you're using the same version as I do, you should get similar results. I manually typed in the first part before the @ then typed in a password with THAT email prefix, not what I use for inbound ... there is a reason for this actually, I am using two different domains, one for each, until the ISP switches over to fiber-optics Anyway, NOW it works OK, back to regular work. This works fine if you are on the Wanado network. To prevent spammers using email servers on other networks a lot of email servers only allow connection to the email server if you are actually on their network and do not allow you to use any other email address then the one of the network. When you switch networks. ea calling on line 2, you cannot use the wanada mailserver, but you have to use the Cegetel sever and apparently you also have to use the Cegetel email address. Also make sure that you change settings in both email accounts in TB! So, it's very likely that TB! sends your machine name and your ISP is having a problem with that. It should be interesting to see what OE sends. I don't have it installed though to check. I just sent a message with OE and the Helo is: Wed 2004-11-10 06:32:25: -- EHLO laptophome I have no idea why the Helo command is rejected. -- -= Allie =- . This allows your readers, when replying, to quote your text without the signature and list footers since everything below and including the sig delimiter is excluded when quoting. You can easily automate this process by including the sig delimiter in your templates. Even if you barely have a signature to speak of, that doesn't make any difference to whether or not you need a cut mark. Server reply - JCG localhost: Helo command rejected: Invalid name Your ISP is refusing the HELO argument you're using. I've been doing some testing just now and found that TB sends the machine name unless you're using an smtp proxy on your own machine. Apparently OE is using the machine name, it looks like your pc is called 'main', since that's what OE uses when communicating to the server. Could you give some more info on your setup? Are you on a LAN? Are you using a proxy-server to share your internet connection? Are scanning outgoing mail with your virus scanner? Have you got a fixed IP address from your ISP (or your LAN)? What firewall (if any) re you using? JCG Is this a bug in the current Bat version ? No, it's your ISP's mail server arbitrarily refusing your helo argument -- Groetjes, Roelof Postscript: The only thing of interest in some letters.
