Que Bueno. The Spring rains have really made the chigger population here in
Deer Corn active and there are monster ticks roaming the bushes once again.
Of course it hasn't rained very much like it has in the east. And my trips
to the west find that the Big Bend is still dry as a bone.

Only 85 days left until the 2015 Texas Cavers Reunion at Paradise Canyon below
Medina Lake!

The event begins when I open the park around noon on Thursday, October 15.
Currently there is good water flow at Paradise Canyon and Red has made many
improvements to it and it looks really nice. There should be more portapotties
and ice to sell. Along with the usual activities of swimming, relaxing and
socializing there will be vendors, CaveSim, rope climbing, mud wrestling,
surveying, Speleolympics, door prizes, live music, parading, clowns, flirting,
camping, wine tasting, giggling, slide shows, food, hot tubbing, hammocking,
tubing, fishing, costumes, late nights, early meetings, memberships,
fellowships, napping, cooking, smiling, beverages, clowns, books, stories,
nudity, lies, Aggies, sashaying, laughing, stumbling, beer, hugs, handshakes,
guffaws, breakfast tacos, kissing, well behaved dogs, stupid grins (ok, that's
just me), pointing, registering, planning, discussing, reminiscing, sauna-ing,
friends, photographing, Cavers, dishwashing and hopefully showering.

Like usual, well behaved pets & children are welcome, PLEASE be sure to pick up
after them. Fighting dogs or people and thieves will be dealt with harshly, for
our amusement, then banished.

Traditionally the south end of the campground is the quiet end and the dam nude
end is a tad louder. Sadly, the rule still stands about percussion musical
instruments at the hot tub end. The "Doo-Dah" parade has a Circus theme this
year, and naturally there will be prizes for the favorite costume!

Bring your favorite camp chairs, hammocks, inner tubes, kayaks, bicycles,
bedding, tents, refreshments, snacks, cold beverages, climbing gear and survey
instruments. Don't forget, bring a good attitude and a smile! See you there!

Don and others,
My home is five miles north of Dripping Springs or thirty miles from the
Capitol Building. I have several hundred dry oak and cedar elm logs which are
cut to fireplace size. They need only to be split to the desired thickness to
be the best firewood that money can't buy. I have a very good wheeled gasoline
log splitter. All that is needed are volunteers to come here during the week or
weekend to split all that is needed or wanted. Two or more work best on the
splitter. One or two full size pickup loads are available for those interested
in a get together to do the splitting and I will furnish the beer and soft
drinks. Call or text to schedule.

Here is the breakdown for registration. Adults $25, kids $15, and a cap of $80
for a family (adults and kids). I do what I can to keep TCR affordable. If
you have a financial hardship, feel free to contact me off-list and we can work
something out. Registration will accept cash and checks but not credit cards.
We encourage you to bring cash as it is easiest for us.

TCR has expenses and that is what the registration covers. Last year, after
TCR there was a long discussion on the list about registering. The bottom line
is, if you come to TCR, you are expected to register. An important part of
registration is the liability release to be on the property. TCR is not in the
police business and we will not be going around and checking for wristbands.
Part of the registration fee is cover those who don't register. The bottom line
is that if you don't register, you are there and everyone else paying for you.

I hope everyone can come on out and enjoy the fun, festivities, and
friendships. TCR has lots of great door prizes and contest prizes. We have
some great contests lined up. You can try your hand at the survey contest
where you can win survey instruments! Win at the rope climbing contest and you
can get rope! We'll have good prizes for the other contest too!

See y'all there!

Someone still had to get the porta johns so we did not have 300+ folks
defecating the land. Not entirely free.

Folks could have got in by just paying the parks per night camping fee of $15
per car.

Rather than assume nefarious cheapskate-ism, remember that when we held TCRs on
private land (no "use fee") the main/only thing the registration fee paid for
was the food. People who were not there for the Saturday dinner or did not want
to eat the dinner didn't need to pay. (If this was not the policy this
certainly
was the misperception).

Reminding folks that "That was then and this is now and things are different"
may very well take care of most of this issue. Jacqui

The sound for the Syphons was great. I could hear all the instruments,
lead singer, and backup singers. That's a lot to mix, and Rod had them
sounding great.

Re: [Texascavers] Texas Cavers Reunion "Dust Bowl" 2010

2010-10-20 Thread Jay Jorden
On the TCR: A memorable event, as always. Put it in a swamp (we've been
there) and cavers will still find creative ways to have fun. Stefan and a
cast of dozens put on an excellent culinary show. Speleolympics-style
competition, mud wrestling, hot tubbing, tale-swapping and more -- provided
something for everyone. Many wonderful friends showed up to share the
weekend. The vendors delivered quite a few keepers, and the Si(y)phons led
us on a musical march through the big-hair days gone by to rock the house.

On the venue: It was what it was -- a big ol' dry ranch with lots of
dirt/gravel roads. We've seen worse. Allan did what he could. The weather
cooperated. Trees were a plus, the waterless scenery a minus. Oh, I know --
didn't offer an alternative, did I? We have some fine ones to the north --
but too far from the Center of the Caving Universe and its satellites. ...
Wouldn't want to start any jokes about the provinces.

On the dust: a bit of nay-saying here ... My left lung finally started
clearing out last night -- but still coughing it up. I suspect some former
asthmatics out there may have also experienced those familiar,
short-of-breath gasps -- accompanied by what feels like a stabbing backache.
The problem: too much dust of talcum-powder consistency was hanging in the
still air most of the time -- much of it resulting from how we were
outnumbered by the larger offroad crowd driving their Toyota FJs, ATVs, and
other knobby-tired 4x4 vehicles way too fast down the middle of these
unmanaged dirtbike trails.

On the dough: I have mixed emotions. The bottom line is just that for TCR:
it's a make-or-break every year. We can't have folks sneaking onto a
pay-per-visit site. So to prevent that, the options of banquet and
no-banquet could be revived: one price for TCR admission, another for TCR
plus the feed. I recall we did this in the past, with those opting for the
latter choice receiving a food and drink coupon. That said, those who
protest about the Saturday feed during registration should be shamed into
buying it -- it's a great thing!

RE: [Texascavers] Texas Cavers Reunion "Dust Bowl" 2010

2010-10-20 Thread Fritz Holt
OK, charge each individual entering the event a fee based on the cost for
leasing the premises and the portapotties (even if they prefer to go in the
woods). Charge separately for food and drink. I'm sure this is
oversimplification as there are other costs involved that must be shared. Or,
charge a fee for all costs except food and pay for that when you eat. The
problem would be knowing how many would be partaking of the feast. I'm sure the
board or organizers can come up with a satisfactory solution.

Geezer, and fortunate to be.

others might think. In the long ago past, when TCR was still called Texas Old

At events like these, you will always have a few who do not register for some

Maybe a different "registration fee" for those who can't/don't want to eat the

Most people pay.

That is a good thing, since we pay for them whether they pay or not.

It would take a lot of volunteers to have people pay at every station and a
lot of money would have to be carried around all the time.

Nice to hear all the different ideas, but things work pretty well and most
people are pretty honest, or I like to believe that about cavers.

Things evolve as access to land and sites evolves.

And it is always such a treat to see so many people.

Rather than assume nefarious cheapskate-ism, remember that when we held TCRs
on private land (no "use fee") the main/only thing the registration fee paid
for was the food. People who were not there for the Saturday dinner or did
not want to eat the dinner didn't need to pay. (If this was not the policy
this certainly was the misperception).

Reminding folks that "That was then and this is now and things are

Re: [Texascavers] Texas Cavers Reunion "Dust Bowl" 2010

2010-10-19 Thread Ron Miller
I have heard some folks comment that they do not want to pay for food at the
event. Probably why they choose not to pay at all. I would say to let the park
office collect an entrance fee per family before you can enter. Then have TCR
collect an event fee in camp minus the facilities costs.

Maybe a different "registration fee" for those who can't/don't want to eat the
provided fare: charge a " camping only" fee (flat fee per family). I suspect
this would be a bookkeeping nightmare, but some logistics genius could figure
it
out, and TCR would reap a few more pennies to cover the costs. . just a
thought.

RE: [Texascavers] Texas Cavers Reunion "Dust Bowl" 2010

2010-10-19 Thread Stefan Creaser
An essential part of TCR is the "big feed" on Saturday night; it's an
opportunity for *everyone* to come together and meet their friends, or even new
people, without having to go search them out or attend the same activities they
are.

WRT " ...those who can't/don't want to eat... " then join up with the cooks and
cook what you can/want to eat that perhaps other people will too!

We, the cooks, *do* make an effort to provide healthy, allergy and lifestyle
aware foods. For instance, 2 of the 3 salad recipes required fish sauce which
is not (according to my veggie contacts) vegetarian, so we substituted. The
*normal* substitute for fish sauce contains wheat but that's not acceptable to
those who need gluten free, so we substituted that. Did you notice... don't
think so! Etc. etc.

The food is not the biggest part of the cost of a TCR but it's the only bit for
which a wristband is checked. It should not be what gates you buying a
wristband or not, that part is just your conscience.

Cheers,
Stefan

I would personally and publically like to thank my excellent team of cooks who
had to put up with me on the day and for a few weeks beforehand :-)

Your cooks were:
Thai Mains - Laura Coe, James Brown
Salads - Kristina Hager, Alia Stokic, Leslie Bell, Wes Schumacher
Veg - Aimee Beveridge
Starters - Don Cooper
BBQ - Vico Jones, Terry Holsinger and myself.
Dessert - Jocie Hooper, Grace Borengasser, Matt Zappitello

Please thank them next time you see them!

I would also like to thank the people who came by during the day and helped us
out by chopping up stuff, and as dinner time got closer and closer were
co-opted into doing some cooking! There were too many to name here, but they
were *all* appreciated

Thanks too to ASS who en-mass turned up to help serve (and chop stuff too!).

Yes, it was a little dusty. That happens when it doesn't rain for a while.

I did see lots and lots of people having fun and that is the whole point of
TCR.

I really want to thank the cooks for the great meal, the people who manned
registration, Pete for the hot tub and sauna, the Terminal Syphons for a
rockin' show, the vendors and organizations, and all the people who worked
behind the scenes doing all the things that make TCR happen. Thank you to

This year we tried to find the dustiest spot we could, you'll have to come

See y'all next year,

Well said Fritz, we have the same problem at the Kentucky Speleofest.
There are two caving preserves in Kentucky that are supported by caving
events.
For every person who goes out of their way not to pay takes away money
that could be used the up keep, maintenance, improvements of the preserves.
Campgrounds are getting harder to find, much less rent for groups like us.
And there is also the cost of event insurance that cuts into the profits. The
bottom line is those people are enjoying the benefits and have no idea or
care about what it takes to host an event and what the net profits are used
for. I've been following the Texas cave scene for several years now. The
TSA and TCMA are both great organizations that work to protect the caves of
Texas. I know a few of you personally and are friends with some of you on
Facebook and only know rest of you from the here. My hats off to all the
great work being done in Texas.

If one had walked around the campground as supper was being served
probably another 50 or 60 or so without wrist bands would have been
found eating supper at their own camp. They hadn't registered. TCR had
to pay their use fee but didn't collect any registration fee to cover
it. Try to discourage anyone scamming TCR in the future if you know
about um.

As has already been mentioned, there is bad news from TCR.

Early on Saturday morning, Ed Alexander was found unconscious in the water near
the hot tub. He was pulled from the water and cavers started CPR. 911 was
called. Approximately 30 minutes later, Ed was transported by ambulance to a

I wish to express my deepest condolances to the family. Please remember Ed and

Howdy Y'all,

This time next week I hope all of you are at Paradise Canyon
(http://paradisecanyon.com/) for the 31st Texas Cavers Reunion. If you been

before, you know you will have a great time. If you haven't been before,
you really need to come and have fun with all of us. The site is the same
as last year. The water is a little lower than last year but it is still
flowing well. The long range weather forecast looks like sunny and warm
days with cool nights. For more information and direction, visit the
Paradise Canyon website, the TSA website
(http://www.cavetexas.org/maps/tcr2007.html), or the TCR website
(http://www.oztotl.com/tcr).

The cost for TCR is the same as last year, $25 for adults, $15 for children,

and $15 if you are an old time Texas caver! We will have the hot tub and
sauna as usual. We are planning a great feed on Saturday night followed by
various awards and wonderful door prizes (thanks Whole Earth Provision
Company! and others). The Bexar Grotto will have a spaghetti dinner on
Friday night for a small donation and TCMA will have a breakfast on Saturday

morning for a small donation. There will be a TSS meeting on Saturday
morning. On Sunday, there will be a general members meeting of the Texas
Cave Management Association followed by a general members meeting of the
TSA.

We have the park until 4 PM on Sunday so please help us out by picking up
any trash when you leave.

See ya'll there...

help plan your route. It’s at: http://cavetexas.org/maps/tcr2008.htm
l. Being a Google Map, you can zoom in and out, as well as drag the
map view around. There’s also a TCR page at: http://cavetexas.org/events/TCR/index.htm
l though the one Allan maintains below is probably more up to date.

Just a comment concerning getting to TCR. You might want to map out a
route that avoids Loop 1604 from Bandera Rd (SH 16) to Culebra (471) if
you'll be in that area between 4-6pm on Friday.

There are several alternate routes that work much better than the 1604
rolling parking lot at that time of day.

I'm not sure what the RV situation will be as they have made some changes in
the park. I am meeting with the owner of the park and will see what I can find
out. We still have several details to work out. I will post more information
as it becomes available.

I was informed by someone who called the campground that there would be a
$50/night fee for those with RV's. There is no designated RV spaces from what I
can remember and there is no electrical hookups. Can someone verify what the RV
accommodation's is going to be? Inquiring minds want to know.

Greetings y'all,

Summer is coming to a close and everyone is looking at what to do over Labor
Day Weekend. As you starting thinking about your fall plans, make sure you
write down the date for the Texas Cavers Reunion. TCR will take place on
the weekend of October 10-12 and will once again be at Paradise Canyon
(http://paradisecanyon.com/). This is the second weekend of October rather
than the traditional third weekend of October. We had a scheduling conflict
with the site and the date change was the best move. Being a little earlier
in October should give us slightly warming weather so we can all enjoy the
Blanco River. For directions, see either the Paradise Canyon website or
visit www.oztotl.com/tcr.

This year we are bringing back an old tradition that is being set up by Don
Broussard.

Tarp Sale! Caving gear you no longer use. Camping gear anyone could use.
Bring that wet suit which shrank too much to wear anymore. That head lamp
you do not like. Slide projectors, flash bulbs, someone must want it!
A big blue tarp will lay on the ground. Put a price tag including your name
on your item.If you see something you like, put your money and its price
tag in the box on the corner of the tarp. Saturday before supper come by
the box and extract your tag and money. This is not a supervised tarp; we
trust one another to be honest.

Money not collected Saturday will be saved until you arrise Sunday. Find
Don Broussard for any questions.

Make your plans to be at TCR for all the fun!

See y'all there...

Allan

Yes, they are on the same weekend. When it came down to making a decision,
I did actually think about this as a conflict. I hate making people choose.
But sometimes, what can you do? I guess the choice is, you can come to TCR
for best, or console yourself with the rest! ;-)

Que lastima!

While it's true that Austin and Atlanta are about 1,000 miles apart, there is
clearly some cross-pollination between the two events. I see Sherry and
Emily Graham were at TCR last year, and though I missed the 2007 TAG,
there are always a few Tejanos there.

The conflict means I'll have to make a choice, and the energy crisis being as
it is, I'll have to pragmatically choose the closer event. The same will be
true
for Becky Jones, a damn shame!

Do I correctly assume that Liebman is still showing up? If he is, it's the
only
place. He didn't even show at OTR last year, which he can spit at from his
back porch.

Hopefully, Ediger can hop a ride down on a freight train.

Y'all have fun now, y''hear?

Alex
